Beaconhurst nursery is first class Beaconhurst School’s talented team of nursery staff are celebrating after receiving a first class report from the Care Inspectorate. The School’s Junior Start (nursery) was awarded Excellents in all four categories – the highest level possible – following an inspection. The achievement by the Bridge of Allan based nursery, which caters for children aged 3-5, is recognition of the high quality care it offers. Delighted Junior Start Team Leader Laura John says “We are ecstatic to receive such a fantastic report from the Care Inspectorate. Happy birthday Kip McGrath, Stirling! Stirling’s Kip McGrath Education Centre is celebrating 10 years of quality tuition. With student numbers now around 200, Centre Director, Fiona Macdiarmid can hardly believe she welcomed her first student in January 2003 and since then, has seen well over 1000 children pass through the Centre. When local mum of 2, Pauline Macmillan from West Lothian first went along to a Jack & Jill Market as a shopper in July 2011 little did she know that just 18 months later, she would be Company Director. Favourite child friendly restaurant Got to be Corrieri’s every time! We love it as it is relaxed, noisy and friendly with fantastic food. Meadowpark is also nice now it has been refurbished but I think more for older children as it is quieter. We love Sara’s brownies and scones at the Cowane’s Coffee House in the Cowane’s Hospital, the baking is well worth the trip.
Why you like living where you do? Stirling is a beautiful city steeped in history and close to the countryside, yet big enough to offer everything a large city can offer.
Favourite night out without the kids The Vue Cinema or Corrieri’s for a meal.
Favourite shop For younger children and wine supplies it has to be Toy Hub in Dunblane High Street, a wonderful range of high quality toys and wines. For clothing and shoes for women I check out Woodlane in Doune every now and then. Favourite park Got to be the Kings Park for the view of the Castle, the park and the climbing frame and there is plenty of green space to set up a picnic. Favourite children’s club/class The University of Stirling for children’s tennis and swimming, and Livilands Tennis Club for the children’s tennis lessons. The kids used to play Rugby and I found Stirling Rugby Club fantastically well ran and very friendly. For educational classes I can’t recommend Fiona Macdiarmid at Kip McGrath Stirling and Cellfield Stirling more. Favourite day out For me it would be a walk around the Kings Park, a visit to Xtreme Karting or a game of tennis at Livilands with the family. Also a walk around the lake at Stirling University to feed the swans is nice.

