Music Monsters –pre-school music classes

PLUS pre-school groups

PLUS works across Forth Valley, providing children and young people with additional support needs the opportunity to spend time with their peers. This also gives parents and carers some time for themselves. PLUS has been delivering these services for 25 years and continues to grow and develop. Two preschool projects have spaces available. • Opportunity PLUS is a weekly 2 hour play session for children aged 3-5 on Wednesday supported by trained staff, allowing parents/carers a short break. • Play and Chat @ PLUS was initiated by parents, keen to attend a weekly Parent and Toddler (bump to 5) group specifically for families who

have a child with additional support needs. Siblings are welcome to attend this group. Play and Chat run weekly, but alternate between a Monday morning (every fortnight) and a Thursday afternoon (every fortnight) - to fit in with families whose children might be in nursery am/pm or parents who work part time. These sessions are currently free, and there is no requirement for a professional referral OR a confirmed diagnosis. Take the kids to the ballet

The magic of the ballet can sometimes be intimidating for wee ones (and their parents!), but fantastic company Northern Ballet are determined to change that, with their second production created especially for children, Three Little Pigs, visiting Stirling’s Macrobert Arts Centre this Spring. Following the success of last year’s Ugly Duckling (as seen on CBEEBIES), Three Little Pigs brings the ever-popular fairytale to life with magical costumes, original music and— of course— beautiful dancing, all packed into a 40 minute running time that’s perfect for younger children. Three Little Pigs will visit the Macrobert on Monday 31 March, with three performances throughout the day. Over the weekend of 2526 January 2014, we’d love you, your friends and family, to get involved in Big Garden Birdwatch - the world’s largest wildlife survey! As an activity that started life as something for our youth membership to do in winter, Big Garden Birdwatch has grown into fun for all the family. All you need to do is count the birds in your garden or a local park for one hour then tell us what you see. If you’re not too sure what bird you’ve seen, try our easy to use bird identifier on our website. If you are a teacher or a youth leader get your whole class or group to take part in Big Schools’ Birdwatch taking place in the three weeks from 21 January-14 February, you can do your birdwatch in any hour within those weeks. We also have specially designed resources for younger children – Little Schools’ Birdwatch(under 5s) and Really Big Schools’ Birdwatch(11-14year olds) – something for everyone! Milestones for Kip McGrath and Cellfield in Stirling

Last year was a significant milestone for the popular Kip McGrath Education Centre in Stirling. Run by former teacher and Headteacher, Fiona Macdiarmid, Kip McGrath celebrated 10 years of teaching in Stirling last year and this year Fiona will celebrate five years since starting her other business, Cellfield. Cellfield is a unique and effective treatment for dyslexia and other reading and language difficulties which Fiona brought to the UK after training in New Zealand. Since they started treating clients in Stirling in 2009, Fiona and her team have been amazed by some of the results achieved by their clients and Cellfield’s reputation as a successful treatment is growing.

TAKE A NOTE Make a resolution to always ask for a receipt and to write down everything you spend. Detailing all of your spending allows you to look back at the end of each month and see where the money went, you might be surprised at how much money was wasted! 2. birthday party is the highpoint of the year for most kids - so the pressure is on to get it right. The secret, as ever, is in the planning. But how do you find out which party is right for your child? We guide you through the options.

The traditional party

What is it? An at-home party for the birthday child and friends, with traditional games like pass the parcel (always a winner), pin the tail on the donkey, and musical bumps. Who’s it suitable for? Great for nursery and reception age children, but don’t neglect its values for older kids, especially girls of eight or nine who often enjoy nothing more than inviting their friends back to their house and having a girly time. The pros It’s cheap (or at least, it certainly can be) other parents often stay to help you out, keep you company, especially if you promise a glass of prosecco to help everyone through. The cons You may need to redecorate afterwards, you’ll certainly need to do a major tidy up. It can be difficult to keep your birthday child’s siblings out of the way, which could lead to conflict. Top tips to make it work 1. Agree ground rules with the birthday child beforehand about which rooms are in and out of bounds. 2. Have a timetable for what’s happening when. 3. Think about a project, eg t-shirt decorating, jewellery-making, pirate games, or perhaps a treasure hunt! 4. Give them chance to let off steam in the garden.

