t is with a heavy heart that I am passing the role of editor on. This will be my last issue of Families Fife and I have loved bringing together all the great events happening in Fife, Perth and Kinross. Your new editor, Deborah Marku, will be taking over for the Summer issue. This issue is filled with lots of great ideas for families to do with the warmer weather coming. From fruit picking at Cairnie Fruit Farm to having a glorious Afternoon Tea at Heaven Scent, you definitely won't be stuck for ideas. If your little one is starting nursery soon, we also have a great article on getting your child (and yourself ) ready for this big step. We also have a great feature on scouting and music, both great activities to get children involved in. Also, we meet Katie Ghilotti, founder of Toddler Sense in Dunfermline. Education Families Needed! Scientists and pollinators want your help…

CAR SEAT SAFETY CHECKS AT MUM2MUM MARKET

magine living in a desert with barely any food, hardly any water or any place to shelter. Unfortunately, this is exactly what it is like for the pollinating insects currently living in Britain. Loss of habitat, pesticides, and farming practices have left these insects hungry and homeless, suffering from a lack of feeding, nesting and shelter habitat. Which is why the Polli:Nation project needs your help. Now in its second year, the Polli:Nation survey is looking for families across the UK to take part in aiding research on the health and status of pollinating insects across the UK. The survey can be completed in under an hour in outdoor spaces such as gardens, school grounds, or local parks, and uploading your findings will contribute to important scientific research. The survey will also help you to consider whether your area is a good environment for bees and other pollinators. It offers guidance

on how you can create simple feeding and nesting habitats such as a pot of wildflowers, or nesting and shelter habitats like a bee hotel, as well as other cheap and easy ways you can improve your outdoor space for pollinators. So get out there now, become a citizen scientist and help the pollinators in your community. Free survey resources can be downloaded at www.opalexplorenature.org/ polli-nation and results can be submitted either online or by post. The Polli:Nation project has been developed by OPAL Imperial College London, Learning Through Landscapes,The Field Studies Council, Buglife, Butterfly Conservation, Bumblebee Conservation Trust and Centre for Ecology and Hydrology). 

Childline launches new app to offer counselling for kids

he NSPCC’s Childline service has just launched a new iPhone app to provide counselling for kids directly through their mobile phones. The ‘For Me’ app allows kids to access Childline’s online services, including 1-2-1 live chats with a counsellor, the ‘Ask Sam’ problem pages and entrance to their private ‘lockers’ – areas where they can write down their own personal thoughts and track their moods. It was invented by four teenagers who wanted to use technology to address the urgent need for support among young people. Childline founder Esther Rantzen said: “We know hundreds of thousands of young people use our website for help and support, with more than half those visits coming via mobile devices. Now young people can get immediate access to our counsellors through this brilliant, innovative app.”  The App is free to download via iTunes and is designed for discreet usage. Dalgety Bay & Hillend gala all set for 10th june 2017

lans are now well underway for this year’s Pirate and Princess themed Gala on Saturday 10th June at Dalgety Bay Sports Centre. As is tradition, the celebrations will kick off at 11am with a parade through the streets, which this year will start from Jubilee Park, followed by the Gala at 12pm in Dalgety Bay Sports Centre. The Parade will consist of more than 15 local groups including scouting and girl guiding groups, local dance groups, football teams and a ‘supporters of the Gala' section for any local businesses or residents wishing to walk in the parade. It will be led by the Royal Party which this year consists of a King and Queen, Prince and Princess, Duke and Duchess and Earl and Countess, who have

their very own Coronation Ceremony on Sunday 14th May at Dalgety Bay Sailing Club. The day is going to be a fun filled family day, with three different marquees, a range of displays and great entertainment for all. As the theme is pirates and princesses we are asking everyone to wear either a pirate hat or princess tiara to mark the occasion and the best one on the day will receive a prize. Kilgraston School will be launching a new bus route from Cupar in August 2017…

