Coronation Day! Thanks to a certain Disney modern classic, I think we have a generation of children who very much get the concept of celebrating a new monarch being crowned. Which is good, because that’s one less thing to explain. Frozen: all is forgiven. There are tons of coronation events for families to enjoy across Leeds and West Yorkshire – find details on page 13.

Book a cricket camp for summer holiday fun Are you looking for a fun, active holiday camp for your child? Accomplish Sports Academy is running a series of cricket and rounders camps during the May Half Term and throughout the Summer Holidays.
Calling young musicians! Leeds Junior Conservatoire (LJC) is a space for young musicians aged 8-18 from Yorkshire and the North. Through sessions every term-time Saturday, LJC offers a nurturing environment for young people to develop their creativity, connected by their passion for music.
Alternating between Calverley Cricket Club, Horsforth Hall Park Cricket Club and Rawdon Cricket Club, they include hard ball and soft ball groups, and are for school age children from Year 2 to Year 10 (age 6 to 15). LJC is based at Leeds Conservatoire which is in the heart of Leeds’ Cultural Quarter. Dino Day in Bradford On Saturday, June 3, Ritchie the Raptor and Emily Bronty the Brontosaurus will be in Centenary Square in Bradford City Centre ready to meet visitors. Children can become a trainee ranger at the Dino Basecamp where the Chief Ranger will guide them through Jurassic knowledge and train them in what to do in an emergency situation – a dinosaur break out! Plus, there’s a chance to meet a life-sized baby T-Rex at 8ft tall. The free event will have ranger training and dinosaur meet and greets taking part throughout the day. We’re going on the Leeds Bear Hunt! Leeds Hospitals Charity is going on a Bear Hunt this Summer to raise money for Leeds Children’s Hospital. Leeds Bear Hunt will see Leeds Hospitals Charity team up with art trail experts, Wild in Art, to create an exciting public art event. From the July 1, 35 giant Bear sculptures will hide in plain sight on the streets of Leeds for ten weeks. Decorated by local and national artists, designers and illustrators, the Bears will form a family-friendly trail for visitors to discover and enjoy. The free event will benefit the whole community, with hundreds and thousands of Leeds residents and visitors expected to join in the fun. Why Bears? Leeds Hospitals Charity is working in partnership with Walker Productions/Lupus Films, the production team behind the stunning animation based on Michel Rosen’s best-selling children’s book, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, published by Walker Books. The message of this wonderful story is about how we deal with our fears. This is reflected in the experience of many children in hospital, who might be scared of the unknown, or possibly the knowledge of what is to come. The Bear sculptures are inspired by the Bear from the awardwinning TV animation and have been commissioned and created just for Leeds. Leeds Bear Hunt will raise money for Leeds Children’s Hospital, funding equipment and technology to provide the best care possible in a welcoming and reassuring environment, with a hospital team that is equipped to support very ill babies and children and families facing their own “Bear”.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Zog on stage Two classic children’s books are coming to the stage of Carriageworks Theatre in May and June. Dive into Eric Carle’s bright and colourful world from 30 May to 3 June. His beloved stories are transformed from page to stage using a menagerie of 75 lovable puppets and charming music.
The sleuth of Bears will be auctioned off on September 28 to raise vital funds for Leeds Children’s Hospital. There are plenty of ways to get involved. You can volunteer to help out on the trail or take your family to Leeds and tackle the trail in the Summer! Upcycling your child’s party By Tamsin Ryan
With everyone trying to watch their pennies and be kinder to our planet, an upcycled party is very on trend! And once you put your mind to it, you’ll be surprised by how much you can do with what you already have at home or what you can pick up second hand or for free on sites such as Facebook, Olio and Freecycle.
TABLEWARE Second hand plates, cups and cutlery from a local charity shop, car boot sale or online marketplace are simple options. Sets can be stored to use each year or you can sell them on afterwards and most likely make your money back. Or take them back to the charity shop; think of it as a donation to a good cause. For the centrepiece, a cake stand is super-easy to make with an upturned teacup, a plate and a little superglue.
PARTY BAG FILLERS
PARTY BAGS Shopping bags from stores can make perfect gift or party bags. With a little imagination, some crafty materials and some glue, these branded shop bags can be transformed into unique, personalised bags. Or make your own: there are some easy video instructions on making a paper bag in the tutorials section on Instagram @planetwrapit.
Make time to make things. Here are some ideas to get you started: scrunchies made from leftover fabric; painted rocks or shells found on the beach; bracelets made from beads from your local scrap store or crayons made from all your kids’ broken ones.
WRAPPING PRESENTS There are so many things you can find around the house that you can use for wrapping gifts: magazine pages, old maps, pieces of sample wallpaper, your kids’ paintings or leftover packing paper. If you’re a dab hand with a sewing machine you could make a fabric drawstring bag from leftover fabric scraps. Alternatively, reuse an old pillowcase or wrap with a piece of fabric, like the Japanese art of Furoshiki.