The party package

What is it? An out of the house party, where you hire someone else to entertain/exhaust your children. Who’s it suitable for? Kids of all ages catered for from babies to 12 year olds. The pros Your house remains intact, the kids have something to focus on, and lots of opportunities to let off steam/be creative. The cons You will have to hire a venue for some of these parties – but a local church/community hall is a great option. Top tips to make it work 1. Take plenty of water, squash, snacks including fruit - they’ll need plenty of energy for all that running around. 2. Discuss your child with the party provider and make sure it is being tailored to meet your child’s needs. 3. If the provider has a venue, or you are hiring a venue, visit it and see what the space is like, making sure you don’t have too many kids in a small space. 4. Make sure you inform the guests if they need appropriate clothing for the day, perhaps comfy clothes they can be active in. 5. Make ABSOLUTELY sure you’ve checked all restrictions, eg height and age restrictions, beforehand – there’s nothing worse than finding out on the day that one of your guests is too small to participate.

Try to find somewhere with outdoor space as well in case it’s a lovely day. 2. Ask if you can borrow/use playgroup equipment. 3. Have lots of help, and have tea reasonably early in the afternoon so you can get it tidied away before the end. 4. If you’ve got the budget, consider hiring an entertainer - the extra space will make it a lot more fun. 5. Musical games, dancing, discos etc are great fun in community halls.

The restaurant party

What is it? A meal-based party, eg in a pizza restaurant, where the kids are allowed to help or watch in the food preparation. Who’s it suitable for? Older kids of 8-12, children who enjoy the chance to meet and chat more than the chance to run around. The pros At its best, it’s very civilised, you can even have a second table in the restaurant and invite some other parents along, so it’s a meal out for you as well. Children enjoy sense of being ‘grown up’ and eating out with friends. The cons Noisy cherubs may upset other diners.

Top tips to make it work

1. Make sure you’re booked for a time when the restaurant won’t be busy. 2. A restaurant near a park or with a soft play where kids can run off a bit of energy afterwards, is a good idea. 3. Take colouring packs or check the restaurant will provide them, and think of some easy games to play round the table, eg I-Spy, in case things flag. 4. Make sure you sort out the cake arrangements beforehand, most restaurants allow you to bring your own (don’t forget the candles and matches). 5. Don’t limit yourself to chain restaurants - your local eaterie may well be prepared to accommodate your party, and may be more flexible than bigger establishments.

Ways to make sure birthdays remain enjoyable for children with special needs Watch what they eat – It’s easy to let slip strict dietary requirements during a day of celebration. For children with allergies and even vegetarian, let your party host know in advance and make appropriate plans. Avoid overload – Don’t overwhelm with too many guests, lights, candles, music, presents. Decorate simply, put on a relaxing CD, and provide a quiet place where the child can go if s/he wants to. Prepare them – Let your child know in advance what to expect. Explain the plan of the day. Let them sit where they are comfortable and provide them with an exit strategy. Give your child a signal they can use with you if they need to leave a place or situation.

i there, my name is Karen ‘campervan’ Forrester, I live in Dunblane with my husband Pat and our son Jake (8). I am an Enjoy-aBall and Physi-Ball coach based throughout the Stirling area. I work with two different age groups. The first age group is for 18m-3 years and is called Physi-Ball, it is a specialist programme suited for the younger child concentrating on their core stability, balance, jumping, group participation and coordination. The other group I coach is Enjoya-Ball, this is for children aged 3 - 9 years. It is a multi sports coaching programme which involves the children learning 10 sports. It is suitable for both boys and girls, and like Physi-Ball it concentrates on the children learning many techniques such as hand-eye co-ordination, group participation, balance, throwing, catching etc. These classes run daily during school term time and are really good fun for children. Enjoy-A-Ball also do birthday parties for children aged 4 and over. Dunblane is a great central location with lovely walks, parks, tasty new restaurants/ cafes and lovely shops to browse in. Favourite shop Charisma, in Dunblane. They have beautiful gifts for everyone and every occasion. There is sometimes even a little treat for me! Jake loves the Toy Hub in Dunblane, it’s a great place for spending pocket money or for buying presents and the staff are really friendly.

