FTH Theatre, Falkirk 2018
There are so many exciting family shows coming to FTH Theatre this year. Based on the beautifully moving book, ‘Guess how much I love you’ is brought to life with puppets and live music. We see the return of the popular Horrible Histories with ‘More Barmy Britain’, with all the bits of history the adults don’t tell you about. ‘Granddad and Me’ explores love, loss and the lovely relationship between children and their grandparents. We are delighted to bring you the all singing all dancing ‘Milkshake Live’ with all your favourite characters on the stage from Bob the Builder, Fireman Sam to Noddy, Little Princess and much more. HippFest returns in March The golden age of silent cinema returns to Bo’ness in March (Wednesday 21st to Sunday 25th) with events for audiences of all ages. The Hippodrome Silent Film Festival (or HippFest as it is affectionately known) includes classic comedy from Laurel and Hardy, alongside workshops, competitions and family fun, as well as its hugely popular Jeely Jar event giving you 2-for-1 entry if you bring a clean jam jar with you. The full 2018 programme is announced on 6th February. Last year, family highlights included the Scottish premiere of the ‘lost’ film ‘The Battle of the Century’ and a double-bill with Neil Brand on the platform at Bo’ness Heritage Railway Station. Change a child’s future with Stirling Council Enhanced Fostering Service As part of developing an Enhanced Fostering Service, Stirling Council are looking to recruit a small number of Full-Time and Short Break Foster Carers. As an Enhanced Foster Carer you will have the opportunity to care for local children who often have complex needs, particularly older children and teenagers. We’re looking for warm, caring people who have childcare experience, want to make a real difference and have no children under the age of 16 living in their home. Above all, we require carers who are committed to caring for Stirling’s most vulnerable children. How to keep energy levels up during the winter How to keep energy levels up during the Winter
I
t’s that time of year when we all begin feeling a little sluggish and even lively children may lose their get up and go – literally - when hauling them out of bed for school. So how can you maximise winter energy levels, so they make the most of school, learning and life in general? Maximise sleep Getting sufficient rest boosts the chances of your child waking refreshed the next day. The NHS recommends a five year old should receive 11 hours sleep per night, steadily reducing to 9.5 hours by the age of 11. Work back from when they need to get up to determine optimal bedtimes. If changes are afoot, simply phase them in gently – say moving ten minutes earlier a day for a few days. Consider a ‘wake up gently’ alarm clock Ditch the shock of sudden, loud alarms and bright lights switching on, in favour of an alarm clock that mimics sunrise by gradually increasing lighting levels. These can make waking up and getting out of bed less of a thing to dread on dark mornings, hopefully reducing grouchiness. Some also have a sunset stimulation mode; ideal for encouraging little ones to doze off at bedtime. Start mornings with hearty but healthy breakfasts Swap sugar-loaded cereals for something more nutritious, warming and energyboosting. Warm porridge with fruit or scrambled eggs on toast are still quick and easy but make better ‘tummy-fillers’ to see kids through to lunchtime.
Boost the immune system Smoothies are a great way to get some 5-a-day into children and are often forgotten about in winter. Stock up on some frozen berries to add to fruit you have in the fruit bowl and you can whizz up a super healthy morning treat before the day begins. Put some lively music on at breakfast! If it’s gloomy outside and everyone’s half asleep…liven things up with some moodenhancing favourite tunes. The right music is a brilliant pick-me-up at any time of the day, so why not all get up off the sofa and have a dance for a few songs after school too. Walk to (and from) school It isn’t possible for everyone but if time and distance allows, leaving the car at home and walking is far more invigorating and will help ensure children are fully awake for the first lessons of the day. Walking is also lovely winding down/ catching up time on the way home. Watch out for ‘back to school blues’ It can be difficult going back to school after the Christmas holidays – getting up early again and the dark mornings! Try to get back into a good bedtime routine and keep the time after school and at weekends relatively quiet.
Keep bugs away Avoid those nasty winter bugs by encouraging your child to regularly wash their hands (not top of the list for many a kid).You can also provide your child with anti-bacterial hand gel to pop in their school bag, to use if needed during the day! Get outside at the weekends, whatever the weather It’s oh so tempting to be lazy on a Winter weekend, cosied up in the house. Whilst you may all benefit from downtime after a busy week, even an hour of fresh air and activity will do everyone good. Remember there’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing. Make sure everyone has decent waterproofs and wellies so you can get out there no matter what. By Liat Hughes Joshi

y name is Roslyn Dale and my little boy, Isaac, will be 1 in January. We live in Riverside, Stirling with my husband Bob. professional or local companies my friends are in. My husband and I understandably haven’t had many nights out together since the arrival of Isaac but when we have it’s usually been for a wedding!
