Letter from the Ed How do you feel about planning your child's birthday party? It can seem overwhelming.... the thought of keeping of a house/hall full of small children happy and making sure that the birthday child is also having a wonderful time. Luckily, we have plenty of people in West London who can ease the stress, whether you are planning a big bash for the whole class and their siblings or just a lovely day out for a few family friends. Look through our listings and make a few calls. Ask for advice; the people featured on our pages have plenty of experience of what makes a really successful party. For those of you who have children of school age, May means time for exams. Having a child who has now gone through the school system from beginning to end, my only advice can be, "don't sweat the small stuff!" Children today constantly go from one test to another. At junior school, the emphasis should be on assessment to make sure the teaching is good and not on the child passing or failing. We will be back in July with a magazine full of summer activities. There's a little hint of it in our "Book now for the summer feature" for those of you who want to start a little early planning.

News & Views Carbon monoxide kills Have you got a carbon monoxide detector yet? If not, make sure you get one now. Lucy, who tragically lost her 7-year-old child to carbon monoxide poisoning, campaigns for parents to install CO detectors in their homes. A few months ago she told her good friend Christine, a mum of 4, to install one in her house as soon as possible. Christine took Lucy up on her advice and only days after she got a detector installed, it went off. A CO detector costs from as little as £7, and it could save your life, just like it saved Christine’s and her family’s. New figures reveal that over 650 people have died from carbon monoxide poisoning in the past 20 years. Now, a charity is calling for the introduction of public health warnings about the gas, as it is not only odourless and colourless but can kill in seconds. ‘Being a deadly gas which cannot be sensed by smell, taste, touch or hearing, it is vital that people are aware of the dangers and know the steps to take to reduce their risk of being poisoned,’ said Stephanie Trotter, president of CO-Gas Safety. ‘That is why we are calling for public warnings to be introduced, to advise families of the dangers and how to protect themselves.’ Reduce your risk of CO poisoning by having all appliances regularly maintained and chimneys regularly swept and checked. Ensure that all vents are clear and never take a barbecue or stove into any interior space such as a tent, boat, caravan or home, even if you think it has burned out. Share your stories This May sees the return of National Share-A-Story Month, an annual celebration of the power of storytelling and story sharing. Run by the Federation of Children’s Book Groups, Share-AStory Month is a fantastic opportunity to bring children and stories together, with a whole host of events running across the country. The theme for 2014 is ‘Imagination and Inventiveness’, celebrating with Dahl & Dahl and Puffin Publishers the 50th Anniversary of the publication of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Activities for children at Hammersmith and Fulham libraries. The library service in the borough has a huge range of activities going on for children including homework clubs, sessions with a dedicated Maths and English tutor, story time sessions, language classes as well as storytime, baby bounce and play sessions for toddlers. For example, children can attend • ‘Play Mandarin’ at Shepherds Bush Library on the second and fourth Fridays of every month at 10am where children can learn Mandarin through songs, stories and play. • Chatterbooks at Askew Library are reading groups for children aged 8-12. The aim is to inspire you to read and develop confidence in expressing your opinions as well as talk about books. WIFI to be banned in France for under 3's Did you know that in January 2014 the French Assembly voted in favour of a law to ban WIFI in all institutions for children under the age of 3 years old? The proposed bill aims to limit exposure to electromagnetic waves generated by wireless technologies – mobile phones, tablets, Wi-Fi. The French Assembly has insisted that cell phone manufacturers recommend the use of hand-free kits for every new purchase. Here in the UK the health impact of electromagnetic equipment remains controversial. In May 2011, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the World Health Organisation classified such equipment as “possibly carcinogenic.” So while the jury is still out and while we wait for our Government to catch up, why not take simple precautions at home? EDUCATION News The Gove revolution continues… … as the Education Secretary pledges an increase to Latin and Greek in state secondary schools, as well as suggesting that all secondary schools put their 13-year-olds forward to sit the Common Entrance Exam, in a move to give schools an insight into how their pupils are doing. ‘Since the last Labour government abolished key stage three tests for 14-year-olds, we have had no rigorous externally-set and marked measures of progress for students in the first five years of secondary school,’ Michael Gove said. ‘I want state schools to try out Common Entrance exams – giving them a chance to check how well they and their pupils are performing against some of the top schools around the world.’ He also encourages schools to stay open for up to 10 hours a day, allowing time for structured homework sessions but also for after-school sports matches, orchestra rehearsals and clubs. His plans received a mixed reception however, with Russell Hobby, general secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers saying, ‘We have no problem with schools staying open for longer provided most of those additional hours are used for extracurricular activities. We need to be clear on where the money will come from to fund the extra staffing required, given that teachers are already working a 48-hour week on average under the current arrangements.’ Christine Blower, general secretary of the National Union of Teachers, added, ‘The push for longer school days of up to 10 hours will be counterproductive for many children and young people. Primary school pupils in particular will find it very difficult to concentrate or even stay awake for such long periods.’

