Welcome This year I'm trying to be more realistic about my resolutions - perhaps it's unfair of us to expect a complete overhaul of a lifetime of bad habits just because it’s the 1st of Jan? Surely we’re setting ourselves up for disappointment there a little. Still, it doesn’t stop me enjoying these first few weeks, where I can cling on to the hope that my new 'healthy living' regime will last past January. But even if I don’t quite manage it (and I’m already wondering if all this chocolate will keep until February, and wouldn’t it be a terrible waste to let it go off?!) surely at least I can still feel proud of doing something? After all, being exceptionally good for 8% of the year is better than nothing!

James Bond Exhibition at The National Motor Museum The National Motor Museum, Beaulieu have announced that Bond in Motion, the exciting new exhibition of 50 James Bond vehicles, will be unveiled to the public on 17th January 2012. The exhibition, the largest of its kind staged anywhere in the world, will showcase 50 of the best loved and most iconic James Bond vehicles in celebration of the 50th year of James Bond. Bond in Motion will run throughout 2012 and will feature a range of vehicles which appeared in Bond films including cars, boats, motorbikes, sleds, jets and many more. This collection of vehicles will include the 1964 Aston Martin DB5 and the 1937 Phantom lll Rolls-Royce both from Goldfinger, the Lotus Esprit S1 affectionately nicknamed ‘Wet Nellie’ from The Spy Who Loved Me, the Bede Acrostar jet famously flown in Octopussy, the BMW 750iL from Tomorrow Never Dies, the original villain Parahawk featured in The World is Not Enough and the original SFX Cello Case Ski famously navigated by Timothy Dalton in The Living Daylights.

Dickens was born in Portsmouth on the 7 February 1812. To mark this occasion, Charles Dickens’ Birthplace Museum will be open from 28 Jan this year. There will be a special exhibition at the City Museum called ‘A Tale of One City’ which will show what life was like in Portsmouth during 1812 – 1870. The exhibition will run until November. On Sunday 5th and Tuesday 7th February there will be free admission to the museum. Both days will have a range of activities plus celebrations in the street including performers, musicians, food, craft activities & readings.

Pilates

Pilates is based upon an understanding of the body's muscular and skeletal systems. It is an exercise method designed to elongate, strengthen and restore the body to balance. Jane Laithwaite is a qualified Pilates teacher in Southsea with a background in dancing – when she first found out about Pilates she realised she had already been practicing the fundamentals of it through dance for years. She has now been teaching Pilates for the last 5 years, and has recently re-launched her Matwork classes as Southsea Pilates (previously invigor8fitness). Jane has also begun to incorporate ChiBall into her Pilates lessons, as well as teaching it in its own right. ‘‘Pilates helps you gain a greater understanding of your body and its connection with the mind,’’ says Jane. ‘‘In Pilates, especially as a teacher we look at the whole body and try to address imbalances; we make lots of adaptations. What’s in a nursery?

Day nurseries

Open usually 8am-6pm, day nurseries are a good option for working parents as many will take babies from 3 months. The day follows structured activities interspersed with naps, meals and outdoor play. Day nurseries offer continuity of care and your child doesn’t have to stay all day – many day nurseries will do half days or you can collect early.

Nursery schools

So, your little one’s growing up and it’s time to start thinking about nurseries. Day nurseries, nursery schools, pre-schools – nurseries come in all shapes and sizes and navigating your way through them can be daunting. Whether you’re going back to work or just want your child to benefit from all that nursery has to offer, here is our guide to finding the best, and right, nursery for you. Studies have shown that children who attend nurseries can be more confident and often go on to do better at school. A good nursery will prepare your child for those first few nervewracking weeks at school, plus most children thrive on the stimulation at nursery. Another advantage is the year-round care they offer, and you know your child is being looked after by qualified staff who won’t become ill and need time off work – at least not all at the same time!

Nursery classes in schools

The first step in ‘real’ school life, these can be excellent for children who are ready for school and structured, educational play. They are convenient if you already have siblings at the school, but again sessions are often only 3 hours long which may not be practical. Nursery classes in independent schools are more likely to offer full school-day sessions but nursery classes attached to state schools are free! It’s important to remember that a school nursery place does not automatically guarantee a place in reception.

Pre-schools and playgroups

Playgroups usually take children from 2.5yrs, offering short sessions to 'ease' your child out of the home and into a more sociable learning environment where they can play, learn and have fun. Playgroups have a varied mix of toys, games, singing, story-time, arts and crafts and usually an outdoor area. Parents are encouraged to be active members of the playgroup and their small-scale settings are less daunting for shy children. They are also excellent value for money as they tend to be not-for-profit and are sometimes staffed by volunteers, with parents staying to help out.

Nursery schools are often more formal in the way they structure sessions. They usually take children from 2.5-3 years and provide a grounding for starting school, teaching letters, shapes, numbers and sometimes even early-stage reading. Nursery schools give children the opportunity to make friends of the same age as most require children to do either 5 morning or 5 afternoon sessions, so the same children will be there everyday. They are often smaller scale with a personal touch, too, but perhaps are not so convenient for working families.

