Editor’s note After running neighbouring Families LSB for a number of years, it is with great excitements that I am taking over Families Surrey East as I feel the two magazines can only enrich one another. I look forward to sharing loads exiting things for you to do with your families. Summer is here, and what wonderful sunshine we have been having. This issue we discuss holiday care options and have some fantastic days out for all the family. It is also Plastic Free July – we dare you to take the challenge and go Plastic Free. Pupils at Dunottar School in Reigate have raised £310 in support of Kids for Kids, an organisation that aims to help malnourished children in Darfur, Sudan, by loaning family’s goats and providing an integrated package of sustainable projects suitable to the region.

Kids for Kids has ‘adopted’ 87 villages across North Darfur and helped to improve the lives of over 370,000 people living in remote and inaccessible regions where violence is still a daily hazard on the walk to water. Dunottar pupils embarked upon a range of fundraising initiatives, which included an own-clothes day and a staff versus pupil’s lunchtime rounders match. Local girl makes bonding squares to help premature babies bond with their parents As part of learning a new skill for her Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award, Hannah Rowley, a 14-year-old girl from Oxted presented babies in the neonatal unit at East Surrey Hospital with bonding squares. Bonding squares are used in neo-natal units to help premature babies bond with their parents. The square is usually placed against their skin, down their top, to pick up the parent’s scent and then placed under the baby’s head whilst in an incubator and are swapped over every 12 hours. They are also a great help to mothers as having their baby’s scent nearby will help to trigger the hormones which will help with milk supply and expressing.” Hannah said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for me to learn a new skill. Surprise baby at ZSL London Zoo Last autumn ZSL London Zoo welcomed Tobi, a male tamandua as a partner for their resident female, Ria. They were overjoyed when just five months later they spotted a tiny baby clinging to Ria’s back, making newcomer Tobi a very fast mover - when keepers did the maths they discovered that Ria must have fallen pregnant the same week they met. “We were confident Ria was pregnant as she’d just started to put on some weight, but we weren’t expecting to welcome a new member of the family quite so soon. They must have got together pretty much on their very first date – Tobi clearly pulled out all the stops!”, said ZSL keeper Steve Goodwin
Mischief Makers – the 2018 Summer Reading Challenge Children’s reading can ‘dip’ during the summer holidays if they don’t have regular access to books and encouragement to read for pleasure. The annual Summer Reading Challenge helps get three quarters of a million children into libraries each year to maintain their reading skills and confidence. 2018 will be the 20th challenge. It’s open primary school children of every ability. This year the challenge will focus on the theme of mischief and pranks, as inspired by the much-loved Beano comic, which celebrates its 80th anniversary next year. Children are challenged to read at least six library books over the school holidays and collect incentives, such as stickers, to earn their final challenge certificate and medal. Children can choose, recommend and review books at the Book Sorter on the Challenge website. This is the largest database of children’s peer-peer reading recommendations. #SpotTheBox Reigate & Banstead Borough Council have taken a great approach to get families and children off the digital devices and looking up into the fauna and flora of Earlswood Common, by installing a new and fascinating bird box trail. The bird box trail comprises of 23 eye-catching nest boxes, all created by local artists. Some of which have already been claimed by Great Tits, Blue Tits and Robins. Even some cheeky members of the local bat population have already taken advantage of the new homes as roosts. Voices in the middle Sadly, 1 in 3 children in UK will see their parents split up before they reach their 16th birthday. Voices in the Middle is a charity that is raising awareness of the impact of divorce and separation on young people in the UK. This includes providing a place for young people to find help and ways to share their voice, without being put in the middle of any arguments. At the centre of this support, a new digital platform has been launched, www. voicesinthemiddle.com, a dedicated place where young people can find help and support, voice their views and share their experiences, read helpful content and connect with discussion boards, helplines and local services. Join Pioneer Engage Café Church for their Picnic in the Park meet ups over the Summer Whilst having been around for a while, Pioneer Engage Church is in fact one of Leatherhead’s newest churches. “Our group is a group with great friendships and care. Our music is informal but professional, occasionally singing some of the great hymns. The talks and stories are helpful and children are taught and cared for with “Amazing creativity.”, explains author, speaker and broadcaster Gerald Coates. BPA - it’s dirty little secret Whilst we are talking about plastic let’s talk about BPA and the impact it is leaving on our children. BPA, or Bisphenol A is a chemical often used in containers that store food and beverages. Some of the problems caused by BPA are: • • • • • •
Structural damage to your brain Increased fat formation and risk of obesity Altered immune function Changes in gender-specific behaviour, and abnormal sexual behaviour Stimulation of prostate cancer cells Increased prostate size and decreased sperm production
David Attenborough – our generations true hero BBC naturalist, Sir David Attenborough has brought the dire situation to the forefront of people’s hearts through his recent series, Blue Planet 2. Even the Queen has declared war on plastic. The series was named the most watched show of 2017, with one episode attracting an official rating of 17m. So, if nothing else, one simple thing that we as parents can do, is sit with our children and watch this eye-opening documentary. A recent study done by the University of Exerter, has found that almost 90 per cent of teenagers have this genderbending chemical in their bodies, and only last year the European Chemicals Agency reclassified BPA as a substance of ‘very high concern’ because of its ‘probable serious effects’ on human health. So, if the need to stop the use of single use plastic because of the drastic impact it is having on our environment it is not enough, we need to change our ways because of the drastic impact it is having on our children.

