Get planting An innovative Wandsworth-based business has teamed up with a local nursery to get children gardening. Natural Urban Gardeners hosted a Plant a Daffodil morning with children from Number1Daycare in Earlsfield, with everyone given their own pot which they will learn to take care of at the nursery, and when spring arrives and the daffodils bloom each child can take their pot home and plant it straight into the ground. Could you foster? Merton Council calls all parents of children who have left home for university or moved into their own home, to consider fostering a child. The council’s fostering team are encouraging parents who may be missing having their home full of activity and liveliness to get in touch and discuss the possibility of providing a loving and safe home to a young person who needs that stability. ‘Many parents are at that stage in life when their own children are becoming more independent and are fleeing the nest,’ said Merton Council’s cabinet member for children’s services Councillor Maxi Martin. ‘All their invaluable experience of nurturing their children is vital to caring for other children too. Fostering can be a really rewarding experience, especially at a time when the house is feeling empty.’ They are also interested in parents who still have a full household though! New playground on the cards Wandsworth Council has secured funding to refurbish the toddlers’ playground in Upper Tooting Park. The playground will include new equipment such as a double-decker bus climbing frame, play table with chute, frog seat and a totem pole. Slow zone in Earlsfield? Residents in Earlsfield are being asked if they would like a new 20mph speed limit in their streets. The council is consulting people after receiving petitions from local residents calling for lower speed limits outside their homes, including Franche Court Road, Burmester Road and Aldren Road. ‘People residing in this part of Earlsfield have signed petitions asking for lower speed limits,’ said Transport spokesman Cllr Jonathan Cook. ‘As a result we are asking all the households in this area if they support the idea.’ Highways engineers recently completed the installation of 20mph limits across large parts of Balham and Tooting following a ballot of local people, while work is now underway on lowering speed limits in 11 other residential areas across Wandsworth. Grand re-opening Five of Wandsworth’s leisure centres have re-opened with aplomb after a £3.5m refurbishment project. Battersea’s Latchmere Leisure Centre has had its fitness suite extended and changing rooms refurbished, while at Putney Leisure Centre the village change area has been modernised and a new sauna installed. Balham Leisure Centre has new poolside sauna and steam rooms, plus improvements to the changing rooms, while both Tooting and the Wandle have been remodeled and improved. Royal Borough flourishes Kensington and Chelsea have scooped a clutch of awards in the 2015 London in Bloom Awards, recognising efforts made to green the Capital. Five of the borough’s parks were awarded gold status and three received silver gilt awards, including Holland Park, Kensington Memorial Park, Little Wormwood Scrubs, Westfield Park, and Emslie Hornimans Pleasance. The borough also won the Capital’s Biodiversity Award thanks to the great work by the team at the Holland Park Ecology Centre and the impressive wildlife garden at the Natural History Museum. ‘Hats off to all concerned,’ said Cllr Tim Ahern, the Royal Borough’s Cabinet Member for the Environment. ‘It is a tremendous achievement for such a small, densely populated borough and we are determined to continue our work to green the borough and the Capital.’ Congratulations from us all! : rbkc.gov.uk

Get their eyes tested New research reveals that almost 6 in 10 parents are unaware that their children need to have an eye test at least every two years. The Association of British Dispensing Opticians stresses the importance of ensuring children get their eyes tested from a young age. ‘It’s never too soon to get your child’s eyes tested,’ said Jo Holmes, Dispensing Optician. ‘Children can have an eye test before they learn to read, and the sooner some eye problems are picked up, the easier it is to treat them.’ Pop into your local opticians and book your appointment now.

Childcare and pregnancy news Do you coo? Babies learn different aspects of language from mum or dad. A study has shown that mums are more likely to coo and use non-word based language with babies. Dads are more likely to talk in ‘proper’ language. Surprisingly, both approaches are good for your baby’s development and have a role to play in how babies learn language. A team at Washington State University attached microphones to parents of pre-school children and recorded verbal exchanges with their children, using speech recognition software to analyse results. They believe the way women speak to children – using high pitched sounds and cooing to them – promotes bonding, while the more adult speech of dads gives them a bridge to adult life. Professor Mark VanDam, who led the research, said: “The parents are complementary to their children’s language learning.” He added: “this isn’t a bad thing at all, it’s not a failing of the fathers.”

