Raising Confident Children with Perform Sara has two children, Honor (8) and James (6), who have both been attending Perform classes since they were 4 years old. “I’ve always wanted my children to feel confident speaking in public and chatting to all sorts of people. I think these are essential life skills these days” says Sara.
Girls Play Less Sport than Boys Boys spend significantly longer than girls on sporting activities. A report by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) found that boys spend an average of 40 minutes per day on sports activities, compared with 25 minutes a day for girls. But encouragingly, boys and girls who do participate in sport enjoy it equally, according to the study.

Spin a Tale during National Storytelling Week
One way parents can change this is by setting an example. Research shows that by being active themselves, parents, particularly mothers can influence their child’s activity levels.
The first week of February marks National Storytelling Week, a chance to reflect on one of the oldest art forms in the world. We are all immersed in stories — from conversations during which we re-tell events in our lives, to watching our favourite television shows. Speech and language therapists believe that storytelling is vital for children’s academic success as it promotes narrative skills and strengthens the ability of children to correctly sequence ideas. To be a good reader and writer a child needs firstly to be a good speaker and listener.
Another way is to make it social. Research by Women in Sport shows that girls are most interested in making friends and having fun when playing sport. Seek out clubs, classes or activities that may have girls of a similar age as your daughter or encourage her to take up new classes with her existing friends.
Above all though, storytelling is fun. Whether we are listening to someone else’s story or telling our own, inventing and adapting narratives can open doors to exciting new worlds — both real and imaginary.

Kingswood Arms Golf Society funds stunning refurbishment at local children’s charity Willow House, where children live while attending The Children’s Trust School for children with complex needs, has been completely refurbished thanks to donations from several generous supporters including Kingswood Arms Golf Society. BAFTA seeks next generation of game designers

BAFTA Young Game Designers aims to inspire the UK’s game-makers of the future, by giving young people the chance to design and make their
The competition engaged more than 4000 young people in 2018. The competition has been designed so that young people can enter in their own time, as part of a lesson in school, within a coding club, or as an additional homework challenge set by their teacher. To support teachers and code club leaders, BAFTA has also created a range of free online teaching resources which are available to download at www.ygd.bafta.org/resources. Entries are now open for 10-18-yearolds as well as nominations for ‘Mentor’ award. The winning entrants will receive further development for their games, mentoring by games professionals, visits to major games studios and a host of other prizes. Another award for Hever Castle. This time it is the best castle in south east Staff at Hever Castle are celebrating after scooping bronze at the Beautiful South awards; making it the “best Castle in the south east.” The historic attraction received a bronze award in the Large Visitor Attraction of the Year category. As well as a detailed awards application those putting themselves forward in each category underwent a mystery shopper visit plus a judging panel in order to be named as a finalist. The Big Garden Birdwatch The RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch takes place from 26 to 28 January and is the largest wildlife survey in the world. The information collected helps monitor bird species in the UK and is great fun for children. To take part, you need to watch the birds in your garden or local park for just one hour at some point over the three days and report your results to the RSPB. You can request a FREE Big Garden Birdwatch pack from the RSPB which includes a bird identification chart and advice to help you attract wildlife to your garden. To make it fun, challenge your children to see who can spot the most birds. Take a bike ride to a local park to look for birds, or make a day trip out of it and spot birds in a new place. The Toxic School Run Children in the UK are being forced to breathe dangerous levels of toxic air on their way to and from school and whilst in the playground, according to new research. A study by Unicef and Queen Mary University in London reveals that young children are absorbing a disproportionate amount of tiny black carbon particles during the school day with potentially devastating health consequences. Exposure to these particles, which can penetrate deep into the lungs, bloodstream and even the brain, stunt lung and brain growth and cause long term breathing conditions, is generally higher at school than when children are at home. Unicef UK estimates that one in three children are growing up in places in the UK with unsafe levels of particulate pollution. It is calling on the government to take urgent action to protect children from toxic air before irreversible damage is done to their health and their futures.More info at www.unicef.org.uk/clean-air-child-health-air-pollution
Schools that Ban Mobile Phones Improve Results Should children be allowed to take mobile phones to school? Opinion is divided. Some advocate a complete ban because of the potential for distraction, while others promote the use of phones as a teaching tool in the classroom. Schools in England and Scotland have complete autonomy regarding their mobile phone policy, which has resulted in large differences in the timing of the introduction of bans. Schools that ban pupils from carrying mobile phones show a sustained improvement in exam results, with the biggest advances coming from struggling students, according to research published by the London School of Economics. The large-scale study found schools in Birmingham, London, Leicester and Manchester that banned mobiles enjoyed a boost in the proportion of pupils getting five good passes at GCSE, compared with schools that allowed pupils to keep their phones, even if switched off. www.lse.ac.uk Families Surrey East 5