um2mum Market will be back at Levenmouth Academy on 7th May, for it’s 3rd event, and will be joined by the Safer Communities Team! The nearly new sales are growing rapidly after two successful sales so far! Hundreds of parents and grandparents have grabbed the opportunity to snap up bargains, with many queueing before opening time to get the best pick. Children’s clothes, toys, designer prams and nursery equipment were amongst the many bargains on offer. Mum2mum Market is proud to support local charities, and community initiatives, and will be joined this time by the Safer Communities Team from Fife Council, along with representatives from Scottish Fire & Rescue. They will be offering advice on car seat safety, as well as free car seat safety checks. This comes at a time when many parents may still be confused by the recent changes to car seat laws. Any parents who are looking to change car seats for their youngsters, or who just want some reassurance, can pop along for a some advice. Information will also be available about free Home Fire Safety Checks from the Fire Service. Mum2mum Market East Fife is proud to continue to support Home Start, Barnardo’s and Fife Sands. They provide a service at the end of each s ale for stallholders to donate any unsold items that they no longer want. Mum2mum Market staff then take the items directly to Barnardo’s, saving the stallholders time, and providing great donations to Barnardo’s. So far, donations have raised over £107.  Admission is £2 on the door (2 for 1 voucher on website), kids free, and free admission for the last half hour of the sale. Nursery news Lauriston Nursery Kinross

ince opening in August last year, our nursery has gone from strength to strength. You will regularly see us out with the children as we make the most of the community around us. We visit the local library, cycle track and woods. Our Pre-school children particularly enjoy forest kindergarten activities and the ability to climb and explore. Our Tweenies have been working hard on developing their garden space. They have built a shelter from the wood they collected, made a water play area,

planted seeds and made a tyre obstacle course. They have also introduced letters and numbers into the garden area. Babies and toddlers have been enjoying their time in the buggies. We have visited the local parks, looking at the fields of animals and discussing what we have seen. Getting your child ready for nursery or playgroup S

eparation can be a very difficult emotion for you and your child, bringing both positive and negative feelings of guilt, relief, lack of control and nerves. So, what steps can you take to ensure the transition from home to nursery is as smooth and stress-free as possible for all concerned? Get comfy Being comfortable with the nursery or playgroup staff and its surroundings, prior to starting, is key to a more successful settling-in process. There will be plenty of opportunities to visit the nursery or playgroup which will help both parents and children familiarise themselves with the staff who will eventually be looking after their child and allow any issues to be discussed. Prior to starting nursery or playgroup having opportunities to take your baby to local parent and toddler groups or baby classes can help build confidence, social and cognitive skills and provide a good opportunity for your child to get use to being with lots of other children. You may also make friends with fellow parents which all helps to make you feel more comfortable. Talk through what will happen Your child’s personality, their ability to handle change, and previous experience of being left alone with friends or family will affect how well your child handles separation. Start preparing for the big day in plenty of time by talking through what will happen at nursery or reading books designed to deal with first-day nerves. It is paramount that each child is treated as an individual and vital that each keyworker (that is the member of staff assigned to look after your child) only has a small number of children under their care so that individual requirements and needs can be met. Equally, it allows us to form a good relationship with the parents and encourage regular communication so any areas of concern can be addressed. Whether your child rushes in without a backward glance or throw themselves sobbing on the floor, be strong, be encouraging and, giving a clear message that you will be back soon, leave the room. Then go and do something for yourself!