Drinking in pregnancy still controversial Decades after health professionals warned about the dangers of drinking alcohol in pregnancy, there is still controversy over whether it’s safe to drink during pregnancy, and if so, how much. Current NHS guidelines say that women should avoid drinking in pregnancy. However, they also say “if you do opt to have a drink, you should stick to no more than one or two units of alcohol (equivalent to one or two small glasses of wine) once or twice a week to minimize the risk to your baby.” There has been a new discussion in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), in which two experts say that avoiding alcohol altogether is the only advice that should be given to mums-to-be. Retired paediatrician Mary Mather and doctoral research fellow in obstetric medicine at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ NHS Trust, Kate Wiles, say that guidelines are inconsistent and that many countries in the world advise that pregnant women do not drink at all. They say in the BMJ that drinking can lead to serious health problems including foetal alcohol syndrome, mental retardation, delayed development and behaviour problems. It can also cause low birth weight, which in turn can lead to other health problems in babies. However, consultant and senior lecturer Patrick O’Brien at University College London, says that while there is no guarantee that a lower limit is safe, there is also no evidence that drinking small amounts of alcohol after the first 12 weeks of pregnancy is harmful to babies.

Paracetamol use ‘may harm male foetus’ Commonly used drug associated with low testosterone Paracetamol could have an adverse effect on developing male babies. A Professor at the MRC Centre for Reproductive Health at the University of Edinburgh has said that the use of paracetamol for a week or more could lower a baby boy’s testosterone levels while in the womb. Doctors recommend that women should take the lowest possible dose and take it for as short a time as possible. If they have pain or fever, these can be serious in pregnancy, so it is best they talk to their GP.

New development checks Parents are to get a complete picture of their child’s development at the age of two, as part of new reforms to help families. With over £2million pledged to support joined-up checks on education and health development, parents will now have a better picture of their child’s progress at this early stage. ‘No parent should be left in the dark about their child’s development,’ said Childcare Minister Sam Gyimah. ‘There should be an accessible check for all at the age of two, which is a pressure point where issues such as speech delay and behavioural problems begin to appear. This will mean more families can get valuable information in a more convenient way.’ The Integrated Review is available to children between 24 and 30 months old. Education Secretary calls for schools to provide childcare Education Secretary Nicky Morgan has said that schools should take “reasonable steps” to provide childcare for the whole length of the working day during term time and the school holidays too. As part of this move, parents are to be given the right to request that their children’s schools put this care structure into place. However, the funding for this has not been agreed. Head teachers have said that this idea would have to be looked at “extremely carefully to ensure it is not just a popular gimmick.” Russell Hobby, general secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers, has responded to say that while giving care for children while parents are working is a good idea, there are several reasons to be wary of the Government’s promise. Budget cuts and recruitment issues are just two of the reasons why schools might not be able to provide care from early in the day until after parents finish work. “Extending provision beyond 38 weeks, providing care outside of term time, can also prove very difficult for schools because of staffing and a lack of private provision,” said Mr Hobby. He continued: “Parents can ask but the government must guarantee that a school's decision is respected. Otherwise, it is merely going to provoke conflict between schools and their communities and would undermine the decisionmaking of head teachers.”

