Autumn adventures at the National Wallace Monument

Walk to school month: October 2013 Join with schools in over 40 countries worldwide to celebrate the benefits of walking to school during International Walk to School Month this October.

It’s an unmissable sight on the Stirling skyline - where visitors come to hear the story of Scotland’s national hero, Sir William Wallace. More than just telling the story of the Scottish patriot and martyr however, the National Wallace Monument stands in testimony to the craftsmen whose skills created this impressive building, overlooking the site of the Battle of Stirling Bridge. The October holidays are perfect for rediscovering the Monument - with its galleries which take visitors back to the Wars of Independence, and where Wallace’s famous battle sword is displayed. Between 14th and 25th October 2013 there will be a special welcome for younger visitors, with costumed actors telling stories about Wallace, and a chance to search for William Bear, to see where he’s hiding! The number of people choosing not to walk to school means that there are now more cars along our routes to school. By taking part in Walk to School Month, you are helping to reduce congestion along school routes, improve levels of health and fitness and improve our local environmental throughout the Falkirk Council area. The Walk to School campaign in Falkirk Council was first launched in 2005. Over the years the campaign has grown in success with 48 schools and nurseries now taking part in Walk to School days, weeks and months.

Schools are also engaged in a number of other walk to school activities such as: • Walk Once a Week campaigns • Walking Buses • Pedometer challenges The success of Take the Right Route: Walk to School is only possible with the support of the school community. Bannockburn baby and toddler group Bannockburn Baby and Toddler Group meets Friday mornings 930 -1130 am in Bannockburn Community Centre. The cost is £1.50, and includes play time/singing time and a healthy snack. This is a great opportunity for kids to interact with other children and also a chance for parents to have a cuppa and a chat with other new parents. Hope to see you there.

Christmas at Macrobert, Stirling

Beaconhurst pupils cook up a storm in baking contest Talented chef Tara Mathewson proved she had the recipe for success when she scooped top prize in Beaconhurst School’s Great Scottish Bake Off. Seven-yearold Tara, from Bridge of Allan, was named `Beaconhurst Baker of the Year 2013’ in the contest which puts youngsters’ cookery skills to the test. The judges awarded Tara first place for her dishes of Quiche Lorraine and Chocolate Melting Pots in a close-run final. The other finalists, Bruce Dickson, 10 and 12-year-old Martine dos Reis, were awarded joint second place. All three pupils were presented with chef ’s whites embroidered with their names and trophies at the school’s annual prize-giving ceremony. “It was hard work cooking the two dishes at the same time but I enjoyed it and was surprised and delighted when I won. I just couldn’t stop smiling” said Tara. The competition was organised by Beaconhurst’s Catering Manager Marie Brunton and was open to all members of the weekly after-school Cooking Club she runs. “It was a closerun competition and I was chuffed to bits with how the pupils did in the final - their food was delicious.” Mrs Brunton plans to hold another competition next year. “The Club is a good chance for children to develop a life skill as well as learning about healthy eating and having fun.” Beaconhurst School, Bridge of Allan www.beaconhurst.com

Lecropt Nursery, Bridge of Allan was established in 2003 by Lorna Jack, a working mum looking to provide more choice in the area for other parents – she started the nursery using what she called “the mum approach.” In 2006 she began Bridge of Allan After School Club and took over Old Doune Road Nursery, Dunblane – the reputation of all establishments has went from strength to strength over the years! Why do you like living where you do? We have lived in Bridge of Allan for 7 years and love it here. People are friendly, the main street is full of great little shops & eateries, the Uni is here so facilities are amazing and the kids often get to meet children from all over the world!

Favourite child friendly restaurant It has to be Corrieri’s in Causewayhead. Never stressful, kids always feel so welcome, and the food is amazing.

