The Kelpies
Falkirk’s new tourism icons, The Kelpies, are again to be the focus of attention over the coming months with key events at home and in the USA. Scale models of Andy Scott’s creations are to be showcased in one of New York’s highest profile public spaces – Bryant Park – during March and April, while the ‘real’ thing will be the centrepiece of Scotland’s John Muir Festival celebrations around the Easter weekend. Both projects will add to the already strong worldwide reputation of the sculptures and from April 21st Kelpies tours are being offered by the team at the Falkirk Community Trust. Work also continues at pace on site to have the landscape around the structures completed ahead of their ‘international launch’ on April 17th and 18th. The Sauchieburn Estate is home of the Bannockburn group of Horse Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) incorporating carriage driving. RDA are hosting a fundraising ceilidh on 14th March at the Albert Halls, Stirling. Our aim is to provide activities for people with disabilities in an inclusive, safe and supportive environment. To provide this service we depend on a committed group of staff and volunteers, ongoing fundraising and donations to subsidise the cost of lessons. Hippodrome Festival of Silent Cinema 12th – 16th March The Hippodrome Festival of Silent Cinema returns for its fourth year at the beautiful 102-year-old Hippodrome Bo’ness and offers an extraordinary cinema experience for all the family. Classic films, and overlooked treasures are accompanied with live music from a talented line-up of world-class musicians including a welcome return for broadcaster and pianist Neil Brand who will provide expert improvisation for the Saturday morning triple bill. Local secondary school students have been specially commissioned to score work for Scottish Screen Archive films, which they will debut on Sunday 16th March. Take a clean jeely (jam) jar and lid to get 2-for-1 entry to an uproarious trio of films featuring Buster Keaton and friends on Saturday 15th with fun family audience participation before the films start. Of course we recommend treating yourselves to a professional shoot once in a while to capture your kids and family in a way only a professional can. But as well as that Lighthouse Studios have come up with a few tips for getting images that will help record the story of your precious, tantrumming and at times tiring, little ones’ lives. • With very young babies (under 3 weeks old is best for a newborn shoot), patience can be the name of the game; so give yourself and baby plenty of time and don’t worry if you don’t get the images you want straight away. • With babies - Get close ups and photograph those tiny hands and wrinkled feet, and don’t forget the cute sleeping shots. • With older children - Photograph them doing activities (arts and sports) rather than always looking at the camera and always record their key moments like first day at nursery, first solid foods. • Pick the best time, after sleeps and snacks always good. • Indoors try to use natural light from windows rather than flash. • Outdoors always pay attention to the background – we’ve all seen photos with lamp posts coming out of heads. • Never, ever ask them to say cheese – it just looks fake! • Make sure you’re not always behind the lens so your kids have a record of you when they look back. 1. Wallace Monument to reopen on 5th April with a new view for visitors to Stirling’s famous landmark A complete refurbishment of Stirling’s National Wallace Monument, will see the opening of new exhibition areas this Spring: • The Hall of Arms on the first floor will tell the story of The Battle of Stirling Bridge, with William Wallace and Andrew de Moray discussing Scotland’s victory in a new film. • The Hall of Heroes will focus on Wallace’s life – with his legendary broadsword at the centre of this gallery, surrounded by the busts of Scottish heroes from Robert the Bruce to Robert Burns. • Younger visitors can have a go at building their own monument in the third floor gallery, where facts and figures behind the building of the Monument are revealed. • The life and legacy of Scotland’s National Hero is featured in new displays. • The Monument is scheduled to re-open on 5th April 2014, and you can keep in touch with the refurbishment project at: facebook. com/NationalWallaceMonument 2. 8. Easter at Callendar House Come along to Callendar House during the Easter holidays. From tasty treats in the Georgian kitchen to arts and crafts for kids there is something for the whole family. From 7th to 21st April 2-4pm, you will be able to sample, simnel cake, hot cross buns and hot chocolate with a special slow roast leg of lamb on Saturday 19th April. 9. Falkirk’s annual Pirates and Princesses Parade Saturday 12th April Falkirk’s annual Pirates & Princesses parade will be back in town. Captain Barbarossa and the crew will be meeting hopeful crew members on the High Street from 1.30pm. Visit the craft area at the steeple between 1-3pm for face-painting, hat making and mini makeovers. The parade starts from the bandstand area at 3.30pm followed by some pirate capers. All Pirates & Princesses, young and old, are invited to dress up and enjoy the fun. Also Saturday 12th April Pirate Treasure Hunt in Falkirk Town Centre commencing 1.30pm and 2.15pm. Visit the registration point at the steeple area to join in. Follow the clues with the Pirate gang to find Captain Barbossa’s treasure then share the bounty before he realises it’s gone! t’s one of the most important decisions you’ve made for your child in his or her life so far. So which nursery is the right one – and how do you know? Joanna Moorhead shares some tips
There are all sorts of different nurseries out there. Big ones, small ones; ones run by the local council, and ones run by independent companies. There are nurseries attached to primary schools, and there are stand-alone nurseries. When you start out looking for one, the plethora of what’s out there can make it all seem very daunting. But here’s the first, the most important, and possibly even the only thing you need to know about how to make your choice. Listen to the voice inside your head, heed your instinct about what’s right for your child, and you’ll almost certainly make the ‘correct’ choice. Because the truth, of course, is that there isn’t a ‘right’ nursery or a ‘wrong’ one; there is, however, a nursery that will suit your child best, because it will mesh in with your own and your partner’s ideas about how to raise a child, and what matters most in his or her life. All of which is why what you feel inside you about a nursery will give you the biggest guide as to what to go on.
holistic sense of the place. Does it feel friendly, and welcoming, and a fun place to be, from what you can see of it? Do staff treat you warmly – are you convinced by what they’re telling you? Do you, in a nutshell, feel a sense of confidence about the place; would you feel confident about leaving the most important person in your life, your child, here in the care of the people you’ve met? If the answer is yes, the nursery you’ve just seen is a possible one for you; if you have any doubts whatsoever about this most crucial thing, whether you’re confident about leaving your baby there, cross it off your list at once.
Your nursery checklist
What are the most important things you’re looking for in a nursery? Here are some things you need to think about: •

