Thousands of families and children in homes and schools across the land take part every year – wearing hats of all shapes, sizes and colours, getting involved in an amazing array of fun and inventive events, making and collecting donations from everyone around, all helping to raise awareness and funds for vital research. Brain tumours are scary – this disease is the biggest cancer killer of both children and adults under 40 yet the science is woefully underfunded, receiving less than 1% of national cancer research spend. Stand out from the crowd and wear a hat for Brain Tumour Research on March 28th.

Christmas might have passed but give the gift of reading this New Year to your sons! Broadcaster Simon Mayo, author of the Itch series, is supporting a new drive to get boys reading and writing, as National Literacy Trust research shows boys’ are half as likely to enjoy writing and reading than girls. The trust calls for a renewed focus both at school and at home on ways to get boys into writing. ‘It’s so important for boys to find a topic that interests them before they pick up a pen and start writing,’ says Simon Mayo, whose protagonist is a 14-yearold boy obsessed with science. ‘I wasn’t particularly interested in writing at school but I was hampered by being fantastically slow. When I started writing the first Itch book it was as a short story for my son, but then I was completely captivated by the plot and characters, and the story took over. Stop shouting!

Get out in nature

No-one likes to be shouted at, and noone likes to live in an angry atmosphere, so make the change yourself. Resolve to keep your cool and talk out any problems. Anger only breeds resentment, which can lead to long-term family rifts - talking, in contrast, leads to better understanding and closer families.

It’s been proven that playing and learning outdoors has profound benefits for children, but most of them don’t have the freedom that was taken for granted just a generation ago. Get outdoors as much as you can (why not join the National Trust and take advantage of their gorgeous grounds?), and improve your family’s health and wellbeing. You could even take a leaf out of the book of Tim and Kerry Meek, from Nottingham, who set their two daughters (aged 8 and 10) 100 challenges, such as canoeing down a river and sleeping under the stars. Focus on the positive Resolve to look on the bright side in 2014 – it’s better for you and sets a great example. Seeing the silver lining to every cloud helps people cope and doesn’t need to be unrealistic.

Make one night of the week Family Games Night The humble board game has many benefits - it brings the family together, it teaches sharing, counting and turntaking, and most of all it’s fun! Wean the children off their screens for one night and get them around a table, and you should soon see an improvement in everyone’s mood.

Take on a charity challenge Give any fitness goals a boost by getting the family involved in a team challenge for charity. Not sure what to do or who to support? Turtle Tots Baby and Toddler Swimming Classes Local Drama Business Flying High Pyjama Drama, which offers drama and imaginative play classes for children, is flying high in the face of the recession with the appointment of three new members of the team and new classes to start in January. Lisa Armstrong, who set up the business two years ago has taken on two new session leaders to run classes and an assistant to help with marketing. Explaining further she said, “When I originally set up the business I did wonder if it would be a huge challenge to get it off the ground during a recession but Pyjama Drama has proved to be really popular with parents, nurseries and schools from the outset. A couple of months ago I took the decision to expand so that we can run more sessions and I’m delighted to have found such talented people to join the team. My new session leaders, Ashley Thomas and Helen Mallon are incredibly talented, they have fantastic backgrounds in theatre and both went to the prestigious Royal Scottish Academy Of Music and Drama (Now Royal Conservatoire). I’m also going to be working, on a part-time basis, with Caroline Campbell when it comes to marketing.” To celebrate the second anniversary of Pyjama Drama, Lisa is launching new Pyjama Drama classes on Wednesday mornings from Wednesday January 8th at Sporty Kids West End Soft Play with entry to the soft play included in the cost of the class. More classes are planned for the future as well as January also being the official launch month of Pyjama Drama’s party programme with a wide range of exciting themes to choose from. Baby Steps to Music is a six week music course especially for babies aged 0-6 months and their parents. The course has been created and is delivered by Katie Dick, a mum and professional early years musician and is the perfect first introduction to music for you and your little one! Baby Steps to Music has been carefully developed with the needs of young babies and new mums and dads in mind and aims to teach parents a range of traditional and modern nursery songs, rhymes and lullabies as well as help parents feel confident singing to the their baby. Each class incorporates songs, rhymes and lullabies for gentle knee bouncing, rocking, swaying, cuddling and tickling. Scarves, puppets, percussion and live music (Katie is a violinist) are use to enhance the experience but the focus remains on parents singing and interacting closely with their baby. Katie says, “A lot of parents recognise the benefits of singing to their baby from as early an age as possible however many people are anxious about doing so or may simply not know where to start”. Baby Steps to Music offers a friendly and supportive environment where mums and dads can relax and enjoy a special time in the week sharing music with their baby. There is time at the end of each class to socialise with the other parents too and tea/ coffee is provided. The course runs on Mondays between 11.30am-12.30pm and takes place at St Marys Cathedral (Kelvinbridge). Various start dates are available throughout the year.The next course begins on Monday 24th February. How to choose your child’s nursery