Cyberbullying: What You Need to Know By Claire Winter
Today’s children spend a lot of time online. How can we make sure they are safe? According to Bullying UK’s national survey, 56% of children surveyed said they had been bullied online, and 42% felt unsafe. Cyberbullying is defined as the use of digital technologies with an intent to offend, humiliate, threaten, harass or abuse somebody. This kind of harassment can happen anywhere your child is online, class Whatsapp groups, gaming platforms, apps, and social media. One of the main problems with bullying online is that it can happen 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and it can go viral very quickly. If it’s happening, children can’t escape it; we need to educate them on how to deal with it and to ensure they know to tell a trusted adult if it is happening to them. The earlier parents start to have conversations with their kids about being online, the better. We need to guide them and teach them about responsible online activity. Internet Matters encourages parents to talk to their children about who they want to be online, what they share and how long they spend on the Internet. They also advise taking an active interest in what your child is looking at and frequently check up on them. Other tips include making sure there are no phones/devices in the bedroom at night and putting Wifi on a timer to limit the time your kids spend online. Here are Families top tips on how to teach your children to stay safe from cyberbullying. Don’t respond - never respond to a rude comment. Bullies only bully to get a response. Screenshot - take a picture of the bullying
behaviour, so you can report it if the behaviour escalates. Talk about it - make sure you tell a trusted adult or friend. They can give you advice and support you if you are being bullied. Block it - block the user who is bothering you and report it. This is important even if this person is someone you know, or a socalled ‘friend.’ Report it - if someone at school is harassing or bullying you make sure you tell a teacher. If it is a stranger or a person from out of school, make sure you tell your parents. Be private - make sure your privacy settings are set to private so people that you don’t know can’t contact you. You wouldn’t talk to a stranger on the street, so why do it online?
Once you send or write something online you can’t get it back. Remind your children to ask themselves: would I be happy for everyone I know to see this? If your child or someone you know is being cyberbullied make sure you get some help. Bullying UK (www.bullying.co.uk) has some great resources and a helpline at 0808 800 2222. Internet Matters (www.internetmatters. org) also has some useful tips and videos that you can share with your children.
You can be traced – explain that children that misbehave online by posting abuse or threats can be tracked and traced by the police without any difficulty. Every time you visit a website or make a posting, your Internet service provider has a record of your activity. Even if you create an anonymous email address, you can still be found. Keep passwords safe - remind children to protect their passwords and not share them with others. Tell them to use a combination of lowercase and uppercase letters, numbers, and symbols. This will mean they are less likely to be hacked. Log out - if using a public computer at school, a library or even at a friend’s house, be sure to sign out of the web service you are using. Think before you type - remember the impact your words can have on others.
What if your Child is Cyberbullying? Psychotherapist Alex Drummond, who is a member of the Counselling Directory (www. counselling-directory.org.uk) says it is easy for children to distance themselves from the consequences of their actions when they are online. “It will be upsetting to find your child is the perpetrator of online abuse, but it’s also important for parents to see this as part of the socialisation of children, step back from the emotive aspects and deal with this calmly and thoughtfully. Express disappointment, not anger, and ‘call-in’ rather than ‘call-out’ the behaviour, by helping the young person recognise the impact of their actions. All children will do things we disapprove of at times; our role as parents is to be patient and guide, to understand consequence, and to give them the courage to stand apart from the crowd when injustice prevails by doing what is right.”

