New schools start for your little Ninja’s With new schools and academic years starting school transition can be stressful for children and can result in temporary unsettled behavior. That’s because in general change pushes people outside of their comfort zone into unchartered territory and so behavior can be a little unsettled around now. In ancient times the young Samurai or Ninja would sometimes leave the comfort and protection of their family or school to undertake a journey visiting other schools to learn from new teachers and to test themselves against others skills. The Samurai called this the Musha shugyo which means “learning journey”. We can help do that for our children by teaching them some essential skills. Show children how to introduce them selves and hold themselves upright with confidence, it is incredibly valuable and is a first step in helping to prevent bullying.

raised a whopping £1448 for charities from the proceeds of ticket sales for their latest school production ‘The Magic Toy Shop’ and ‘Divertissements’. Over 120 children were involved, from 3 years to young adults. The children, in the guise of mice, poodles, fairy dolls, toy soldiers, mechanical and costume dolls, represented toys that come alive once the shop has closed for the night. Principal Victoria Arnett was very proud of the children. There were no signs of stagefright on the day, everyone just enjoyed the performance. This is a big event as we do not stage a show every year to give us enough time for exam preparation but it is valuable for giving the children stage experience. The money from ticket sales from the refreshments sold at the interval will be split between 2 charities, Stroke Association and the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

News Holiday on Ice returns to Brighton with new show PASSION

CALLING ALL YOUNG RECRUITS: Conquer it Together Challenge – The Canal Walk 2015! An 11 mile challenge that is set to be a really lovely day of fellow supporters walking along the Grand Union Canal, a great day out – all for a tremendous cause. Commando Series, a 6km obstacle challenge designed for both kids (aged 8+) and adults is a fun filled endurance test like no other. Coming to Hever Castle in Kent on Saturday 14th November for the first time ever, Commando Series gives kids (and adults) the opportunity to experience the mud, sweat and pain of real, modern day, commando training, taking on 15 obstacles over a “wild” terrain course. Don’t let the parents have all the fun at this fantastic obstacle event. The event is open to both adults and young recruits (children aged 8+) with the hard core event taking place in the morning and the family friendly event taking place in the afternoon. You decide just how tough you want to be treated though, with the option of selecting “just get me round”, “family friendly”, or “treat me like a commando” at online race entry stage. The Commando Series allows the public to experience elements of modern day commando training by using replicas of many of the Royal Marines Endurance, Assault and Tarzan courses (the official Commando tests). With a chance to discover if they have what it takes to be a real commando, each section of the wild, woodland course demands that each participant digs deep to become a Commando Series finisher. Each obstacle will challenge trainees to be the best they can be but will be, by no means, impossible or dangerous. On arrival ‘recruits’ will enter the event village resembling a military encampment where they will change and ‘cam up’. Recruits are then led into a holding pen for an old fashioned warm up conducted by legendry Motivator in Chief and ex-Royal Marines Physical Training Instructor, Bart, before getting official “orders’ to set off around the course. Conducted with a backdrop of Hever Castle, the historic estate and grounds was originally a medieval defensive castle, the scene is set for a true battle of wills.

Been there, done that! Nine mistakes that parents might make when they’re new to school life By Liat Hughes-Joshi

Mums and dads of older children share their top tips on what they would have told themselves to avoid any problems when they were new to the school run. Complaining to the teacher - based on what your child told you happened…only it didn’t… You take what your child has said as gospel, march into see the teacher, only to fall flat on your (red with embarrassment) face when you discover your little one has got completely the wrong end of the stick. Even the most switched on, truthful child can mishear or misunderstand sometimes. Stay open-minded and communicate to the teacher that you appreciate what you’ve been told might not be what actually occurred! Sweating the small stuff An interest in how your child is doing is healthy but getting overly-wrapped up with the minutiae of reading levels is less so. Who could tackle the hardest spellings at the age of five will not go on their CV, after all. As Emma, mum to Jamie, 12, and Lucy, 9, puts it “I realise now that who was sitting on which table or reading which books wasn’t anywhere near as important as I thought it was then. If your child is progressing and enjoying school, try not to worry.” Getting embroiled in school gate competitiveness Engaging with ‘Competitive Mum’ (there’s one in every class…) is a lose-lose situation. If your child is ahead of hers, she’ll hate you for it. If hers has one up on yours, you’ll end up inwardly fuming at her smugness. Do not participate in her FBI-style interrogations about whether your child has done grade 42 piano or is taking their platinum swimming badge yet.

