Giraffe Café opens at Tesco in Sutton Giraffe café, an all day eating experience, is now open at Tesco Extra on Oldfields Road, Sutton. Open from breakfast through to dinner, their menu features fresh, seasonal ingredients and includes both classic dishes from around the world and dishes with a ‘Giraffe’ twist, for those with adventurous palates. Pull the Other launches acting company – Sign up now Pull the Other Theatre Education launch their highly-anticipated Acting Company. Junior (8 – 12 years) and Senior (13 – 16 years) ensembles will be held weekly at Epsom Playhouse from 9 September 2014.

Clubs, Classes & Activities Stagecoach Coulsdon in film drama Seven students from Stagecoach Coulsdon had great fun filming a corporate training video at local locations such as Godstone Farm and Diver’s Cove.

For most of them, it was their first professional acting job. The students aged between six and 10 were cast because they attend their local Stagecoach Theatre school in Coulsdon. Principal Zoe McCready said, “my husband and I still work professionally. When an industry contact asked if we could provide children for their shoot, we jumped at the chance”. The video will be used to train employees at a well known communications company. That meant the students had to learn a very tricky corporate script. They filmed over half term “Ben absolutely loved his first experience of filming and the team made it so enjoyable – it couldn’t have been a better first introduction for him.” said Deborah Roberts whose son Ben aged 7 played “Tommy” the Chief Technical Officer, or CTO. Not all children come to Stagecoach to become professional performers. Zoe said, “many attend to build confidence and life skills. Scarlett who played “Imogen” for example can’t decide if she would like to be an actress or a scientist. Whatever job they choose in the future, we want them to be confident and have excellent communication skills so that all options are open for them to explore”. 10 things your child should be

able to do when they begin school by Sarah Butters

gets misplaced. Starting school can make even the most confident child feel a little lost. If they can locate important places, it will make them feel more in control.

If your child starts ‘big school’ this September, it’s time to start preparing. Forget force feeding them phonics, this is about getting your child ready for the social challenges of school. The more prepared they are, the easier they will settle and the more they’ll get out of those early days.

Teachers look for this in the early stages of Reception to evaluate dexterity. Get crafty over the next few months.

Imagine the scene. One teacher faced with thirty children and their coats. By the time each child is zipped up and wrapped up, playtime is over. If your child is able to go some way to helping, they may get some fresh air.

It’s important your child understands what’s expected of them when they arrive at school. They need to know hitting, kicking, biting and hair pulling will not be tolerated. Not only will it bring your child to the attention of the head teacher for all the wrong reasons, but it will make your child unpopular with their classmates. Reputations earned in the early days of school tend to stick and can be hard to shake off.

If you can see buttons on trousers and skirts becoming a problem during the post PE change, invest in elasticated waistbands. These will also help during any ‘last minute’ toilet visits. Avoid tights in the early days – they can also lead to unnecessary bathroom accidents. With shoes, laces and buckles are a no-no. Stick to Velcro fastenings which your child can do themselves.

2. Are they used to sharing? Sharing is a difficult lesson for a child to learn, especially if they only start learning it at school. But it’s a vital lesson if you want your child to settle in and make friends easily. A child who refuses to take turns and share wil find it hard to make friends, and before long that child becomes isolated. Start to make a point of praising your pre-schooler for sharing his bag of figures or his last few sweets.

Giving your child the skills to communicate with their teacher means they will be able to have some control. How else will they ask to go to the toilet? If they don’t understand how to get the attention of an adult, how will they let their teacher know they don’t understand their work? A child who can communicate will get more out of the school day than a child who is unwilling to speak up. Encourage your child to ask and even practice with a raised hand at home to make sure they understand the most appropriate way of getting a grown-up’s attention.

10. Can they follow simple instructions?

The school day is full of instructions. Your child will be asked to put coats on pegs, walk quietly in corridors and sit cross-legged on the carpet for circle time. If a child is used to following instructions, they will avoid being reprimanded. The more time a teacher dedicates to repeating instructions and encouraging co-operation, the less time there is for teaching. Start giving your child simple tasks – perhaps helping with the weekly shop or with some straight forward jobs around the house. It will prepare them for school life.

Education Is your child getting stressed about the eleven-plus? To perform at your best in any situation, whether at a sports event or in an exam like the eleven-plus it’s really important to do two things. The first is to prepare by practising. The second is to be in the right frame of mind.

Unfortunately exams make us stressed and the expectation around this exam in particular can be quite hard on such young children. Will they get to go to the best school? Will they get to go with their friends? Many parents pay for additional coaching for their children but to date there has been little to help children understand and cope with the stress of it all.

Mythical Maze is theme for 2014 Summer reading Challenge Children’s reading can take a dip during the long summer holidays, so why not take part in this year’s Summer Reading Challenge? Children aged four to 11 are encouraged to read six books during the holiday, whether they are stories, fact, joke, picture or audio books – it doesn’t matter as long as they are borrowed from the library.

What is Hypnobirthing all about? experience as nature intended. When you are relaxed your intuition tells you what is going on in your body and the baby can flow out much more easily.