A week-long chance to take part in true farmyard fun, with animal encounters galore, earn your stamps as you complete activities on our farm trail. There’s feeding and grooming, all whilst learning about animal husbandry and why the residents at Godstone Farm are so happy! Expect to see leaping lambs in our cosy animal barn, furry and feathered babies in our animal holding area and pretty pink snouts when you’re out and about! Giving at Christmas Sometimes so little can mean so much. We know how lucky we are here at St Christopher’s and it is good to stop and think about others and ask how we can give as well as take. Our children may only be aged between 3 and 7 but there is a lot we can do that doesn’t cost us and that really makes a difference to others. Using just the beautiful voices of Year 2 we sang Christmas Carols at the Ashley Centre to raise money for Epsom Hospital Medical Equipment Fund. To close the Christmas term we also attended Linden House Residential Home to entertain the residents with our carols and also Christmas music played on hand bells. All the children took a handmade card addressed to a named resident and watching the children and residents sharing these cards and their hopes for Christmas brought some early festive magic to all. The wonder of number Helping children to understand that Maths is an important life skill is key to motivating them to learn, as well as making it enjoyable! From the 25 February until the 1 March, every pupil at Micklefield School, an independent preparatory school in Reigate, will take part in a theme week on the ‘Wonder of Number.’ Pupils will discover Maths in a broad range of subjects from Art, Music and Science to History, Geography and IT and have a lot of fun in the process! They will see a play by Hobgoblin Theatre Co on ‘The History of Maths’, take part in Maths quizzes, dress up for the day in their ‘One’sies, run a tray sale to practice handling money, decorate t-shirts for their ‘Rock Bottom’ show and make alternative snakes and ladders games. There will be a QR code trail, the opportunity to use sphero robots and program Blue-Bots (the new Bee-Bot robot with a Bluetooth connection) and Upper School will experience number via Virtual Reality (VR) goggles. Improving the Number Foundations of Pre-Schoolers A leading child psychologist from Kingston University has produced a series of number games for nurseries and parents which are proven to boost the confidence and ability of preschool children in maths in just 5 weeks. Dr Jo Van Herwegen created the games based on her research into the Approximate Number System (ANS), a mechanism used by the brain to differentiate between groups that have more or fewer items in them without counting. The ANS games are based on two foundations estimation and matching approximate large amounts. “The activities we’ve developed are fun, rather than formal lesson plans, but they’re based on scientific evidence about the cornerstones of mathematical learning and how to nurture this in young children” Dr Van Herwegen explained. Her research showed that playing these specially-designed games for 10 minutes a day for 5 weeks improved young children’s number foundations. This improvement was still apparent 6 months later, when the children had started formal education. Little Seeds in Cedar Wood at Gatton Park celebrated it’s first birthday party in October and is excited to welcome children and families to the woods this winter. Free stay and play Nursery session at Lingfield College
The fun and educational visits are a valuable Enrichment Opportunity to a school’s Cornerstones Curriculum across Key stage 1 and Key stage 2 as well as complement the science subject of the Curriculum. The Mini Pig interactions can also be used as a tool to enhance children’s Emotional Intelligence, a relatively recent focus in schools. Every Friday morning Lingfield College has a very popular free ‘stay and play’ Nursery session. This runs between 9am – 10.30am and is attended by local mums (and a few dads!) and their little ones. Head of the Nursery, Mrs Wild says, ‘I love seeing how happy the children are every week. They start making friends from an early age and also, they explore the wide variety of toys and equipment we have available. There is no need to book. Just drop in. All are most welcome!’

Play or Structured Learning in the Early Years? The current Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum stipulates a 50/50 balance between child-centred, play-based learning and adultled learning. Over the years there have been individuals who question the system and look to introduce new ideas. For example, Liz Truss, a past Education and Childcare Minister, championed the introduction of a French-style ‘structured learning’ approach, with a graduateled workforce responsible for larger groups of children, and a reduced child-to-carer ratio.

Whilst the ‘structured learning’ model is hailed for its effectiveness in socialising children, teaching them manners, and creating a calm, organised atmosphere, it is not an environment in which young children learn best. And it definitely doesn’t encourage them to be inquisitive, self-motivated learners. Children need to practise negotiating with each other and experience problem solving situations, without the direct supervision of an adult. If they are unable to practise these skills in free play, they become too reliant on adults to both intervene for them in social situations and to motivate and inspire them to learn. A great example of the benefits of play-based learning happened in one of our nursery settings recently. I observed the children carrying large construction blocks, lengths of fabric, pegs and sticky tape out of the building and realised they were busy working together to construct a range of interestingly shaped homes in the garden, entirely from their own imaginations. Some children were making signs to indicate who lived where; others were adding connecting tunnels and others still were creating places for everyone to sit and a welcoming atmosphere.. The children often disagreed about how to construct the dwellings and tempers flared when some children “borrowed” things from one den to improve their own, but the whole process was fascinating to observe. our carares offered suggestions to help the children make decisions, but they provided choices rather than answers. They also asked open questions throughout the process such as: How many pegs have you used? How is this staying up? What does your sign say? The learning that took place that afternoon was incredible – the children were selfmotivated, interested in the task and invested in a positive outcome. In adult-led learning, we often meet resistance, as a child does not want to complete the task in the way that we expect. However, this leads to other teaching opportunities and is equally as important as play-based learning. The two work well in tandem, giving the children opportunities to develop core skills, find their own strengths and become well-rounded individuals. Currently observations are made about a child’s development while they play, helping carers plan structured learning activities relevant to that child’s development. These observations include the individual interests, abilities and levels of assistance required by each child. This makes it possible to organise interesting, achievable but challenging adult-led activities for each child, taking account of their preferred learning style and developmental level.