Freaking out about friendship fall-outs Reception children switch friends quicker than you can ask ‘who’s your best buddy?’ It’s completely normal and bust-ups are quickly forgotten. Provide a shoulder to cry on and offer reassuring advice. You could also arrange playdates with other classmates to build bonds. Cath, recalls how daughter Ava, 7, fell out with her best friend: ‘I was ready to storm around to her house. Then I realised they change best friends every day. It wasn’t a big deal for her. “ Tackling other parents about problems between the children Some little horror has been merciless to your child and your protective instincts are kicking in. But do not head over to give the other mum what for. She could have a different version of events and you’re unlikely to change her mind about who said or did what to whom. There’s also scope for a parental fall-out that will endure long after the kids make up. Sangeeta, mum to Maya, 6, says: “there’s an element of ‘no news is good news’. If they’re struggling or misbehaving, the teacher will tell you. You get used to not knowing so much about what they do.”

! Expecting your child to be chatty and delighted to see you at 3pm Even little ones who were fine with full-time nursery can have the stuffing knocked out of them by starting school. With so much to learn, by home time many reception kids (and teachers!) are exhausted. Alison, mum of Jack, 7, advises: “I wanted to catch up with him but he used to be so grouchy. Lots of early nights helped, too. Oh, and always have a snack waiting for them – he still comes out starving every day”. Focusing on whether they know their letters before they start but not worrying about getting their coat or shoes on Ask a reception teacher what they would like their new charges to be able to do and it probably won’t be about letters or counting. What they would like is for your child to be able to dress and undress for PE, use the loo independently and maybe recognise their name on their coat peg and belongings. Not naming absolutely anything of use or importance! There’s a black hole in every primary school into which children’s belongings fall, never to be seen again. If you want to maximise chances of getting lost items back, add their name to everything. And be very wary when your child asks if they can take their favourite teddy/ toy into show the other children, as there’s a chance it will never be seen again. Too Much, Too Soon? Are we pushing our kids too far by signing them up to lots of clubs and classes - or offering valuable advantages?

Many parents are convinced their child is a musical genius – and they may be right – but pushing a child into playing an instrument can put them off for life! From seven years, a 30 or 45 minute class is plenty, with ten minutes of daily practice. This can increase slowly.

Fitness Fanatic

Sports and dance are great for fitness and flexibility and the chance to play with teams from other areas – though for younger kids, avoid classes that are too aggressive or pressurised. Be prepared for many hours spent track, field or pool-side if your child loves sports.

Most parents agree; kids need to be stimulated and to have plenty going on to stop them getting bored. Mums and dads are only too aware of the value of after-school clubs to ensure their children are well looked after and stimulated.

Mastermind

If one subject is a struggle, one-to-one tuition can pay dividends and if your child wants to study a particular subject later on, it can be invaluable.

But with a vast range on offer, it can be tempting to sign them up for a different activity every evening. Piano on Monday, gymnastics on Tuesday, maths on Wednesday – and so it goes on, with more over the weekend.

Mini Thespian

Kids thrive in acting and singing classes and may go on to theatre school. It builds confidence and the ability to express themselves.

Of course we might not all be able to offer our child such a packed schedule – finances alone might make this impossible – but there’s no doubt that a couple of well-chosen activities can be great for giving your child an insight into areas that the school curriculum can’t cover.

Alternatives

For every kind of child, there’s an activity to suit, so check the clubs and classes section of the Families website to see what’s near you. From archery to zoology, you’ll find something they love.

What age is best to start classes? Early years:

What do clubs and classes offer your child?

They get very tired so keep outside activities to a minimum. For excess energy, a good run in the park is great for letting off steam. An art, singing or baby ballet-type class with the emphasis on play would be great.

• A chance to mix with children from other schools and areas; this will widen your child’s social circle • A chance to take part in artistic, musical and sporting activities not offered at school • A potential career • Teamwork skills • Increases confidence and the ability to mix • The ability to develop persistence and patience.

Infant school:

Add a low-key activity to look forward to. Singing, music making, dancing, simple sports and swimming are all great choices for little ones.

Junior school:

But – play is important too !

As dreaded tests loom, add an educational class if your child is struggling with one subject. Extra maths or reading tuition can make all the difference to confidence.

Educational Psychologist Peter Gray wrote in the Independent that we should allow our children more time for playing. He believes that more time in the classroom and less at play can be detrimental, because kids miss out on life skills that can only be learned through play.

Senior school:

It’s easier to add activities as energy and independence increases. As more exams come up, be flexible about allowing them to miss or drop activities.

