BuggyFit Glasgow Celebrates 5 Year Anniversary ...And they’ve just won a NetMums ‘Classes for You’ Award

uggy Fit Glasgow South operated by Wendy MacLeod, celebrated 5 years in operation this April and was delighted to be nominated as a Netmums, ‘Classes for you’ Award Winner. As well as radio and Newspaper coverage with BBC Radio Scotland and the Daily Record, there has also been involvement in a short film for the Commonwealth Games. It has indeed been a fun and busy year so far! Buggyfit is a UK wide franchise outfit with over 300 trainers and several hundred new Mums and their babies taking part each week. Buggyfit across the board is empathetic to the needs of a new Mum but also understands the need to help women regain their strength and energy levels post birth. The beauty of the classes is that you get fit and strong again and baby benefits from the fresh-air. An average class involves bursts of power walking with the buggies as well as hill runs, press-ups and lunges and a rehabilitative core session to finish off the session. Class arrangements do change from week to week and Mums are offered
easy and harder options depending on their current ability. Wendy, a weight management specialist is a big ‘clean eating’ advocate and often runs Buggyfit Bootcamps alongside standard classes but with a strong focus on good, well-balanced, clean eating programmes. Mid Gavin Nursery in Renfrewshire recently celebrated their annual Sports Day. All the children in the Butterfly room (3-5 year olds) had been practising hard for their races and when the day came took part with great enthusiasm and excitement. With an obstacle, egg and spoon, bean bag and relay races, there was a lot of running, shouting and whooping and that was just the parents supporting their children. As some of the Nursery children were preparing to leave to go to Primary School, teachers from all schools have been visiting the children to get to know them and the other way round and visits were arranged for the children to familiarise themselves with their new individual schools. The staff and children also presented a huge cheque of £3200 for the amount raised to support Corrine Hutton in her worthwhile charity ‘Finding your Feet’. Things to do for all the Family this Summer Ping! It’s time to unplug and reconnect with your family Joanna Moorhead has some ideas on how to do it
S
ummer is a great time to enjoy being together with your nearest and dearest. But for many families these days, even together time is dominated by mobiles phones, iPads, TV and other devices. According to a recent survey, though, even kids themselves recognise the need to unplug and welcome the chance to ‘do something different’. Here are our top 20 ideas for what that ‘something different’ might be. 1. Go wild swimming: swimming in a Loch or in the sea, is a very different experience from an indoor pool
2. Build a den: whether you do this indoors or in the garden, or out in the woods or on the beach, you’ll have loads of fun. 3. Go fruit picking: not only will you have a good time, you’ll also be setting up your next family project - making jam! 4. Sleep under canvas: for families that haven’t camped before, even one night away, or even in the back garden, can be a huge adventure. 5. Cook on a campfire: this is a perfect add-on to your camping adventure. Get advice online about how to build your fire and what foods are best to cook on it. 6. Go on a long bike ride: if you’ve all got your own bikes you probably do this all the time. If not, it can be a really fabulous and different day out to hire bikes and follow a cycle trail. 7. Play a board game: a game like Monopoly or Cluedo, which children can play from a young age or can play in teams, is a genuinely bonding experience. 8. Reorganise your family photographs: online galleries can be a great way of sharing pictures with relatives and friends – but there’s a huge amount of fun to be had from creating an old fashioned album together. 9. Borrow a dog for a weekend: if you’re not a dog-owning family, see if you can borrow a neighbours dog or a friend's dog and give them a break from walking their dog. It can be a hugely rewarding experience. 10.Climb a big hill: this can be a mountain or a fairly small hill, depending on how old your children are. 11. Go fishing: you can do this with a net in the rock pools at the beach, or in a stream or river inland. 12.Have a snail race: find some snails, and set up the course; place bets on which snail will win, and watch the action unfold. 13.Go star-gazing: do some research beforehand, and when you get a clear evening, head off in to a space where the sky is open in search of the North Pole, Saturn and the Plough. 14.Hunt for treasure or bones: beaches can be great places for this, or look online to see if there are any ‘treasure troves’ near you 15.Go geocaching: ok, so this is one activity you will need your mobile phone for. But the high-tech treasure hunt is fascinating, and it pulls all members of the family in. Try it! More information at www.geocaching.com 16.Switch roles in the kitchen: if you’re usually the meal-maker, and the children are usually the table-setters, do things the other way round. 17. Have a family talent show: this is a good one when another family or relatives visiting. Everyone has to do a turn; no wriggling out allowed, however shy the mums and dads are. 18.Make a family journal or scrap book: this can be a good project for a family holiday or a school holiday. Like a talent show, everyone needs to contribute something – a review of a local pub, an accounts of a day out, or a book review. 