Swim teacher, Emma, is celebrating
after becoming one of the first 12 people in the UK to be presented with a prestigious new qualification. The ‘ASA Level 2 Extended Diploma in Coaching Learn to Swim’ qualification was created by the national governing body for swimming, the ASA, along with Water Babies, the world’s largest baby and toddler swim school. The diploma consolidates years of learning into one prestigious qualification, with specific focus on child development, child protection, parent feedback and the innovative delivery of swimming lessons. It requires high quality, specialist training allowing Water Babies teachers to advance their skills and knowledge to a world class level. Emma explains: “I am so pleased to have received this diploma. A lot of hard work and research has gone into it, but it’s all worth it when I get to see babies’ faces light up during our classes. I get a real sense of pride from my work and it’s great to now have this qualification in recognition of all my learning.” Emma has been a baby swimming teacher with Water Babies for five years, and teaches at Greenhall Community School and St Lawrence Primary School in Stafford, as well as the M Club in Stoke on Trent.

Parties
Magical Mummy Party Tips from Kate Beddow at Growing Spirit Kids
Calmer Parties For most parents these two words simply do not go together. Children’s birthday parties have become synonymous with noise, hyperactivity, tears and stress but it doesn’t have to be that way! With the economic climate the way it is more and more people are reverting back to having smaller parties at home rather than the big expensive soft play type options. By having your party at home you have a reason to keep numbers manageable as well as having total control over what the children eat, the activities they do and cost. This is crucial because too much sugar and too many additives are so often the cause of upsetting behaviour at parties and tears for everyone involved. Obviously this might not be everyone’s cup of tea and some people will always prefer to have someone else organise the fun and games, but here are some of my top tips for a price conscious, peaceful party: Have a quiet activity for after lunch which involves them sitting at a table still and insist that they do it. It might be making a musical instrument, decorating a princess crown, making a magic wand or making their own pirate hat. It will give them time for their food to go down and prevent any excitement related sickness. Place calming crystals around the room and especially on the table while the children are eating, you could even include some in the party bags. Fabulous crystals for calming little ones are: amethyst, agate (particularly blue lace agate) and green aventurine. Keep party bags simple and keep sweets to a minimum. If you have a theme, use that to help you with the party bags. It may even work out cheaper to buy the children one small gift each rather than cluttering them up with lots of cheap plastic bits. You can often buy books in bulk and split the pack, or buy them a small toy or game. Try to keep within your theme it will make the party more memorable and enjoyable for everyone.
Here is an example we used a few years ago to help get your imagination going:
Keep sweet treats to a minimum, it’s a party so some treats are essential but why not let the kids make fruit kebabs or decorate their own home made fairy cake rather than buying sugar loaded cupcakes. Give them a good, healthy meal. Children will misbehave if their blood sugar drops too so give them a balanced meal and this will then be a great foundation for the treats to follow. You can even cook a hot meal rather than providing mountains of crisps, nuggets and sausage rolls. Give the party a theme. Children love themes because they know what to expect. Invite them to dress up and theme the party games, food, party bags everything. It will help you focus on what you’re going to do too.
Wizard of Oz Party: The children came dressed as their favourite character. We played games like; Tin Man statues (the children had to cease up and stay still like the Tin Man when the music stopped), Musical Yellow Brick Road (the children had to sit on a piece of yellow card when the music stopped)
The party bags had; the wizard’s balloon, rainbow pencils, Tin Man’s heart notebook, Glinda’s bubbles and a Tin Man’s heart lollipop.
The table was decorated with poppies and they had sausage, mash (with a small amount of green food colouring but you could mash broccoli or peas into it for a more natural alternative), carrots and sweetcorn. I arranged this on the plate so it looked like the yellow brick road surrounded by poppies leading to the emerald city.