Dalai Lama drops in at Newton Prep

When a 17-year-old student raised the issue of not a single women featuring among the 63 composers studied for her A-level Music, she started a national debate. This went on to spur Streatham & Clapham High School to host events with two inspirational women who are leaders in their fields. Wasfi Kani OBE, cofounder and conductor of Grange Park Opera, was guest speaker at SCHS's Speech Day, entertaining and inspiring the girls as she talked of why opera is relevant today, emphasizing the importance of hard work and describing how she had worked vigorously to combat assumptions and prejudices. SCHS also welcomed sportswoman Mikaela Austin to its Sports Honours Dinner where Mikaela spoke about how, when at the very top of her game as a Surrey Storm Netball Champion, she suffered injury that threatened her career. She inspired the girls with her passion for her sport and her grit and determination to overcome injury and return to playing at the highest level. Go girls! Awards keep coming! The £40m redesign and refurbishment of Tooting’s Burntwood School has been honoured in yet another prestigious architecture and urban design competition. The popular girls school has been awarded a top prize in the 2015 New London Architecture (NLA) Awards, after being extensively remodelled and rebuilt as part of an investment in education in the borough. The school’s new-look campus now boasts four brand new teaching blocks, a new performing arts centre and a sports hall. An IT learning centre and new state-of-the-art science laboratories are an extra addition and adds to its reputation as a centre of excellence for science. The changes have allowed the school to cater for an additional 250 pupils, including an expanded sixth form of up to 400 students. It's not every day that the Dalai Lama drops into school. On Friday 18th September 2015, Newton Prep was delighted to welcome His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Williams, to the school for the children's conference day of their joint initiative, Inspiring Dialogue. Children from schools, youth groups, theatre clubs and church organisations across London came to Newton Prep for a conference in which they - along with 100 Newton Prep children from Years 6, 7 & 8 - explored their hopes and fears for the future. “Inspiring dialogues with children and young people is an initiative sponsored by Inspire Dialogue Foundation,” said co-founder Cameron Taylor. “The aim of the Foundation is to bring people together that wouldn’t normally otherwise meet, and to inspire inter-generational, inter- disciplinary, inclusive dialogue. This autumn prospective parents were invited to meet teaching staff at the new Putney primary school, when Oasis Community Learning threw open its doors and hosted a drop-in session. The education charity will be managing the new Putney primary and has appointed Di Morgan as the school’s executive principal. Marina and Paul provide respite care “About 13 years ago, we decided we wanted to do something to help others in the community as a family. Our children were 5 and 12 years old and we both worked full time, so we felt respite care was something we could manage and enjoy. We came across Family Link, a service provided by Wandsworth Council for children with disabilities and we have been involved with them since. It has been great in many ways: getting to know the children and their families and the challenges they face everyday; opening up to a whole new world of understanding disabilities and learning about them; plus we have seen our children grow up more aware of other people's needs and well rounded as a result. Beverley supported a family over a period of 14 months “I support a young family consisting of mum, dad and five children ranging in ages from 6 months to 9 years old. Mum recovers from a traumatic birth, has to cope with depression, chronic back pain, overcrowding and the daily demands of the children. The challenges encountered so far have been with the 2 year old as he does not sleep well at night often keeping mum up late, we are working towards them becoming a little more independent. Likewise, as the younger children can be demanding there is little time to speak to mum about her main issues. Again, we are looking at ways to address this. I really enjoy visiting my family and feel that they are benefiting from the practical and emotional support given. The training and preparation given at Home Start really prepares you for dealing with the issues encountered with the family.”

Jenny supported a Lambeth family for almost two years “I have really enjoyed my time with Home-Start and found it an invaluable experience. The initial training was excellent and prepared me well for what would be expected of me when I went to see my families. It was not only useful; it also gave me a lot of confidence. I was a full time mother at home for a number of years, and not been “back to work”. Building on the confidence I felt as a volunteer, it further helped me get back into full time employment, which can be quite daunting after so long away. I was able to put the work I have done with Home Start on my CV, as well as provide a reference. Providing a service like this, especially one that provides a volunteer “mum” and not someone “official” or “professional” which might be too threatening, is a lifeline to people who, often through no fault of their own, just need a helping hand through a difficult time. Someone coming round just a few hours a week with a smile, a listening ear, a pair of hands and an ability to handle children can make all the difference to a parent or family. It can help them cope on a daily basis as well as raise hope for the future. I have been very proud to carry a pair of Home-Start wings upon my shoulders … and … as I am now leaving to start my new career … I now proudly pass them on to another Angel who can use them to wrap around another family. Emily helps children read in schools “It all started when my son had a little friend who was struggling at school. He was clearly not being supported by his family, who had troubles of their own to deal with. I wanted to help but didn’t know how. I contacted the school and asked whether they had some sort of official scheme. They did. I asked to be involved, got trained, checked up etc and started working with children on a one-to-one basis. I work with three children and give them 30 minutes each, the emphasis being on having fun. I saw the children’s self-confidence increase as well as their self-esteem. I enjoyed this immensely. I thoroughly recommend it. I think I received more out of the experience than I was expecting to. For me it sort of makes the world right again.”

