s an editor, I get to see a lot of Press releases, most of which I choose not to share with readers for the sake of your own sanity. However one which popped into my inbox recently – in October from the Halifax did catch my eye. It purported that the cost of raising a child to the age of 11 was over £83,627. Well, I laughed at this ludicrous figure exclaiming loudly (to myself I add) ‘who could afford that?’ Then I studied the breakdowns. In the 2014 actual monthly cost column were figures that actually did seem to add up. Food - £77.41 per month, that’s under £20 a week. Well that barely covers my kid’s cereal and snack bill. Holidays £59.17 – averaged over a year then probably also a conservative figure for us…Toys, £23.42 …does this include that silly season coming up I wondered? Leisure and hobbies, £39.23? I am now thinking of all those swimming levels and Brownie fees and Spanish lessons [ha worth every Euro!] So what is my point? Yes, children are fantastic and they are the greatest wealth as my husband tells me the Japanese say. They are also undoubtedly our greatest expense… And never more so than in the season to come. As always and even more than ever, there’s tonnes to do round these parts. Partake, indulge and enjoy because if you don’t, you know exactly where that cash is going. Have a cool Yule when it comes! 

Be prepared for winter this year O

ver the winter holiday period, GP surgeries can be closed for a total of four days. They also close for various bank holidays throughout the year. If you find yourself unprepared when the GP surgery is closed, do you know that your local community pharmacy can help? There are a few things you can do to be prepared: ÊÊ If you take repeat medication, make sure you have plenty to cover holiday periods. ÊÊ If you run out of medicine seek advice from a pharmacist first, if possible. ÊCommunity Ê pharmacies can help over weekends and public holidays when GP surgeries can be closed. ÊÊ Ask your pharmacist for health advice on a range of treatments. ÊÊ Visit www.nhs24.com or www.nhs. inform.co.uk for self-care health advice, local health services, emergency dental information and pharmacy opening times.

ÊÊ Call NHS Inform on 0800 22 44 88 Only call NHS 24 out-of-hours services (111) if you can’t wait until your GP practice re-opens. Community pharmacies can advise on routine and minor ailments and offer advice or recommend an appropriate treatment without the need for a doctor’s appointment. This is called the Minor Ailment Service, an NHS service for people, including children, who don’t pay prescription charges. It will save you making an appointment with your GP simply to get a prescription. You register for the service with the community pharmacy of your choice. You don’t have to make an appointment, and your consultation will always be with a qualified Pharmacist. NHS 24 is an online and out-of-hours phone service which provides access to health advice and information 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

NHS 24 phone service (111) NHS 24 operates an outof-hours phone service providing help if your GP surgery is closed and you are too ill to wait until it re-opens. During the call you will be asked about your location and your reason for contacting the service. This will be used to direct your call to a suitable health professional who will talk to you about your symptoms and tell you what care they think you need. They might suggest that you treat yourself at home, that you see a doctor or another health professional or, in some cases, they might call an ambulance for you. You can contact the NHS 24 phone service on 111. We all like to be prepared, but when taken unawares, it’s reassuring to know that community pharmacies can help!  If you would like further information about the services offered by your local community pharmacy, you can contact the pharmacy directly or NHS Inform on 0800 22 44 88 (calls are free).

Shop locally this Christmas and give more than just presents...

hristmas is upon us once again, and unless you are amazingly prepared and have bought all your presents already, in which case, I am jealous of you to the point of resentment… there’s shopping to be done! The big retailers have been bombarding us for weeks, and you can rarely walk down the street or switch on the television without seeing adverts for this year’s Christmas must-haves. But what about the small, local, independent retailers? The businesses which are owned and run by local residents, often parents who are trying to feed, clothe and support their own families. Like Families Fife mag by way of example! Small businesses easily get ‘lost’ in the hubbub of Christmas, when really it’s a time of the year when we should be using them just as much, if not more, than usual. Yes, the large supermarkets and online retailers can offer price savings, because they are big and they have bulk-buying power. But they don’t offer low prices to save you money; they offer them to make

more profit for themselves, by offering loss leaders, or by negotiating lower prices from their suppliers, who then haggle with the manufacturers, who end up making smaller profits themselves, and sometimes even selling at a loss. But what about the things that the big businesses don’t offer? These are the things that small businesses generally excel at providing – handmade goods and locally produced items, in-depth product knowledge and personalised advice, customer service, a friendly and enjoyable shopping experience. You may not get the lowest prices, but you do get excellent value for money. Added to all of this, when you buy local you are making an important contribution to your local economy. Spending money with local businesses causes a ripple-effect, as those businesses in turn spend locally. Various research has been undertaken, with varying results, but one figure suggests that for every £10 spent in a local shop, between £16 and £50 goes back into the local economy, helping to improve local prosperity and create jobs. Now in it’s second year, the chocolateers are back to give you a magical Christmas shopping experience. ÊA Êmore enjoyable shopping experience Local business owners frequently like to take the time to chat and get to know their customers, which makes for a far nicer experience. I still recall living in West Hampstead in London and being particularly delighted with all my local purchases, nicely wrapped in tissue and brown paper bags with little ‘extras’ thrown in, like a chocolate coin – a far cry from Oxford Circus and mountains of plastic bags. ÊStronger Ê community ties – shopping locally helps to create town centres which are more sustainable and vibrant, meaning people feel part of the community. Local businesses are also often more willing than larger chains are to support local causes that have more meaning to them, and the area in which they live and work.