Tips for teaching your child to ride a bike
Healthy ice lollies to make with your kids Let the kids cool down in style with healthy homemade ice lollies. There is no limit to the range, as you can use any fruit you like – and even smuggle in some veggies!
Summer is a great time to teach your child to ride their bike. Here are a few tips for taking on this important project. Teach in short sessions: Do not overtire your children or they may be put off cycling. 30 minutes at a time is enough for young children. Finish the session on a high, even if they haven’t managed to pedal unaided, and stop when boredom or frustration set in. Location: It is best to use a hard, level surface, rather than grass. Ideally, choose somewhere with a gentle slope. Make sure the location is traffic-free but keep an eye out for pedestrians, animals and parked vehicles. Bike setup: Check the rider’s clothing is appropriate and the helmet fits correctly with the straps not too loose or too tight. It should be seated over the front of the rider’s head. Braking: The best way for children to grasp the concept of braking is for them to walk alongside the bike with their hands in position and attempt to use the
brakes in this way. Balance: Use a balance bike or take the pedals and stabilisers off a normal bike. Stabilisers are not recommended when children are learning to ride as they will learn the wrong weight distribution and arm movements for turning. Make sure the rider can reach the brake levers and can put their feet comfortably on the ground when seated on the saddle. Lower the saddle if necessary to the lowest setting. Scooting: Ask the rider to let go of the brakes and start scooting. They should use the bike like a hobby horse and push along the ground using their feet. Supporting: Whilst they are learning to pedal you may need to support them. Hold them gently under the arms or by gently holding the middle section of the back of your child’s top. Time to let go: Many children may not realise they are riding without help and will be amazed when they stop and turn round to see you are now some distance away. Whipping up a batch of homemade ice lollies makes for a quick and exciting summer project for kids and these are a breeze to make. All you need is a food processor or blender, ice lolly moulds and a bit time to allow them to set. Below is my favourite recipe for yoghurt and berry ice lollies, which is also one of the easiest!
Yoghurt and Berry Coconut Ice Lollies Ingredients Makes 4 (but this is depending on the size of your lolly moulds) • • • • •
400gof frozen (or fresh) berries. A mix is great - I use blueberries and strawberries 1/2 tin of coconut milk 400g natural yoghurt 1 tbsp maple syrup (use a little less or more depending on how sweet your fruit is) 1 tsp vanilla
Instructions 1.
Place all ingredients into a blender or food processor and blitz until smooth. 2. Pour the mixture into your ice-lolly moulds and attach the freeze tops. 3. Freeze for a minimum of 4 hours until solid. 4. Warm the moulds under water to release the pops when you are ready to eat them. School holidays…so what are my childcare options? However, the dilemma for a lot of parents is what to do during the school holidays – who will care for the kids? Childcare options can range from being relatively cheap, to ending up being a costly affair. Give your child a summer to remember at Surrey Wildlife Trust’s fantastic holiday club! Children can let out their wild side and explore the wonderful woodland habitats within the Trust’s private nature reserve at Nower Wood, near Leatherhead.
The concept of holiday camps originates from the US, however tend to be more day camps rather than overnight stays. Summer camps can be either on a specific topic e.g. science camp, football camp etc or a generic camp which covers a range of activities during the day. Lunch is usually provided in the price. They allow children the opportunity to meet with other kids on a daily basis plus allows them to learn new skills. It’s worth researching which camps are operating in your local area or speaking to other parents if they have any recommendations. CHILDMINDERS Local childminders are a huge asset and allow parents to drop off their children to a childminder and know that their child will be fully entertained. They provide all activities and work to a high standard ensuring that the children are doing age based activities, developing their skills. You can view all the registered childminders from your Local Authority website. Childminders do get booked up fast as the number of spaces available are limited, so it’s worth doing your research early.
Each week runs Monday-Thursday, the days are jam-packed with outdoor activities like shelter building, fire lighting, orienteering, minibeast hunting and pond dipping. Children will unearth the rich wildlife and history of the ancient woodland under the guidance of the Trust’s experienced staff. British Wildlife Centre Summer is here and at the British Wildlife Centre the trees and shrubs lend a beautiful backdrop to the wonderful wild species that live there. It’s an exciting time as this is when the season’s new cubs, kittens and calves start to venture out and can be seen by visitors. Look out for the small and exquisite red squirrel kits in the Centre’s walk-through enclosure. In the Deer Park, delightful fallow deer fawns and red deer calves will be grazing alongside their mums. The polecats should be producing litters of up to eight gorgeous energetic kits. And in spring little owl, tawny owl and long-eared owl chicks were hatched and have been growing fast. On the subject of birds, the Centre is hoping to display ravens later this season. Ravens are the largest member of the crow family with a wingspan of up to 150cm (nearly 5ft).