Why you like living where you do? I think Stirling is a nice mix of city and countryside. Shops, restaurants and bars are so close but it takes no time at all to be walking through a woodland, up a hill or next to a loch. We live only 10 minutes walk into town and the train station which is fab. Glasgow and Edinburgh are so easy to get to which I love.
Proudest eco-friendly moment Isaac wears reusable nappies and he has done since day 1. Both my husband and I are very eco-conscious and try our best to do as much as we can for the planet.
Favourite shop I would probably have to say Sainsburys! For Isaac’s clothes I also like Marks and Spencer. For gifts and cards I love Charisma in Dunblane and Collections in Bridge of Allan, I could spend a fortune in both! Favourite children’s club/class: Isaac loves swimming and we’ve been taking him to Turtle Tots since he was 8 weeks old, he gets so excited in the pool and he’s made huge progress over the past few months. We also enjoy going to The Daisy Foundation classes at Springkerse and of course, Music Bugs. Favourite day out We’re only just getting to the age when Isaac enjoys days out so I’m looking forward to taking him to Briarlands and Blairdrummond Safari Park. We have been to Auchingarrich Wildlife Centre which was fantastic and more recently the Woodland Light Experience near Balfron which was lovely.
Best planet saving tip Cheeky wipes are fabulous. They are essentially small flannels you use instead of baby wipes. They are kept in water so there are no chemicals and you only need one per change instead of using several baby wipes at a time. Much gentler on a baby’s bum, good for the environment and saves money. No parent should be without Sock-ons. They are brilliant for keeping little socks on that keep slipping off or socks that keep being pulled off! Parenting pet hates People parking in parent and child spaces when they have no children with them! Or their children are teenagers! I don’t use a parent and child space so I’m closer to the front door of the shop, I need it so I can safely get my child out of their seat without worrying about being hit by another vehicle or bashing my door on someone else’s car.
Favourite child friendly restaurant We love going to Another Tilly Tearoom in Dunblane for lunch and we like Highland Gate in Stirling for dinner.
Most loved children’s book Isaac loves ‘Dear Zoo’ by Rod Campbell and all the books in Julia Donaldson’s Acorn Wood series (Postman Bear, Fox’s Socks, Rabbit’s Nap and Hide-and-Seek Pig). Lift-the-flap books are definitely a favourite at the moment but I have always loved reading him Julia Donaldson’s ‘The Gruffalo in Scots’.
Favourite night out without the kids I love musical theatre so a night off is usually to go and see a show, either
Most played with toys We have a cage bell from Music Bugs that Isaac is rarely seen without! His
favourite toys have always been the Lamaze Firefly, Dragon and Tiger and he has a Mamas and Papas Pidge-Pigeon. Like most babies, his favourite things to play with are shoes, paper, keys and cardboard boxes! Basically anything he’s not supposed to have! Biggest waste of money: I bought one of the snot suckers when Isaac had his first cold but he would not lie still for a second so it never got used! For which I am quite grateful to be honest. Most successful recipe/food Isaac loves avocadoes, bananas, sweet potato and French toast. A staple breakfast for Isaac which we learned at a brilliant NHS Under 1’s group is half a Weetabix mashed with half a (canned) pear and a tablespoon of natural yoghurt. Turtle Tots baby and toddler swimming – A Mum’s review: I started Turtle Tots with my 9-month-old son in February 2016. I was a bit apprehensive and wasn’t sure what to expect but I needn’t have worried as our instructor put me at ease straight away. Our first lesson was great and I left feeling really proud of my son. I really enjoy our lessons as each week we learn new skills through songs and games, which we keep building on. It’s a good feeling to know that we are learning keys skills, vital water safety and building water confidence, whilst having fun at the same time. Heat or Eat Hundreds of people across Stirlingshire struggle to afford to eat every week. In Winter this becomes even more of a challenge for many where they find themselves having to choose to heat or eat. The cost of Christmas puts a further strain on those already experiencing hardship. Mums Want More Flexible Working Opportunities According to a survey by Workingmums.co.uk, almost three quarters of working mums identify flexible work as being crucial to getting more women into senior roles. The survey shows that mums feel flexible working is vital for them to manage work and family life and that 60% of those who work flexibly would like even more flexibility. So what can individuals do to help persuade their employers to agree to them working flexibly?
Here are some tips:
• Think through what the job requires and whether the tasks you have to perform can be done at a different location i.e. from home, or at times outside of the standard working day. Take account of any additional costs or challenges this might involve and discuss them honestly. • Give examples of the ways in which your work can be successfully carried out under any new working pattern you are proposing, and show that it will not harm the business. Point out any business advantages. • Research some case studies, ideally in your sector that shows how the work pattern you are suggesting can be mutually beneficial to you and your employer. • If managers are dubious, suggest a trial period. • Have a compromise solution as a back-up.
