Ealing women on wheels Summer is the perfect time for cycling and Ealing Council invite all women to experience the fun of two wheels. By following #Ealingwow you will get access to a stream of information to help keep the little ones busy, healthy and most of all something you can all do as a family. Erika, a mother of two tells her story. “Cycling with the family for leisure or as a way to beat the traffic on the school run and stay fit can be a great way to get some family time, see the borough and have some fun.” Erika, who works in Ealing, has been cycling for over 20 years and says that can’t imagine getting about any other way but by bike. This is even true for the trip to hospital to have her first child. Sensing that he was on his way and with no other option available, Erika jumped on her bike and arrived just in time! Her husband followed with her hospital bag at a slightly more leisurely pace, 45 minutes later. Gabriel, now six, has been cycling since he was four and often joins his mum, dad and little brother on weekend bike rides. Trying to fit keeping healthy in around looking after two children can sometimes seem impossible. But by getting out and about on their bikes Erika and her husband stay fit and healthy and feel they are positive role models to their children. “The perception around cycling is that it’s unsafe especially for children to be on the roads and this is stopping families from getting out and about on their bikes. However with all the support available including, free cycle training sessions - especially those for families - and guided social rides, it makes it much easier. Give it a try.” If you would like information on family cycling in the borough, go to: www.ealing.gov.uk/wow By following them you will have the opportunity to: • Find out the latest about cycling events for the family • Training opportunities for new cyclists • Offers and discounts for cycle equipment • Cargo bike hire • Ask questions about cycling and have them answered by our cycling experts at: #Ealingwow

From Toddlers to Teens keeping ALL ages happy on holiday T

he summer holidays are just around the corner and with everyone doubting the weather forecast of 3 months of sun, there’s another factor to contend with - six weeks off school - for everyone. Spending 6 weeks in the sun with all the kids can offer up some amazing memories but as it approaches it can also feel rather daunting. Keeping everyone busy, happy and in one piece is a challenge for every family, especially if there are big age gaps. For many people the summer also means a family holiday… and however your get there it will be an adventure… good or bad!

Pre planning I know this isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but being organised will help make the holiday happier for everyone - now I don’t mean scheduled down to the last minute, but having maps to fall back on when mobile phones fail, and packing snacks and activities for little ones and a variety of musical choices for the discerning teen, will help regardless of how you plan to travel. Get everyone involved in the planning, from looking at budgets, to finding out what activities are on offer in the location you’re heading for. Variety Some families like going to the same place every year, this can help build independence for the children and everyone relaxes a little more, but it can also get repetitive - so make sure to pack new games for the family, choose different walking trails and get involved in different sports. Choose to visit different restaurant or sample different local cuisines - variety after all is the spice of life! If you choose a new location

4

annually, get everyone’s input on possible locations and narrow things down together - if they were part of the overall decision, they’re less likely to complain that they ended up camping for a week over a Disney vacation. Challenges Set goals and challenges as a family. If you all like swimming, find out if there are any remote locations you can swim to an explore, or set out to climb to the highest peaks in the area - or if your children are more interested in history, find out about a historical event and see what you can discover. Choices Let everyone be involved in making choices on holiday. Give them options you know you’re happy with but by letting everyone make some of their choices, they start to feel like it’s their holiday too. If you

have children of vary ages, make sure they each feel they have equal input, and an equal number of activities that they will enjoy. This might mean that each child has a day to plan, or number of activities they can choose over the length of your holiday. Split up Don’t be afraid to split off into different groups so that everyone can have fun - ie if you hit an amusement park and there are height restrictions, everyone will have a better day if they can spend some time doing the things they are allowed to do. If you have a little one who is an early riser, and a teen who likes to sleep in - plan activities in the morning that are just right for the little one, spend afternoons doing something as a family and find a teen friendly music venue or campfire to attend - this may mean chan-

nelling your inner teen - but we know you’ll be up for the challenge. Down time Not every minute needs to be planned, make sure everyone has a quiet activity like reading or drawing that they can do on their own. If the tensions start rising - call for quiet time and let the dust settle before you suggest a rousing game of Monopoly (assuming it’s raining) or hide and seek! Enjoy! Remember to relax and enjoy! Have fun together, get to know something new about one another and forget about real life for a moment - leave the phones and emails at home and let holidays be holidays! Summer Confidence & Resilience Courses

We all want children to become independent individuals who find genuine fulfilment in whatever they do in their lives. As a result, characteristics like ‘confidence’ and ‘resilience’ are desirable and they have become educational buzzwords. But how can we really develop these characteristics in young people? Our programmes help children to present themselves effectively and react positively to pressure. It will teach children to value collaboration and imagination, to be unafraid of complex challenges and to develop a positive and robust approach to setbacks. Our Summer Confidence & Resilience Courses are for Years 3 & 4 and Years 5-7 from July 18-22 (10am-3pm) in Wimbledon, Pimlico and Hampstead and from Aug 30-Sept 2 in Clapham, Chelsea and Marylebone. Price for July 18-22 is £395. Price for Aug 30-Sept 2 is £325. Book before July 1st to avoid paying VAT!

