News and Views Bambi on ice? Calverley Grounds in Tunbridge Wells will be transformed with the help of a new ice rink. The real ice rink, supplied & managed by Cousins Entertainment Ltd, promises to be an essential winter experience and great fun for all ages and abilities, with parent and toddler sessions, themed nights and spot prizes for the best skater and the best ‘Bambi’ on the ice. Robin Cousins, former Olympic skating champion and head judge on Dancing on Ice, said ‘I’m sure it will be very popular.’ The ice rink will be open from 26 November until 2 January (9.30am–9.30pm), with a special launch event on 25 November. The cost for one hour’s skating, including hire of skating boots, will be from £7 for children and £9 for adults. Family tickets are available and there is a loyalty card scheme. New owner at Microsport Bromley
Local mum Angela Kempton has taken over from founder Jane Waters at Microsport in the Bromley area.The classes which are held in Bromley, Beckenham and Tatsfield, teach ball sports (including soccer, tennis, hockey and cricket) to children aged between 2 and 4. Angela will introduce more holiday classes and is planning to run a Christmas course. Jane who set up Microsport 20 years ago will continue to run the company. Family portrait photography that’s a break from the norm Located in Longfield (near Dartford) in a fabulous air-conditioned barn, Form Studios (www.form-studios.co.uk) is a new contemporary photographic studio. What sets Form Studios apart from other photographic companies is their relaxed approach and bespoke sets. A new cleaning service is now available in the Bromley and Croydon areas. Local mum, Emma Swan has set up a business called Homeclean, which is a domestic cleaning agency providing cleaning and ironing services for £7 per hour, with an office dedicated to serving the Croydon CR and Bromley BR postcodes. ‘Our cleaners are locally based and are happy to travel to our clients’ homes at times/dates to suit the client,’ she told Families, adding ‘We can provide high quality cleaners at very short notice. We have a team of thoroughly professional cleaners available who can offer an ironing and laundry service too. Tell us a bit about yourself I am a Costume Maker for theatre, television, film and commercials. I also teach pattern cutting and sewing to adults and children. I set up Sew Fun, sewing classes for children two years ago; we are based at Ripley Arts Centre in Bromley. The classes have been a real success, mixed with a regular group of children who have been with me since the launch of Sew Fun, and some recent members. What is a Sew Fun class like? Sew Fun is aimed at children from the age of 8 years and upwards. We learn to sew in a fun way with some exciting projects such as exquisite aprons, pretty tops to wear and little lavender bags which the children love making. We use a range of hand sewing techniques and machine skills. I also offer Sew Fun parties where I can tailor the project to your child’s needs and age group and I provide all the materials. Tell us a little about your business. Before setting up my business I was and still am a costumier. My experience ranges across most genres from period costume at The Shakespeare Globe to modern dress for Opera, to costumes for Grease The Musical. I feel it is important to continue as a professional costume maker while teaching as I share my experience and knowledge with the students, as well as having a passion for both areas of my career. How does Sew Fun fit in with family life? As I work for myself I can fit in my business around school hours. I am quite an early bird, so it’s not unusual for me to have achieved a few hours work before the school run. I have two boys aged 7 and 8 and they have grown up with a mum who is continually sewing, so are very familiar with the sound of a sewing machine and threads trailing around the house!
What are the best bits about working for yourself? The best part about working for myself is the flexibility and the diversity of the work. I love being able to create new projects for the children, sourcing lovely fabrics and seeing the children improve and achieve some wonderful work. And the worse? Getting up really early when I am approaching a deadline, it’s the only way I can feel organised! I love what I do but it’s important to have time away from work as well, especially when your work is based at home. What are your plans for the future and do you intend to introduce any more classes? I plan to set up more short courses for adults, such as cutting a personal pattern for a skirt, making a bag and making a shirt pattern.