No parent should be without Labels4Kids name labels of course and Herbalife Nutrition which I am now also a distributor for in Stirling. Parenting pet hates XBOX…worse purchase ever. Don’t do it if you want them to study. It’s addictive and a constant source of argument in the family with the shoot ‘em up nature of the games. Most embarrassing moment When we posted on my kids facebook pages, by accident, instead of labels4kids and it said “debating with mum about how much the tooth fairy should pay these days”…caused a laugh in the office but the kids were horrified and let us know as much on return from school! Most loved children’s book The Gruffalo and Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy. For older kids we like Chill and Shiver, both by Alex Nye based in Dunblane at Sherrifmuir. Most played with toys When they were little it was a chain of plastic rings joined together that we received from Australia, then toy trains. We would never be without our lego collection and a chess set.
Most successful recipe We love chicken in mustard sauce. Just cook the chicken in butter and remove then add cream, a teaspoon of mustard, a drop of lemon, salt and pepper, a chicken stock cube - simple and great. We use Dijon mustard. Telling the story of Scotland’s ‘Braveheart’
To some he is Scotland’s national hero, to others he was a freedom fighter who challenged an oppressive English king, but to millions he is known simply as ‘Braveheart’, the legendary figure from the Oscar-winning movie which still brings visitors to Stirling to discover the story of Sir William Wallace. Since Victorian times the National Wallace Monument has told the story of everything that Wallace achieved in his short dramatic life, and as visitors admire the magnificent broadsword with which he struck terror into the hearts of his enemies, they can follow the tale of his exploits and adventures. Be a safe cyclist
We are running on road cycling beginners courses, during the Easter holidays for children aged 7 & 8 and 9 – 13. The courses are suitable for children who have done no previous cycle proficiency training or those who feel they need more practise to cycle safely on the road. The training starts in a traffic free area before moving on to quiet roads. The classes for children aged 9 – 13 are over 4 mornings, 10am – 12 noon, cost £45 per child. The classes for children aged 7 & 8 are shorter, 2.00pm – 3.30pm, cost £40 per child. A great day out for all the family – here’s what’s on at Callendar House this EasterMinted -An exhibition detailing the history of a subject of great interest to virtually everyone – MONEY! Pirates and Princesses Parade
On Saturday 13th April there is lots of fun to be had for all the family at the Pirates and Princesses Parade in Falkirk High Street. At 1pm there will be free face-painting and pirate hat making at the Steeple area. Barbossa and his band of Buccaneers will search the town for treasure at 2pm and at 3:30pm the pirates will board their ship and parade along the High Street. The parade will leave the East end of the High Street and run all the way to Lint Riggs and back down the High Street. Make sure you find a spot to enjoy the parade anywhere along the route. Childcare and nurseries a day) of free pre-school education from the age of 3, this usually starts the term after their 3rd birthday. This can be provided in a local authority nursery, a partnership private nursery, a nursery within a private school, a playgroup or with a childminder. If your child is younger, check whether your employer can offer help towards your nursery costs through the childcare voucher scheme. Under this, money is taken out of your pay packet before deductions, giving you savings on tax and National Insurance - in return, you are given a voucher or e-voucher that you forward to your nursery, and the amount is deducted from your bill. So it’s a way of getting more childcare for your money - though it requires your employer’s cooperation.
S
tudies show that attending nursery can increase a child’s confidence, because it involves mixing with adults, and other children, from outside the family group. It gives children social skills, and experience from an early age of an environment outside the home. The nursery ‘key worker’ scheme, under which each child is allocated a special member of staff with whom they can bond, helps provide security.
Healthy food and menus are another big plus of nursery provision, staff work hard to ensure children are given a balanced diet. And as your child gets older, play and learning opportunities will be targeted appropriately. Staff are trained in what young children can do when, and will be conscious of a child’s likely interests and potential. Nurseries work best for parents who have regular working hours, because it’s difficult or impossible for staff to deal with erratic patterns of collection and drop-off. Nurseries often open early in the morning and some close late in the evening, but they are not as flexible as, say, a nanny or a childminder. On the other hand, they have the big advantage that only very, very rarely will they be closed at short notice - so they’re more reliable than one carer who may be ill or have to cope with a sudden family emergency.

Make sure you read the most recent Care Inspectorate report for the nurseries you are considering. Be guided by your instincts when looking at a nursery. It may seem a cliché to say do the children look happy, but it is an important barometer of whether a nursery is good. Be aware of the quality of both indoor and outdoor play areas, are the spaces pleasant, bright, welcoming, and do they seem safe? Ask about meals, how the food is prepared, and what time meals are served. What kinds of snacks are provided and how often are they available? Watch the children while they’re playing, and pay attention to how much they’re interacting with the staff. How do the staff come across - do they seem happy, relaxed, fun to be around? Do you feel comfortable talking to them? Do they seem interested in your child and his/her likes/dislikes and interests? Ask about organised play sessions - weekly music groups, perhaps, or storytelling. Are there trips to the library, and to the

How to choose the right nursery Start your nursery search well ahead of the time when you’re actually going to need to leave your child. The more confident you are of the choices you make, the happier you’ll be when it comes to the day you have to head back to the office. Ask around so you get other parents’ views on what nurseries are like in your area. Make a shortlist of ones that might work for you (remember to take geography into account: how easy will it be for you or your partner to do the drop off/collect?) and don’t hesitate to ask to visit a second time.

park? How are these organised, and how often do they take place? Make sure you understand what the nursery charges, how payment is made, and exactly what the fees include (for example, do they cover meals, nappies, outings). How many weeks a year is the nursery open? How are parents involved in the nursery, and are there opportunities for parents to meet up?
Is all well when I’m not there? As your child is settling into nursery, trust your instincts about how well it’s going. You know your child better than anyone else, so if your hunch is that your child is happy and contented, that’s almost certainly the case. Remember that in the early days, he or she will probably get more tired than usual - nursery is a big change, emotionally as well as physically. Both your child and you need time to adjust to the new set-up. Try not to drag out your goodbyes. Leaving your child will be difficult, especially at first, but keeping it brief will help you both. Remember that your child may cry every day when you drop them off (and so might you!) for quite a while; this is a normal part of getting used to this big change in your lives. Cope with it by emphasising the positives. Think about why you’re working (to make money and provide a better standard of living; to ensure you have an interesting life, and income, in the longer term) and how much your child will benefit from a wider social network.