Small school sets a challenge to raise £15,000 for local charity Next year, Harvington Prep School will celebrate its 125th anniversary. Preparations are already underway for what will be a year of celebration at one of Ealing’s oldest schools. Plans for the celebration include a gala dinner, a party for the children and a theatrical production to be performed by Harvington pupils. In addition, pupils will be given the challenge of raising £125 each, (one pound for every year) through sponsored activities and the total raised, expected to be around the £15,000 mark, will be donated to a local charity or a deserving local child. Founded by the Watson sisters, Harvington opened in Gordon Road in 1890 before relocating to its current location on Castlebar Road, eight years later. One of the sisters, Miss Chrystabel Watson, had been trained by a German teacher, Fraulein Lebensdorf, and named the school Heidelberg College in honour of her birthplace. In 1915, it was felt that a German name was no longer appropriate due to the hostilities of World War I. On 5th July that year, the school was renamed Harvington and thus next year not only marks the school’s 125th anniversary but is also the centenary of the school in its current guise. Harvington has survived two world wars and has gone through many changes during its long history. Originally a boarding school, it later became a day school and then reinvented itself as an independent prep school in 2010. Many of the Harvington traditions have been retained, including the wearing of straw boaters in summer and shaking hands with the form teacher at the end of each day. www.harvingtonschool.com

Key Stage 2 SATs are changing in 2014 Changes have been made to the SATs that Year 6 children will be taking this year in order to make them fairer for all children. Instead of just focusing on what children know through one test, assessment will now be centred on the progress that children make throughout the school year and by teacher assessment. All children in Year 6 will be taking the test in English and Maths which cover Levels 3-5. Year Six children are expected to reach level 4 at the end of their primary school. Schools are required to administer the following levels 3-5 tests: • English reading • English grammar, punctuation and spelling • Mathematics Children who are consistently attaining above level 5 can also be entered for the Level 6 tests in English and Maths.

Test dates: The 2014 Key Stage 2 tests will take place from 12-16 May. The levels 3-5 tests must be taken before the corresponding level 6 tests on the scheduled day. Other changes to SATs in 2014 • A new format and timing (one hour) for the level 3-5 English reading test • A ban on calculators in the level 3-5 maths tests • The percentage of children achieving level 6 will be shown in school league tables for the first time • Teachers will be able to request extra © Dunnes Stores time for children with special educational needs based on their own observations, rather than having to provide evidence from a specialist professional • Teacher assessment in the KS2 SATs • Other subjects, including English speaking and listening, are assessed by teachers rather than by children taking a formal written test. This assessment data is then submitted to the DfE, and is subject to moderation. • Replacing the writing test given previously, your child’s teacher will assess their writing composition, so your child’s result for English writing will be a judgement of their work across year 6. Your child's grammar, punctuation and spelling skills will be assessed as part of their writing, but their creativity and writing style will also be evaluated. • Children’s progress, as well as their achievement, will be measured and reported on in school performance tables. • Teacher assessments will be passed on to secondary schools so they can be used in planning for year 7 teaching.

Pupils who are ill on the day of a KS2 SATs test will be able to sit it within a week.

Science sampling The biggest change for KS2 SATs for 2014 is that although there are no formal science SATs for all, ‘science sampling’ is being reintroduced. Under this system, 9,500 children – five children from 1,500 schools – will be randomly selected to take a science test. Schools that are selected will be notified by mid-May, and are legally obliged to participate if chosen. The science sampling test will comprise three papers, each of no more than 25 minutes, to be taken within a two-week period from Monday 2 June 2014. Results will only be published at a national level; neither schools nor parents will be given their children’s individual results, and they won’t be used in league tables. Science sampling will take place every two years.

