Canal charity seeks community groups
Eureka! turns 25!
The Canal & River Trust is urging local communities to play a bigger part in looking after the waterways on their doorstep, by urging them to ‘adopt’ up to a one mile stretch of local canal.
Popular children's museum, Eureka! in Halifax is celebrating its 25th anniversary this month. We caught up with Eureka!'s Chief Executive Leigh-Anne Stradeski to find out what makes it one of the region's most visited family attractions and its plans for the next 25 years.
When it first opened, Eureka!’s interactive experience was unique in the museum world. What was the thinking behind the concept? Children’s museums are places designed especially for children for them to learn through play, exploration and discovery. Our life president Dame Vivien Duffield experienced children’s museums in the USA and believed passionately that the UK needed our own. More than 7 million children and parents have passed through our doors since we opened (that’s about the population of Hong Kong), so she was definitely onto something. Museums are now using interactive aspects to improve their user experience, however, Eureka! is still as popular as ever with families, why do you think this is? Families love a great day out together. Factor in the learning that underlies all of our activities and exhibits and you’ve got a fun, family experience that parents also know will aid their children’s development, so it’s a win-win! I have fond memories of the museum as a child (my own kids love it too!) – what seem to be the most popular areas of the museum? It’s difficult to pin down the most popular areas as each child tends to have different favourites and highlights, though I’d say that my personal favourite right now is our All About Me gallery, exploring the human body and how amazing we all are.
Adoption groups will work in partnership with the Trust to make their local waterway shine; from improving wildlife habitats and access for local people, to creating a linear veg-patch for the community. Each group works at least one day a month for 12 months and agrees the projects they want to prioritise to make their mile matter. There are already over 160 adoption groups working across the country, including scouts, neighbourhood societies, running groups and schools. The Piece Hall to re-open on Yorkshire Day The Piece Hall in Halifax will re-open its gates to the public on 1 August 2017 following Calderdale Council’s multi-million-pound transformation programme, with support of £7million from The National Lottery. The opening will be a celebration of the restoration and transformation of the Grade I listed building. Leader of Calderdale Council, Cllr Tim Swift said: “The transformation programme was about restoring and preserving The Piece Hall for future generations, but also about adapting an 18th Century trading hall into a world class venue for the 21st Century, which will attract visitors from the UK and beyond.”
What has been the museum's biggest achievement over the last 25 years? I think the fact that we’ve been able to remain relevant and “on-trend” as children’s interests change is a major achievement. It’s not an easy thing to do in the fast-paced world we live in! What’s next for Eureka!? As part of our birthday celebrations we’ll open Spark Gallery on July 8th/9th, our first ever flexible exhibition space. Spark’s first exhibition will be digiPlaySpace – an unmissable touring collection bringing together 14 unique, interactive digital art works created by artists from around the globe. It’s an award-winning experience created by Toronto International Film Festival, and we couldn’t be more proud and excited to be bringing it to Europe for the first time. Don’t miss it!

NEWS The annual Summer Reading Challenge encourages children to read six or more books of their choice – fact books, joke books, picture books or audio books – just as long as they are borrowed from the library. There are collectable incentives and rewards, plus a certificate for every child who completes the Challenge, which is run by independent charity The Reading Agency. This year's theme is Animal Agents, illustrated by Tony Ross, illustrator of the hugely popular Horrid Henry series. The Challenge is open to all primary school children and is designed for all reading abilities. Most libraries will also run early years activities for pre-schoolers. FAMILY LIFE Your school shoe fitting guide Poorly fitting shoes can cause painful problems, in fact, your child’s feet will continue to grow and develop until they reach their teens, so getting it right now is vital. Measuring your child’s feet_

It’s important to have their feet measured by a trained, professional shoe fitter every eight weeks or so. The fitter will measure your child’s feet from the tip of their longest toe to the back of their heel and across the widest part of the foot. You can do it yourself in between professional fittings. There should be roughly a thumbnail’s length between the end of the shoe and your child’s toes, to allow for movement and growth. Warning signs to look out for_ Children are not always good at telling their parents when they have problems with ill-fitting shoes. The following signs are usually indicative of poorly-fitting shoes: • Blisters and rubbing • Poor posture or a rolling gait when your child walks • Reluctance to wear shoes at all • Refusing to wear socks (usually if the shoes are too small and tight) If they do complain get their feet measured professionally again, just in case they’ve outgrown them. What to look for when choosing school shoes_ A firm heel cup is very important. The heel supports the foot and needs to be held in a straight position. If the heel leans to one side or the other, pain and postural problems could arise. Try pressing gently on the sides of the heel – if it sinks in easily, the shoe is not providing sufficient support. The shoe should have a strap, Velcro or laces to prevent the shoe from slipping forward and scrunching your child’s toes. Ill-fitting shoes that crush the toes can lead to permanent problems like clawed or hammer toes. The shoe sole should be flexible at the ball of the foot only and it should have sufficient cushioning so that the foot is supported comfortably when your little one runs or skips.