19.Fly a kite: they’re cheap and easy to buy, or you can even make your own. Read up on tips about how to fly them at www.thekitesociety.org. 20.Go birdwatching: you don’t need to know anything about birds to enjoy watching them, but if you go to a birdwatching sanctuary or wetlands centre you’ll learn loads. f you are planning on taking a road trip with the children this summer either in the UK or abroad, we’ve put together some tips for long car journeys with the kids. Hope some of these help... The key to successful long car journeys with kids is to think of it as part of your holiday and make sure you all enjoy it. This is a chance to spend family time together, to talk, to share each other’s music, to see new things and to visit new places and forge great memories. Every time you complete a journey that is actually fun for the children, the easier it will be to sell them on the idea next time. Our family regularly drives long distances with the children and much prefer it to flying. Tantrums, spills, accidents and illness are so much more easily handled in a confined, (and sound-proofed) car than when stuck in a long queue of tense fellow travelers. Our last two summers involved approximately 4000 mile road trips around Europe and the kids had a fantastic time though it has to be said, the back seat of the car has never really recovered. 1. Treat the car journey as the start of your holiday (and not a chore).Make sure it is fun for the kids and as stress-free as possible for mum and dad. 2. Eliminate as much time related stress as possible. In other words, try not to have a ferry crossing booked at the end of a 7 hour car drive. If you can, overnight near the terminal. Otherwise every single contraflow will stress you out, right from the start of your trip. If there’s no rush to get where you are going, there’s no need to get stressed about traffic or roadworks. Remember your holiday has already started. 3. Charge up your screens & other gadgets. Buy or borrow at least one portable DVD player, Nintendo or iPod etc. Ensure every gadget is charged ahead of travelling and that you have enough travel leads and multi adaptors for everyone to use the 12v cigarette lighter socket. Obviously you don’t want the kids plugged in to screens for too long as they’ll never see where they have been. So ration their screen time and use it as a tool for rewarding good behaviour if necessary. 4. Take regular breaks. Break up your journey regularly with picnics, walks and play areas. Fresh air and a runaround for the kids plus a power nap for the driver reduces stress

all round. If budget allows, an overnight hotel with a pool gives the kids something to look forward to and burns off energy before bed time. 5. Buy some journey presents (these could be called bribes). Buy some small presents, like Christmas stocking fillers, and wrap them up for the journey. Action figures, crayons, DVDs etc. Ensure they see the bag full of presents beforehand. You can then award a present (bribe) for milestones or legs of the trip achieved without arguing, fighting or tantrums. This encourages and rewards good behaviour as well as keeping them entertained for the next leg of the journey. 6. Stock up with snacks. OK, your back seat upholstery will take a bit of a hammering but snacks are so, so important. 7. Play games and quizzes. Kids have you all to themselves for once (and vice versa) so why not take advantage? 50 Games to Play in Cars is good. Our favourite is this number plate game: Take the letters from the number plate of the car in front of you and make up a proper sentence. Score points and prizes for cleverest or funniest etc. Nowadays, you can buy all sorts of spotter charts for particular landmarks and vehicles for the children to look out for. Car journeys are also a good opportunity to test their spelling and maths ability. There are no distractions (for either of you) and they often enjoy this time, knowing you are not secretly checking your emails or texts. 8. Travel in convoy, if possible. If you’re holidaying with friends or grandparents then, if possible, travel in convoy. It makes such a difference for them to see a new friend or face when you stop and gives them something else to look forward to. 9. Stock up on essentials such as baby wipes and water. Lots of baby wipes are a must. As well as bottles of drinking water, we keep several big jerrycans of 5 and 10 litres of water in the boot, pretty much permanently. Sooner or later you’ll be thankful you did too. We also keep a roll of black bin bags in the boot as sometimes a complete set of clothing or shoes needs separated from everything else until such time it can be dealt with properly. 10.Involve them in navigation. We have a map and a globe that the kids can place stickers on once they have visited those places. Take with you a map or two and buy a couple of packets of ‘organiser’ sticky dots, one colour for each child. Tell them where they are heading to, where they are staying next, or are passing though and award them coloured dots to place on the map for whoever sees the town/sea/river first. If you have SatNav, you’ll notice how quickly they fathom the concept of the map and soon become aware of how long it takes to travel from town to town.