There really is no need to ever buy new again - look to places such as Facebook and Vinted. Buying second hand is not only better for the planet, it’s so much cheaper and also saves you hours making your own costumes from scratch.

Make your own from last year’s birthday cards, your kids’ drawings, old books passed their best, paper doilies, fabric scraps, pom-poms made from leftover wool or even an old duvet cover. Old bed sheets work well refashioned into tablecloths. They can be painted, tie-dyed or appliquéd in order to tailor them to the party theme and it’s a great activity to get the kids involved in! If you already have a tablecloth you can use, you could make placemats or a table runner from scrap fabrics to match the theme of your party.

Leeds 2023 - this city is our playground LEEDS 2023 is here and letting culture loose in the city! So far, it’s filled Headingley Stadium with art, dancing and music for an opening event to celebrate Leeds and made pop up exhibitions in Trinity and Merrion shopping centres. From May, Part 2 of the programme kicks in and it’s all about Playing. Tickets are now bookable for hundreds of free and pay as you decide events across the city this spring and summer, with more being added daily. Go to Cinder Moor at the end of the month and see a barn being raised in 24 hours with 300 women and girls. Once raised, the WOW Barn becomes home to a two-week festival of comedy, talks, school's activities and music. Get your skates on with Northern Roll Festival, turning the Royal Armouries into a giant roller-skating rink. Check out what’s coming to your local parks, village halls, high streets and shopping centres as a part of My LEEDS Summer, a free, family-friendly three-month festival. Join in with the children of Leeds at Roundhay Park in raising their voices to the night sky in song for Children’s Day: Reimagined. Or sit under the stars with your family for Moon Palace, a magical touring observatory that’s coming to streets and schools from June.
There’s also plenty of playing to get stuck in the classroom with the Creative Learning programme. For KS5 Art and Design students, get ready to unleash the creative director within with international artist Casey Orr and her Saturday Town project. If your little ones are all about wildlife, environment and creativity, there are a number of schools programmes to support that too. And don’t forget to join in at the First Direct Arena in June to celebrate musical talent in our primary schools with Leeds Youth Music Festival. Leeds 2023 came about after the city started a bid to be the 2023 Capital of Culture – a prestigious title given to cities within the EU. After Brexit, Leeds could no longer be considered. Please listen to me! By Tanith Carey When we have non-stop days, it’s easy to lapse into ‘one-waystreet parenting.’ That’s where as the more powerful grownup, you tell your child how to behave. But parenting becomes so much easier when it’s a two-way transaction and you make a conscious effort to listen to what your child has to say as well. As they grow, children are in a constant process of learning to recognise and describe their needs and emotions. However, with their developing vocabulary they can’t always clearly articulate their big feelings so they don’t always feel heard. Children who don’t feel heard often act out how they feel. There could be angry tantrums, strops, defiance or attention-seeking behaviour to force you to pay attention. Sadly, this behaviour has the opposite effect. The good news is that just one simple shift can transform your relationship with your child. Next time your child explodes, understand they are struggling with giant feelings. Rather than thinking about how to discipline them, observe their behaviour with curiosity, followed by empathy. For example, we grown-ups tend to hear repeated requests for the things kids want as whingeing or nagging. Rather than ignoring them, show them you heard them the first time by looking at them, getting down on their level if they are still little, repeating what they have just said and giving them a response that works in that moment, even if it’s an explanation for why you are saying ‘no’. Of course, you can’t be expected to drop everything, every time or give kids whatever they want. Keep some phrases in your back pocket like: ‘I know it’s hard to
wait. I’ll be there soon,’ or ‘I heard you calling me. Give me five minutes while you finish your Lego house.’ Even if it’s not the answer they want to hear, they will ease off once they know the message has got through. Just make sure you stick to your word. This kind of listening is not about giving in or letting them have their own way. It’s about remembering that children are on a steep learning curve towards naming and managing feelings that continues well into their teenage years. Name emotions: Experience shows that the more words you use to name their emotions, the more accurate children will be when describing them.
Listen more than you talk: Once children can be clear about what’s bothering them, often responding with just a nod, an ‘I see’ or ‘That sounds tough’ is enough. Resist the temptation to offer judgement or criticism, even if you think it sounds constructive. It’s often what you don’t say rather than what you do which makes you the best sounding board.
Be interested in what they love: Be curious about what your child has to say, even if you’ve heard the same dinosaur fact one hundred times. If you say: ‘Tell me more,’ your child will open up to you at other times too. If you feel yourself getting bored, go on an adventure to find new facts to fascinate them. Calm your nervous system: When you feel angry or irritated when dealing with your child, whatever you are doing, take a few deep breaths to slow yourself back to empathy mode so you can listen to what they are trying to say. Limit your phone use: Put away your phone during the special one-on-one times with your child, whether it’s bath times, mealtimes or story time. When they don’t have to compete to be heard they can relax into being with you.