Pregnancy & Babies
I’ll have what she’s having
By Helena Foss
The bible told us it is women’s lot to suffer pain in childbirth. Midwives in ante-natal classes talk about ‘labour’ and pain relief. In the movies birthing women scream for drugs. The belief that childbirth is agony is not only firmly imprinted in our collective psyche, it’s a fact, right? My idea of a pleasurable childbirth was lounging in the hospital birthing pool getting high on the gas and air. (The reality was an emergency caesarean section. Oh, well.) But for some women, childbirth goes way beyond pleasure. For some women – and come closer because I’m going to tell you a secret here – actually have an orgasm. Are you choking on your coffee? I know. Outrageous, isn’t it? How on earth does that happen? It seems that being a professional dancer, practicing yoga, having few expectations, a loving husband and a hot tub under a tree in a home in Hawaii to give birth in, most certainly help. According to an American news feature on the documentary ‘Orgasmic Birth’, it was a simple kiss from her husband, which helped turn Amber Hartnell’s labour into unexpected rolling waves of ecstasy. (See: www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5bm9-B6Ec4 or search ‘Birth as we know it’. ) The producer of Orgasmic Birth, childbirth educator Debra Pascali Bonaro, says that the same organs involved in orgasm get stimulated during childbirth. According to Dr Christine Northrup, author of ‘Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom’, it is the expectation of pain that causes women to tense up and release stress hormones, disrupting the surging hormonal changes that accompany labour. The mix of prolactin, oxytocin and beta-endorphins are nature’s painkillers. Or, as Northrup describes them, “the molecules of ecstacy”. Not that Amber Hartnell didn’t feel any pain in her hot tub. She did. But she was relaxed enough to be able to transform it into what she called “sensations” by squatting and moving her hips in a spiralling motion, leading to an orgasmic birth experience that overwhelmed her with both tears and laughter. Rather than having contractions, she felt like she was being expanded. When the documentary aired in America in 2009 it caused a mixture of fascination, shock and horror, not least at the perceived ‘indecency’ of equating birth with sex. But hang on, wasn’t that how conception happened a mere nine months previously? The British birthing guru Sheila Kitzinger, who had three orgasmic births herself and says she has met hundreds of women during her career who have too, wrote her book ‘Birth and Sex’ to illustrate the connection hardwired deep in our biology. When a woman is free to follow her instincts and give birth naturally she says,
“birth and sex mingle to become one in the thrilling, sweet, intense and overwhelming experience of creation.” Nature really is extraordinary, isn’t it? And we forget that our bodies are nature itself. “The genius of [a woman’s] body is designed to give birth with ease and grace,” says birth educator Elena Vladimirova in the film ‘Birth as We Know It’, which has become an international word-of-mouth phenomenon. It shows footage of women giving birth in the sea. Their faces appear trancelike; their bodies relaxed, not a trace of agony in sight. There are so many factors in having a pleasurable birth; feeling safe, supported, being able to trust one’s own body – and even with the best will in the world, it doesn’t happen for every women. But isn’t it great to know it actually exists? We might not have been so lucky, but at least we can educate our daughters about the awesome power lying dormant right inside of them.

Help is at hand, thanks to Amphora Aromatics Lavender & Chamomile Barrier Cream - a gentle, soothing and highly moisturing rehydrating cream that also acts as a barrier to protect the skin. Combining the calming essential oils of lavender and chamomile with the moisturing and nourishing properties of Cocoa Butter, Wheatgerm Oil, Beeswax, Avocado Oil and Calendula extract, this versatile cream protects against irritation and nourishes skin. An everyday essential, simply apply a thin layer after cleaning baby’s bottom and before putting on a nappy. Try it on your hands too as it will help to soften and protect skin. Amphora Aromatics Lavender & Camomile Barrier cream retails at £5.95 for 60ml and is available to purchase from www.amphora-aromatics.com
How to prevent nappy rash The best defence against nappy rash is a dry bottom. To help, follow these easy steps: Give your baby as much nappy-free time as you can. It’s being in a nappy that causes the problem in the first place. Change your baby’s nappy regularly and as soon as possible after she’s done a wee or a poo. Clean your baby’s genitals and bottom thoroughly after each poo. Check your baby’s skin is clean and dry before putting on a new nappy. Apply a thin layer of ointment to your baby’s bottom after each nappy change.