Charlotte gives her money away In 2005 Charlotte Grobien, a Putney resident, founded a company called Give It Away, developing and building property. The extraordinary thing about her company is that they undertake projects whose total profits are given away to children and young people in need. Indeed her aim is “to make a difference to the lives of young people living with injury, disability, disadvantaged circumstances or who lack social or educational opportunities for their future.” So why does she give 100% of her profits away? She told us: “I do work hard but it is about what I receive back when I give that money away. Knowing that the funds are making a positive difference to many young lives is very rewarding. I always make a point of going to see who my money is benefitting, it’s more effort but I get to see the smile of the child who has received his new wheelchair and the joy on his parents’ faces. It makes me so happy. It is about what I receive back. It’s not about writing the cheque, it’s about seeing what joy can my money bring.” : give-it-away.co.uk

Health and wellbeing After 25 years of writing for families and a keen interest in alternative health, I had never come across needle-free acupuncture, so there, enjoy, I found this case study fascinating! Ed.

No pain—much gain: needle-free acupuncture for children Q: What was the problem or condition treated? A: Katy, a 13-year-old teenager, is passionate about riding but at the same time highly allergic to horses. It was always the same pattern. At first, Katy started sneezing 5-10 minutes after being in contact with horses. The sneezing got progressively worse; her eyes started itching, then watering profusely and puffing up within 30 minutes. Katy took antihistamines before each riding lesson but the medication made her very drowsy and impacted her concentration when finishing school homework in the evening. Like Katy, many children nowadays suffer from a wide range of allergies and parents often feel lost for alternatives to antihistamine medication. Q: What therapy was used and how long for? A: I treated Katy with Shonishin Acupuncture. Shonishin is a unique form of acupuncture that was developed 250 years ago in Japan to treat babies and children. Derived from Traditional Chinese Medicine Shonishin is a needle-free acupuncture therapy that uses specialised instruments to be pressed, rubbed, tapped or scraped on the skin of a child to provide different kinds of gentle stimulation. After treating Katy once a week for a month she could go horse riding without any medication. She only needed two monthly follow-up treatments to keep her symptom free. Q: Patient feedback A: “I had never considered Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to treat Katy’s allergies. But after Britta treated me very successfully for insomnia, my husband and I agreed to give it a try. Choking

– how to help a choking child

Recently a 2 year old boy died after choking on a grape. This incredibly sad story has highlighted the need for more people to learn First Aid. Prompt and appropriate First Aid saves lives. Babies and young children are prone to putting small objects in their mouth. To prevent choking keep small objects out of reach, cut up food into very small pieces and supervise children while they’re eating, especially if they are under five years old. Choking is frightening and difficult to know how to help. If they are coughing, see if they can cough the obstruction up themselves. If they are struggling to breathe and unable to make a sound – their airway is blocked and they need help fast!

• If the blockage hasn’t cleared after five blows, the next stage is an abdominal thrust/Heimlich manoeuvre: • Stand behind the child and place one hand in a fist under their rib cage. Use the other hand to pull up and under in a J shaped motion to dislodge the obstruction. Perform abdominal thrusts up to 5 times, checking each time to see if the obstruction has cleared. Anyone who has received abdominal thrusts must be seen by a doctor. • If the child is still choking, call 999 and alternate five back blows and five abdominal thrusts until emergency help arrives. If at any point the child becomes unconscious, commence CPR. If the child has been given abdominal thrusts or chest thrusts, they should always be checked by a medical professional

When the heavens do open, you’ll need some ideas to keep your little ones occupied — and you on the right side of sanity.