Shoe material should be breathable and water resistant. If your child’s feet sweat and can’t breathe, smelly feet and fungal infections can result. It is a good idea to encourage your child to wear socks with their school shoes. Socks help to absorb sweat and can prevent damage to the feet caused by friction as your child runs and plays. Once the primary school offers go out, you find lots of panicking parents worried that their little one will be left behind if they aren’t properly prepared. All children learn and develop at different rates and in different ways, however, there are a few basics that can be helpful. Holding a pencil
Reading
No one expects a child who is four or who has just turned five to be able to write their name, but being able to hold a pencil confidently is quite useful. But don’t panic if they can’t. Some children are simply late at developing gross motor skills, and some may face other barriers. Playing with Lego or Duplo, or making models from modelling clay can help.
There is no expectation that any child will be able to read at such a young age. Don’t spend the summer trying to get them to learn the alphabet. Enjoy your time together instead. There are lots of studies out there that show reading to your child every day has a far better impact on their educational outcomes.
Mastering cutlery If your child can use a knife and fork, and cut their own food, it will make lunchtimes a lot easier for them. But don’t worry if not as there will be dinner supervisors there to help them. They will also be expected to carry their food tray and take plates up to be washed. This is something you can prepare them for at home by getting them to carry their plates out to the kitchen after meals.
Independent dressing is something children should be able to do. Staff will be there to help them with dressing, particularly when they start changing for PE lessons, but avoid laces and get Velcro fastenings instead, which gives them a bit of independence.
Using the toilet on their own If your child has been in private day-care, they may be used to having staff around that help them with toileting. Unless a child has special needs, they will need to wipe themselves and be able to flush the toilet.

Send a postcard Let your friends and family know what you’ve been up to with a postcard. They’re only short so are a wonderful way to get a bit of writing going during the holidays. If your child is reluctant to write,

The Fun Club at Portland Nurseries is Out of School & Holiday Care for children aged 4-11 years. It has specially resourced rooms with plenty of space for playing and learning with regular outdoor play and Forest School sessions, as well as outings to local attractions. Other activities range from sport, drama and puppet making to painting, printing and costume design, as well as storytelling and writing plays. Eorl Crabtree
After representing the Huddersfield Giants on the pitch for 17 years, legend Eorl Crabtree has hung up his boots and taken on an off-field role as Club Ambassador. At 6 foot 6 inches tall, everything about the iconic Crabtree says GIANT and he is on a mission to get more people enjoying Rugby League and in particular what the Huddersfield Giants have to offer. Having retired from playing professional rugby league at the end of the 2016 season, Crabtree is enjoying his new role at the club, getting out into the community and helping to build the club and sport off the field: "After 17 years of playing professional rugby league, the transition from being a rugby player and training day in and day out has been quite tough but has been enjoyable at the same time. I miss training with the lads every single day, playing and winning rugby league games, but now I get to represent the club off the field. The important thing for me now is to get more people experiencing what the Huddersfield Giants have to offer. "It’s really important that we keep trying to get people to games, trying to raise the profile, and this is why we’re trying to do more with schools and local clubs. We want to get as many families to come as possible, especially young kids to come through and watch the beautiful game that we love. The more people that we can bring down and the more that we can get through the gates, the more special the atmosphere will be and the bigger the crowds will be. Our ethos at the Giants is to create an experience for the whole family to enjoy." This year the Giants are putting further emphasis on getting into more schools through the SkyTry initiative and making sure that they get more children into rugby league. But trying to keep them busy, and trying to not spend a lot of money doing it, is another matter.

Museums and art galleries There are countless free museums to be explored on a whole range of different subjects. The beauty of them is that your children will be learning, having fun and being inspired at the same time, meaning they can be a wonderful recipe for knowledge. Gardening Help them plant some flowers or seeds and not only do you have entertainment for one day, but it’s something you can go back to and chart how they grow. It's a wonderful biology lesson for children, and they won’t even realise it!
Bike ride Bikes are a great, free and fun way to spend a few hours. It’s a great way to travel long distances in a short space of time, and they’ll feel like they’ve really achieved something. Trip to the pond A local pond is a great way to find wildlife that may be missing from your back garden. From frogs and tadpoles to fish swimming below, it gives little ones a taste of the outdoors in a safe environment. Make something All you need is some simple arts and crafts to let their imagination go wild. Make a paper boat or a plane. Or perhaps it’s someone’s birthday coming up and you want to make them a custom card. It’s a great way to get their creative side working. Sports at the park Grab a bat, ball or whatever they love and head to the nearest park. Get your friends and their families involved and make a day of it. Head to the beach Children love beaches, it’s almost universal. Running away from the waves, skimming stones, building sandcastles, making pictures in the wet sand...
Home cinema Watch out for the latest premiere on your home TV, darken the room and make your own popcorn. The kids will love it, and you’ll love not having to travel and pay a small fortune for snacks.
Paint Children love painting and it shows them the beauty of creating something. Just make sure you're all wearing aprons and have a lot of newspapers down!
Volunteer Volunteering can be done on a huge range of tasks, be it simply providing company for a neighbour, walking a dog, helping out in a charity shop, helping plant trees or anything else that benefits another fellow human or cause.
Puzzles Sitting down as a family and completing a jigsaw, a puzzle or a board game is a wonderful way to spend a few hours.
Baking The kids will love getting involved in baking, especially with all the messy parts. Getting them to clean up after themselves, however, may be a bit more difficult!
