Editor’s welcome I have recently taken on a rather crazy, but wonderful adventure in my attempt to show my little one the wonders of the natural world. We have chosen the Boat House Lifestyle, where I find myself lost between the dilemmas of being part of an ecosystem and working the ins and outs of this machine that I call home. So, I sit here shrouded in the kaleidoscope lights of autumn leaves reflecting off the canal, waiting for winter with eager anticipation. I get to see the changing of the worlds between summer and winter in a whole new way. At that, I say to you, ‘See the beauty in every moment that surrounds you, for there is much beauty to see.’’ I think if we all face forward with that attitude, it will be a Christmas we hold dear until the end of our days. Grammar schools! Why the controversy? There are 164 Grammar schools in the UK and currently there is much debate about Theresa May’s proposal for expansion of selective schools. In this article we will briefly state both sides of the argument and leave you the parent to make an informed decision.
ARGUMENTS FOR Educational standards - Currently the UK

is lagging behind countries like Finland, Germany, Netherlands and Poland in the Worlds League Table for numeracy and literacy. We currently rank 20th out of 76 countries, with 20% of student failing to meet the required level of basic skills in math and English. Theresa May’s proposal for the expansion of grammar schools would mean that fewer children who would otherwise be deemed to have failed the 11 plus exams, would now gain entry into the selective system.
Social mobility - Children from low income families who attend grammar schools have an opportunity to raise their aspirations alongside children from more affluent backgrounds thereby creating a more upwardly mobile society. The late Sir Chris Woodhead, former Chief Inspector of Schools stated that “grammar schools have contributed more to social mobility than any other institution this country has known” Discipline
Grammar schools foster a culture of high attainment away from the distractions of disruptive pupils in some schools with little or no desire to learn. Teachers in non-selective schools have a greater challenge in the area of discipline, as a result of mixed ability classes.
Culture
Smart children can be exposed to bullying for doing well where a culture of “it’s not cool to be smart” exists. The competitive nature of selective schools ensures that high achievers are always celebrated.
Parental demand
The huge demand for grammar schools can be seen in the sheer numbers of children sitting the 11+ exams. There are many aspirational parents who are prepared to motivate their children and make significant sacrifices towards getting their child into a grammar school.
Ethnicity bias
Research carried out in 2008 by the DOE found that low-attaining ethnic groups are underrepresented in grammar schools.
Value Add
In terms of adding value to the child, it is widely accepted that comprehensive schools add significantly more value than grammar schools by way of raising the performance levels of a child from his/ her entry level to the time they leave the school.
Psychological effect
Preparation for the 11plus exams can be extremely stressful for both parents and children. With the majority of children unable to secure a grammar school place, some of them are adversely affected by failing the 11plus exam, so should it be abolished.
Poor assessment tool
The 11plus exam could be said to be unrepresentative of a child’s true ability as cognitive development continues well past the age of 11. Late developers are therefore disadvantaged. To summarise, whilst the proposal of expanding grammar schools will go a long way to fulfilling the extremely high demand for grammar school places, it is worth bearing in mind that a study by York University found that the average performance of GCSE pupils who go to comprehensive schools is as good as that of able pupils who go to grammar schools. It is important that parents consider their child’s temperament and natural abilities as not all children thrive in highly competitive grammar school environment. Should you opt to put your child through the 11plus process, it is imperative that your child is well prepared to be in with a chance of securing a coveted grammar school place. Like many parents, we wait with bated breath for the outcome of Theresa May’s plans for the expansion of grammar schools.
Increased individual successes
Grammar schools consistently deliver excellent results as can be seen in the league tables, because teachers are working with high achieving children who thrive on competition and can therefore push them harder to achieve top results.
ARGUMENTS AGAINST Those who vehemently disagree with the expansion of grammar schools put forward the following points:
Social mobility
In terms of grammar schools benefitting bright children from underprivileged background, only 2.6 per cent of grammar school pupils are eligible for free schools means, which is significantly lower than the average figure of 14.9 percent across all schools. It has been argued that the current grammar school system is skewed in favour of the middle class who can afford private 11plus tuition.

You will need 250g soft butter or margarine 140g caster sugar 1 egg 2 tsp vanilla extract 300g plain flour 1.

You will need 3 tsp honey 1½ half packets dried yeast 800g plain flour 1½ tsp salt 6 tbsp olive oil 1.

6 tbsp baking powder 2 egg whites Coarse sea salt for sprinkling Red Leicester and yellow Cheddar.
Mix together one of the tablespoons full of honey with 500 ml warm water in a measuring jug and add the yeast. Stir it until the yeast has completely dissolved and becomes a little foamy. Then in a bowl, mix together the flour and the salt. Add the oil, the yeast and water mixture and the rest of the honey and work with a wooden spoon and then hands to make a dough. Now comes the fun part. Put the ball of dough onto a floured board or work surface and let the kids get kneading. It needs about ten minutes, adding a bit more flour as you go if it gets too sticky. Return the dough to the bowl and cover with a tea towel and set in a warm place to rise for about 1 hour. Take the dough out and knead all over again for five minutes this time. Then break the dough up into little balls – you should make 24. Roll each one out into a long rope, then bring the ends together and twist it twice near the top of the loop to make a pretzel shape. A little practice makes it perfect. Let them rest for 15 minutes. Next, you have to poach the pretzels – this is what gives them their fluffy inside. Put the baking soda in a large pan of water, brig to the boil, then poach each pretzel on each side for just around 15 seconds. Work in batches. Finally, lay them on a flat baking tray lined with baking parchment, brush with egg white and sprinkle with coarse salt and then bake at 450 F 220 C Gas 6 for 15 minutes.

Cream together the butter and sugar, then add the yolk from the egg and the vanilla extract. Gradually add the flour and keep mixing until it forms a ball of dough. Kids can do this with their hands. Roll the dough out of a floured surface and use a variety of Christmas cookie cutters to make the shapes – stars, diamonds and hearts are all good. Bake for 12-15 minutes (gas4, 190C 375 F). Once cool, mix the icing sugar with a teaspoon of lemon juice and a little water, until it is easy to pour but still thick. Use a piping bag to make decorations on each and leave to dry in a cool place. Finally, place a selection of the cookies into a Kilner jar and decorate with a Christmas ribbon, bells and a label.

Put the chocolate pieces in a pudding basin and set it over a pan of hot water, with the double cream. Bring to a simmer and then turn the heat down low.You’ll need to supervise your child at this stage, as steam can burn. Stir with a wooden spoon until the chocolate has melted into the cream. Add the vanilla, take off the heat and chill for one hour. It should then be firm but still loose enough to work with. With a teaspoon, each take a small amount of the chocolate paste and roll it in a ball between your palms. Then roll it in the coconut and you have little snowball shaped truffles. Place each completed one inside a mini cake case. Pop some inside a jam jar to give as a gift and add little playful touches such as tiny robins and Christmas trees that you use as cake decorations.
