Hello Families! Or, should I say… season’s greetings?! I’m already feeling so festive having prepared this very Christmassy issue for you all and the big day won’t be long in coming around! It’s such a magical time of year for families and there are plenty of opportunities over the next few weeks to make some festive memories to last a lifetime. I know that our calendar is already filling up with all the markets, street celebrations, pantos, and craft sessions… not to mention a visit to see Santa himself! Before I wish Autumn away, though, for Guy Fawkes’ Night there are lots of brilliant fireworks displays to choose from, and even a firework-free bonfire event at Cambo if the noisy displays aren’t your thing. The eagle-eyed among you may have already spotted that Families Fife, Tayside & Crieff magazine is looking for a new editor. Could it be you?! Get in touch if you’re interested. I have loved my time in the role, and envisaged doing this for quite some time, but changes to Mr Editor’s job mean that my time is much more limited now and it’s time to hand over to someone new. Spread the word! Enjoy all the lovely events and celebrations over the coming weeks, keep safe with fireworks if you’re around them and stay cosy as the nights draw in. ‘Instructions Not Supplied’ Julie Otto is a professional golfer, based in Fife, who has represented her country in international events. After adopting 3 young boys, she and her husband, Steve, quickly discovered that their children were different from others, and not just because they were adopted. ‘Instructions Not Supplied’ is the inspiring story of how they and their sons rose to the challenges they faced, including autism, attention deficit hyper-activity disorder, foetal alcohol syndrome, attachment disorder and sensory issues, and came together as a family like no other. The book describes with honesty many situations when the behaviour of the children challenges the
adults around them. It explores the process of diagnosis and the difficulty of getting the right support both for the children and their parents. The book will be invaluable to prospective adopters and adoptive parents as well as natural parents of children with additional support needs. For practitioners, it gives an insight into the family life of those parenting such children and how best to support them. Read our interview with Julie on page 5.
The 1st & 2nd of September saw the Dewars Centre in Perth host Tabletop Scotland, a games convention which attracted families and gamers of all stripes, from Scotland and further afield, to play board games, card games and roleplaying games together throughout the weekend. With an attendance of over 1,500, those who came along were entertained by exhibitors and events catering for all their gaming needs. David Wright, Convention Director, said “It was amazing to see so many families of all ages come and play games, many of them completely new to modern board games, but most importantly seeing them have
fun and really enjoy themselves was particularly special. The HABA Games team were busy hosting our family zone the whole weekend, demonstrating games and helping people discover this hobby for the first time. The fun didn’t stop there, with many families taking part in our Dungeons & Dragons events and board game tournaments like Carcassonne and Karuba.” Attendee Leroy, aged 4, said, ‘I liked playing the games. My favourite was a dragon game where you got crystals and a volcano’. Leroy’s mum, Lisa, said, ‘The organisation was fantastic; such a smooth process’ and felt the event was ‘relaxed and unhurried’ with ‘plenty of age-appropriate games’. Tabletop Scotland returns to the Dewars Centre on the 24th & 25th of August 2019 with tickets on sale from the 31st of January.

The volunteer team running the Perth & District branch for the National Childbirth Trust knows just how life changes when raising a family. They aim to make life a little easier and give up many hours to support those in the parenthood journey. Bumps@ThePub is a unique opportunity for mums-to-be to meet before becoming parents. Held monthly in The Cellar Bar, Perth, new and familiar faces gather to chat to others expecting around the same time. In 2 years they have introduced many future best friends who say parenthood would have been a much
lonelier experience had they not made it along to these social evenings. And it’s not just for first time mums either, they are delighted to meet existing mums. The team also regularly organise First Aid Courses, led by the British Red Cross, to give parents vital guidance that may become life saving. Anyone can book to attend. Simply contact the branch for more information. Always looking at who they could support, a recent addition is an online support group for parents with twins, triplets and quadruplets. This complements the two weekly groups: Bumps & Babies up to 12 months and NCTeenies, an activity packed group for 0-5 year olds.

