Pop and Rock School Helps Young Stars Shine A pop and rock school in Croydon is winning rave reviews for boosting the musical skills and self-confidence of its students. The Rock Project offers young people the opportunity to learn electric guitar, bass guitar, drums and vocals as well as experience playing together as a band. Belmont School Secures Planning Permission for Senior School Following from independent school’s successful application to extend its education provision from 13 years to 16 years, Belmont School, in Holmbury St Mary, is pleased to announce that it has secured planning permission for its new Senior School As part of its expansion plans, Belmont School will be investing £5 million and increasing both staff and facilities. The new Senior School will provide seven new classrooms, an extensive glass atrium, IT suite, two double height Art Rooms, a Photography Department and a Performance Studio for drama, dance and the performing arts along with tutorial rooms and office space. In addition to the new Senior School building, Belmont School will add a new Design Technology Suite and two new Science laboratories. Nationwide Food Waste Poetry Competition Launched by Too Good To Go Too Good To Go, the world’s leading food waste fighting app has announced the launch of a brand new nationwide poetry competition for primary schools. The Save The Food Poetry Competition will get children excited about the fight against food waste, and clued up on the impact that wasting food is having on our environment. Open to all primary school children across the UK, entrants are encouraged to balance good knowledge of the food waste issue with creativity and can submit any style of poem - from rhyming couplets to haikus. The campaign has the support of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, with Government Food Waste and Surplus Champion Ben Elliot expressing his endorsement of the competition. Animal Antics at Banstead Prep Children in Banstead Prep’s preprep Animal Antics club have been learning about koalas and how the Australian bush fires have caused koalas’ homes to be destroyed, and a lot of their food lost. The children were really sad and wanted to help the lost and scared koalas. They decided to raise money by holding a cake sale and send that to a charity. (WWF’s Protect-a-Koala campaign) Miss Law, who leads the co-curricular club explained “We wanted to make as much money as possible so we thought about getting families and friends to help, and the idea grew to became a whole Year 1 event.” The children in Animal Antics made posters to tell everyone about the cake sale and lots of children and staff brought in cakes and money. Everyone had a great time at the cake sale and we raised £263.70, which has enabled us to protect 10 koalas! More info: www.bansteadprep.com
This achievement is the culmination of an Eco Team project spanning several years, focused on the responsible disposal of waste at the School. With the School’s extensive facilities having considerable use by the local community out of school hours, litter around high traffic areas could sometimes be unsightly. By participating in weekly litter picks and undertaking regular bin audits the pupil-led Eco Team were able to determine the optimum location for new recycling and general waste bins. The resultant shift to a higher proportion of waste being recycled led the Team to question where general waste was disposed of and to investigate more sustainable options. Camilla Townley, Head of Sustainability said ‘The Eco Team challenged the School to find a disposal service that used general waste to generate electricity. Having met with a variety of suppliers, The Hawthorns School were delighted to gain Zero to Landfill status at the end of last year.’

For the second year running pupils from Dunottar School, in Reigate, have won the Robot Performance Award, at the First Lego League Regional tournament in London. First Lego League is a global science and technology challenge for teams of students, aged 9-16 years. It aims to encourage an interest in real world issues and develop key skills that are crucial for their future careers. The students are challenged to work together to explore a given topic and to design, build and program an autonomous Lego robot to solve a series of missions. This win is testament to the inspirational computer science teaching at Dunottar, the success of the school’s Robotics Club and focus on ensuring pupils are gaining the digital skills that employers and government say are vital. Exam Preparation Techniques for Different Learning Styles By Claire Winter
Whether it be for SATs, 11+ or school exams, your child is likely to need to do some preparation at home. Of course, your child’s school may provide practice exam papers which are important tools but it may be that your child needs to hone in on revising particular subjects or topics in order to complete these successfully. So how do you help equip a primary school child with the techniques they need to revise? Educators, scientists, and psychologists have developed different models to understand the different ways that people learn. One popular theory, the VARK model identifies four primary types of learners: visual, auditory, reading/writing, and kinesthetic. Each learning type responds best to a different method of teaching. For example, auditory learners remember information best after reciting or explaining it back, while kinesthetic learners jump at the chance to participate in a hands-on activity. Most pupils don’t learn in just one way, so often using a combination of techniques will work best. Once you have established your child’s preferred learning style, you can try a variety of these methods to help your child prepare successfully for exams. Mind Mapping A mind map is a visual representation of information, introduced in an organised, but innovative method. This method is great for visual learners. Mind maps can be as detailed as your child likes, organising notes and suggestions around bigger, connecting ideas, around one idea, or around several topics. Mind maps can enhance memory and learning by 15% compared to conventional study methods.