Summer is coming and whilst we all enjoy the wonderful weather it is important to remember to keep your young children safe from the sun! Shade - It is always important to provide areas of shade, under trees, umbrellas or canopies especially for babies who should be kept out of direct sunlight. Cover up - When outdoors, protect your child’s skin with loose-fitting clothes, and a wide-brimmed hat that shades their face, neck and ears. Sunglasses are also important to protect their eyes. Sunscreen - Use at least a factor 30 sunscreen and choose a broad-spectrum brand that has a four or five-star rating. It’s important to choose sunscreens that are formulated for children’s and babies’ skin as these products are less likely to contain alcohol or fragrances that might irritate the skin and cause allergic reactions. Apply the sunscreen to areas that cannot be protected by clothing, such as the face, neck, ears, feet and backs of hands. Apply sunscreen generously and regularly often throughout the day.as sunscreen can easily be washed off, rubbed off or sweated out of the body. here’s a world of fantasy and adventure waiting for children in all Glasgow Libraries this summer when they take part in ‘Mythical Maze’ the Tesco Bank Summer Reading Challenge 2014 from Monday 30th June to Friday 8th August. Children aged 4 – 12 years can join in the adventure by finding their way around a labyrinth with the simple challenge to read 6 or more books over the summer holidays to keep up their reading skills. As they read they will meet some larger than life characters from myths and legends (with a modern twist) including a Yeti, the Minotaur, Medusa, Mermaids and even the Loch Ness Monster! They can keep track of it all on their fold-up poster and collect stickers and other rewards along the way. he school summer holidays are now here....and whilst for some families it gives you a chance to catch your breath for others it now means it’s purely down to you to fill your child’s day with a multitude of activities. Whatever your plans we’ve come up with some ideas for keeping the kids busy this summer especially if you are staying in Scotland this year. Obviously not every moment has to be time-tabled but kids do like to know what they’re doing. And if you’re working you want to know that they are being well looked after, maybe learning a new skill and hopefully, having fun at the same time. We are an active family but left to their own devices my kids will gravitate towards a screen (if you are one of those parents who has found a way to stop this happening please share - I am all ears!) The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, located on Renfrew Street in Glasgow city centre, has a packed programme of music and drama summer schools for children and young people running throughout July. From early years music classes for 1–2 year olds to musical theatre workshops for 15–17 year olds, there is something for children of all ages. The summer programme is designed to be open to any young person who has a creative side and wants to have fun with other children who share the same interests. Explore Games from across the world and from the past at Scotland Street School Museum The Games We Play is the new exhibition this Summer at Scotland Street School Museum. On until Sunday 7 September, it is a chance to explore games and play from across different cultures and time periods. From the Papua New Guinea story of Pikinini Wantaim Bubu, which shows how children learn to be adults from their grandparents, through strategy games like chess and mahjong to the physical fun of street games such as kite flying and cricket, this exhibition looks at the importance of games. Archaeological evidence shows that games predate the existence of writing, so people right across the world having been playing games for a very long time. More than just pure fun and enjoyment, playing also gives children skills for life, develops their imaginations and pits adult against adult in battles of skill, courage and endurance. Blackpool Pleasure Beach Reviewed by JW Patrick (with kids age 9 and 5) Blogging at: www.jwpatrick.co.uk I am one of those bad dads who has so far point-blank refused to take my children to Disneyworld, Disneyland Paris, Alton Towers or, until last month, Blackpool Pleasure Beach. My selfish excuses have ranged from 'the kids are too young' to 'I hate thrill rides' 'I hate walking', 'I hate crowds' and ' I really hate queues. 'But it's not about you, it's about them!' is the usual mum response and my counter that 'Family fun needs to be fun for all the family' is met