We are lucky enough here at Editor HQ to get the opportunity to review some new children’s books every so often. Rory is four, Hamish is two, and both love Cyril and Pat by Emily Gravett. It has earned more than a few reads! Cyril is the only squirrel in Lake Park, and he’s very lonely. Until one day he meets Pat – Pat the big, grey... ‘other squirrel’. Cyril and Pat have lots of adventures and fun together and Cyril is so pleased he’s made a friend. But everyone is adamant that Cyril and Pat simply cannot be friends, and they soon reveal why: Pat, as the reader has known all along, is actually a RAT! But Cyril’s life turns out to be a lot duller and quite a bit scarier without Pat by his side, and in the end the two friends learn that some things
are more important than being the same, or listening to others. A lovely story about overcoming the fear of unacceptance and prejudices. A particular favourite part of sharing this story together is looking at the illustration of the dog chasing the duo around the park, and the trails they all follow… if you can keep up! www.familiesfife.co.uk
PARENT TO PARENT Julie Otto lives in Fife, Scotland, with her husband Steve, their three children, four dogs, three cats and two tortoises. An accomplished golfer, who has represented her country in international events, she’s found life very different since adopting her boys. Instructions Not Supplied is Julie’s account of her family’s experience in adopting three children, each of whom turned out to have additional support needs, and the challenges they have faced along the way. A story of adoption, autism and coming together as a family, the book is a unique insight into the twin challenges of adoption and disability. Families Editor Rachel Davidson met with Julie at home to discuss her book, her family and her life in Fife.
What do you like about living in East Fife? The view is stunning in this part of Fife. And I love the beaches. We’ve found ourselves here. It’s beautiful, quiet and not too busy. It’s not great, sometimes, in that it can be an enormous distance to go for specialist support for our children’s needs. Favourite places to go as a family? Craigtoun Park, beaches (our favourite would have to be Kingsbarns), and Cairnie Fruit Farm when it’s not too busy. Tell us about your family Steve comes from the south of England, as do I. We have been up here a long time, through work. Steve’s a scientist, I’m a golf-pro. We’re just a normal family. Well, maybe not quite normal - he worked for NASA, I played golf at an international level - but we don’t look at our children and think, ‘They have to be the next professional golfer or the next scientist.’ I think that was quite a barrier for us during
the adoption process as they kept thinking we were going to want our children to excel at something, but actually we just want them to do what they can do, not what we can do. Our sons are Connor, Stephen and Harry. Connor is into engines, cars, and understanding how things work, Stephen loves dinosaurs and sharks and Harry is interested in WWI and WW2. All three of the boys have ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) diagnoses. Stephen and Harry also have ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). Stephen is learning disabled, with attachment disorder and dyslexia. Harry has Foetal Alcohol Syndrome. What prompted you to write the book? I wanted to be a voice for change. Having adopted 3 children in 3 years, and now living every day with the range of additional support needs that we do, we have such a lot of experience of the challenges that face adopters and those parenting children with additional support needs. I realised that if you print something, you get your voice, you get to say what you want to say and get your message out there. It’s a very honest account of the facts. Were you worried about anyone reading it? I’m not worried about anyone’s reaction, because it’s fact. There’s a couple of people that might read it and recognise themselves, and perhaps wouldn’t be too happy, but they aren’t named and I doubt
...a child with additional support needs is not just the weird kid in the corner. They are a child that has a disability that is not known to the world.
they’ll read it. Fife Council have received it well and invited me to speak at their adopters’ conference in November, which is a real positive. I’d like to help improve the experience of other adopters. Who do you hope will read the book? I hope that it’s an eclectic audience, including prospective adopters, to give them an idea of what could be ahead of them; existing adopters that are perhaps having some issues of their own; natural parents of children with needs; professionals, including teachers. Connor’s headteacher has read it because Connor walked into his office and demanded a tenner for a book! I’d like people to find some solace, help or direction in it. What advice would you give someone wanting to adopt? Ask lots of questions! We were afraid to because we didn’t want them to say no to us, which wouldn’t have happened of course, but we just wanted
a child and didn’t ask. Challenge the information presented to you and ask the hard questions. What message would you want to give to neurotypical children and their parents? That a child with additional support needs is not just the weird kid in the corner. They are a child that has a disability that is not known to the world. Just because you are autistic doesn’t mean you don’t have friends, you just need understanding from others. Stephen’s friends in particular are a very special group of friends, and have a patience level with him that is different from other children. What advice would you give to someone who recognises their own children in your children? Similarities in behaviour or anything else doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s autism. But if you do have concerns, find yourself a friendly GP, someone you can trust and talk it through. Don’t just sit on concerns, talk to other people and don’t hold it within.

