Fontwell Park’s Big Bank Holiday Family Fun Raceday is set to be great fun for the whole family. Children will be thrilled by the personal appearances on the raceday of Peppa Pig and George, who will be on hand throughout the day to entertain and jump in any unsuspecting muddy puddles! The racecourse is providing plenty of children’s entertainment (for when Peppa and George need a rest) including a fabulous fun fair, bouncy castles and face painting. All of the children’s entertainment is free of charge and starts at 12.30pm, so children can literally have hours of fun. Tiny Soccerstars

Fiona and Marianne own and run sessions for Tiny Soccerstars in Sussex and have been working in this field for over 6 years. Providing private sessions, pre-school/nursery sessions, holiday clubs and after school key stage 1 clubs. For a family adventure further afield, the Alps must be one of the best kept secrets in travel. Francesca and Paul Eyre have been operating mountain activity holidays at Chilly Powder, near Morzine, since 1995: skiing by winter and a whole range of activities on offer during the summer months. Their catered chalet service and three self-catered chalets provide families with a range of sports and a high level of care. Choosing the right Nursery for your child Listen to the voice inside your head It’s one of the most important decisions you’ve made for your child in his or her life so far. So which nursery is the right one – and how do you know? Joanna Moorhead shares some tips

Nurseries come in all shapes and sizes. Big ones, small ones; some are run by the local council, others by independent companies. There are nurseries attached to schools, and there are stand-alone nurseries. The choice can feel daunting. But here’s the first, the most important, and possibly even the only thing you need to know about how to make your choice.

....heed your instinct about what’s right for your child, and you’ll almost certainly make the ‘correct’ choice. Because the truth, of course, is that there isn’t a ‘right’ nursery or a ‘wrong’ one; there is, however, a nursery that will suit your child best, because it will mesh in with your own and your partner’s ideas about how to raise a child, and what matters most in his or her life. All of which is why what you feel inside you about a nursery will give you the biggest guide as to what to go on. To kick the process off, you’ll need to put together a list of nurseries in your area (or perhaps in the area where you work, if you’re thinking your child can be cared for at nursery while you work nearby).

Comb through the nurseries in your area online ; look at the Ofsted

reports for any you think sound promising. Think about what factors matter most to you in a nursery (see our checklist) and then make appointments to look around a selection of those that have, or might have, vacancies. When you look round, don’t be too anxious about all the questions you need to ask or whether you’re going to miss something vitalthere is always time to ask questions later, or even another day. Instead, switch on all your ‘vibes’ and take in the holistic sense of the place. Does it feel friendly, and welcoming, and a fun place to be, from what you can see of it? Do staff treat you warmly – are you convinced by what they’re telling you? Do you, in a nutshell, feel a sense of confidence about the place; would you feel confident about leaving the most important person in your life, your child, here in the care of the people you’ve met? If the answer is yes, the nursery you’ve just seen is a possible one for you; if you have any doubts whatsoever about this most crucial thing, whether you’re confident about leaving your child there, cross it off your list at once.

Your nursery checklist

What are the most important things you’re looking for in a nursery? Here are some things you may want to think about:

1. Food

How important is it to you that food is organic? Is the food prepared fresh onsite by dedicated staff?

2. Outdoor play space

This varies hugely from nursery to nursery. Think about how important outdoor play is to your child, and decide how much importance you’re going to attach to whether the nursery has a garden, how big it is, and how many activities take place in it.

3. What are the qualifications of the staff? Does management promote professional development?

4. Are there any special classes/ experiences offered ?

On which days (and do they cost extra?)? E.g. French, music, dance

5. How do staff communicate with you? On a daily basis - about your child’s day, and longer term about their development?

May Day Festival at Hever Castle Wild Wood Weekend, May 2nd - 4th Wakehurst, Ardingly Celebrate May Day at historic Hever Castle & Gardens over the early May Bank Holiday. The May Day Festival runs from May 2nd – 4th with a host of customs and activities for all the family to enjoy.

Join the Lord and Lady of the May on the Castle forecourt and see the crowning of the May Queen. Visitors are invited to dance around the Maypole with brightly coloured ribbons intertwined. This age old custom is followed by demonstrations of May Day Dancing accompanied by 16th century music. Meet the mythical Jack-in-the-Green and follow the Green Man from folklore in a customary May Day procession through the gardens as he wakes up the plants for summer with the help of children and their magical May bells. Children can also follow a Green Man trail through the Castle to find out more about his origins. With the days getting warmer, adventurous children can risk a soaking as they navigate the Water Maze while more fun awaits at the Adventure Playground. Boats are for hire from the Edwardian boathouse and the African Queen steam boat makes a welcome return. To round off the day, head for the award-winning restaurants where delicious lunches and afternoon teas will be served. Or bring a picnic to eat in the designated picnic spots - the perfect way to celebrate the coming of summer.

Saturday 23, Sunday 24 and Monday 25 May, 2015 10am – 5pm A weekend of wild woodland activities for all the family to celebrate the opening of Wakehurst’s Pearson’s Wood.

The weekend will feature a wide range of woodland craftsman and green woodworkers demonstrating the many uses of the woodland’s natural materials. Families can also enjoy a taste of bushcraft and drop in for children’s woodland craft activities such as den-building and cooking damper bread over the camp fire. Throughout the weekend there will be tree top acrobatics, story-telling and music to bring the woods to life. There will also be specially created areas for families to relax together and enjoy the woodland setting with a picnic area and camp side barbecue. Other highlights include displays by woodland birds of prey and working horses. Following the event Pearcelands Wood will remain open all through the summer. Party Problems - SOLVED !!! Planning a party? Need some advice? Sarah Butters takes a look at the very latest party problems posed by parents and gives you some top tips on avoiding serving a can of worms at your child’s next celebration.

CAN YOU….say no to siblings?

CAN YOU...exclude individual children? This is a tough one because as a general rule, you should stick to one of 3 party invite rules.

1 Invite the whole class – this is perfect for Reception age children

Most of us wouldn’t dream of turning up to a party uninvited. Yet some parents feel it acceptable to bring along a string of siblings and presume they too are welcome.

Invite all the girls or all the boys – this becomes popular as children head into KS2 and the opposite sex become toxic

Invite a few close friends – this works when you’re keeping the budget down or as you head towards the end of primary school.

There is little more irritating than the parent who confirms their child will be joining the party, only for them to leave an empty chair at the birthday table. The tale of the mum who billed a parent after they failed to show up to her son’s skiing party certainly made party no shows THE talk of the playground. “Was she right to have sent

the invoice? “ The reality is there will always be ill mannered individuals who choose to accept an invite, and go on to make other plans without letting you know. In a world of text messages and emails, a no warning no show is simply unacceptable. But it’s also inevitable at some point in your party throwing life. Invoicing a parent may make the headlines and also make you feel better for a while, but it’s likely to alienate your child and make YOU the subject of ridicule at the school gates. Our advice is to make a point of asking what happened to those no show when you next bump into the parent. ..and Good Luck !