If you have any worries at all about your child’s nursery you must resolve them, and as quickly as possible. So as soon as something strikes you as ‘not right’, talk to the nursery manager or your allocated member of staff - many niggles are simply down to a lack of communication. Explain what’s up, and the chances are you’ll never have to mention it again, and things will all be smoothed over.

Baby feature It can be tough, but there’s help out there
S
o, you’ve had a baby. You’re a new mum and of course you’re tired, but you’re also elated and amazed at this tiny new being that has entered your life. You spend every waking hour staring in adoration at their tiny little toes and gorgeous little mouth. Your exhaustion doesn’t matter as you drift from day to day in a haze of milky delight.
Or maybe you don’t. If you are like me then those first few weeks, even months of being a new mum are the hardest days of your life. Not only are you exhausted after weeks of unbroken sleep but you’re also struggling with breast feeding or getting your baby to take a bottle, your baby is unsettled and suffers from reflux and why oh why won’t it just go to sleep? Even if it’s your second or third baby, it’s still just as hard. You’ve got baby blues, or perhaps even post-natal depression. Now the most important thing you can do, even if you don’t feel like it, is to get out there, meet some other new mums and get some support. Support groups If you’re tired, struggling to bond with or feed your baby or have a touch of the baby blues, there are plenty of support networks out there. • Health visitors – Health visitors are there for the welfare of babies and their parents, and your health visitor should support you in whatever way they can. They should get in touch with you in the first few days of you returning home from hospital, but if you don’t know how to reach your Health Visitor your doctor’s surgery will be able to tell you. Most libraries will run either a Bookbug session or Baby Rhyme Time where you can go for ½ hour songs and stories and its FREE! There are also specific Dad Toddle Time sessions. Postnatal depression Postnatal Depression (PND) is often not fully understood by mums who experience it, yet one in three mothers will suffer from it. Becoming a parent can be a shock and it is perfectly normal to feel emotional, vulnerable and sensitive after your baby is born. Some mothers may feel confused about their feelings - they feel they should be overjoyed and instantly fall in love with their baby but this is not always the case, especially if you’ve had a difficult labour or a traumatic delivery. Baby blues typically occur between 3-5 days after the birth, and one theory is that they coincide with the hormonal changes that occur as the breast milk starts to come in. Another theory is that they are due to the ‘come down’ after the effects of endorphins, or a sort of physical shock reaction after the upheaval of birth. You may feel weepy, irritable, have a low mood and feel that you lack confidence in being able to look after your baby but these feelings usually subside after a week or so. However, postnatal depression is more serious and must be treated immediately. Symptoms of PND can include: • sleeping problems • crying a lot • not eating or over-eating • physical pains such as headaches or stomach pains or blurred vision • a lack of motivation to get up and do anything • a constant sense of anxiety, sometimes escalating into panic attacks
• a feeling of being lonely or isolated • having difficulty concentrating • feeling overwhelmed and unable to cope • having no interest in sex • feeling guilty about everything and wondering if you are a bad mother • being overly protective of your baby • feeling emotionally disconnected from your baby • having frightening thoughts about harming yourself or your baby or about bad things happening If you feel any of the above, it is important to seek professional help. Your GP may suggest antidepressant medication and/ or counselling and your health visitor will know about local postnatal depression support groups. You can also go to www.apni.org or www.birthtraumaassociation.org.uk for information, support and advice. Also, tell your family and close friends, as talking about your feelings is part of the cure. Meet a mum and join a class Whether it’s a picnic in the park, or a mother-and-baby group, it’s important to get out there and meet other new mums.The NCT arrange regular coffee mornings and local playgroups often arrange get-togethers outside of the playgroup.You don’t have to ‘join’ these groups or come every time, but you’ll be sure to get a warm welcome and you will find these meet-ups invaluable. Alternatively, join a class.This will give you an opportunity, not only to meet other mums but also to bond with your baby. There are a number of local classes specifically for babies offering a variety of activities from swimming, music and action.