Yoga during pregnancy can be a valuable tool, not only as a form of exercise but as a way of learning acceptance of change, and maintaining a positive mental outlook as well as a strong and supple body. It can also minimize the common pregnancy symptoms like morning sickness and constipation, ease labour and delivery, and help restore your body after childbirth. Pregnancy Yoga offers a positive method of exercise, and will guide Pregnancy Yoga By Samantha Magee you through your pregnancy and prepare your body and mind for your new arrival. Pregnancy & Babies
Natural Parenting and the First 1000 Days Having children, families and being a parent are all part of one of the most natural things in the world. Yet in modern society we are increasingly making the process unnatural, including more and more gadgets, schedules, targets and expectations. Being a parent can often end up being a high pressure game of comparison, whose child walks first, who has the newest/best equipment, who sleeps through the night in their own room first, which parent drops their child off at school on time, not in a rush, immaculately dressed for work, having eaten breakfast and walked the dog… how to be that parent. People want a family, they want a career, they want a nice house, alone time, and they want it all. Yet with only 168 hours in a week, for many, making it work ends up in exhaustion, disappointment and possible depression.
It is well known that many of the most challenging moments, dilemmas and priorities are early on during your parenting journey. The first 1000 days, from conception to a child’s second birthday, are now accepted as the most significant for development.
For more information see the North Staffs NCT online calendar at http://calendar.nctnorthstaffs.org.uk. www.first1000days.org.uk is the NCT’s new parent support campaign. It aims to help provide parents and parents to be with the support to help them make the most of their child’s first 1000 days as leading scientific evidence shows that this influential period will have an impact on children’s achievements throughout their lives, at school, in the workplace, in society at large, as well as their own future ability as a parent. In Staffordshire there are a thriving group of parents who have decided that they want to get back to more natural ways of parenting as their way of best supporting their families during the first 1000 days.
10
They are striving to incorporate what may have been the only way to do things before cars, washing machines and the internet came into being, but in such a way that fits in and enhances modern ways of living, not simply going back to the dark ages. There are sling wearing parents who don’t have to manoeuvre a pram through a busy shopping centre and have both hands free for both chatting on the phone and putting items in their basket, parents who are breastfeeding for increasing amounts of time, parents who have stopped the time consuming puree making weaning for baby led weaning, parents who have given up the television for all in one rain suits and are spending more and more time outdoors.
They have swopped calpol for homeopathy, school for unschooling, time outs for empathy and validation. It’s not some easy, quick fix to modern parenting difficulties, far from it, close, attached, unconditional, natural parenting is challenging but very rewarding. However, with support from local parents and groups such as the NCT Natural Parenting Group, which runs every 3rd Thursday at Barlaston Children’s Centre, it is one way of really supporting your families through those crucial first 1000 days.

Health
..........and relax
by Lorraine Conkey – We are bombarded with all sorts of articles advising us how to improve our wellbeing, most require a massive effort or cost a fortune. What if you found a way to help yourself naturally, with no real effort and didn’t cost you an arm and a leg? Reiki could be the key; Reiki a form of natural healing rediscovered in the early 19th century in Japan, Reiki called by other names, has been used for centuries to help with everyday aches, pains and emotional issues. Reiki simply put is a form of hands on healing which everyone is capable of achieving. Mothers naturally calm their children by holding and touching their child with the intention of love and wellbeing – that is a form of Reiki As adults, we can try to do the same.
Have a go at one or two of these simple exercises to help. You may like it.... Quick Energiser
Sleep Help
The following exercise is a good way of replenishing depleted energy during the day. A few minutes spent will be rewarded with feelings of refreshment and renewed energy.
If you cannot get to sleep at night this exercise will encourage the deep relaxation you need.
Find a comfortable place to sit or lay down close your eyes and relax.
Get comfortable in your normal sleeping position laying on either your back or side
Put your left hand over your third chakra (solar plexus). Place your right hand directly underneath on your second chakra (your stomach)
Now place your right hand on your forehead and your left hand on your stomach. Relaxing by being aware of how your stomach rises and falls as you breathe
Let your mind drift and rest. No special effort is needed. Stay in this position for 10- 15 minutes.
Stay in this position for as long as you need.
You will feel rejuvenated and refreshed with vital energy.