with a distinct lack of sympathy. But this April I finally relented as the kids are now old enough for most rides and Blackpool is just three hours south. Fortunately, we arranged for family members who love thrill rides to join us – which meant that while my nine-year-old-son had the time if his life on the Pepsi Max Big One, Revolution and the Big Dipper, myself and my five year old daughter and I had a magical time at Nickelodeon Land where the rides are gentler and familiar characters like Dora wander around. Rides that we particularly enjoyed together were Wallace & Grommit and the old-fashioned Carousel Derby Racer with pipe organ. Valhalla and Arctic Racer were thrilling also and not too high but not suitable for under 7s. In fact, as the site is only 40 acres, and the younger kids’ rides are close to the big thrill rides it's quite easy to split up and meet back after each ride if one member cannot get onto a ride because they are too short (or too scared!) Also the queues weren't nearly as bad as I'd feared and the longest queue was for the Grand Prix because the cars only take 2 people at a time (40mins) compared to the big ride queues which progressed fairly swiftly. Snacks and food aren't badly priced on site (though you can’t take in picnics) and they have a Rainy Day free return the next day, which is a nice idea. Finally, there is a day pass for just £6, for those who don’t want to go on any rides which is just one of those thoughtful touches that make you realise they really do consider families. It turned out to be one of our best family days out ever and the kids keep talking about going back. I’m tempted...

ibby Hall Village is a family-run holiday park on the Lancashire coast just south of Blackpool. The park is in the countryside close to picturesque Wrea Green, a classic English village of thatched houses, cricket pitch beside the duck pond and traditional pub. Blackpool Pleasure Beach is a 15 minute drive away, as are the beaches of Lytham and St Annes which have both long stretches of quiet walks as well as a bustling seaside pier with arcades and donkey rides. The 100 acre Ribby Hall Village is dominated by a hotel and spa, but we stayed in one of the surrounding self-catering 'Luxury Cottages' which sleeps 6 but there are also Pine Lodges which sleep 4 or 6 as well as three high-end properties on site that sleep 8,10 or 14. The Ribby Hall pricing matrix is quite complicated and prices depend on each property's size, their proximity to one of the village's two small lakes and the season. But the system is very flexible, and they even offer single motel rooms by the night which means you could juggle the kids around with friends (which is what we did) to secure the best deals and share costs. Prices for a sleeps 4 stretch from around £280 for a mid-week stay (4 nights) right up to
nearly £2000 for a full week in peak season. They always have offers so check their website for latest deals and packages. Anyway, our single story mews cottage, part of a close of about a dozen adjoining cottages, was spacious and spotlessly clean. Patio doors opened onto a picnic table and BBQ area adjoining a large shared green, so the kids soon found other kids from neighbouring cottages which was great for them. (and us!). The older kids (8+) were fine heading off on their own to explore, but as there are ponds and lakes around (plus slow moving park traffic) they probably need to be fencing in some of the accommodation gardens for those families with young kids. However, the family of baby ducks that came running over every time they saw us, kept our youngest amused for hours! The cottage's kitchen facilities were pretty basic (ie. no dishwasher) but overall the property was just fine. The park has a wide range of free activities but our days centred around the large leisure pool with flumes, spa tubs, baby pool with toys. The well-appointed leisure centre also has squash courts and various fitness classes (as well as a Starbucks and takeaway pizza joint!). Just outside is a large adventure playpark for younger kids which kept them amused. Other family activities on site (which cost extra) include pedaloes and canoes on the small lake plus climbing wall, pony rides, archery and many more. Segways and bikes can be rented by the hour. There is also a luxury Spa up in the main hotel with a full slate of treatments plus gym and adults-only spa pool. As well as the takeaway pizza joint, there are two restaurants on site (and two more up in the hotel). The very family friendly Bar & Grill which is ideal for kids as there are entertainers on stage and although it offered excellent good value food and the service was very friendly, it did begin to feel like we were stuck in a never-ending kids party by the end of the night! The Restaurant, opposite has dining for grown-ups and older kids but we didn't eat there. There is also a no-kids bar with big TVs and pool tables etc. Neither did we get a chance to try the well-reviewed Brasserie in the hotel which has 2AA Rosettes. So overall, there is plenty of choice for eating out plus, of course, there is the on-site farm shop if you prefer to cook in. In conclusion, Ribby Hall Village, which is just 3 hours south of Glasgow, (straight down the M6 and turn right at signs for Blackpool) is an ideal weekend location for families visiting the Blackpool Pleasure Beach. There's plenty to do on site, staff are friendly, the accommodation is clean and spacious and the food is good.

