Happy holidays at Hollycombe – a great value ticket to last you all summer and beyond Hollycombe Working Steam Museum on the Hampshire and Surrey border offers a true ‘three generations’ visit, with a traditional fairground, train rides, working steam engines and woodland walks. With the arrival of the summer holidays the popular attraction has extended opening of Tuesdays to Sundays (and also Bank Holiday Monday) between 1st – 28th August. You can ask our builders what they’re doing as the Tudor roof is stripped bare and repaired. Young visitors can get a good view from Perspex-walled balconies and listen out for the crash of their pound coins landing at the bottom of a coin-drop. A guide to buying new School Shoes When it comes to buying school shoes for your children, the importance of making the right choice of footwear can’t be overstressed. Poorly fitting shoes can cause painful problems, which your children could carry with them into later life. In fact, your child’s feet will continue to grow and develop until they reach their teens, so getting it right now is vital.

Measuring your child’s feet Because your child’s feet will continue to grow in fits and starts, it’s important to have them measured by a trained, professional shoe fitter in a shoe shop every eight weeks or so. The fitter will measure your child’s feet from the tip of their longest toe to the back of their heel and across the widest part of the foot. From these measurements, the correct size and fitting of shoe can be determined. You can quickly check the fit of your child’s shoes each month yourself, in between professional fittings. There should be roughly a thumbnail’s length between the end of the shoe and your child’s toes, in order to allow for movement and growth.

What to look for when choosing school shoes There are a number of important things that you should look for when choosing school shoes for your kids. A firm heel cup is very important. The heel supports the foot and needs to be held in a straight position. If the heel leans to one side or the other, pain and postural problems could arise. Try pressing gently on the sides of the heel - if it sinks in easily, the shoe is not providing sufficient support. The shoe should have a strap, Velcro or laces to prevent the shoe from slipping forward and scrunching your child’s toes. Ill-fitting shoes that crush the toes can lead to permanent problems like clawed or hammer toes. The shoe sole should be flexible at the ball of the foot only and it should have sufficient cushioning so that the foot is supported comfortably when your little one runs or skips. Shoe material should be breathable and water resistant. If your child’s feet sweat and can’t breathe, smelly feet and fungal infections can result.

Children are not always good at telling their parents when they have problems with ill-fitting shoes, so you may need to play detective and be on alert for problems. The following signs are usually indicative of poorly-fitting shoes:

Trainers are a much better choice for kids as they can provide plenty of support as well as being comfortable and breathable.

Ugg boots or similar should only be used as slippers as they don’t provide enough support to the feet to be worn on a daily basis as outdoor footwear.

High-heeled shoes are not a good idea for school because of the pressure that is exerted on your child’s toes.

Overly heavy shoes should be avoided as they can put too much strain on growing feet and can encourage clawing and clenching of the toes.

Shared Parenting to make the summer holidays less stressful would not be comfortable for your child to visit? If your children have a different surname to the parent they are travelling with, remember that some airport securities will expect a letter of consent from the mother or father. This is a simple letter to say that you agree to the child being taken out of the country for that period.

Shared parenting can be tricky at times and it is inevitable that separated or divorced parents may encounter difficulties in agreeing arrangements for the children especially during school holidays. To avoid stress in the summer holidays, a detailed parenting plan or agreed schedule for contact can make life easier for both the parents and the children. •

Plan early – put together your plan for the 6 weeks holidays earlier in the year to allow time to discuss or make changes.

While often a touchy subject, it is important to discuss when it is appropriate to include new partners in holiday time.

•

If you have any family events or you want to plan a holiday away, communicate with your ex-partner promptly to avoid any clashes or issues.

•

A detailed plan for the holidays and half terms will also help you organise any holiday you need to obtain from work and also highlight where you may need additional childcare from family, childminders or holiday clubs.

Discuss your child’s clothing and belongings. Children may wish to take certain toys, games or devices to the other parent’s house. It is important that this is agreed on and that items are looked after and returned. With electronic devices such as phones, tablets or game consoles it is important that both parents try to value the same rules about usage, downloads and ‘screen time’.

Agree on holidays abroad – for example how long will you allow for your child to be out of the country, is it one week? Or two weeks? How will you keep in contact whilst away? Are there any countries or places you

Finances – depending on your financial agreements upon separation, you may need to discuss how children will be financed during the holidays. For example, who will be paying for the holiday clubs?
