TAKE THE STRESS OUT OF LABELLING CLOTHES You know how it is – a long summer holiday lazes by… days out with the children, afternoons in the garden with friends’ children splashing in the paddling pool and before you know it it’s a week before the beginning of term and a mad dash ensures to the shoe shop, school uniform shop and of course the newsagent to get essentials such as breakable rubbers and gel pens!!! Finally on the last day of the holidays, instead of a last minute treat, the day is spent labelling clothes. Not anymore. With Snappy Tags, a half day job becomes a 20 minute flash. Order tags with your child’s name etched in and when you receive your Snappy Tag Kit all you have to do is attach the tag to the care label inside the uniform and you’re ready. How to cope with first day nerves (yours and theirs) The big first day is almost here - reduce the chances of wobbles at the classroom door with our starting school tips. By Liat Hughes-Joshi
1
Ease them into a ‘school compatible’ routine If you’ve been enjoying lazy summer holiday mornings and later nights, head towards more of a routine a few days in advance to lessen the shock.
2
Highlight the positives Read stories about school or recount tales of your own positive experiences. Remind them of the toys/ activities they enjoyed at any settling-in visits.
3
Pre-empt worries Your child could be feeling anxious but unable to articulate their concerns. Ask them questions, provide reassurance and tell them it’s absolutely fine to talk to the teacher if they’re scared or sad.
4
Swot up on the school run Make sure you know how long it might take to get there, where to park if you’ll drive and which door to pick up from, as well as drop off, if there are several.
6
5
Keep farewells short but sweet A quick hug will be more reassuring than a ten minute goodbye – this makes it seem a bigger deal than just a few hours apart. For especially nervous little ones, it works well to provide a kiss on their hand to ‘keep’ in their pocket during the day.
6
Skip the mascara but remember a tissue It’s normal for parents, not just kids, to feel emotional on day one. Try and hold back tears until you’re out of sight if possible so as not to worry your child. But rest assured, if they do roll, you won’t be the only ones and we promise no-one will remember in years to come. Liat Hughes Joshi is a parenting journalist and the author of four books including ‘New Oldfashioned Parenting’ and ‘How to Unplug Your Child’ (both published by Summersdale) and Raising Children: The Primary Years (Pearson).

Creating outstanding scientific learners Opened in September 2011, Harris Academy Beckenham has already made a significant impact on the secondary school landscape in Bromley. In our opening two years we raised the GCSE 5A*-C including English and Maths by a tremendous 26% and rapidly improved results at Post 16 as well. They are delighted to announce that they were awarded a judgement of ‘Good’ by OFSTED in July 2013, an excellent result given the very challenging inspection framework! The team remarked that ‘Achievement is improving rapidly. Students make good, and sometimes outstanding progress because they are taught
well…’ and that ‘students report how proud they are to be at the academy and how much they enjoy taking part in the wide range of activities that are on offer outside lessons.’ Their ethos at Harris Academy Beckenham aims to create outstanding scientific learners, as we train our students in resilience, reflectiveness, resourcefulness and reciprocity. These crucial skills underpin an enterprising attitude to learning and have already had significant impact on our students’ progress. In order to equip our students with the skills required to be confident and eloquent writers, readers and speakers, our innovative WORD programme is placed at the heart of our curriculum. Our focus on raising aspirations at every level has contributed to this excellent performance, and we intend to sustain and improve these results further year on year. They look forward to welcoming you to our open evening on Thursday 1st October. www.harrisbeckenham.org.uk

Clubs & Classes
Too Much, Too Soon? Are we pushing our kids too far by signing them up to lots of clubs and classes - or offering valuable advantages? By Sally J. Hall Kids need to have plenty going on to stop getting bored and parents are aware of the value of after-school clubs to ensure their children are stimulated. But with a vast range on offer, it can be tempting to sign them up for a different activity every evening. We might not all be able to afford much but there’s no doubt a couple of well-chosen activities can be great for areas that the school can’t cover. What age is best to start classes? Early years: They get very tired so keep outside activities to a minimum. A good run in the park lets off steam. An art, singing or baby ballet-type class with the emphasis on play is great. Infant school: Add a low-key activity;
singing, music, dancing, sports and swimming are great. Junior school: As tests loom, add an educational class if your child is struggling with one subject. Senior school: It’s easier to add activities as energy and independence increases. What’s on the menu? Mini Mozart? Even for musical geniuses, from seven years, a 30 minute class is plenty, with ten minutes of daily practice. Fitness Fanatic Sports and dance are great for fitness and flexibility though for younger kids, avoid classes that are too aggressive or pressurised. Mastermind If one subject is a struggle, one-to-one tuition can pay dividends.
Be yourself! Be amazing!
At PQA, students get the chance to express themselves through learning acting, singing, dancing, scriptwriting, directing, editing whether it be infront or behind the scenes, these are all creative, productive roles and invaluable life skills. To have the confidence to stand up infront of other’s performing, public speaking, proposing idea’s, is a major part in becoming a success in life. PQA Chislehurst and Sidcup offer classes in Comedy and Drama, Film and TV and Musical Theatre for 3-18 year olds on Saturday’s at The Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar School in the mornings and afternoons, to book a FREE taster email heather@pqacademy.com Heather Smith Principal of The Pauline Quirke Academy Chislehurst and Sidcup

Mini Thespian Kids thrive in acting and singing classes and may go on to theatre school. It builds confidence. Alternatives Check the clubs and classes section of the Families website to see what’s near you. From archery to zoology, you’ll find something for every child. What do clubs and classes offer your child? • Mixing with children from other areas will widen their social circle • A chance to take part in activities not offered at school • A potential career • Teamwork skills • Increases confidence • Persistence and patience. But – play is important too Educational Psychologist Peter Gray wrote that we should allow children more time playing and that more time in the classroom can be detrimental, because kids “Judgement, wisdom and creative ability …come from life experiences,” he says. “For children, those experiences are embedded in play.” Sally J. Hall is a writer and editor who has written for all the main parenting titles as well as The Independent and The Mail. Swimming made fun for kids 3+
Swimming is an essential lifestyle which can also enhance other skills such as cognitive. social as well as physical development; ‘More than just swimming’ So whilst not wanting to overload children with too many extra curricular classes swimming is one of the ‘must do’ activities. Aquakids Swim School has been running for over 20 years and operates from Bromley High School Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday during term time with Intensive Courses during the October, Easter and Summer holidays. THE ART OF PLAYING AN INSTRUMENT Funky Monkey Keyboard Classes are designed to bridge the gap between shake, rattle and singing style classes and formal instrumental tuition. Some parents feel a one to one piano lesson can be too formal (and pricey!), so our classes provide the perfect middle ground to introducing them to the art of playing an instrument. As our classes teach 4-11 year olds to read and write music in small groups, we perfectly balance all aspects of practical and theoretical music. As a result, children find learning with like minded peers very rewarding and inspiring and are able to grasp the tricky concept of note reading through different mediums, rather than staring at a piece of music on the piano! 01732 457100 www.funkymonkey.info