Your Child Should Be Able To Do When They Begin School by Sarah Butters
I
f your child starts ‘big school’ this September, it’s time to start preparing. Forget force feeding them phonics, this is about getting your child ready for the social challenges of school. The more prepared they are, the easier they will settle and the more they’ll get out of those early days. 1. Can they dress themselves? Imagine the scene. One teacher faced with thirty children and their coats. By the time each child is zipped up and wrapped up, playtime is over. If your child is able to go some way to helping, they may get some fresh air. If you can see buttons on trousers and skirts becoming a problem during the post PE change, invest in elasticated waistbands. These will also help during any ‘last minute’ toilet visits. Avoid tights in the early days - they can also lead to unnecessary bathroom accidents. With shoes, laces and buckles are a no-no. Stick to Velcro fastenings which your child can do themselves. 2. Are they used to sharing? Sharing is a difficult lesson for a child to learn, especially if they only start learning it at school. But it’s a vital lesson if you want your child to settle in and make friends easily. No one wants to play with the boy who refuses to take turns and share, and before long that child becomes isolated. Start to make a point of praising your pre-schooler for sharing his bag of figures or his last few sweets. 3. Can they use the toilet on their own? Reception classrooms usually have a toilet nearby but children are expected to use it on their own. That can mean less confident children avoid a visit until it’s too late. Encourage your child to begin taking toilet trips without you to build up their confidence. Remind them that hand washing is part of the ‘visit’. Beginning school toilet training now will mean fewer accidents in September.

4. Are they able to eat independently? Lunchtimes can be a real flashpoint in the early days of your child’s school life. Dinner halls are noisy places and can make a child feel overwhelmed. Make sure they arrive at school able to pick up and use a knife and fork. If they’re opting for a packed lunch, make sure they can open a yoghurt, put a straw in a juice box and unpeel a banana. With school a few months off, it may seem like the easier option to feed them, but it won’t help in the long run. Practice, however painful, makes perfect.
