Festival prepares for summer! The Party for Patrick - P4P summer festival, now in its fifth year, takes place at Littleton Manor Farm in Reigate on Sunday, 25th August. Patrick’s family celebrate his birthday every year since a tragic skiing accident took his life. Now the celebration is used to raise funds for all the causes Patrick felt passionate about. This year funds raised will help cycling and other sporting projects in the area and beyond. Whether you’re a keen gardener or just want to choose the greenest, most natural way to deal with your food and garden waste, composting is the perfect solution. Grass cuttings, dried leaves, twigs and vegetable peelings are just some of the ingredients that can go into a compost bin or heap to make compost at home – ideal to use in potting or planting in your garden or allotment. Getting started is easy. All you need is a compost bin or a small space in the garden to create a heap. Then just follow this easy guide to creating your own supply of natural food for your garden and watch your garden bloom.
Compost is a nutrient-rich food product for your garden. It will help improve soil structure and maintain moisture levels, while helping to suppress plant disease. Home-made compost is natural and peat-free, which means it is good for the environment outside your garden too. It reduces the need to buy peat products, which have been extracted from peat bogs, resulting in the release of the carbon stored in them and the loss of a rare habitat.

1. Find the right site. Ideally site your bin or heap on bare soil. If space is limited, put your bin on concrete, tarmac or patio slabs, but make sure there’s a layer of soil or existing compost on the bottom so garden creatures can colonise. 2. Add the right ingredients. Keep a kitchen container for items you can compost at home (separate to your kerbside collection). Fill this with the right ingredients such as vegetable peelings, taking care not to compost cooked food, meat or fish. 3. Fill it up. Regularly empty your kitchen container and your garden waste into your bin or heap. Getting a 50/50 mix of greens and browns as you fill your bin is the perfect recipe for good compost. 4. Wait a while. Check its progress; if your compost is too wet and gives off an odour, add more browns. If it’s too dry and is not rotting, add some greens. After 9-12 months, the ingredients you have put in should have turned into a crumbly dark brown, earthy smelling material inside the bottom part of the bin or heap. 5. Collect the compost. Simply lift the bin off the compost or open the hatch at the bottom and scoop out the fresh compost with a garden fork or spade. If you have built your own, simply rake out the ready compost. Don’t worry if it looks a little lumpy with twigs and bits of eggshell – this is perfectly normal. 6. Use it and watch your garden bloom. Your compost can be used for all types of gardening needs – for potting (if mixed with ordinary soil) or to enrich flowerbeds and vegetable patches.

Your Baby’s Teeth A recent dental survey has revealed that across the UK, a huge 79% of parents are waiting until their children are over a year old before taking them to the dentist - and 5% wait until their children turn five. What’s more, less than half the 18-34 year olds with children under 16 (47%) take their children to the dentist every six months, compared with 75% of the over 45 age group. Deputy Chief Dental Officer, Dr Henry Clover, comments: “The average age a child gains their first tooth is around 6 months. It is recommended that you take your child to the dentist as soon as they develop their first baby tooth, with regular check-ups recommended by your dental team thereafter.” Denplan has released guidelines on how to look after your baby’s and children’s teeth and when you should start taking your children to the dentist. Savings accounts for children By MoneyVista Most banks and building societies offer children’s savings accounts, often paying better rates of interest than standard savings accounts and with free gifts, magazines and birthday cards. Regular savings often produce the best rates of interest. But check the small print - some accounts are only available if a parent also has an account there. Also, watch out for high minimum investment levels, limits on the number of annual withdrawals and notice periods for withdrawing cash. Tax and savings
Interest on savings is taxable. But as you need to earn more than the personal tax allowance (£9,205 2013/14) to be a taxpayer, few children pay tax. To get interest tax-free fill in form R85. If they’ve already paid tax you can reclaim this by completing form R40. There are special rules if parents give savings to their child. If these savings earn annual gross interest of £100 or more (£200 if both
parents contribute), the interest is taxed as if it belongs to the parent. Junior ISAs If you opt for a Junior ISA (JISA) you don’t have to worry about tax. There are two types of JISAs - cash and stocks & shares. Cash JISAs are just like savings accounts except all interest is tax-free. There are limits on how much you can save (£3,720 for 2013/14). The advantage of a JISA is that once your child reaches 18 this money is automatically tipped into an adult ISA so the cash remains in a tax-free savings account. The potential disadvantages are that you cannot get at the money before your child is 18. Also, when the account matures, it’s your child and not you who has access to the cash. Any child under 18 is eligible for a JISA provided they don't have a Child Trust Fund. Fun, family-friendly classes teaching BSLbased baby signing are now available in relaxed, 1-hour weekly sessions in Dorking (Mondays, 10.30am) and Bookham (Thursdays, 9.45am). As well as familiar songs and nursery rhymes there are opportunities for tickles, bouncing and toddling too. In the twelveweek term Tiny Talk aims to teach 50 core signs with new signs every week. Children need to dress safely and comfortably for riding lessons. It’s often possible to borrow suitable boots, riding hats and body protectors initially but jodhpurs can be a good investment as they stop legs from being rubbed by the saddle. Trainers are not advisable as they can slide through the stirrups. During early lessons, children will begin to master basic riding skills, developing these further as they progress. Many stables also offer Pony Days or courses during school holidays. As well as riding, children will then take part in other pony-related activities such as grooming, mucking out, learning about the different parts of the horse, what to feed and much more. This is a great way of increasing their knowledge and having fun at the same time. “Learning to communicate with animals and enjoy their companionship are experiences that change your life,” says Claire. “Riding is a truly wonderful pastime for all ages.”

Family holidays - breaking the mould At Families Surrey East we compile a great list of holiday camps for your kids to enjoy. But what if you’d like to take part in those activities yourself, or learn new skills as a family? We’ve got some great suggestions for you here.
The Field Studies Council (FSC) is an environmental education charity that offers short breaks for families to enjoy together – to discover, explore and be inspired by the natural world. 2013 is their 70th anniversary. The Field Studies Council’s early work was in field courses for school children. Since the late 1980s however they have offered a wide range of reasonably priced holidays where families can reconnect with nature, stay active and learn something along the way! Here are some of the top reasons why people choose family holidays with the FSC:

4 Low carbon footprint FSC centres are run in an
environmentally sensitive manner with challenging targets on energy and waste. Food is sourced locally where possible and the fact that you are in the UK means the family is reducing its carbon footprint without losing out on having a great holiday. You don’t even have to travel far to reach your nearest Centre – there is one at Juniper Hall in Mickleham, near Dorking. Juniper Hall

Country house activity holidays for families Another company that offers organised family holidays is HF. Party venues – home or away?
An at-home party can be just the thing for nursery and reception age children, with traditional games. Older girls, around 8-9 yrs, might also just love to invite their friends home and have a girly time. A party at home can be cheap and other parents are sometimes happy to muck in – especially with a glass of prosecco on hand. BUT – there will be a major clear up afterwards and other siblings might be around who are not welcome. For large parties for 5+yrs – or joint birthday parties, (which halve the responsibility!) it’s fun to hire a hall, which could be in a sports centre, ideally with outside space. Some venues can provide cake, food, party bags and invitations, others don’t. An activity plus a picnic space may be all you need, or you might prefer to have everything provided at the venue. Have your checklist ready to make sure you know what’s covered and what’s not! Many venues will have their own activities, from soft play to makeovers, pottery making, rollerskating and laser parties. Or go for an outdoor party with animals, tractors or forest adventures; you’ll also find archery and skiing venues in our Directory.