A mixture of adult-led and play-based learning is important for the development of every child. The individual child needs to learn structure and rules, and participate as part of group but they also need time to explore their own interests, likes and dislikes and see where they fit into the whole. When considering the introduction of new ways of learning for children, it’s important to consider the impact this can have on the individual development of a child, as well as the changes that will need to be made to group learning. For example, increasing the number of children each worker has in their care makes it more difficult for detailed observations to be made about each child and to organise adultled activities which are appropriate for both the development of individual children and the group. Inevitably, this forces settings to move to a classroom-style environment in which, sadly, children lose vital free-play learning and development opportunities. An inspector calls!
The role of an Ofsted Inspector in assessing a nursery setting learning. “ Ofsted Inspectors also observe children and then question the Key Person responsible for those children about them. “If a child is upset, the Key Person should be able to tell me about the child’s circumstances, for instance, if they are new to the setting” says Sangeeta. “There should also be information about a child’s development, and planning for a child’s next steps.”
Whilst there are lots of important considerations when choosing a nursery or pre-school for your child, it’s unlikely you’ll make a final choice without at least a cursory glance at the setting’s Ofsted report. The acronym is one used frequently by parents but how many of us actually know what the acronym Ofsted actual stands for or how a nursery or pre-school gets its Ofsted rating? Sangeeta Gardiner has been an Inspector for The Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills (Ofsted) since it was set up in 1992 and has conducted well over 150 inspections of nurseries, pre-schools, and child-minders. Becoming and remaining an inspector requires rigorous, ongoing training and examinations, meaning that Ofsted Inspectors are very knowledgeable. One of the key things an Inspector examines is how a setting safeguards the children in its care. Inspectors check to make sure safeguarding policies are implemented, that staff have the relevant legal background checks, and have been properly recruited. “I’ll ask staff members how they got their jobs” reports Sangeeta. “Being a friend of a
friend is simply not good enough. I also probe more deeply if I discover staff members have moved around a lot.” Checking safeguarding arrangements also involves monitoring how children enter and leave the setting and what provisions there are for visitors. “It’s also important that children are being taught how to keep themselves safe” comments Sangeeta. “For example, they need to know that it’s dangerous to walk while holding a pair of scissors.” Changes in the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) framework place more emphasis on the importance of a child’s emotional security, so Inspectors also observe how confident and secure children feel in their environment and in their interactions with others. Early Year’s Education is all about learning through play but the word “teaching” is still used in the EYFS framework. Staff “teach” children about their world by asking them open ended questions. “I observe the language teachers use and how they’re interacting with a child” says Sangeeta.” I’ll ask staff why they have chosen a particular activity and how it contributes to a child’s
So what happens if there are issues with teaching methods? A lot depends on whether the majority of staff are working positively, and, where there are staff who are performing less well, that the manager of the setting recognises this. “Part of the inspection is a joint observation with the manager” says Sangeeta. ”If a staff member has set up an activity that hasn’t worked well and the manager isn’t aware of this, that needs to be addressed. However, if the manager is aware and can support a staff member to improve their skills, then this provides good evidence that the nursery is working well towards improving its provision.” Sangeeta owns two settings in Greater London. How does she ensure they meet Ofsted’s high standards in her setting? Good communication and reflective practice are vital. As a team, each setting regularly fills out a self-evaluation form, so that everybody involved can reflect on what works and what doesn’t, and a clear direction can be formulated. Sangeeta is always aware of what is happening at each nursery, but also stresses that the quality of her managers and teachers is exceptional. “The managers of my settings are experienced and wellestablished members of the team, and have known many of the children and their families for a number of years.” You can find Ofsted Reports for settings in
