The free leisure discount card for 0-25s with special educational needs and disabilities West Sussex County Council have teamed up with local charity, Amaze, to deliver ‘Compass Card West Sussex’, a card which provides special deals at dozens of venues in the local area for young people under 25 who have special educational needs and disabilities.

The 24 hour virtual library service allows library users to borrow titles for up to three weeks with no charges or late fees. It is compatible to use with most popular eReaders and tablets such as Kindle Fire, iPad and Android tablets and phones.

The child or young person should be 0 to 25 years old (card expires on 25th birthday) and should have a disability or special educational need that has a big effect on their daily living. Usually that means they will be eligible for DLA (Disability Living Allowance) or PIP (Personal Independence Payment) and/or have an EHC (Education Health and Care) or Moving On plan. Use a pool noodle to keep your kid from rolling out of bed. If your kid’s an active sleeper, those first few nights in a big-kid bed are nail-biters. Will he roll out of bed and hit the floor? Wedge a pool noodle (or a tightly rolled-up towel) along the edge, between the mattress and the fitted sheet. The resulting bump is just enough of a barrier to keep your kid in bed through the night. Looking after your children during the summer holidays is no easy feat for any working parent, with many mums and dads resorting to booking their annual leave separately to ensure someone keeps an eye on the kids. But it doesn’t have to be that way – regardless of your budget, there are many affordable solutions to keep those wages coming in while your little ones enjoy the summer.

Relatives

First, look at close family members to see if anyone could help. Your parents or in-laws are ideal, as most will revel in the chance to bond with – and spoil – their grandchildren. Just remember to stick to set times and help by sending your kids with pocket money towards that trip to the zoo. It might be free for you, but it won’t be free for them!

School mums

Have a chat with mums at the school gates to see if they can help. Make sure you only ask people you feel confident leaving your child with, and take a box of chocolates over at the end of the day as a thank you. Most mums might instead prefer a ‘swap’ in return, where they look after your child one day and you look after theirs another.

Childminders

Childminders are a great option over the holidays, with many parents sticking to the same person they normally use during term time. Ask friends who they recommend, or look online for Ofsted-registered carers. Just remember to ask what stipulations they have, such as whether you still pay if your child is sick or you go away.

If they agree to you working from home be sure to complete all your tasks on time – regardless of any distractions! FUN DAYS Fancy dress

Festivals are a great way to introduce your children to a variety of music, foods and experiences. Many local festivals are aimed at the whole family and with some careful planning and by packing a few essentials, you’ll all have a great time.

Site Map Take time to orient yourself around the site, find where your favourite bands will be and most importantly, check out where the loos and showers are. These can get very busy and there are often long queues. For small kids, take a travel potty, as kids often need to ‘go’ quite suddenly. Most festivals have a craft and activities area for kids too. Establish a meeting point that is easy to recognise and find, so that if you do get separated, everyone knows where to meet. Pushchairs can be tricky to use if the ground is muddy. Carriers are more portable and take up less space. If camping, try to camp in the family or quiet areas so that you won’t all be kept awake by people coming back to their tents (in all conditions!) through the night.

Some festivals have a fancy dress parade as part of the fun, so take costumes, but make sure they are comfortable! Some things can be made on-site at a craft stall. Face paints are great to pack, as are glow sticks and bubbles.

Safety Kids should have your name (not theirs) and number on them in case they get separated. Write it on their arm, or buy luggage tags and attach them to their clothes and bags. Talk to them about how to behave should they get lost. Make sure your phone is charged, so if your kids do get separated, you are able to be contacted. Dress your kids in bright clothes so you can spot them and take a photo of them each morning, so if they go wandering, you can remember how they were dressed and show others. Don’t take valuables and keep things you can’t leave behind, such as phone, keys, your purse and credit cards, with you in a day pack all day. Never leave them in your tent.

Brighton Fringe 6 May - 5 June The Moscow State Circus, stars from CBeebies and CBBC, familiar faces from the UK music scene and smash-hit theatre from across the world are coming to Brighton Fringe this year. Family savings and tips! Perfect homemade pizza Pizza is a great dish to make with, and for, the family. The kids can join in with rolling out the dough and choosing their own toppings. It’s not as difficult (or unhealthy!) as it may seem, and with just a little effort you will get great results, and never go back to supermarket pizza again. The instructions given here are using a Kenwood Chef - if you don’t have a machine, it’s still possible to make dough, you just need a bit of elbow grease!

Ingredients: • 500g ‘00’ flour • Pinch of sea salt • 7g sachet of dried instant yeast • tsp caster sugar • 30ml extra virgin olive oil • 325ml water • Passata • Grated cheese • Chosen toppings

Method: 1. Add the flour, salt, yeast & sugar to the mixer bowl and attach the dough hook 2. Add the olive oil & half the water & set the machine running 3. Add more water slowly, until a sticky (but not wet) dough is formed Keep the machine running for a few minutes until the dough is soft & elastic 5. Place in a lightly oiled bowl & cover & leave in a warm place to double in size 6. Divide into 2 (for large pizzas) or 6 (for individual pizzas) 7. Roll out on a floured surface 8. Place on a baking sheet & spread passata over pizza bases 9. Cover with grated cheese & mozzarella & add chosen toppings 10. Bake in preheated 200C oven for approx.15 minutes

Together, local parents Tracie, Heather & Nikki are THiNk Cook, a small company teaching young people how to cook good, healthy meals from scratch. We have teamed up to bring you some tips & ideas for around the kitchen, from limiting wastage to saving money and how to get the whole family eating more veg!

If you have lingering smells in your fridge that are putting you off opening the door, put some bicarbonate of Soda into a small container and leave in the fridge overnight.

Turn left over cream into garlic butter! Put the cream, crushed garlic & a pinch of salt into an empty clean jam jar. Close the lid tightly & shake vigorously until the liquid forms a lump. Pour away the excess whey & you are left with butter.

Don’t store bananas with other fruits - it makes them ripen quicker!

If you have some peppers you are not going to use, slice them up & put in a freezer bag & seal. You can then use them straight from the freezer in many dishes like fajitas.

Make your own breadcrumbs from stale bread. Put a couple of slices into the food processor & blitz for a few seconds.

What’s in Season? Another way to save money and hopefully not have your food travel so far is to eat seasonal fruit and vegetables.

New Potatoes, Spinach, aspa ragus Watercress, Rocket & Green Bea ns are all available & all can be used to m ake a wonderful fr esh salad!

Rhubarb is still available, you can cook it and freeze it but remember to use it within 3 months. You must cook the rhubarb as it cannot be eaten raw. Also strawberries are ready now & raspberries are also coming into season. These are best eaten as fresh as possible but you can freeze these as they are and use them in crumbles, smoothies or in yogurt to make a healthy dessert. A great way to make sure you are getting fresh seasonal goods is to go to your local farm shop or pick your own farm. These can be cheaper than the supermarkets & are a great way to support your local economy. Pick your own is also a great way to spark children’s interest in fruit & veg. They are more likely to eat what they have picked & cooked themselves.