I

t’s one of the most important decisions you’ve made for your child in his or her life so far. So which nursery is the right one – and how do you know? Joanna Moorhead shares some tips. There are all sorts of different nurseries out there. Big ones, small ones; ones run by the local council, and ones run by independent companies. There are nurseries attached to primary schools including independent schools, and there are stand-alone nurseries. When you start out looking for one, the plethora of what’s out there can make it all seem very daunting. But here’s the first, the most important, and possibly even the only thing you need to know about how to make your choice. Listen to the voice inside your head, heed your instinct about what’s right for your child, and you’ll almost certainly make the ‘correct’ choice. Because the truth, of course, is that there isn’t a ‘right’ nursery or a ‘wrong’ one; there is, however, a nursery that will suit your child best, because it will mesh in with your own and your partner’s ideas about how to raise a child, and what matters most in his or her life. All of which is why what you feel inside you about a nursery will give you the biggest guide as to what to go on.

Looking round

To kick the process off, you’ll need to put together a list of nurseries in your area (or perhaps in the area where you work, if you’re thinking your child can be cared for at nursery while you work nearby). Comb through the nurseries in your area online; look at the Education Scotland reports for any you think sound promising. Think about what factors matter most to you in a nursery (see our checklist) and then make appointments to look around a selection of those that have, or might have, vacancies. When you look round, don’t be too anxious about all the

questions you need to ask or whether you’re going to miss something vital. Instead, switch on all your ‘vibes’ and take in the holistic sense of the place. Does it feel friendly, and welcoming, and a fun place to be, from what you can see of it? Do staff treat you warmly – are you convinced by what they’re telling you? Do you, in a nutshell, feel a sense of confidence about the place; would you feel confident about leaving the most important person in your life, your child, here in the care of the people you’ve met? If the answer is yes, the nursery you’ve just seen is a possible one for you; if you have any doubts whatsoever about this most crucial thing, whether you’re confident about leaving your baby there, cross it off your list at once. Little Stars nursery at Hillington has a £70k makeover

L

ittle Stars Nursery at Hillington Park has just had a £70,000 refurbishment and is looking fabulous for 2014. The new management at the nursery have completed a massive series of improvement works including painting all the rooms, installing energy efficient lights, lowering ceilings, laying new flooring and installing a new kitchen. News from Somerset Nursery It has been a very busy year for Somerset Nursery. The children have participated in a wide range of extra-curricular activities including their weekly swimming and football lessons as well as progressing with their French lessons. Why Children in Scotland Should Go to School Later By Hilary Long, Manager of Woodland Outdoor Kindgartens

W

ith a fierce battle currently underway in England between the Department of Education and a group of campaigners regarding the right age for children to go to school, Hilary Long, Manager of Woodland Outdoor Kindergartens in Glasgow explains why she believes children in Scotland should go to school later. “I am very interested in the debate being conducted in England regarding the age at which children should start school. The current ‘Too Much Too Soon’ lobby is very relevant for children in Scotland too. Children here may not have to go to school until they are 5 years of age, however, the reality is that many go at 4.6 years if they are 4 before the end of February preceding the start of the term in August. I am regularly approached by parents who are anxious about their child commencing formal education and whilst I respect the decisions that parents make I always recommend deferral. This is based on over 30 years of experience in early years education and being a parent of three children. So what is the fuss about? The recent revelation that Britain is doing very badly compared with many other countries in relation to all areas of learning, particularly in literacy and numeracy, forces us to think about the reasons why at a time when politicians would like children to start formal education at an even earlier age. Finland is the country that shines and children there don’t start school until they are 7.