Set aside time: Spend regular unhurried time just doing the things they like to do. These ‘emotional deposits’ remind tweens that you like as well as love them and they will be more likely to listen to you at other times. Validate feelings: Simply try to accept and understand how they feel, even if that feels uncomfortable for you. For example, your tween contains their behaviour all day at school. So when they come from school and moan, remember that most of the time you don’t need to do anything except listen. You could ask: ‘Do you need to vent, or do you want suggestions? Either is fine.’

How playgrounds benefit your child As a parent or carer of young children, you’ve no doubt spent many hours sitting or standing in a playground watching your child play or pushing them on a swing. As well as being great for getting kids playing outside, playgrounds also have a range of developmental benefits - not just physical and social but cognitive and emotional too. Unexpected physical benefits Playgrounds provide children with the opportunity to develop their complete physical selves: Swings and climbing frames develop advanced balancing skills and improve their equilibrium for surer footedness. Climbing and running benefit muscle development and weight management. Exposing children to daylight helps stabilise their circadian rhythms which can improve sleep patterns. Playing outside exposes youngsters to more organic bacteria and microbes, which can help build a more robust immune system and an advanced microbiome. The emotional and cognitive benefits Anxiety, self-esteem and introversion are all common issues faced by children. A playground gives them a safe space in which to confront those feelings without judgement or expectation. They can choose to play with the other kids in the castle or observe and learn how they can socialise before taking the first brave steps. Similarly, they can play by themselves on the swings

or slides to reduce their anxiety as they don’t need any help from others to accomplish that (though the kit is designed to encourage engagement and communication). Finally, they can give their self-esteem a boost by being brave enough to try a new piece of equipment or by making a new friend. The playground gives them options. They don’t have to do anything they don’t want to but if they choose to act, it’s almost certain they will experience a benefit. Playground play is also great for developing problem-solving skills, increasing creativity and encouraging critical thinking. Do too many children want to play in the castle? They can work together to create a game and solve the problem. Does everyone want to go on the slide? Well, they can queue and wait their turn, right? No fault divorce: one year on It’s been a year since No Fault Divorce came into force, making the process of applying for divorce easier. Increasingly, people have decided not to use a solicitor to assist them with the process, but as new Head of Family at Emsleys, Rosalind Blaza, explains, not all matters are straightforward and may leave people vulnerable to future financial claims. A Final order of divorce doesn’t cover all matters It is a common belief that by obtaining a Final Order of divorce (previously called a Decree Absolute) that this includes ending all claim on financial matters. However, this isn’t the case. When a Final Order of divorce is obtained, this doesn’t stop a person from pursuing a financial claim against the other, leaving people open to the risk that claims on their assets could be made AFTER the divorce is finalised.
This means that your ex-spouse could come back to claim money or property from you, that they think they are entitled to, should they not remarry. In order to avoid that, it would be necessary to get a Financial Order or a Clean Break Order. Financial orders When a financial settlement has been agreed and a consent order achieved, whether that be amicably or decided by the court (when parties cannot reach an agreement) this prevents either party from pursuing any further financial claims as against the other. This is often termed a clean break order. Do I have assets? Some people may think this situation is not relevant to them; you may think you don’t have any valuable assets, but, whether it is your pension, an inheritance that might come your way, or the increasing value of your home, these assets are all up for potential dispute between divorcing couples. It is all dependent on individual circumstances, even after the divorce is finalised, if you don’t take the appropriate advice to protect these assets.