5. Are they able to recognise their name? If your child can recognise their name, they’ll be able to find their peg, identify their drawer in the classroom and find their cardigan if it gets misplaced. Starting school can make even the most confident child feel a little lost. If they can locate important places, it will make them feel more in control. 6. Can they use scissors? Teachers look for this in the early stages of Reception to evaluate dexterity. Get crafty over the next few months. 7. Do they understand discipline? It’s important your child understands what’s expected of them when they arrive at school. They need to know hitting, kicking, biting and hair pulling will not be tolerated. Not only will it bring your child to the attention of the head teacher for all the wrong reasons, but it will make your child unpopular with their classmates. Reputations earned in the early days of school tend to stick and can be hard to shake off. 8. Can they communicate with an adult? Giving your child the skills to communicate with their teacher means they will be able to have some control. How else will they ask to go to the toilet? If they don’t understand how to get the attention of an adult, how will they let their teacher know they don’t understand their work? A child who can communicate will get more out of the school day than a child who is unwilling to speak up. Encourage your child to ask and even practice with a raised hand at home to make sure they understand the most appropriate way of getting a grown-up’s attention. 9. Are they able to count? If your child is about to count up to 20, and count back from 10, this will give them a really good head start. Use some of their favourite toys or foods to make counting fun. Lay out 10 grapes and get them to eat them one by one, counting as they go. It will give them confidence and help them see learning as fun. Plus it’s a great way to get one of their 5 a day down them! 10. Can they follow simple instructions? The school day is full of instructions. Your child will be asked to put coats on pegs, bring packed lunches into classrooms and sit cross-legged on the carpet for circle time. If a child is used to following instructions, they will avoid being reprimanded. The more time a teacher dedicates to repeating instructions and encouraging co-operation, the less time there is for teaching. Start giving your child simple tasks – perhaps helping with the weekly shop or with some straight forward jobs around the house. It will prepare them for school life. I imagine most people’s list would include some of the following: criticism, new experiences, emotions, hormones, financial worries, achievements, things going well, conflict, security, friends and family. Psychologists have found that our sense of self begins to develop at around 18 months and is improved by having loving responsive caregivers who show us that we are valued and provide us with lots of positive interactions.
Childhood is the best time to build self-esteem, self-confidence and self-reliance. It is difficult to develop this later in life. The perception of ‘self’ needs to be laid down first as it provides the foundations that will help us to weather the storms ahead. A healthy self-esteem can help children to increase their selfconfidence so that: • The negative opinion of others will not crush them • They will learn from failure • They will respect others • They will find it easy to love others and learn how to look after and love themselves Most parents realise that doing everything for their child is not only exhausting but prevents a child from learning how to do things for themselves. Ultimately, by taking too much responsibility for your child you prevent them from learning the consequences of their own actions and slows down the process of building self-confidence...the child’s own sense of self-belief. It is no surprise then that few parents perform this challenging task and balancing act perfectly all of the time. Remember that trying to be the perfect parent doesn’t help us as parents and doesn’t benefit the child. It is better to be a ‘good-enough’ parent who does the following: • Sets boundaries for behaviour • Encourages children to make age-appropriate decisions • Allows children to learn from the consequences of their actions • Accepts and acknowledges their child’s feelings • Lets children do things for themselves and supports them to find solutions to problems • Recognises that adults, like children, can make mistakes The next time you’re tempted to beat yourself up following a less than perfect encounter with your child remember that although praise is a powerful tool for parents, non-verbal responses are just as important as words. “The infant needs to be able to discover her capacity to light up the mother’s face...for here is to be found the fundamental basis of self-esteem”.

Spotlight On... Monkey Drama Each issue we will be putting the ‘Spotlight on....’ one of our favourite clubs and classes. To kick us off we have selected Monkey Drama providing drama classes for the early years...
M
onkey Drama was created by Alana Myant, 33, while on Maternity Leave with her now 2 year old daughter Hanna. Alana decided to take the plunge into self-employment by creating something she had long thought about, which was combining her passion and expertise in Drama with her love for working with young children. Alana says, “Drama classes for the early years are a great way for children to develop their personal and social skills and to make sense of their world through imaginative play!” Monkey Drama started off back in October 2013 with public classes in Glasgow. The first class has gone from having 2 children to now having two full weekly classes. Due to popular demand, Alana is now bringing Monkey Drama to Edinburgh as of April 2014 with classes in Juniper Green and Merchiston! Public classes are for ages 2-5 years. Monkey Drama also now work in several nurseries throughout Glasgow and Edinburgh and have become a very popular choice for birthday parties!
Alana believes the popularity is due to the fact that the themes are different each week and kept a secret until the start of each class! The children can engage at their own level and the sessions are above all else, fun and creative! There are great props, characters, stories, problems to solve and skills to learn along the way! The children get a certificate at the end of each session to show what they have “Learned, Imagined and Explored”. Parents also enjoy watching the adventures unfold and the classes have a real family appeal as younger siblings can come along for free!