New rules have completely changed the way parents can take time off after having a baby By Judy Yorke

New rules have completely changed the way parents can take time off after having a baby. Shared Parental Leave regulations give eligible parents across the UK flexibility to juggle childcare between them. After a compulsory two weeks off for the mother, parents can share up to 50 weeks of leave in the baby’s first year (or the first year of adoption). The law applies to same sex couples and those bringing up a child together, even if it’s from a previous relationship. How you split the leave is up to you. It will depend on who earns more, who feels their career will be least affected by taking time off, and who wants to be at home.

Significantly, for the first time, dads can take all or most of the year off while mums return to work. The leave can be taken in blocks (up to three each) so you can alternate time off if one of you has a particularly busy time at work before resuming parental leave. Finances will play an important part in the decision. While you can share up to 50 weeks, only 37 are paid. You will receive £139.58 per week or 90% of your average weekly earnings, whichever is lower. See more on

Halloween Feature Costumes and Masks Halloween is all about becoming someone – or something – else. Whilst there’s a huge range of costumes for sale these days, it’s fairly simple to create the same effect at home with a few swathes of material and a little imagination. Adrienne D’Souza from A Party Palace in East Sheen www.apartypalace.co.uk tells us how to make some Halloween costumes

Mummy

Much fun and great effect can be created from wrapping up your child as a mummy – as long as you are prepared to let them wrap you up too!

Instructions

Cut up an unwanted white sheet or use any old white material or bandages that are lying around. Get wrapping! For extra effect, tea stain material or dab with black poster paint Put on white, cream or light grey leggings/tights and a white, cream or light grey top. Paint your mummy with white or light grey around the face and a darker colour, like black or dark grey around the eyes. (Always spot-test skin a day or two before). To add authenticity, attach plastic spiders, insects and rats to the costume or drape some fake cobweb over it once complete.

Homemade cat costumes are fairly straightforward to create and both boys and girls tend to love becoming cats .

Monster Mask Instructions

Draw the shape of a monster’s face onto cardboard and cut out Measure up the eyes of the person who’s going to wear the masks and cut eye holes in the cardboard Scrunch up newspaper balls in varying sizes to create monster warts and extra eyes Glue them into place on your mask Use blends of green paint to create a swamp monster look. Once dry, add “hairs” to the wart (try a bit of broom bristle) and veins to the eyes / dripping blood if desired. Secure some elastic from the edges of the mask using a stapler or glue gun or by punching a hole on either side of the cardboard and threading through some string/elastic Put on your mask and get out there to scare people!

Littlehampton Bonfire Night Celebrations

Starting at around 6.30pm, there will be torch-lit processions with visiting bonfire societies, with floats a carnival and marching bands this event is very family friendly. The evening ends in a huge bonfire and spectacular fireworks display on the seafront. For more information of a breakdown of timings of events being held throughout the afternoon and evening you can buy a programme from many of the local shops in Littlehampton. The firework event is FREE.

Lewes Bonfire Night Celebrations

Although this is not really suitable for young children, The Lewes Bonfire Night Celebrations are the largest and only proper bonfire celebration left in the UK. It starts around 5.00 pm and continues through to about 1 am. With several bonfire societies involved they all have their own celebration, processions, bonfires, tabs, set pieces, effigies and firework displays in various parts of the town. The centre of town is definitely not suitable for young children especially those in prams or pushchairs. For further details visit:

Worthing Bonfire Night Celebrations and Tide of Light

Starting with a free lantern making session at 3.30 – 5.30pm at the Pavillion Theatre – you do need to book a space, ready for a tide of light walk along the promenade. Fireworks start at the end of the Pier at 8pm and the town centre will have street food stalls, live music and fairground rides until 10.30pm. The firework display is FREE. Shoreham Bonfire Night Celebrations

Starting at 5.45 you can collect your free balloon for the balloon procession at 6.30pm featuring the Beach Bateria Samba Band. A huge bonfire on the beach will be lit at 7pm followed but a professional fireworks display around 7-7.15pm. Hove Family Firework Spectacular

Starting at 5pm at Neville Road in Hove opposite the Greyhound Stadium. This is a truly spectacular firework display designed to be suitable for everyone, especially families with children. An event that is suitable for everyone, including families with small children who don’t want to stand around for a long time waiting in the dark. The displays are early in the evening, starting at 7.00pm. Food stalls will be open all evening, and glow sticks and flashing toys will be on sale at stalls inside the grounds.
