Grammar school shake-up
Over 50% of state grammar schools are planning serious changes to their admissions policies in order to attract pupils from more disadvantaged backgrounds, according to the Grammar School Heads Association. 30 of the country’s 164 selective schools have already agreed the move, with another 58 planning to do so shortly, following a report from education charity the Sutton Trust which said that grammar schools were being monopolised by students from wealthier homes. Michael Wilshaw, chief schools inspector, said they were ‘stuffed full’ of middle class children and so failed to improve social mobility. Under these new changes many grammar schools will reserve places specifically for pupils from poorer homes who pass the 11plus. Barry Sindall, chief executive of the GSHA, added that the new admissions rules would not mean a reduction in the number of places for children from better off homes. These changes follow on from Schools Minister David Laws revealing that the Government is involved in talks with grammar school heads to make 11-plus tests less ‘coachable’, to avoid middle class parents gaining an advantage through being able to afford private tutoring.

Children and Families Act A landmark Act comes into law this summer giving greater protection to vulnerable children, better support for children whose parents are separating and help for parents to balance work and family life. It will also help children with Special Educational Needs and disabilities, while ensuring vital changes to the adoption system meaning more children who need loving homes are placed faster. The Act will also make it easier for families to access more flexible childcare, while making amendments to the law to protect children in cars from the dangers of second-hand smoke, and giving parents new options to share parental leave following the birth of a baby. Possibly the most interesting change is that from this June every employee across the country will be granted the right to request flexible working hours, with a duty on employers to consider requests in a ‘reasonable’ manner. ‘Current workplace arrangements have not kept up with the times,’ said Jenny Willott, Employment Relations Minister. ‘By enabling any employee to request to work flexibly, we want to remove any cultural assumption that flexible working is only for women, parents and carers. The new system is good for business as it will create a more motivated and flexible, talented workforce.