Create a rainy day jar Get board! Whether you’re a Jedi at Jenga or a master Monopoly player, there’s nothing like a giant board games tournament to pass the time. No one in the Butters household will ever forget the day a game of Battleships descended into an actual World War. And if I’m to be honest, I’ve never quite got over being beaten by my children at Scrabble after they came up with ‘zumba’ on a triple word score. However this is a chance to encourage your family to forget the iPads and X Boxes of today and remember the fun you can have with three dimensional people.

Take a dip Grab your swimsuit and head to your local leisure centre. News that half of primary school children can’t swim the length of a pool should be a wake up call for all parents. Did you know five of Wandsworth’s leisure centres have reopened after a £3.5m refurbishment? An independent review has recently graded the centres as excellent, putting them amongst the top scoring centres in the UK. Battersea’s Latchmere Leisure Centre remains a firm favourite because of the ‘elephant slide’ and the wave machine complete with refurbished changing rooms, while at Putney Leisure Centre the village change area has been modernised and a new sauna installed. Some also have creches, a soft play area and a café .. enough said no more excuses.

Has your child ever asked to do something that you’ve not had the time for? Maybe it’s baking a batch of biscuits, building some Lego they’ve had since their birthday or showing you a dance routine they’ve created. Whenever time is against you, get your child to write the idea on a piece of paper and pop it in the Rainy Day Jar. It means you can reach into it for ideas as soon as you hear the words “It’s raining!”

Trampolining Who doesn’t love bouncing? If your kids are ruining the bed springs, it’s time to enroll them in a trampolining class. Some centres will teach very young children, using large crash mats around the trampoline for safety. Climbing Climbing walls are very popular now and even small children can tackle lower ‘cliffs’ with good supervision. Check that your chosen venue has plenty of staff on hand to keep little ones from attempting too much and that there is safety equipment such as safety harnesses and helmets that will fit your child. Rock climbing builds skills such as teamwork, self-confidence, motivation, trust and better fitness levels. It can also help children to cope with stress and fears. Hide and seek Nothing beats a good play of hide and seek, go on parents you should take part too! With slightly older children try playing in the dark, it is thrilling.

Dressing up Dressing up is a fantastic way to kill time usefully: there’s the choosing of the outfit, the making of swords or hats out of recycled items perhaps, make up and hair to do and then the story telling. Get them to prepare a show for the family, grand parents? With a bit of help from you with the right accessories, food, lighting etc you might even be lucky enough to stretch the activity over few afternoons! Use wet weather time to free your children’s imagination…

Learn how to hoist the flags, brace the yards, coil the ropes and tie knots, and as night falls an astronomer from the Royal Observatory will point out the stars and planets in the sky above. This month, be inspired by elements of Cutty Sark to help create a colourful Indian rangoli pattern in Rangoli Patterns, 7-8 November, 11.30am-1.30pm and 2-4pm. Or discover the cargoes that she carried around the world and make your own beautiful Christmas decoration to celebrate the festive season, 5-6 December, 11.30am-1.30pm and 2-4pm, all ages. Admission is £13.50 for adults (£11.50 concessions) and £7 for children aged 5-15. Family tickets are £24 (1 adult and 2 children) or £35 (2 adults and up to 2 children). Open 10am-5pm. Time to go? The last surviving tea clipper and the fastest and greatest of her time, Cutty Sark has reopened in all her glory. Venture aboard and beneath one of the world’s most famous ships, marvel as you balance a 963-tonne national treasure on just one hand and walk along the decks and imagine the merchant seamen who sailed her over a century ago. The ship has been raised over three metres allowing visitors the jaw-dropping experience of walking underneath a 19th-century sailing ship. Cutty Sark runs a series of family events throughout the year, from Toddler Time to Curators Tours and everything in between, plus specials such as meeting Norman the hawk in Hawk Talk, celebrating Ship’s Birthday, making your own Tea Treasure Chests or Christmas decorations in Cutty Sark Christmas. Family activities are free with entry.