Favourite children’s club/class Biased, but Enjoy-a-Ball/Physi Ball. However my son attends CEK, a Karate Class at the Dunblane Centre which he loves, and his football with the Dunblane Soccer Club 2005. Favourite day out We are members of Historic Scotland, so enjoy going exploring and finding new places to visit. It has been great seeing new sights in Scotland and Wales so far. Especially ones on our doorstep! Favourite child friendly restaurant We love going down to The Birds and Bees in Causewayhead. However, if my son was writing this he would say Frankie and Benny’s. He can’t see past it. Favourite night out without the kids A nice meal and good catch up. The Old Churches has recently opened in Dunblane and it is great to walk down and have a really beautiful meal. Best planet saving tip Leave the car at home. It is not always practical, but walk whenever you can. It is also a good way to chat to family whilst out exploring. No parent should be without Baby wipes, you never know! Handy both for little and big ones. Parenting pet hates Cleaning out the hamster cage. Not nice, it is always me!! Most embarrassing moment Too many to mention or say out loud! People that know me, know I have loads.

Favourite family holiday spot This year we took our son to North Wales for the first time. There was lots to do and see. Beautiful beaches and great castles made it a great adventure for our son. 10 things you didn’t know about Youth Hostels

ostelling offers families a great way to explore Scotland without blowing the budget, whether you’re looking for a lowcost city break or a traditional beach holiday. But you don’t need to compromise on location; SYHA Youth Hostels are situated in some of the most spectacular parts of Scotland, and they are relaxed, welcoming and a lot of fun. Read on to find out more.

1. The Scottish Youth Hostels Association (also known as SYHA Hostelling Scotland) is a not-for-profit, self-funding charity founded in 1931 to encourage everyone – especially young people – to experience and appreciate the Scottish countryside, environment, natural heritage and places of historic and cultural interest, by providing low cost accommodation for them on their travels. All profits are re-invested into the network to maintain properties for future generations. However, although our mission remains the same, a lot of other things have changed! 2. We currently have approximately 20,000 members, with membership free for under 16s and students in full-time education. As well as member discounts and special offers, an annual magazine and e-newsletters, this also gives you access to Hostelling International, providing access to over 4000 youth hostels in 80 countries around the world. 3. Guests’ requirements have changed…and so has hostelling! We now have 3,500 beds available, half of which are in private rooms. Many rooms are en-suite and two of our youth hostels – Edinburgh Central and Oban – are five star! Children are well catered for in all our youth hostels, with lots to keep the whole family entertained. Many offer family rooms, with a good range of facilities including self-catering, laundry rooms, internet access and grounds for the kids to explore. Most youth hostels have a games room and TV lounge where you can chill out after a busy day.

Two of our youth hostels have self-contained flats within them – Oban and Glasgow – so you get all the benefits of your own selfcatering accommodation, with communal facilities and access to expert, local knowledge. 5. Loch Ossian is a superb base from which to explore the remote wilderness of Rannoch Moor. The youth hostel can only be reached on foot via a one-mile track from Corrour Station, Scotland’s remotest railway station made famous for its appearance in the film Trainspotting. 6. We offer activity holidays ranging from guided mountain walking tours to sea kayaking, photography, tai chi, wildlife and conservation courses. Two of our youth hostels, Cairngorm Lodge and Torridon, also accept guests with dogs. 7. Our RentaHostel service enables you to book a range of fantastic properties set in some of Scotland’s finest scenery for exclusive use. Youth hostels can be great for family gatherings, anniversaries, birthdays – the list is endless! 8. Cairngorm Lodge, Aviemore and Braemar in the Cairngorm National Park provide excellent bases for skiing, walking, climbing and visiting the reindeer. 9. A former stalking bothy, Glen Affric youth hostel is an eight-mile walk or cycle from the nearest road.
