Wallace Monument - Braveheart 2015
Thursday 3rd – Monday 7th September On the 3rd September 1995 Stirling hosted the European premier of a film which combined action, intrigue and romance to tell the story of William Wallace, his courage and his passion. The 20th anniversary of Braveheart will be marked with a programme of special events at The National Wallace Monument – make sure you’re part of the action! There will be special live performances by costumed actors, recreating scenes from the movie, weapons demonstrations, archery activities, face painting and costumes for children, Braveheart souvenirs and gifts, Braveheart anniversary competitions and anniversary screenings of Braveheart at the Macrobert Arts Centre (University of Stirling). International FASD Awareness Day – 9th September On 9th September each year, communities around the world take time to think about spending nine months of pregnancy free from alcohol. Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) refers to a range of permanent and irreversible birth defects caused by maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy. These defects can include physical and intellectual disabilities, as well as problems with behaviour and learning. FASD is the leading known preventable cause of learning disability worldwide. Avoiding alcohol during pregnancy and when trying to conceive is the recommended way to be sure that the baby will not be affected by FASD. Padel Tennis at Bridge of Allan Sports Club A court for the World’s fastest growing racket sport, Padel Tennis, has been built at Bridge of Allan Sports Club. Played on a court about half the size of a tennis court with glass walls at the back and sides, Padel is basically, a cross between tennis and squash. It is played mainly in Spain and South America but is now gaining ground in the UK. Typically played as doubles, scoring is the same as tennis. Players use small carbon fibre bats rather than the normal strung rackets. Padel is great for introducing younger people to racket sports and also offers the opportunity for veteran players to continue racket sport participation at the end of their squash or tennis careers. Mums and dads are only too aware of the value of after-school clubs to ensure their children are well looked after and stimulated. But with a vast range on offer, it can be tempting to sign them up for a different activity every evening. Of course we might not all be able to offer our child such a packed schedule – finances alone might make this impossible – but there’s no doubt that a couple of well-chosen activities can be great for giving your child an insight into areas that the school curriculum can’t cover.
What age is best to start classes?
Early years: They get very tired so keep outside activities to a minimum. A good run in the park lets off steam. An art, singing, baby massage or toddler yoga class with the emphasis on play and bonding is great. Primary School: Singing, music, dancing, sports and creative classes are great. In addition extra tuition for your child can be helpful at this stage. High School: It’s easier to add more activities as energy and independence increases and educational classes if your child is struggling with one subject.

Many parents are convinced their child is a musical genius – and they may be right – but pushing a child into playing an instrument can put them off for life! From seven years, a 30 or 45 minute class is plenty, with ten minutes of daily practice. This can increase slowly. Fitness Fanatic Sports and dance are great for fitness and flexibility and the chance to play with teams from other areas – though for younger kids, avoid classes that are too aggressive or pressurised. Be prepared for many hours spent track, field or pool-side if your child loves sports.

He believes that more time in the classroom and less at play can be detrimental, because kids miss out on life skills that can only be learned through play. “Judgement, wisdom and creative ability …come from life experiences,” he says. “For children, those experiences are embedded in play.”

Favourite park Kings Park in Stirling is my favourite park as it has great facilities - a skate park , toddlers park, junior park, putting in the summer and a huge field to play football and have picnics. It has a fantastic view of the castle and the tennis courts are great fun too. In the summer there is usually a kiosk open for much needed drinks and ice-cream and there is often an ice-cream van at the other end. They’ve even added a kid’s outdoor play gym now which the little ones love.
Why you like living where you do I like living in Tullibody as we have a lovely view of the Ochils, the people are friendly and we have lots of beautiful countryside around us. We are just up the road from Stirling and not too far from Falkirk for any shopping plus we can jump on the train at Alloa or Stirling to get to Edinburgh or Glasgow really easily.

The estate where I live has lots of little parks for the kids and has a community centre for exercise classes and clubs. There is a thriving Tullibody football club my youngest son goes to and my eldest belongs to the Alloa Wasps football club. The local high school Lornshill provides excellent sport facilities for the community as does the Alloa Leisure Bowl and we use facilities at The Peak in Stirling too.
Favourite child friendly restaurant Frankie and Benny’s, good value good atmosphere.
Favourite shop Tillicoultry Sterling Mills outlet stores are one of my favourite places to shop as it has sports shops, The Works, a home bargains and a lovely Thorntons chocolate shop. The Sterling Furniture store is really nice for a wander around looking at the artwork and furniture and a quick cup of tea, their café is great. When the boys were younger it was a great place for a coffee and a chat while they played in the little play corner and it is still used by many families for this.
Favourite day out The safari park at Blair Drummond is good for a full day-out with lots of things to do and see for the kids