Quentin Blake and friends come to Mottisfont this summer
One of the nation’s best-loved artists comes to Mottisfont this summer in a new exhibition of work by Quentin Blake and other leading contemporary children’s illustrators. Visitors will be able to see for the first time 21 new drawings made by Quentin for the hit West End production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. There will also be stunning watercolour illustrations by artists including Michael Foreman, Emma Chichester Clark, John Burningham, Helen Oxenbury, Rebecca Cobb and Oliver Jeffers. The stories illustrated range from classics such as Treasure Island, Alice in Wonderland and classic fairy tales to works by Terry Jones and Michael Morpurgo. There will be a special family trail to go with this exhibition where you can create your own books! Visiting families can take inspiration from the exhibition and set off on an epic imaginative story trail around the house and grounds, creating their own illustrated books as they go. World Breastfeeding Week This year’s World Breastfeeding Week takes place 1-7 August with the theme Breastfeeding: A Winning Goal For Life! Calling all budding movie makers for a summer holiday workshop to remember!
This exciting non-residential workshop lasts for an entire week and is non-stop fun. The participants will learn about technical skills, such as shot angles, lighting and sound. They will have the opportunity to work the clapper board, handle the boom mic and assist the director and camera operators. They will be given coaching in performance skills of acting for the camera, line delivery and characterisation. They will 'shoot' in a variety of different locations- interior and exterior - at the lovely facilities of Prince's Mead School, Winchester. At the end of the week, the 'footage' is taken away and edited. Then everyone is invited to a 'premiere' screening of the finished movie and everyone goes home with their own DVD, complete with extra features. Summer Fun at Longdown Activity Farm There is always fun to be had at the Farm throughout the year – but especially during the summer. We have a full schedule of daily handson animal activities, as well as lots of fabulous indoor and outdoor play areas. Children can enjoy bottle-feeding goat kids and calves, meeting the pigs or cuddling a baby rabbit or chick. Hampshire children need foster carers Jules and Stephen from Basingstoke have been fostering children for just over three years. In this time they have looked after seven children, the eldest being 13 years old and the youngest just four days old. “We foster because we really enjoy providing a happy and nurturing home for a child to welcome them, help them to feel safe and part of our team. Fostering can make a hugely positive change for the better for a child but it's also great fun and learning not just for the children but for us and our family too,” continues Jules. “Our own children are great role models and for us being a foster family is really a family affair.” Hampshire Fostercare has a range of fostering opportunities, both short and longer term. We offer an excellent package of training before and after approval, and regular on-going support to people interested in becoming foster carers. Take the summer reading challenge Enter a fantastical world of legend and mythology by joining in with the 2014 Summer Reading Challenge. Run by independent charity the Reading Agency, the scheme invites children to pop into their local library and choose six or more books to read during the holidays. There are stickers and rewards to collect along the way, with a certificate at the end for every child who completes the challenge. This year's theme is Mythical Maze, which challenges 4-11 year-olds to discover fantastical creatures as they find their way around a labyrinth. Take the challenge at Winchester Discovery Centre Why not visit Winchester Discovery Centre this summer as the Centre is being transformed into Castle Crawley, home of the heroic Sir Crawley of Winchester and will be the host for the Mythical Maze. Children aged 4-11 can take part in the challenge by visiting Winchester Discovery Centre to sign up and then return to tell staff and volunteers about the books they have read over the summer. In addition, there is plenty of fun workshops, storytelling sessions, film screenings. There will be the opportunity to make a recycled dragon, a mythical mask, or a castle out of junk. On the 12 August, Certified LEGO Professionals from Bright Bricks will be at the Discovery Centre to help children build Castle Crawley from LEGO! Horrible Histories: Barmy Britain Neal Foster talks to Families Solent West Horrible Histories: Barmy Britain writer, director and producer talks to Families Solent West Editor about the success of the Horrible Histories and why he is looking forward to performing his stage show to an audience of 25,000 at this years Camp Bestival. Horrible Histories has become such a phenomenon and children and parents love to engage with the stories that are told, tell us why you think it is so successful? I think it all comes down to Terry Deary’s genius of telling history by concentrating on the silly, the gory, the disgusting and the outright strange, because there are in the history of civilizations, so much that has happened that is extraordinary and by concentrating on those elements of history you can really engage children in the story of history. You can tackle quite difficult aspects and because you can do them in a Monty Python style you can very successfully deal with complicated subjects and make them really clear and fun. When we opened Barmy Britain with an explanation of how the first world war started, a history graduate came up to us afterwards and recommended that GCSE students watch that scene because it lineated really well why the first world war started, so that is why it is so effective as it is a genius approach to history.
The horrible histories books are very engaging with lots of colorful characters for children to learn about history in a humorous way, how did you transform from the books to the stage? It has not proved too difficult because Terry himself is an actor and a playwright, so the style of the way the books are written
lend themselves to the stage very well. He looks for a sense in the dramatic in the stories so it was not a mammoth task to bring them to the stage and it is seemed like a really good fit.
Who is your favorite historical character? I’ve got several, from those we are currently doing on the show, I really love playing Guy Fawkes but we have also had a lot of fun with the murderers Burke and Hare, who set up a hotel in Edinburgh and started killing all of their guests to make money. I wouldn’t want to meet them but you can, as a lot of his skin was used to make all sorts of weird items and they are on display at the University of Edinburgh so you can actually come ‘face to face’ with him.
How long does it take you to put a stage show like Barmy Britain together and how much preparation goes into getting a stage show ready? It takes about a year. I sat down with Terry and we worked out what part of history we wanted to cover and which characters would be the most engaging to bring to stage. Some of the scenes are because you read about something in the newspaper and it sparks your imagination or you read a book about a battle you didn’t know had happened but ultimately, it always starts with Terry and the books.
Which character in the Horrible Histories series do you think represents your personality most and why? I like the Romans a lot; I am a bit of a dictator underneath. I think Augustus the First Roman Emperor and I would have bonded pretty well.
What characters can people expect to see in this years show and why have you chosen to bring those to Lulworth castle? You are going to see Queen Buddaka, William Wallace, he goes on the dating show take me out with Edward I, you will experience the black death in all its gory details, we also meet evil Elizabeth I, and Dick Turpin, Queen Victoria, plus Burke and Hare.
Camp Bestival is a fantastic event for parents and children, why do you think the event is such a success? It is well managed, organised and presented. It has a great atmosphere and there is a lot of care and attention to the details of the event.
Who are you most looking forward to seeing at Camp Bestival this year? I will be happy to see anyone at the event. The line up is fantastic and there are so many great acts to see. I'm looking forward to it. How did the Horrible Histories: Barmy Britain show become involved with Camp Bestival? We were invited last year and we had such a good time that we agreed to come again this year. We said we would be happy to come back as there was a great atmosphere and there is something very, very special about this event. We were a bit worried because the show was created to be performed in a theatre and we were not sure how it would work in a field to an audience of 25,000 people but it worked really well and much better than expected.

Swimming with your baby Swimming is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding exercises you can teach your child. It is important that parents understand the health benefits that are influenced when teaching your child to swim.
Physological
Swimming is the only sport that we can do from the moment we are born until we are old and grey. The physical benefits are numerous. By introducing breathing exercises you are using the heart and lungs which increases your cardio vascular outpoint. This leads to increased stamina and a huge benefit for parents is that leads to better eating and sleeping patterns.