Starting primary school the easy way

Starting primary school is a major milestone in your little one’s childhood - and indeed in your life too. So how can you ease them into this big change and limit the potential for tears on the first day? Here are a few tips to help you prepare your little one

14

for their very first day at “big school”… Help your child get used to the idea of school In the months approaching the big day, read books about going to school together - Janet Ahlberg’s Starting School or Lauren

Child’s I am Absolutely Too Small for School are ideal. This will introduce them to what goes on and let you discuss school together, answering any questions your child might have.

point out positive features, such as the playground equipment.

Build familiarity with their new school Attending settling-in sessions is invaluable to build familiarity and demystify what school is all about. They’ll let your little one meet their teachers, see the classroom, dinner hall and loos, and at least a few prospective classmates.

Don’t worry about reading, writing and maths beforehand Many parents are concerned that their child can’t recognise letters or count before they begin school but remember this is what they’ll be going there to learn - teachers don’t expect any prior knowledge. Focus instead on non-academic ‘school ready’ skills: things like going to the loo independently and cleaning themselves afterwards, putting their own coat on and eating using cutlery. Being able to listen, sit still, share and follow instructions will make school life easier too.

Meanwhile, if you’re driving or walking past the school,

The day or two before the big day…

Talk too about your own happy school memories or encourage an older sibling or friend to discuss the things they enjoy at their primary school.

Highlight the things they’re excited about, such as a toy that caught their eye in the reception classroom, or seeing the lovely teacher or their friend from nursery again. Pre-empt their anxieties too - these can be little things, for example, how to let the teacher know if they need the loo, or what happens if they don’t like any of the lunch options. Double check where you are meant to be and when on the first day and what your child needs to bring with them. If you’ll be driving, remember to work out where you’ll park - mum or dad spending 30 minutes getting flustered because you’re late and can’t find a space will not create a relaxed mood for day one. The night before… Ease the morning rush by getting everything ready now - uniform laid out, packed lunch made (if they aren’t having school lunches) and school bag packed. Help the first morning run smoothly Getting kids from bedroom to classroom on time can be challenging even for the most organised parents. Minimise stress (and how many times you have to say ‘hurry up’) by putting away any toys or turning off screens that are too distracting. Be clear with your child about what needs doing when and keep any messy eaters in PJs until breakfast is over, to avoid ruining that pristine first-day uniform.

July/August 2016

It’s time to go in… We all want that perfect first day photo but don't make them late - and irritable - with endless attempts to get it. Stringing out your goodbyes for ages can end in tears that otherwise wouldn't happen simply remind them to have fun and that you'll be there to collect them later and give them a hug. If they’re nervous or unsure, start a small ritual, perhaps putting a ‘kiss’ in their pocket for them to grab later if they’re missing you. Don’t forget the tissues There’s a time and a place for concealing your own feelings from your children and if you’re upset or anxious, this is one of them! Try your best to wait until you’re out of sight before sobbing, otherwise you could confuse or upset your child unnecessarily. Once they’ve gone in, if the waterworks do roll, rest assured you probably won’t be the only one, so don’t worry about what other parents or teachers think! By Liat Hughes Joshi

Tips for flying with young children* Will you be travelling abroad with your young children this year?

Here are 15 tips for a stress-free journey...

*Taken from: http://www.emmasdiary.co.uk/lifestyle/holidays-and-travel/holiday-essentials/flying-with-children

2. Check if your airport has a dedicated crèche. Some are equipped with toys, books and rest rooms.

and landing as the sucking motion will help equalise the pressure in the ears (often an uncomfortable cause of babies crying on flights). 8. Under-twos usually travel free as long as they sit on a parent’s lap for the entire flight. If your budget will stretch to it maybe pay the extra fare so you have an extra seat.

3. Ask if you can take your buggy to the flight’s gate so your little one will have somewhere familiar to nap if your flight is delayed.

9. A seat near the bulkhead (where there is a division or toilet in front) may have a bit of extra room, so your toddler could play on the floor.

4. Pack plenty of wet wipes in your handbag.

10. Take plenty of baby food and mini snacks with you.

1. Inform the airline when you book your flight that you have young children and take advantage of all the extra help they can offer parents.

5. Get your children used to drinking room temperature drinks as it can be difficult to keep bottles cool or warm them up at the airport. 6. Pre-book children's meals on flights. They get served first and you'll avoid the endless wait for food. 7. Breastfeed your baby, or have a drink ready for an older child when the flight is taking off

16

11. Try to time your child’s day so they will have a nap on the flight. Some airlines provide pillows and blankets. 12. Dress children in layers as they can get too warm on a flight - or too cold if the air conditioning is on full blast. 13. Take non-battery toys and games with you

Families West PO Box 32231 London W5 1JR

like good old fashioned colouring books. 14. Let your child have their own carry-on bag of small games and treats. 15. Keep an eye on your child’s feet to make sure the seat in front doesn't get kicked. But most of all; try to keep calm and enjoy yourself… it is your well-earned holiday too!