Looking round
To kick the process off, you’ll need to put together a list of nurseries in your area (or perhaps in the area where you work, if you’re thinking your child can be cared for at nursery while you work nearby). Comb through the nurseries in your area online; look at the Ofsted reports for any you think sound promising. Think about what factors matter most to you in a nursery (see our checklist) and then make appointments to look around a selection of those that have, or might have, vacancies. When you look round, don’t be too anxious about all the questions you need to ask or whether you’re going to miss something vital. Instead, switch on all your ‘vibes’ and take in the

Food: How important is it to you that food is organic or home cooked on the premises? Do you like the idea of nursery children eating alongside staff – ie, the family model –which some nurseries practice? Outdoor play space: This varies hugely from nursery to nursery. Think about how important outdoor play is to your child, and decide how much importance you’re going to attach to whether the nursery has a garden, how big it is, and how many activities take place in it Drop off/pick up times: Most nurseries offer care from 8 in the morning to 6 in the evening. However some are now offering availability from 7.30 am until 6,30pm. How important is the flexibility of these times to your working day? Near home or near work: Location can be an important factor in choosing a nursery, Do you want a nursery near your work where you can be nearer you child during the day, or is it better for the nursery to be nearer home so pick up and drop off can be shared by both parents or other members of the family.

Why do you like living where you do? It is a beautiful part of the countryside with plenty of fresh air and open space for the children to run around in. We live on a farm which is great fun for the children they both help in the business and are often to be found selling ice lollies during their summer holidays. We also live next door to Blairdrummond Estate which has fantastic walks along the River Teith and quiet roads to cycle around. Favourite shop Fat Face, I love the quality and style of the children’s clothes (so does my daughter!). Favourite park Kings Park in Stirling. It has a variety of play equipment and lovely surroundings with open space for my son to run around.

The coaches are fantastic and put a lot of effort into coaching the kids and we enjoy watching him play in matches all over the country. My daughter enjoys playing the Fiddle at McLaren High School where Musicworks provide free lessons for interested children, we found out about this through our local school.

how to have a proper holiday when you are parents
verything changes when you have children, and nothing more than your annual holiday. But there are still ways to feel as though you’ve had a break, says mother-offour Joanna Moorhead
It’s still got the same name, but once you’ve got children your fortnight in the sun isn’t really a holiday any more. Not a holiday as you once knew it, anyway. Gone are the days when you could laze around a pool all day, with no bigger decision than how early in the day to have your first beer; gone, too, the days when you could party through the night and stay in bed until 11am if you wanted. No: once you have kids, what a holiday actually means is more work than usual, with a different backdrop. Why more? Well, there are new hazards to negotiate, especially if your children are tiny (windows they could fall out of, swimming pools they could fall into, the need to be on constant watch for different dangers). And, unlike at home, you don’t have your usual safety nets in place to make things easier: no childminder, no friends round the corner, no teenage babysitter down the street, no playgroup. What’s a time-starved couple, who still like the idea that a holiday might deliver them some time together a deux, some time alone to ruminate and read, and the occasional opportunity to try out water sports or the spa, to do? The good news is, there are ways round the difficulties. The caveat is, none of them are problemfree. Solution number one: Take the grandparents The pros: They’re free! Grandparents pay their own way on holiday (well, most do) – and some are even going to treat you quite a bit while you’re away. I’m joking, of course: grandparents are a cost-cutting way of making your holiday more like a holiday; but the main advantage of them is they genuinely love your children, and they’re going to enjoy being with them, and vice versa. The cons: Not everyone has a great relationship with their parents or parents-in-law. A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself whether you’d have holidayed with them before you had kids. If the answer is absolutely not, maybe think again. Solution number two: Have a shared holiday with another family The pros: You can’t get out as much once you’ve got kids, so taking friends means you’ve got built-in entertainment. If you’re
self-catering, you’ll find you can get a better deal on a luxurious big property – your money goes further, in other words. And, of course, the big advantage is that your kids will have friends too. The cons: You thought you knew your friends but believe me – you’re going to know them a whole lot better once you’ve holidayed with them. And you might not like everything about them. In fact you’re almost guaranteed to have the odd quibble – and maybe an all-out row (especially over children and how you deal with them). Are you sure your friendship can stand it? Solution number three: Go somewhere with a kids’ club The pros: The kids are happy, active, well supervised and it is age specific, whilst parents can spend a bit of time exploring or relaxing without kids complaining of being bored! The clubs tend to be for ½ or full days and kids often make new friends. The cons: Kids clubs are not for everyone. Kids need to feel comfortable to enter into a new situation and this can be hard if they don’t know anyone else there. It is an additional cost to the holiday so research different options before you go.