Favourite shop My favourite shops would have to be Divinity in the Old Arcade and Natures Solutions on Baker Street (both Stirling), selling wonderful little gift ideas from crystals to organic skincare and children’s meditation CD’s or Angel Cards. I also love the shops in Henderson Street in Bridge of Allan, lovely gift ideas, and clothes shops. Browns Deli and The Treehouse are favourites of ours too. The kids favourite shop has to be Good Green Fun, they take their pocket money in and get to buy a few things that have been pre-loved for half the price! Favourite park One of our favourite parks is the Laighills Park in Dunblane, beautiful setting, great play area, full sized grass football pitch, skatepark and a river for the dogs to cool down in. Favourite children’s club/class Our 4 oldest boys go to SCRFC, all love the game, fantastic coaches, good ethics & making friends from all over! I teach Preschool gymnastics in the Dunblane Centre on a Tuesday and also to primary aged kids in both Dunblane and in Bridge of Allan Primary. As well as the fun element we build strength, balance and flexibility as well as giving them tools to deal with stress. I am also looking

Choosing after-school activities By Ellen Arnison As well as learning new skills, more subtle benefits include fostering a sense of community, increasing self-sufficiency and allowing a child – particularly one in a large family – something they feel is their own. Club time can also allow one-to-one time for other children.

While these advantages are very real, care must be exercised when choosing activities. Too many and the wrong ones will only leave everyone fed up and exhausted.

Not long after your son or daughter disappears through the classroom door for the first time, the choice becomes bewildering. Their schoolbags come home stuffed with leaflets from this or that organisation promising all manner of benefits from enrolling in their classes. You may find yourself feeling guilty if you don’t sign up to everything.

The easy choices are the ones your children are desperate to do. Although beware of signing up for something just because your son or daughter’s best friend is doing it, this may not be a good enough reason.

Please take a deep breath and relax. Whilst extra-curricular activities are not essential, there are many benefits from a few wellchosen groups, clubs or classes. With the best will in the world, school cannot teach all the skills you might consider essential for modern life. Swimming lessons, for example, or cycling proficiency are crucial for safety. In addition, carefully selected activities can bring numerous other benefits that could help your child now and in the future. They will get a huge confidence boost from participating in an enjoyable activity they are successful at. A shy child, for example, may flourish in a dance class.

Our holiday courses for children aged 7 & 8 and 9-13 are suitable for those who have either done no cycle proficiency training or who feel they need more practice to cycle safely on the roads. Ask yourself if your child gets something from the activity that they don’t get elsewhere and that it compliments what’s already going on. For example, an active youngster who is already in the football team might be better balancing their activities with music or drama than adding another sport. Equally a child timid in the classroom may get great gains from being in a choir if it boosts their confidence. A more tricky area is an activity you’d like your child to do when they’d rather spend their after-school time at home relaxing. Only you can tell if they are genuinely exhausted by a day’s education or not. However, do take their views into account as there really is no point in forcing a child into something they hate. And some school stages are more taxing than others.

No one wants to spend all their time ferrying children from one activity to another while dinner still needs to be prepared and other children become resentful. So only commit to out-of-school activities that fit comfortably into the schedule and budget. It may transpire that your time and money can be better spent on family activities at home. When you do decide on a class or club – take some time to check it out. Find out how long it has been running, do other parents recommend it, are the staff Disclosure or CRB checked? While extra classes keep your children entertained and active, it’s also important that they have some unstructured time – even that they are allowed to feel bored. If they bounce from one organised thing to the next, they’ll never learn the important skill of amusing themselves.

Halloween Time

t’s Hallowe’en, pumpkin lanterns, trick or treat, party fun, great local bonfires and fireworks, there’s something for everyone on this page! We enjoy a bit of trick or treating in our family, however it isn’t for everyone so we make sure we pre-warn those we will visit – lucky neighbours! The kids enjoy getting dressed up and doing a wee turn, obviously the possibility of a treasure trove of sweets that will last the month is a bit of an attraction! A traditional Hallowe’en party with games is something all kids will enjoy, a good chance to invite some friends around and have some good spooky fun – happy Hallowe’en!

