It’s All Happening in Rosyth

osyth Community Market turned one in April, seeing thousands of people visit the market to pick up local foods, arts and craft products since starting. With over 45 stalls packed into Parkgate Institute the market has grown to become Southwest Fife’s largest community market. An area expanded this year is making the market a place to visit with the whole family, giving the kids something fun and more importantly free to do. June saw the first kids corner

with free outdoor activities and crafts such as pebble painting, planting and quilling. There are also bouncy castles and face painting available for a small charge. Let’s support our local businesses and buy local. ’m a trained PE teacher, Founder of the dance fitness company Highland Hustle with classes all over Scotland and also in Canada, US and Australia. With three children I know how fitting exercise into daily life can seem impossible. Yet, research shows exercise can help with stress, boost our moods and give us more energy and reduces our risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer. But did you know that the activity levels of a child’s parent, particularly the mother, has a direct link on how active a child is both now and as an adult? So why not try to involve your child in exercise with you? It can be really good fun and rewarding for both of you. Turn going out for a walk in the country from boring to a challenge by introducing a treasure hunt and collect 5 things that you can make a picture with later or take a picnic to eat half way. If your child is old enough to go on a scooter or bike then consider power walking with them on a traffic free path. Build up your stamina gradually (walk a minute, jog for 30 seconds to start) and before you know it you can be jogging along with a very impressed little one! Dancing together can be lots of fun and on a rainy day all you need to do is to turn on some music and jump about together! Dancing together releases a chemical in the brain known to make you happy and can increase bonds. Dancing outside at the top of a hill like my daughter and I is optional! A great exercise is to lye flat on your back with your child next to you, arms at your side and extend your legs straight up. Try drawing

shapes or spelling out letters with your feet. Just make sure to keep your lower back pressed into the floor and move your legs slowly. I have started classes in the Perthshire area for pre-school children along with parents or adult carers called Higgle Jiggle. My aim is to get children having fun through dance, movement and skill development

exercises. However, I’ve also added some (optional!) sections where the adults can take part in higher intensity exercise to raise the heart rate and tone up or you can keep going at the toddlers rate if you need to. Get active this Autumn

f you are looking for a new outdoor activity to try, a great new path was opened at the end of July which links Lochore Meadows Country Park and the RSPB Centre at Loch Leven over Benarty Hill. Linking the Fife Core Path Network to the Loch Leven Heritage Trail, the new one and a half mile section provides footpath access to the treasures of Loch Leven National Nature Reserve to communities in West Fife. The project was a joint enterprise between the Living Lomonds Landscape Partnership, who help get people in communities around the Lomond Hills back out into the open spaces in their area and closer to nature. The LLLP and their partners at RSPB are confident that there will be something for everyone and there certainly seems to be. With a stunning landscape, abundant wildlife and the archaeological interest of the lime workings, you will be spoilt for choice. The short distance over Benarty Hill also provides a great starting point for getting out and exercising, improving your health and wellbeing and helping you to engage and

learn about your local environment. From the RSPB Scotland visitor centre the path climbs steeply through pretty woodland into the heather-clad hill tops for about a mile with spectacular views of Loch Leven and the Ochil and Lomond Hills before it leaves the official area of the RSPB reserve and leads into Lochore Meadows Country Park. At either end of the path, you’ll have a range of facilities and other attractions to explore. The RSPB centre has an interesting visitor centre, shop and café, as well as a 19th century courtyard ideal for an al fresco picnic lunch. You could also take a wander around the bumblebee meadow or the woodland trail. Just across the road from the centre it is possible to link up with the Loch Leven Heritage Trail, a 13 mile route which circles Loch Leven and is a haven for birdlife and cyclists and walkers alike! Fife has so much to offer, with hidden gems at every turn, make sure you get out there and explore it! 

Gardening Fun

ittle Blooms is an educational and fun approach to nature and gardening activities for 2-6 year olds. Classes are run by Avril Fulton, an experienced primary school teacher. Activities are planned around a different theme each week and include songs, rhymes, craft, story, sensory play and planting. (Children take home their craft and what they’ve planted.) These practical, creative and fun sessions help develop children’s understanding and connection to the natural world. We feel it’s really important for children to learn where their food comes from and how to grow some of it. Pre booking is essential for all classes with regular classes in Perth, Stanley, Glendoick, Broughty Ferry and I’m really excited to announce a BRAND NEW CLASS starting in Touch Community Centre, 30 Mercer Place, Dunfermline on Mon 22nd August - Mon 19th September 9.30-10.15. Why won’t my Baby Sleep?

By Nadia Edwards, Coorie Doon Baby hen our babies don’t sleep well, we tend to look for an explanation. We think it might be teething or gas. We worry that she’s too small and she needs to eat in the night, or he’s too big and he needs to eat more or he won’t feel full. The list goes on and on. Are any of these explanations the real truth? Sometimes. But barring those times when your child has a burning fever or a new tooth coming in, the real reason most babies won’t sleep or stay asleep is that they just haven’t learned how. We all have strategies that help us make the journey into sleep each night. We have bedtime routines that we tend to do without really thinking about it, and we do these things because they help us transition from the busyness of our day to a restful sleep. Most of us have a favourite position on the bed that we turn to when we feel sleep about to come. Some of us need a glass of water beside the bed, some need white noise or music, others can’t sleep without the window open…Whatever the differences might be, these are all sleep strategies, and without them we’d have trouble drifting off. The same goes for babies. Many parents who haven’t developed a sleeping strategy for their babies will complain that their child can only fall asleep with the bottle, or while

FAVOURITE DAY OUT:  Falkland Town has the beautiful Maspie Den walk plus Falkland Palace is stunning; however, none beat the food and friendliness at the Stag Inn for lunch. I’m sure we’ll level up to more kid-centric locations, but it’s a great close spot to relax. While this might be true, the trouble is, by offering these props continually after the new born stage, parents are creating a situation where their babies are dependent on something external to help them sleep. And that’s why they don’t sleep well. Night waking is very common in babies who have not learned to sleep properly and are relying on a prop. When they wake up and the prop isn’t there to put them back to sleep, they have to wake up fully and cry in order to be soothed back to sleep. Luckily there is hope. There are lots of ways to give your child the tools she needs to be able to sleep independently, even from a very young age. Babies are capable of sleeping through the night (ok not actually sleeping through the night, but happily falling back asleep once they wake at the end of a sleep cycle), and learning those skills young will help make bedtimes and night times relatively hassle-free. A well-rested child is a happier, healthier child. Fife Doors Open Days

After the novelty of a new school term has worn off show the children a bit of local history. Fife Council and hundreds of volunteers across Fife make Doors Open Days happen, for free. Step out and in to learn about the history of curling; what a living larder is; or see some of the very oldest books in Scotland. Take a walk up close, or find out where rescuing “old salts” and salt come together. You can go deep into Fife’s geological past and see 1000 yr old cave carvings, climb onto an old steam train, hop on an old bus, or a very modern fire engine. You can count the steps up tall towers, and hunt out the strangest gravestones in Fife, why pineapples?! Try pottery and do a painting of your day out! There’s a lot out there – and, if you pay attention, you might even win a prize

As you get into the autumn and winter school term, it can be difficult to cope with changing weather and dull days. Getting your child settled into a good routine is essential if you are going to ensure they get enough sleep and are able to get up

on time for school. ÊExercise Ê is your best friend Even if the weather’s dreadful, make sure your kids have exercise every day. It keeps them fit and helps with a good night’s sleep. The best time is just after school. ÊPlan Ê your mornings Mornings are bad times! Everyone is tired and cranky so having a routine can help. Get up 15 minutes before the