A birthday party is a ritual of childhood and an event that’s remembered forever. So the pressure is on – how do you ensure success and survival (both your own and your home’s)? Joanna Moorhead guides you through what’s best, age by age.

0-3 There’s just one word that matters here: simplicity. Birthday parties for tinies can be marvellous, memorable affairs, but they don’t need to be elaborate or to involve much expense or entertainment or special props. In essence, you’re catering for the grown-ups as much as for the children – because at this stage, the adults will definitely stay (and you’re more than likely to have a few grandparents in the mix as well). Concentrate on creating a fun, easy, safe space for the children – a soft play space with plenty of toys strewn around is ideal – and make sure the adults are well catered-for: if they stay calm, the children will as well. If you want something with a bit of a theme, how about a teddy bears’ picnic? Make sure everyone remembers to take their favourite cuddlies home at the end though, or there will be tears at bedtime!

4-6 At this stage parties can be a bit more ambitious and a time when it is well worth investing in a great entertainer: they are experts, know how to crowd control while producing shrieks and honest laughs. However don’t assume that to put on a great bash you need to spend lots of money. At this age children can have loads of fun without a big outlay; later on, when they’re tweens and teens, you’ll be under pressure to shell out big-time, so don’t pre-empt that now. A party at home or in the local park can be huge fun; traditional party games will be popular, and if you want to push the boat out a bit consider investing in a bouncy castle; or if home really isn’t a possibility, a soft play centre will be hassle-free, if more expensive. Themed parties are great for this age group, and they actually make life simpler for the party organiser: a pirate theme is always popular, or sea creatures, or pick up on your child’s favourite book or TV programme. Dressing up is a big hit for this age group too. 8

Top tips for parties at any age H Think of an activity that will keep the kids busy as soon as they arrive and while they are waiting for the others. For young ones, a huge roll of white paper (available in craft shops or use lining for wallpaper) with the a birthday message that the guests can colour and decorate starts things off nicely. H A big birthday cake is lovely but sometimes gets wasted as children are given it when they already have had a plate full of grub. Why not give out cupcakes instead? We made a big long cupcake snake for years and put it on a plank of wood that we covered in silver foil. It made a stunning centrepiece for the table. H Party bags are always a dilemma. You know that half of it will go in the bin straight away unless the contents are really great. How about guests choosing their own contents from a big bowl of goodies by the front door. H If you are having an outdoor party then don’t forget to pack plenty of kitchen roll, wipes, spare clothes, a first aid kit, candles and matches. H Enlist the help of another adult to be chief photographer and use the pics to send out thank you notes.

Activities work a treat at this stage, whether you’re at home or in a church hall or at a park. For a popular and low-budget option, think about a baking party at home – weigh out all the ingredients before the children arrive, get them to mix and decorate them and then pop them in the oven to bake while you play a few party games (shortbread biscuits are easy peasy; have a range of cutters for exciting shapes).

Older children like going out to party. To keep the costs down, encourage a smaller number of guests – think about a trip to the seaside or to an exciting adventure playground they’ve not visited before, and remember that the journey can be as much fun as the activity at the end of it. If you don’t mind spending a bit more, a trip to a climbing wall, an ice rink, a bowling rink or a go-karting centre can be wonderful fun too. May/June 2014

Moving on…

Muddling through a house move

hen it comes to buying, selling and moving to a new family home, Murphy’s law applies – what can go wrong, will go wrong. Yet, with a little bit of preplanning (or, to be strictly honest, with some strategic militarystyle planning) it can go rather more smoothly than my muddled efforts would suggest. With the benefit of hindsight I have learnt rather a lot. For example: never have children in the house at the same time as viewers. I learnt this the hard way when my then 5-year-old daughter cheerily informed a potential buyer that our kitchen was so small that we couldn’t fit all the family in at the same time, and then proceeded to accompany her outside where she pointed out that the front garden was dangerous for children. (The garden sloped away from the house and there was a drop over the retaining wall to the pavement). Needless to say – that viewer never returned. I also once had removal men half way through loading up the entire contents of another house when I got a call from my solicitor to say our buyer had not exchanged contracts as scheduled. And, on that same ill-fated move, when the van had finally gone and I had loaded the children into the car, I couldn’t find the cat. Hours later with the cat found, duly caged and in the car, I discovered I had a puncture and faced the prospect of driving a 100 mile journey to our new home on an emergency tyre (the garages all being closed by then) until a kindly neighbour stepped in to the rescue. So with the benefit of all that has gone wrong on my moves – and some sage advice from fellow Families magazine editors - what can you do to make sure your house move goes without hitch?