A number of Centres offer affordable, flexible childcare for up to 10 hours a day. Worth considering!

CHECKLIST Once you’ve found a nursery, go and have a look. Go back again if you’re still not sure. A good nursery will welcome a visit and might even let your child join in. By watching the other children you’ll get a good idea of whether it's the right environment for your child. Start early! “It sounds ridiculous, but I put my bump down for nursery when I was pregnant,” says Camille, mother of one. “OK, I wasted a few registration fees, but at least I got a place at the nursery I really wanted.” Near or far? Think about the time it takes to get to nursery. There’s a lot to be said for a nursery around the corner from home, and it helps bring down your carbon footprint. Does the nursery have a welcoming, happy, cheerful atmosphere? Some nurseries offer cosy, home-like environments whereas others have more room to run around in. A child-friendly outdoor space can be a real draw when choosing a nursery, especially for lively boys. Also, check basic things like security, cleanliness and equipment “Looks aren’t everything,” says Kate, mother of 3. “If a nursery is a bit shabby it could still be fantastic in terms of quality of care. And perfect, pristine equipment is maybe not being used!” Watch the staff. Look at their ages – the younger staff may have energy but the older ones have experience and usually more patience. “My preference is always an owner-run nursery,” says Marianna, mum of 2. “It’s their own business and they’ll really care about it.” Are the carers interacting with the children or are they just chatting to each other? Look at staff turnover and ask if the nursery ever uses agency staff

Know what to look for... Consider your child’s routine. “My little one sleeps 1-3pm,” says Alice, a first-time mum, “so afternoon nursery is no good for me.” Many parents also want a nursery that provides all meals – but do consider what your child is being fed and where it is cooked! What does the nursery offer? How are the sessions structured? Look for a mix of fun along with quieter activities. Do they take the older children on outings? How much is your child learning in preparation for school? Do you want them to learn letters and numbers? “I wish someone had told me about nurseries that feed into schools,” complains Lissy. “I wanted my daughter to go to a school where she needed to pass an assessment, but the nursery I sent her to didn’t prepare her and when she was asked to write her name at the assessment she burst into tears!” 3 to 5 year olds are taught according to a framework set out by the Government’s Early Years Foundation Stage but some nurseries will go far beyond this academically. Read the latest OFSTED report - a great way for detailed info on everything from quality of care and education to cleanliness and opportunities for play. Although all nurseries follow OFSTED guidelines, there’s room for interpretation! How flexible will the nursery be if you need to swap a day or add an afternoon? You’ll soon discover how useful this can be. The best way to choose a nursery is gut instinct. Look at whether the children are relaxed, happy, stimulated and engaged. If it clicks, it’s probably right!

Explained All 3 and 4 year olds are entitled to 15 hours of free early-education a week for 38 weeks of the year. This applies until they reach compulsory school age (the term following their fifth birthday), and can be applied flexibly over a minimum of three days. Free early education places are available at a range of early years settings including nursery schools and classes, children's centres, day nurseries, play groups and pre-schools and childminders. Your child will be eligible for the Nursery Education Grant from the term after their third birthday. Making money in today’s climate is extremely difficult and we’re all having to make our cash go much further either by working more hours or being extra thrifty, spending a lot less than we have been used to in the past. With this in mind, Southsea mum Abigail Pallant-Sidaway set up the Southsea Boutique Market, a place for local people to have a chance to sell and be discovered. If you’re a fan of handmade or just like to admire beautiful objects that are a little bit different, then you may have already come across the Boutique Market. The market has gone from strength to strength since it’s humble beginnings at St Swithun’s Church in March last year. They now run monthly events in Southsea at Little Johnny Russell’s pub and Portsmouth Guildhall, which has now become the largest free entry indoor market in the UK. 'I wanted it to be different, interesting and affordable for everyone.’ Abigail told us. ‘The first one back in March was amazing, we opened the doors when everyone was ready, to discover that we had people queuing down the street waiting to come in!” 2011 has been an incredible year for Abigail. The Guildhall asking her to get involved was a real booster for the business, meaning that there were endless amounts of space and a whole new audience to discover more vintage, handmade and retro items. Then in November the Historic Dockyard also got the Boutique Market involved for their prestigious Victorian Festival of Christmas which was attended by 28,000 people. “Everyone loves coming to the markets, we always receive such positive feedback on the great atmosphere and quality of stalls. It’s been hard work as a single parent of three but worth every minute.”

Le Leche League Breast Feeding Groups

n my way to a Le Leche League group I feel nervous – after all, my son stopped feeding 6 years ago and frankly I feel I’m missing some vital ingredients to fit in! Having been to only one other breast feeding group when my son was a baby and not finding it particularly useful or comfortable, I was interested to see what was different about LLL. If you’ve not heard of them, Le Leche League is an international charity run locally by individuals or teams of mothers that feel they want to do something to support women who wish to breastfeed. Their philosophy is to help women to breastfeed through motherto-mother support, encouragement, information and education. It is their belief that mothering through breast feeding deepens our understanding and acceptance of the responsibilities and rewards of motherhood. Here in the Portsmouth area, meetings are held every month at Francis Community Lodge - The meetings are relaxed, but at the same time follow themes of discussion which are tailored to the individual needs of each group. The discussion topics allow the opportunity to talk openly with fellow mums about breastfeeding and gain the knowledge, support and guidance through what is a beautiful but at times trying stage of mothering. Some of the topics include the advantages of breastfeeding, dealing with and/or avoiding problems, as well as nutrition and weaning. Like many groups, there is no fee to come to LLL but any donations are welcome. The idea of the group is to work organically in that one or two visiting Mums may

one day feel they too could lead the groups and continue the service for other new mothers.