Working from home with kids... I

t’s 1pm; Johnny’s had his nap, both children are fed, you’ve picked at their leftovers - time to put your feet up. Or not, if you’ve opted to work from home!

This may be your regular working pattern, or you may have negotiated flexible working terms for the summer holidays as many people are being granted permission to work from home, allowing them more flexibility and a solution to the ever growing costs of childcare. Working from home while watching the children, works well for some people; however, it’s not ideal for everyone. You may need to try it for your self and decide if: A) You CAN work well from home - not everyone does! B) The ages and dispositions of your children are conducive to working from home - not all of them are! C) You are productive - again, not everyone is productive away from their desk, but others are more so! For many employers, the notion of working a strict 9 to 5 has changed, and they are looking for output volumes rather than ‘face time’ - not the iPhone app; rather, the amount of time you spend in front of your employer. You may find that your employer is happy to accommodate an altered working pattern over the summer rather than have you off for long periods of time. There will be stages in your child’s development that allow you more time to focus on the tasks at hand, and other stages that they need much more of your time and attention. The summer months can prove difficult, especially if the weather is nice and the kids want to be outside. In the long run, you will have to decide if combining work and childcare works for you and then find a way to implement it. From our experience working with

July/August 2016

mums and dads who combine work with childcare, we have a few suggestions... Schedule your time: Remember you are doing two jobs, so schedule things accordingly. If you have small children about the place, things will take longer to complete so set realistic deadlines to avoid disappointing your boss and letting down your team. Just as you have set hours in the office, designate set hours in the day that you are going to dedicate to work, give yourself built in breaks depending on the age and needs of your child. It may take your child a short time to get used to a routine and it may take you even longer but it’s important to develop a working routine that you can stick to. Think about when they need to be fed, when they need a nap or when they are energetic, and build your day around that schedule. For example, schedule telephone calls during nap times and block out feeding time if they are on solids. If you’re breastfeeding, you might find you’re proficient at multi-tasking and you can tackle your inbox – or you might decide that it’s you and baby time. If you’re working on something that needs total concentration, it might mean scheduling in a period of time in the evenings when you can focus and your partner is home to handle any child-related emergencies. And make sure you schedule enough time at the park to tire the little ones out for a few hours in the afternoon. When it comes to your child, remember that spending time entertaining themselves is not a bad thing: in fact, it can be a very good thing. All of these decisions are up to you. No two people will feel exactly the same - so - step back, assess the situation and determine what works for you. Finding childcare Use your parent networks and if you

don’t have one, it’s time to start building! Trading children for a few hours is a brilliant way of having an afternoon of quiet time to focus on the task at hand. The other parent will be happy to help, especially if they know they can call on you when they need a hand. This is easier as your children get older. If they are still quite young, you might need to find someone flexible enough to come to your home. Know who you can call in an emergency and who you need to make plans with in advance, and ALWAYS reciprocate - you don’t want the relationships to be one sided. Having part time childcare might be part of your plan, be it an Au Pair who is in the home with you – attending to your child while you work - or a family member who takes your child a few hours a day. Even if you have family who can step in in an emergency, have a back-up plan in place for when you have a last minute meeting, or an outstanding deadline. Things don’t always run smoothly but if you prepare for worst case scenarios, then every day is a lot less bumpy! Have Emergencychildcare.co.uk in your SOS contact list. Be Honest Be honest with yourself and those you work with. Once you’ve got a schedule that works - explain it to your boss or line manager – let them know that you’ve put time and effort into finding a way for this to work for both of you. If you’ve scheduled a call and your child wakes up, don’t try to pretend you’re in the office - tell them you’re working from home and Johnny has woken up early. Try to carry on with the call - however, if the situation becomes too much, ask to rearrange the call. It will be more productive for everyone. When your child is old enough, explain to them that Mummy is

Families West PO Box 32231 London W5 1JR

working, or that mummy needs to make a telephone call. Give them a task and explain that you’ll engage with them once the call is over. A word of advice - this won’t happen right away and you need to remember to go back to them every time you’re off the phone. Essentially, you’re training them to understand the times when you are available and when they need to entertain themselves. Don’t forget your conversations at home, be honest about how you are feeling. Are you coping, or do you need help? What would help lighten the load? Remember only you know how you’re managing - don’t expect others to be able to read your mind. Remove the roadblocks Make sure you have an area of your home that you can set up as an office - as your children get older, it will be easier to explain that Mummy is working if they associate you working with a particular location - even if it is a corner of the sitting room. Setting up your office in a location where you can glance up at the room and observe your child will allow you to work with the knowledge that you’ve got an eye on the situation. Before you start working from home, think long and hard about everything you’ll need. How do you access your company server? Have you set up a VPN to your office? Do you have the right equipment, do you need to provide it or does your company? Is your software upgraded? Will you have an office mobile or are you expected to use your home telephone? The more you’ve thought of in advance, the more likely it will be smooth sailing when the day comes. by Kristen Harding From Tinies www.tinies.com The UK’s leading childcare agency.