Creating Visual Reminders Note-taking and highlighting are mainly reading-based learning techniques, but flashcards, post-it notes, and mind maps all take advantage of visual recognition too. If your child is naturally creative, then making flashcards with essential keywords or formulas on them can help them recall what they are studying. Try sticking flashcards or post-it notes around the house and every time your child comes across one, encourage them to describe the keywords or information in more detail. Organising Information Children who learn by reading and writing will like planning their work by topic Not only will this help them access the information they have to learn much faster, but the act of planning can make a child feel more in charge of their learning. Visual learners can use colour coded post-it notes to help remind them about the different topics too.

Top tips on creating harmony in your baby’s nursery Whatever your preferred design style, it is important to create a nursery that is comfortable and peaceful, not just for your baby but for you too! Below are 5 top tips to help you create harmony in your baby’s nursery room. 1.
Colours – Avoid bright and contrasting colours in a nursery, these are too overstimulating and might impede rest and deep sleep. Instead, choose softer colours and shades that sit harmoniously together such as pinks, neutrals and greens to mimic nature.

Lighting – Balanced lighting in your nursery is key. Avoid anything that gives off harsh light, as it makes a baby feel anxious and uncomfortable and is too overstimulating. Consider dimmable lights which will create a soft glow, making the room feel more inviting and warm. Use layers of light combinations, ensuring you have enough light in the right places. Installing black out blinds will enable your baby to sleep for longer by mimicking the conditions in the womb.

Natural materials – Think about bringing more of these into your nursery such as wooden toys over plastic ones. Try wools, cottons and linens for soft furnishings.

Layout – Correct arrangement and alignment of the room will help energy to flow better and create a more harmonious and comfortable space. Avoid placing baby’s bed against a window or too close to the door., or electrical appliances and plug sockets, minimising the electromagnetic field of energy flowing around babies’ bed.

Storage – Finally, we want to avoid clutter, so utilise your rooms height with clever storage systems to help to create a more spacious and organised environment, both for yourself and baby.

Healthy eating
Healthier Easter Cookies These are easy to make, with plenty of opportunities for the kids to get involved with mashing, measuring and mixing. They’re made healthier with the use of bananas and oats, but still offer the satisfying chocolate hit we all love! Makes 12 I Prep Time: 10 minutes I Cooking Time: 12 minutes
Ingredients 2 bananas 3 tbsp honey 2 tbsp cocoa 150g rolled oats 80g chocolate mini eggs
Instructions 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F), 180°C fan, Gas Mark 6. Line a couple of baking trays with baking paper. 2. Mash the bananas in a large bowl, then add the maple syrup and mix well. 3. Stir in the cocoa and oats until evenly combined. 4. Divide the mixture into 12 (about 2 level tablespoons each) and roll into balls. Place them on the baking trays. 5. Press a teaspoon into the centre of each cookie to create a nest shape. 6. Bake for 12 minutes, then cool on a wire rack. 7. Add a couple of chocolate mini eggs to the centre of each cookie.

1. Have everyone find a stick and wrap lengths of string/wool (or, for younger children, lots of rubber bands) around it. 2. Tell them that they are now going on a walk to collect natural objects, anything that attracts them on their journey, to become a part of their stick. These objects can represent memories, things they like, or feelings/thoughts. 3. Put the first thing found at the top of the stick to represent the beginning, and the last thing found near the bottom to help with retelling the story. 4. Have each child tell the others the story of their journey, using the objects as prompts.