Mums Mean Business! to Forever Living 6 years ago, a company that allowed her a way of working that she found inspiring - 'I work from home, fitting my job around my 3 children within the nooks and crannies of a very hectic family life. I am there for all of their plays, sports days, and various activities and through the school holidays, I now have an extremely good income, which increases month on month. I work approximately 10 – 15 hours per week with a team of fantastic people.'

In the first of our new Mums Mean Business feature, I interviewed Hesione Waugh, a local single mother of 3 working as a Manager for Forever Living, the leading supplier of Aloe Vera products in the UK. Originally from Truro Cornwall, Hesione moved to the Portsmouth area in 1999 and is now settled in Fareham with her children Saskia 15yrs and twins Leon and Freya 13yrs. Before her children, Hesione worked as a PA in the City. While she enjoyed her job, she didn’t get any of the benefits and bonuses her colleagues were receiving and, like many of us trying to work to support ourselves and our families, found that she was missing out on her children and struggling to make her career and family life work together. ‘I didn’t want to work part time on minimum wage so I began to look at what was out there’ Hesione explains. She was introduced

Some things you might not know about Aloe..... There are over two hundred different species of aloe plants. The liquid from the plants is used extensively in beauty products and as an antiseptic, especially good for cuts, burns and bruises. The plant originated in tropical Africa but its use has spread widely across the continents. It is an ideal plant to keep in your bedroom as it releases oxygen and absorbs carbon dioxide at night. In 1862 George Ebers discovered it cited in an ancient Egyptian Papyrus, dated 3500 BC, which was a collection of herbal remedies. Other researchers have since found that it was used by both the ancient Chinese and Indian Cultures. The plant reaches maturity after four years when the content of its leaves can be harvested. Often mistaken for a cactus, it is actually a member of the Lilly family. It is generally revered for its benefits for the immune system as well as skin complaints such as eczema and psoriasis. Cooking with Kids (or How to Get a Key Chore Done Whilst Teaching Your Kids a Life Skill!) Many parents find they can’t get a thing done in the house when they have their children to entertain. So why not do things differently? How about getting your children to help you in the kitchen and actually make some of the food they eat for lunch or dinner? It’ll get them away from the TV, teach them some valuable skills, and boost their self-esteem. OK, in the short term, it may mean more mess – but think ahead a few years to your child able to make the family lunch when a teenager. And we’re not talking baking biscuits or cupcakes either, we mean proper family food. Menus4Mums, the online family meal planners, and Crafty Cooks, who run cooking classes for children, have joined forces to bring us these top tips and recipes for you to try.

Getting started

Involve the children in shopping, do it when you have time and try places other than a stressful supermarket. Use farm shops and butchers where the children can look around at the food, teach them how to choose a good item, be it as simple as checking an apple for bruises, the more children are involved the more fun they'll have.

You are the best judge of what your child is capable of, but generally speaking, most primary school children should be able to do basic cutting up under supervision, and younger children could decorate pizzas.

Combine cooking with maths! Let the children help you prepare for cooking by weighing out ingredients - try and use either balancing scales, or scales with a dial that they can understand. If using a dial you can place a sticker where the dial needs to go for Choose some simple dishes to ensure success. For example, the right weight to make it more visual filled jacket potatoes, chicken wraps, sandwiches, tomato for them to understand. pasta sauce, garlic bread, fish goujons, fruit skewers.

Set up a chair so the children can wash any fruit and vegetables in a sink of water, they'll love it!

Pasta with Roasted Vegetable Sauce

Feeds 4

This is a great starter recipe for children to get involved in, they will love getting their hands in tossing the veg in olive oil, spooning the passata and crumbling the stock. All you need........ • 250g cherry tomatoes • 1 red pepper, cut into 1 inch squares • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 400ml tomato passata • 1 tsp oregano • 350g pasta

1 courgette, cut into rounds 2 red onions, cut into 1 inch chunks 3 tbsp olive oil 200ml vegetable stock grated parmesan or other cheese

What to do: 1. Heat the oven to 240C or Gas 9. Put the vegetables (including garlic) in a roasting tin and toss in the olive oil. Roast for 30 mins or until the vegetables are brown at the edges. 2. Put the vegetables in a pan with the tomato passata, vegetable stock, and oregano. Simmer for 10 mins. Then blend to your desired consistency, perhaps pureed for small children and chunky for older children.

3. Cook the pasta according to packet instructions, drain, then stir into the pasta sauce. Sprinkle cheese and enjoy!
