The end is nigh…
W
ell Families fans and loyal readers. It is with great emotion that I write my last editorial for Families Fife magazine. We’ve been through a lot together, the Christmas pantos, the Highland Games and Galas, the sports camps, the dance camps and the outdoor activity weeks; why even the Olympics, the Scottish Referendum and a General election. But alas for me, it is time to move on. Such is the beauty of a franchise operation however, that Families Fife magazine may live on without me. At the time or writing, the brave individual who craves the challenge of producing a bimonthly mag, with no time, little funds and an ageing Apple Mac, is yet to appear... Perhaps I should employ a team of P7s to produce Families Fife – it does admittedly seem less of a challenge than the average Primary 3 class homework task? So for now, I leave you as ever at this time of year, looking forward with a mix of trepidation and excitement to the six weeks of summer holidays to come. Will the weather it be terrific or treacherous? Who knows? But the one thing we do know is that there’s loads on, and no time to let the grass grow under your feet. The Wee Jaunt Aberdeen ride, now in its third year, offers a fantastic traffic free loop route route right through the heart of Aberdeen, starting and finishing at the picturesque Duthie Park. he Edinburgh International Book Festival believes that books and storytelling play a crucial role in the lives of children, opening up opportunities and creating worlds that give children a thirst for life. Charlotte Square Gardens, a family-friendly space in the heart of Edinburgh, will come alive this August with over 200 events in the Baillie Gifford Children’s Programme featuring authors such as Catherine Rayner, Julia Donaldson, Eoin Colfer, Frank Cottrell Boyce, Jacqueline Wilson and Francesca Simon as well as the best writers for young adults including Matt Haig, Marcus Sedgwick, Sally Gardner and David Levithan. With readings, workshops, debates and discussions featuring stories, pictures, and real life adventure, the Book Festival feeds the imagination of children of all ages from toddlers to young adults. There are daily free readings, storytelling, bookshops, cafes and a range of fun activities in the Baillie Gifford Story Box – just drop by and get stuck in. Dinosaurs Return!

inosaurs Return! is a seven-month long dinosaur exhibit at RZSS Edinburgh Zoo, running until 1 November 2015. The attraction features 14 life-size animatronic dinosaurs who all move and make realistic dinosaur calls. The exhibition is a wonderful experience for both adults and children alike, with plenty to keep the children entertained, with a dinosaur detective trail and a dinosaur fossil dig.

reat news for families across the region - Fife Sports and Leisure Trust is making free summer swimming available with its Splash-Out-for-Nowt offer, and, for extra active fun, its ever-popular Quid-a-Kid racquet sports promotion is back for the summer school holidays. The Fife Sports and Leisure Trust summer promotions, as well as its varied children’s summer programme of activities, are available from the 6 July until 18 August for juniors aged 17 and under. The Trust’s leisure centres across the region have a fun-packed summer programme to keep children and young people active over the school holidays. Visit www.fifeleisure. org and click on each leisure centre to find out what’s on offer – there’s everything from football coaching, rookie lifeguard courses, inflatable fun sessions, as well as multi-activity sports, athletics and gymnastics camps. ÊThe Ê Great Tapestry of Scotland Exhibition 28 June onwards Initiated by author Alexander McCall Smith, artist Andrew Crummy and historian Alistair Moffat, this remarkable exhibition is one of the biggest community arts projects in the world. Consisting of 160 panels and running more than 140 metres in length, the Tapestry brings the history of Scotland to life in vibrant colour, from the ice age to the 21st century.Taking more than 1000 talented volunteers over 55,000 hours to complete, this project saw the translation of Crummy’s descriptive artwork into a rich, skilful and textural depiction of Scottish history – using over 300 miles of woollen yarn! ÊÊCatch the Monster Creepy Crawlies at Deep Sea World Deep Sea World, Scotland’s national aquarium, is set to be overrun with giant creepy crawlies as part of a major new feature which opens later this month. The extraordinarily life like animatronic creatures, including a human-sized snail and duelling scorpions as big as cars, are the stars of ‘Monster Creepy Crawlies’ which opens at the North Queensferry attraction on Saturday, June 27th. The giant moving figures are part of a series of detailed dioramas featuring everything from an enormous cricket ball to chair-sized drawing pins. The bugs bring with them a series of fun interactive tasks and challenges alongside microscopes to view actual insects close up. In the words of Deep Sea World’s Kerry Myers “One thing’s for sure, you’ll never look at a fly or a snail in quite the same way again!”

This is a one day event on Saturday 1 August 2015 and will be based in Kirkcaldy with activities in Kirkcaldy Galleries, Memorial Gardens, Adam Smith Theatre, The Arts Hub in the Postings and the Community Space in the Mercat. The Baby Friendly Initiative is a worldwide programme of the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, which aims to improve standards of care for breastfeeding within healthcare settings and help build strong parent and child relationships.’ ÊÊ STOP PRESS All expectant mums at around 22 weeks into their pregnancy, are now being given the latest version of ‘Off to A Good Start’. This has been updated and links with the ‘Ready Steady Baby Book’. It is an excellent resource for mothers but also good for those who are supporting mums to update themselves on current baby care.’