Winter Fun – Indoors! During the winter months, families often spend more time indoors. It’s tempting to allow the kids to while away the time on devices or playing on their Xbox. But there are ways of keeping your kids off their screens and still having fun, even within the four walls of your own home. Here’s a Families guide to some fun bad-weather-day activities Make a Cardboard Town Get hold of a giant cardboard box or add lots of small ones together to make a town using large felt tips or paint. Let their imaginations run riot, and they can add cars and wooden/plastic people to make it more realistic. Set Up an Indoor Treasure Hunt Write some cryptic clues and hide a treasure trail of items for them to find. They may want to design one for you to do too! Make Slime Batten down the hatches, get the aprons out and be prepared
for a tsunami of a mess in your kitchen. This activity is satisfyingly messy and great fun. Get your children to research how to make the best slime or play-doh on YouTube (it’s for educational purposes after all). Get Cooking If you aren’t keen on the slime idea, get the kids to cook you a meal instead. This is satisfying for them but also a treat for you (hopefully!). Suggest they plan a three-course meal for dinner. Get them to design a menu and research how to make the dishes online or refer to some recipe books. I think getting them to look in the fridge and come up with some dishes with ingredients you already have teaches them a great a life skill too. A pasta sauce or an apple crumble are tasty and rewarding dishes, yet are simple fro kids to make. If you have smaller children baking something simple like fairy cakes or biscuits would obviously be more appropriate. Play Cards Teach the kids the card games you used to play as a child. If you can’t get them interested in Patience or Gin Rummy, look up some cool card tricks for them to learn and show their friends. Make Special Cards Get out the art supplies and card and make some Christmas and birthday cards. Why don’t you

get creative with Origami? My kids love making butterflies and birds and sticking them onto cards. Have a Kitchen Disco My favourite thing to do on a rainy day is to have a party in the kitchen. Choose the most appropriate room in your house and sort a great playlist of music that will get the whole family moving. Have a ‘dance off’ with your kids. Make a Magazine Set up a news desk in the house and decide what the magazine is going to be about. Think up a great name and get someone in the “team” to design the front cover. Send out some roving reporters to write some news stories and create some fun features. The whole family can get involved!
Set up a Racing Track Use masking tape to create a huge car-racing track around the house or living room. Get the toy cars out and race away! Get Active You could make an indoor obstacle course or try hula hooping or skipping in the living room. To make it more interesting, do some timed challenges.You could also create indoor hopscotch with masking tape. Our Guide to this year’s Christmas Pantos and Shows Sleeping Beauty set to cast a magical spell on the Alhambra Theatre this Christmas The Alhambra Theatre pantomime for 2018 is the magical tale of Sleeping Beauty, starring Fife’s favourite Dame, Billy Mack. The show will feature an all-star cast from stage and screen, along with fantastic costumes, live orchestra, spectacular sets & special effects, all with a special twist. The production will again encompass all the elements of a traditional family pantomime that Alhambra audiences have come to love and expect. Bruce Strachan is Director for this year’s Alhambra panto production. ‘I am very much looking forward to working with the amazing cast. The show will deliver a slightly different take on the magical fairy tale. Our audiences are going to have a sparkling time this Christmas at the Alhambra & it’s set to be fun for the whole family’. Hear about her 11-month imprisonment on Castle Island and her frequent earlier visits to this corner of Scotland which included a near capture at the foot of Benarty Hill and an encounter in Kinross with the Protestant reformer, John Knox. Sun 9 Dec LOCH LEVEN SANTA RUN Loch Leven’s Larder, Kinross 8am-12pm Loch Leven’s Larder, in association with Tiger Fitness Ltd, bring their first festive Santa Run to this popular venue. There will be 2 event distances to choose from – 5km and 2.5km, both starting at 1pm. All entrants will receive a Santa suit upon registration at Loch Leven’s Larder (the 2.5km runners will also receive a Santa hat). Santa Claus will start the race and set all participants off, together, along the new 2.5km Parkrun pathway around Loch Leven and Channel Farm. The 2.5km entrants will complete 1 lap of the course, with the 5k runners collecting a Santa hat before completing their second lap. All runners will receive a bespoke medal, water, mince pie, Christmas shortbread/ cake along with some festive punch. The event is open to all ages and abilities, making it an excellent family event. The course is suitable for wheelchair uses and even buggies.