Often in our busy schedules we can’t always guarantee quality time. In swimming this is automatic. Bonding is achieved with the mutual enjoyment of swimming together. Teachers encourage parents to give their child loving and focused encouragement.
Social
Swimming will introduce many different forms of socialising from meeting parents with children of the same age group to learn to accept people of different ethnic backgrounds, learning and physical difficulties. As your child grows, swimming classes introduce activities where children learn to share, take turns, accept disappointment and celebrate achievements.
Can I teach my child on my own?
One of the most important factors of swimming is confidence. Simply enjoying the water and supporting your child will encourage them to enjoy the surroundings of any pool. Parents can join classes to 10

learn the correct way to teach their child. When choosing a baby swimming school parents should look for structured programs that are more than nursery rhyme classes.
Is it safe to put a baby under water?
Fortunately, baby swimming has come a long way from the old fashioned beliefs that submerging your child is physically dangerous with adverse psychological effects. Submersion can be taught in a safe structured manner. Teaching the child to hold their breath before submersion is possible. Popular methods used to practice this are blowing in the childs face and word association. It is amazing how quickly a child will learn to associate the word with the action. A child who does not enjoy getting their face wet may not enjoy being submerged, so practicing this first step is important. Submersion should not be the main focus of baby swimming, but learning the ability to hold their breath in a relaxed fashion and be comfortable underwater is an important part of water confidence that should be taught from a young age. It is a common belief that all babies can go under water because they can hold their breath. Babies are indeed born with the diving reflex, which is both protective and involuntary. This reflex can be alarming to witness as the child can surface still holding their breath while completely safe, it can be exhausting for the child. The key to relaxed swimming is to teach them to hold the breath naturally and voluntarily. A good rule is not to submerge an unhappy child but to respond to their individual needs. Each will progress at their own rate, but practice and gentle encouragement should produce positive results. Preparation is the key to successful submersions for parents and children, which should always take place in a warm and clean pool.
What should my baby wear?
Some baby swim schools insist upon wearing double nappies but as long as your nappy fits snug then that should suffice, making sure your baby is comfortable is also important. Baby wetsuits are useful to help maintain body heat. However, one of the most important factors is baby swimming is a lot of fun!
The benefits of learning to swim We all know that being able to swim can save your life and is the best way to exercise the entire body aerobically, but swimming also conjures up visions of blue water and fun in the summer sun. Learning to swim opens up avenues to wonderful summer activities such as diving, snorkelling, water skiing, windsailing, canoeing etc Yet water is not a safe environment to the uninitiated! For many people, anxiety about the possible dangers is enough to make them avoid swimming altogether. It is safer and much more fun however to make sure you and your family can swim well!
Age
Everyone can learn to swim at any age but, it is best to start as early as possible. Babies can start as soon as they have had their jabs. Adults can start at any age!
Teacher/ pupil ratio
Usually, about four children to a teacher or less, is the best class size for nonswimmers. For adults it is worth doing it 1:1 or 2:1. 1:1 lessons are excellent for the very nervous and the very rushed! Crash courses also usually have wonderful results; just the fact that the student swims daily, aids the learning process dramatically.

Atmosphere of the lessons
It is widely acknowledged that the young learn a tremendous amount through play. Is the atmosphere stimulating and happy, one in which learning can take place? Does the teacher inspire confidence? Does he or she teach patiently and keep kind but firm control of the class”. Students should be encouraged to learn at their own pace and to gain a range of positive experiences. The best way to help your child learn, is to swim yourself and go down for a fun session to the local pool as often as possible. There is nothing quite like confidence building as knowing how to swim. It is an activity that can be kept up all year round in warm heated swimming pools. It is fun, good exercise and above all it can save the life of yourself as well as your loved ones.
Choosing the right swim school for you All reputable swim schools should be affiliated to a governing body and be providing a structured scheme of work. The major body in the UK is the ASA, Amateur Swimming Association. The scheme is fully transferable from different swim schools.
Ensure the teachers are qualified.
ASA trained teachers will generally hold a level 1 or 2 qualification. Each teacher should also have a current CRB check to work with children.
Check the class size
Local Authority pools may have larger classes, with teachers working from the side of the
pool and younger assistants in the pool helping the children. Smaller swim school may let their teachers in the water, giving a more personal approach and the class size may be smaller.
Get childrenlearning to swim as soon as possible Look for a swim school that offers adult and child water confidence sessions, where the teacher works with babies in the pool. Ideally the water temperature should be at least 30 degrees and the teacher will have a variety of toys, games and songs.
Choosing group of private lessons
Groups are ideal for babies and toddlers. Private lessons can be on a 1:1 or 1:2 basis and they can speed up the learning process significantly. Private lessons particularly benefit those with special needs or individuals requiring more attention.
Consider the costs
As a generally guide, local authority swimming pools will be in the region of £4 - £6 per 30 minute lesion but the class size may be large. Smaller individual swim schools may charge between £5 - £10 but the classes tend to be smaller and more personal. Private tuition starts from approx. £15 per lesson.