Reiki will generate a feeling of deep relaxation and aid in falling asleep.
Simple meditation Have you heard people discussing meditation and haven’t a clue where to start. Do think it’s too difficult to clear your mind. Well you don’t have too. The art of learning to meditate is easier than you think you probably have meditated in the past, you just haven’t realised it. How many times have you caught yourself ‘staring into space,’ lost in thought looking at the sea, wistfully looking to the bottom of the garden, gazing into the river, woods or sky, well that’s what you are doing, MEDITATING. Once you realise this you are well on your way to consciously making it happen. Mediating is a great way to relax and allow tension and stress to disappear. Make yourself comfortable either sitting or lying down whichever you prefer. Play some relaxation music if you wish. Focus loosely on a tree, the sky, a pot plant, your garden; it’s easier a first to have this focal point to concentrate on. Breathe deeply, consciously, place your hands on your stomach and let yourself relax; and let yourself daydream. If your mind is racing away with various issues and unending list of tasks; that’s OK, when you are relaxed in this way you find solutions to these problems and concerns.
www.StaffordReiki.co.uk will be conducting Reiki First and Second Degree courses during the summer

Education & Clubs
Get a HEAD start
Our head teachers’ column written by Harvey Trump - Head Teacher at St Dominic’s High School for Girls & St Dominic’s Prep School, Brewood.
Changes - Will they make a difference? The Early Years reforms announced recently from the Education and Childcare Minister Elizabeth Truss, received a lot of press coverage, particularly regarding changes to ratios in the government reports. Central to the announcement was the idea of increasing ratios, the first real change since the 1970s and developing a better, qualified team of staff. In principle, super ideas, as the cost of child care could be reduced and the staff looking after our children even better qualified. This has implications for the responsibilities that Local Authorities have for Early Years education and I am sure would lead to more legislative changes. However, many individuals, nurseries and larger organisational chains providing child care to those not of school age have not come out in support of the ideas. It is possibly intended that Nurseries could relax their ratios when and if more qualified staff are present. In the case of one-year-olds, the legally allowed staff-to-child ratios would rise from the current 1:3 to 1:4 for one year olds and under, and for our 2 year olds the ratio would change to 1:6 from 1:4, with further changes dependent on relevant more qualified staff being available. Similar increases are evident for Childminders too. Whilst I am sure we all welcome a better educated staff, this in turn could see higher salaries as a result of better training and improved training. So the changes in ratio to make child care cheaper will simply be absorbed in better wages for a more highly trained staff; so how much change would we see? I am, like many, most suspicious of changing the present ratios without considering parents’ feelings regarding safety and the supervision of our children. As a Head of a school I will certainly not be looking to adhere to any changes in ratio. All of our staff are at least Level 3 qualified and the ratios ensure quality care and an individualised approach to the key foundation stones that are laid in the educating of our youngest charges. Do you want them to reach their full potential in an environment that promotes a creative curriculum, imaginative play and a strong education base as they learn their alphabet or number sequencing? Equally important for which there is no substitute is that extra pair of hands to help do up coats, pick up someone who has fallen over or just give a cuddle.

Are Over-Populated Classrooms Preventing Your Child From Achieving Their Full Potential? Lyme Vale Independent School Offers an Alternative: Allowing your Child to Discover their Dreams. We established in September 2012 due to an ever increasing sense of dissatisfaction among local parents concerned by the quality of education their children received from some local schools. We listened to parent’s concerns and built to develop a learning environment engineered around the needs of a 21st Century student. It is universally acknowledged that each child has their own independent approach to learning and failure to recognise this can lead to frustration and feelings of inadequacy within a bright and brilliant child. We allow every single one of our pupils to fully engage with their lessons, without fear of reprisal from an extended peer group. Our focus is on the subjects that really matter, that can be applied universally. At least an entire day a week is dedicated to pure scientific study. We have a highly flexible program of learning that enables the theoretical to be reinforced with practical application, cementing a holistic understanding of both approaches. If you would like to see the dramatic difference that can be made with smaller classroom sizes and one to one learning. To schedule a FREE assessment day call 01782 619065