It seems like only yesterday when you wouldn’t even go for a shower without taking your baby with you and, now, in the blink of an eye, the big day has dawned. Families Top Tips 1. Plan in a few short visits to the nursery/ playgroup staying with your child, then leave them for short periods, building up their trust that you’ll always return. Visits to the nursery prior to their first day will enable you both to establish a positive relationship and get to know the staff and your key worker. 2. Whilst many children will first experience nursery when they are babies or toddlers, if they are a bit older, talk to them about the

nursery/playgroup in a positive way, mentioning all the positive things they will get to do. There are some lovely books like ‘My First Day at Nursery’ by Becky Edwards and Anthony Flintoft and ‘Maisy Goes to Playschool’ by Lucy Cousins. 3. Communication is key to a good childcare experience for you and your child, so don’t be afraid to ask the nursery for feedback or discuss anything you want to. No question is ever a silly question as it is important that you feel comfortable with the care your child is receiving. 4. Talk to the nursery/playgroup if you are at a particular stage with your child be that weaning, toilet training etc. They will

always be happy to help and have years of experience. 5. If nursery or playgroup is the first time your child has experienced significant periods of separation from you, maybe help this by arranging times with relatives or friends where your child can gradually get used to time spent away from you and feel comfortable with other people. 6. Pass on as much information as you can to the nursery about your child’s personality, likes and dislikes. Information is helpful

to your child’s key worker and can help them settle your child in initially and then introduce your child to new experiences. 7. Try not to get too anxious about leaving your child or prolong the goodbyes. It can be difficult to leave while your child is crying but the nursery/playgroup will have plenty of strategies to distract your child and the staff will be happy for you to phone later on to check how your child is settling in. 8. Farming Fun for all the Family

entral and West Fife Agricultural Show, will be held on Saturday 3rd June with a strong focus on family fun and discovery. The show will allow the public to see a variety of animals including dairy and beef cattle, sheep, poultry, Clydesdale horses, ponies and show jumping. The main ring entertainment includes Clydesdale Horse Turnouts, Tug of War competition and the popular “Roll a bale of straw” competition – teams of 3 enter on the day for this fun event in the afternoon. For children there will be the Baby Animals tent where children will have an opportunity to see baby lambs, calves, goats and chicks. The Royal Highland Education Trust will also have various activities as well as giving children the chance to milk “Daisy the Cow”. There will be a story-teller, a sheep shearing demonstration, a Decorated Boiled Egg or Vegetable Animal competition and lots of Scarecrows too – look out for more details on the website and facebook in May. Re-setting your body clock is one thing, but you want to make sure you sleep well while you’re camping too. Keeping warm is key. • Make sure you are protected from the cold from the ground. Invest in a good quality thermal mat. • Go for bedding that works for you. If you don’t like sleeping bags, take your duvet. • Calories keep you warm. Eating something before you go to sleep can really help in warming you up and keeping you warm into the night. • Wear layers and keep your head warm. Some sleeping bags are designed to go over your head, but if you’re not keen on that then wear a fleecy hat and get the kids to do the same.

Head torches are a great idea. Kids love them and they mean you can be hands-free for toilet trips, getting dressed, eating and see such as terrier racing, highland dancing and vintage tractors and a variety of trade stands featuring everything from tractors to toys. There’s the Craft Marquee with a cookery show and Glasgow Science Centre’s Body Works On Tour team with great things for all the family to discover. The show is also holding a Dog Show, with classes ranging from pedigree puppies through to the waggiest tail. Entries are taken from 1.30pm on the day with judging starting at 2pm. It’s almost inevitable that the good old British weather will throw a few raindrops your way, but snuggling inside with a pitter patter overhead is all part of the experience, and it’s not miserable if you go prepared. • Take a trilby, peak cap and/or umbrella • An extra gazebo for eating in and playing games can be a god send in the rain and means that your sleeping tent won’t get trashed with muddy feet. • Card games like UNO, Whot! Or Dobble go down well, as does a good Roald Dahl. • Before you go, research where the local museums and cinemas are. • Go swimming. If you can’t beat it, join it – and the beauty is you can use the showers and changing facilities to get clean and dry.