I am privileged to be the manager of Woodland Outdoor Kindergartens in Glasgow. The only all day outdoors whateverthe-weather nursery in an urban setting in Scotland. Our ethos is on child-led, child initiated learning with a strong non-invasive adult presence. Children are able to follow their own interests and concerns within an environment where there is managed risk. Our children play all day long without the need for expensive resources and ‘screens’ which research tell us are extremely bad for the developing brain. So the argument goes beyond containment in the classroom to the bigger question of what do children need? The answer – a childhood that is as long as possible and freedom to develop as well rounded, happy, active, well-adjusted wee people. Play, preferably outdoors that is unstructured and not dominated by adults who are concerned about the ‘learning outcomes’ is the way to ensure that children are healthier, have better balance and coordination, are more attentive and concentrate better, demonstrate more creativity, develop more sophisticated use of language and develop social skills and general awareness as well as grow in confidence and independence. In Britain less than 10% of children play in woodland. Children ‘think with their hands’. They are instinctively drawn to ‘hands on’ experiences. This cannot be replicated in a classroom. The rat race begins in nursery too. In Scotland the Curriculum for Excellence has 137 experiences and outcomes across 8 curriculum areas. This is the ‘early level’ and it starts at 3 years and all should be achieved by the end of Primary 1! Children are the best judges of their own needs. They eat when they are hungry and sleep when they are tired. They will learn in their own way and at their own pace. The ‘how’ of learning is at least as important as what is learned. Play is a means of understanding the world and it is being undermined by a target orientated society. Early Years workers are expected to plan, assess, moderate and provide ‘evidence’ of how children are progressing. Sadly many of them lose the original spark that brought them there in the first place. Routines, policies, structures and more and more external demands are capable of destroying their enthusiasm. It also impacts on children. They are best developed through self-discipline, self-initiated and self-directed activities that inform them about their value and their sense of identity. Formal education at such a young age and particularly for boys just cannot deliver this personal belief, empowerment and creativity now recognised as essential criteria for personal success. The early years of a child’s life are not about getting them ‘school ready’. It is about a childhood and supporting children’s natural development. Importantly the adults involved must have an in depth knowledge and understanding of child development. An element that is sadly lacking in a lot of qualifications. High School of Glasgow School News Since August, Junior School children have enjoyed a variety of activities and experiences. Highlights have included visits to the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum by Junior 1 and Junior 6, and to Vikingar at Largs by Junior 4, while Kindergarten took part in their autumn walk at Mugdock Country Park. Junior 5 along with pupils from Baljaffray Primary benefited from an Institution of Civil Engineers initiative, with a 7 meter span cable stayed bridge being built in the Drama Hall. Members of the Country Dancing Club participated in the Bearsden Festival, while there were pupil winners in the “Write a Ghost Story” competition. Pupils have enthusiastically supported charity events, including a Junior 2 “Bring and Buy” Toy Fayre for Yorkhill Hospital, a “Dressas-you-please” day for the Children’s Hospice Association and a charity assembly in aid of the Philippines communities. At the Senior School, last year’s 5th Year pupils had a 96% pass rate in their Highers, with each pupil averaging 4.9 Higher passes each, the highest figure nationally. Senior pupils produced outstanding performances of the musical, “Me and My Girl” and the Chamber Choir, the “Songs of

Praise” Senior Choir of the Year 2013, again appeared on BBC TV. The hockey 1st XI won the BP Cup and qualified for the Scottish Schools’ finals for the third year in succession. Bannerman and Clyde Houses organised fundraising for Build Africa and the Mahar project in India, respectively. Congratulations to the four young mathematicians, Lewis Ip, Lucy Robinson & Abbey MacCuish (all SP) and Matthew Webb (J6), who are through to the next round of the Explore Learning Maths Competition. They are now one of the top 4 teams in the West of Scotland. The next round is the 27th November. On Friday, 15th November eight Junior 6 pupils took part in the Glasgow Fun Fives Festival held at Tollcross. The team were undefeated; they played 7 matches, winning 6 and drawing 1. They were lucky enough to meet Rachel Holmes. She is currently in the Scottish Netball Team and hopes to be part of the Commonwealth Games next summer. Congratulations to Victoria Ash (S2) who performed Brittens’ War Requiem with the RSNO Chorus at the weekend. Well done to the 1st XV who beat Biggar High School in the Final of the Glasgow North U18 Plate. So it’s on to the National ¼ Finals – 3 more games hopefully this season! Congratulations to the 1st XI Hockey team who are through to the Plate Final after beating St Aloysius’ in the Semi’s. Hard work and dedication paid off for Kelvinside Academy pupil Ryan Rutherford (S5) and former pupil Hayley Rutherford (2013). Alongside their father, Paul, they each finished champions of their class at the World Powerlifting Championships held at Scotstoun Stadium. Congratulations.

Nursery Our family-friendly, bright and welcoming Nurseries on our three sites care for children from the age of three. Well-trained and enthusiastic staff motivate younger children to learn through play and experiences that enable them to build confidence and skills for their next step to Kindergarten.