Games

Swing the apple (or donut) - hang apple/ donut from washing line and it’s a race to see who eats it first. Wrap the mummy (a personal favourite) – buy lots of cheap toilet roll. Kids/adults split into teams of 2, one person is the mummy wrapper the other the mummy. First team to have a wrapped mummy win! Lucky dip – fill a baby bath or tub with baked beans. Wrap some hallowe’en gifts in cling film – vampire teeth, spiders, wriggly worms. Challenge is who’s brave enough to put their hand in the witches cauldron and see what she is putting in her spells! Taste tastic – lay out lots of small samples of edible items, some can be yummy and some a bit yuck! Perhaps jam, marmite,

Ideas for Halloween

olives, mustard … The player is blindfolded and can smell/taste to guess what it is! Pumpkin bowling – arrange a triangle of empty plastic bottles/tin cans. Players take turns to roll the pumpkin at the target. Catch the cat by the tail – this is a variation of duck, duck, goose. Kids sit on floor in circle, one child – the cat tucks a tail (scarf/ tie) into waistband and begins circling the group, touching each child on the head and saying “cat.” When she/he decides they want a chase they tap someone on the head and say “dog!” The dog chases the cat around the circle, the cat must take the dogs spot before the dog grabs the cats tail. And finally everyone must Dook for apples – fill a large basin with water and lots of apples. Everyone then takes a turn to catch a bobbing apple by biting it – some people prefer to drop a fork from their mouth and try to spear the apple! Have fun!!!

Food/decorations

Make wizard’s blood cocktails from cranberry and pomegranate juice with blackcurrant squash and sparkling water, monsters eyes by cutting boiled eggs in half, add a raisin for the pupil and use red food colouring for the veins, or try bones made with pretzels with some marshmallows stuck at either end and cover them in white chocolate. For a very effective decoration blow up lots of white balloons, insert a glow stick and add a face with a black marker. Licorice sticks make great twisted hallowe’en trees. The Power of Play A

s adults we generally don’t take much notice of what children are doing when they are playing. In fact we may just be grateful for those moments when our children are occupied in playing and there is finally some respite from demands on our attention. But if we do stop to watch our children playing, we see that it’s not ‘just playing’ – there is something magical, spontaneous, uninhibited, creative and rejuvenating happening. As Plato, the Ancient Greek Philosopher said “You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation”. Play is the ‘window’ into a child’s world.

Play is a child’s natural, spontaneous way to explore the world and express themselves. It has long been recognized by educators and psychologists as vital to children’s development, helping them to grow physically, intellectually, emotionally, and socially. Free play (unstructured) in particular, provides opportunities for children to play out and rehearse roles and feelings, try out new ideas, practice facing challenges, rethink experiences and work out solutions. Play also has the power to heal, especially when children have problems that are disrupting their lives and those around them. Children’s thoughts and emotions naturally come to the surface during play and it is a good way for children to find solutions to problems. It’s generally easier for children to make positive changes when they are playing and playing allows children to express feelings and anxieties that may be difficult to put into words.

Playful families

Whilst play comes so naturally to children, as adults we have often lost the ability to play and joining children in their play doesn’t feel ‘comfortable’ as it requires putting aside our familiar ‘adult’ roles, letting go of our authority and realism for a while, and risking appearing (to the adult world only), silly. But research clearly shows that playing with our children has enormous benefits. It allows family members to relax and laugh together, we can change roles, bend the rules a bit, and go where the fun takes us. And kids just love it when parents step out of parental mode and join them as equals in play. Crucially, playing together can also bring parents and children closer and help to build warm and lasting relationships. Adults and children alike develop skills in talking and hearing each other; children gain a sense of security, self-confidence and a view of themselves as effective in the

You don’t need any specialist skills or equipment to join your child’s play. Just give your undivided attention, watch and listen, comment occasionally on what you see and if you want to get involved allow your child to ‘direct’ you like a film director would an actor. Resist the temptation to teach, criticise/praise or guide the play (unless for safety reasons) as this will help your child express themselves without the anxiety of failure or judgement. And don’t worry – letting your child take charge in their play for a while isn’t going to turn them into ‘bossy’ children. It needn’t be time-consuming either- just ten minutes a day of joint play will give your children the message that you are interested in them, that they are valuable and will help to strengthen your relationship.