By Paola Bagnall Hypnobirthing means the use of hypnosis for birth. We are all in hypnosis, without knowing it, about 60% of the day so this is something that comes naturally to us all. It occurs just before we fall asleep and just as we awaken. Other examples include losing track of time when reading a good book or when watching something interesting on television or when we do anything we enjoy doing. Have you ever driven from A to B, arrived at your destination and not remembered how you drove there? If so, you were in the day-dreaming state of natural hypnosis.

Hypnobirthing is not just for the mumto-be. It is also for the dad-to-be who plays a vital role in helping his partner maintain her self-hypnosis during the birth. Hypnobirthing helps you to:• Put things in their true perspective • Relax, stay calm and in control – in a calm, relaxed state your muscles and skin can stretch easily and naturally in a pain-free way • Stay focused on the process that your body is going through and be in tune with what your body and your intuition are telling you

In essence, hypnosis is simply a state of heightened relaxation and altered awareness. In hypnosis you are awake, aware of what is going on around you and you are in control.

So hypnobirthing is the deliberate use of hypnosis to allow you to tap into your inner resources, which we all have in our subconscious minds, to create feelings of well-being.

These feelings of well-being are created by using special breathing techniques to maintain calmness, positive affirmations, visualisation, colour for relaxation and healing and of course self-hypnosis which is created by using all these techniques. When you are relaxed you cannot feel fear at the same time. When you are relaxed, your body produces serotonin, a morphine-based hormone, that makes you feel good about yourself and is your body’s natural epidural. I call this hormone the ‘happy hormone’. When you are anxious the body responds by producing the panic hormone, adrenaline, which causes all the skeletal muscle to contract, the heart to beat faster and your breathing to increase. So you feel tense, scared and you do not allow your body to work as it should do, especially when giving birth to your baby. I am a biologist, as well as a hypnotherapist, and I feel that today we have lost sight of the fact that the female body is, in fact, perfectly designed to give birth naturally. When you are in a relaxed, hypnotic state then you work with your body to have a wonderfully natural birth creating a magical

How tO Burn up a child’s energy

The long summer holidays are approaching and, if your kids are anything like mine, after just an hour indoors they’ll be climbing the walls. But don’t despair. There are so many things to do over the holidays, from play centres to sports clubs to creating your own fun, and many of them are free. Check out our guide to burning off some of your kids’ energy. Why not try a summer club, class or activity? From cricket to tennis, football to drama, athletics to trampolining or even dry slope skiing, there are hundreds around. Many clubs and classes offer free trials over the summer break – why not try one, and then book an ongoing class for September?

Local museums include Museum of Croydon; Bourne Hall Museum, Ewell; Honeywood Museum, Carshalton; Little Holland House, Carshalton Beeches and Whitehall, Cheam. Or go up to London and visit the Vikings at the British Museum, go for treasure By Joanna Parry hunts in the Geffrye Museum gardens, go on an expedition at the Horniman Museum, explore army life at the National Army Museum.

Or the lido… Often inexpensive, lidos can make a great day out when the sun is shining. Some parks also have paddling pools, (see box). If the weather is not so great why not try an indoor swimming pool or go-karting or even ice skating? Indoor play centres can seem pricey, but if you get there early before they get busy and stay for most of the day, they can be great value for money. Make up your own games. It’s creative, you’ll have great fun with your kids, and it’s completely free. Organise a treasure hunt in the park, have a trampolining competition in the garden or set up an obstacle course, invite some friends over and give them a scavenger hunt to get stuck into. Go geocaching (similar to a treasure hunt, where you use a GPS to find a hidden treasure), divide your brood into two teams and start a water fight, fly a kite, pitch a tent and fill the paddling pool, or run your own Sports Day If it’s bucketing down there’s still plenty of fun to be had (and energy to be expended) indoors. Have a Games Day and challenge your kids to get through a number of board games or table tennis sessions in a day. Make dens or castles out of cardboard boxes, then decorate them. Have a disco – all you need is your best dancing queen outfit and an iPod. Treasure hunts can be just as fun indoors as out, or you can even get the kids running up and down the stairs if you’re really stuck. Make a movie or build a den or just put on the wellies and waterproofs and go

splashing about in the rain

The real trick to have peace, bizarrely, is to have more children at your place. A group of children is more likely to engage in games and run around than one who is stuck at home with you.

Visit a museum. From the British Museum to the V&A, museums offer a huge range of activities during the summer holidays, almost all of which are free. Museums don’t have to be quiet or sedentary activities – most of them run children’s workshops throughout the holidays, some of which can be very energetic.

Don’t forget the park. Acres of room to run around in, trees to climb and most with children’s playgrounds. Best of all, they are free.

A game that comes in an egg box. You roll a dice, complete a challenge and, if you win, choose an egg. Roll the second dice to see where you have to hold the egg on your body without dropping it – under your armpit, between your legs. Round continues until someone drops an egg.

This is the easier version of Pandemic. It is great way to get kids to work together to move around the sinking island and collect the treasure as a team. They either win or lose together so no fights necessary.

(Both games are quite similar) Suitable for all ages Time: under 10 mins per round Both these games are lovely reaction games that are a bit easier than Jungle Speed (did you play that one – with a wooden totem?). Think Snap but more varied. Dobble more widely available.

Like Jenga but way more fun because you are stacking different animals on each other and a dice adds to the fun by randomising what happens at each turn.