Prepare the children

The average family moves 8 times in their lifetime. To date, I’ve clocked up a staggering 20 new addresses but, thankfully, only five of those have been with husband, children and pets. Moving home as a singleton with few belongings and a free storage facility back at home base is a breeze compared to moving lock, stock and barrel to an unfamiliar place with children in tow.

First, prepare the children. If they are very young don’t assume they understand what a house move is all about. As one mum recalls “We moved house when my son and daughter were 6 and 9 years old. Although we did talk with them about moving, it wasn't until they asked whether they could take their belongings with them that we realised we hadn't made it clear that we were only selling the building; they thought we were selling the house plus its contents.” A good way of preparing young children is to read stories about moving, for example Topsy and Tim Move House. If you do that when your own house is on the market, it gives your child time to become familiar with the idea before the time comes to move out. If you are moving within your local area and no school move is involved, it is easier than when you are moving to a totally new area. Older school age children are likely to be upset – and often angry - at the prospect of losing friends. Listen to their fears and be endlessly patient and positive about the move (however you are feeling yourself), and explain how they can keep in touch with old friends while making new ones. Children are very adaptable and the chances are they will settle in the new area and have firm friendships a lot sooner than you will, but they need to vent and they need your reassurance. A practical plan Once your house is sold you can breathe a sigh of relief that you no longer have to run around stuffing toys back in cupboards to make the house presentable for viewers, but then sit down with a cup of coffee and make a plan. The key to a smooth move is in the planning: Declutter – don’t move your junk from one house to another. Take the time between selling and moving to do a thorough clearout.

Quotes for removal companies – get several. They can vary hugely in price. Decide whether you are going to do your own packing or want the removal company to do it. It doesn’t cost a lot more to let the removal company do the packing and with their speed and efficiency it is often money well spent. If you are pregnant when moving, have to move in a hurry with jobs or for a house sale, or have loads of belongings, it is definitely recommended.

Change of address list – do this in advance and have your letters or e-mail sorted ready to go out before you move. It is not just day to day contacts you need to inform – you will also need to change address on TV licence, driving licence and vehicle reg. And, you need to contact pension providers from previous jobs, ISA savings providers and so on. Inevitably you will forget one crucial contact to notify so redirection of mail is essential.

Insurance – you need to make sure you have insurance on your new home from the day you move into it. Pets – they too can get stressed with moving house. Make a plan in advance to ease their transition. Helpful websites include www.dogstrust.org.uk and www.bluecross.org.uk

On the Day Utilities: Don’t forget to take utility readings before leaving the house Mobile phone: make sure your mobile is fully charged in case there are any last minute snags to sort out like getting keys from the estate agent. Essentials kit: One mum says: “The best advice we were given was to pack a separate box with the kettle tea/coffee milk, mugs etc in it so at least when we were in the midst of chaos we didn’t have to hunt to find the kettle.” I second that. You also win brownie points with the removal men who will be much more amenable if their thirst is quenched when you change your mind about where you want the wardrobe! Bedrooms – linen, blankies and cuddly toys: “The first thing we did when we got in our new house was to make the beds so later on when exhausted and tired we didn’t have to do it before falling into bed,” advises another Mum. You can also make sure any special sleep ‘blankies’ or cuddly toys are on your child’s bed waiting for them, and that a few familiar toys are unpacked from their own special box to make them feel at home. A toast: The final word in this piece goes to Families Leeds editor Sarah Butters who is about to move home for the second time in 6 months. “Packing the wine glasses somewhere handy is an absolute MUST.” When all does not go according to plan – and believe me I know all about this – this is sensible advice indeed.