Fife Coast and Countryside Trust Celebrating Volunteering Volunteers’ Week 1 – 7 June 2017

ife Coast and Countryside Trust are a local charity committed to ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to experience Fife’s great outdoors. We do this through careful management in a way that respects the balance between people and nature. We manage sites and paths throughout the Kingdom of Fife including the Fife Coastal Path, the Lomond Hills Regional Park, several Local Nature Reserves and many other sites enjoyed by communities and visitors alike. Volunteers play a vital role in the work of the Fife Coast and Countryside Trust. They contribute in so many different ways, from attending events, wildlife recording, managing information, beach cleans, litter picks, practical conservation projects, photographing sites and nature, tree planting and working directly with our team of Countryside Rangers. We would like to encourage more people to consider volunteering, which has many benefits including learning new skills or developing existing ones, socialising with likeminded people and working as part of a team. In recognising the contribution made by our volunteers, we will be taking part in Volunteers’ Week 2017: You Make a Difference 1-7 June. WHY YOU LIKE LIVING WHERE YOU DO?: Matt and I used to work and live in Edinburgh so moving through to Dunfermline was a big decision, but one I am so glad that we took. On our first visit we went for a walk around the town and saw a peacock strutting up someone’s front path bold as brass - we knew it was the place for us! Now we feel really at home here. It is a great place to raise chil-dren and I’m really excited that I will be adding another resource for families in my community when I start my Toddler Sense classes.

It is good for picking up gifts and cards, but whenever we go I usually end up leaving with a bottle of speciality gin and a bag of their dreamy lemon drizzle scones! Fife Pilgrim Way to Become a Reality!

Katie Ghilotti lives in Dunfermline with her husband Matt and three year old toddler, Finlay. Having spent the last decade working as a journalist in Edinburgh she is now bringing the award-winning Toddler Sense child development and adventure play programme to Fife by opening up her first Toddler Sense Centre in Dunfermline.

he Fife Coast and Countryside Trust are delighted to announce that we have secured funding of £399,000 from The National Lottery, enabling an exciting new long distance walking route the Fife Pilgrim Way to become a reality. Fife was known as Scotland’s Pilgrim Kingdom in medieval times, the Pilgrim Way which begins at either Culross Abbey or North Queensferry and is based on, and echoes the spirit of Fife’s ancient pilgrim journeys. The route passes landmarks such as the Inverkeithing Hospitium, Dunfermline Abbey, Markinch Church, and includes historic pilgrimage paths such as the Waterless Way at Ceres. It ends in front of the grand ruins of St Andrews Cathedral; a city whose original street layout was designed to cater for the constant influx of pilgrims from all across Europe. With a total distance of 70 miles, the

route will link together many examples of the region’s medieval and pilgrim heritage, using Fife’s existing network of rights of way, paths and tracks to offer varied opportunities for long distance, multi-day walking supplemented by shorter walks and circular routes. The project will seek to uncover and tell the story of pilgrimage through imaginative interpretation and activities. The total cost of the project is £758,551, approximately 84% funding is already secured. The project will commence once all of the remaining funding is in place, and is expected to be completed in around two years. FAVOURITE PARK: The Glen will forever be a favourite. It is one of the things that originally sold us on Dunfermline and we’ve spent many a day there feeding the squirrels, scrunching leaves and splash-ing in puddles. The play parks along the coast in Culross, Torryburn and Burntisland have been re-designed recently, and we've had fun exploring those too! FAVOURITE CHILDREN’S CLUB/CLASS: We are really lucky with the range of classes that are available for babies and toddlers in Dunfermline - I think we’ve tried most of them! When my son was a baby we loved the variety and wonder of our Baby Sensory classes, which is one of the reasons why I was so keen to bring the follow-on programme, Toddler Sense, to Fife. More recently I took my son to the first block of new Wild Planet Explorers classes and he loved it. It was a great way for us both to learn more about the animals we share our planet with and what

more we can do to protect them. A friend of mine is also starting up a new class for babies called Yoga Tots so that will be another one to watch out for! FAVOURITE DAY OUT: Craigtoun park is always a hit with my train-obsessed toddler as it has a minia-ture railway! The newly opened Fife Zoo soft play is also brilliant value and has a great cafe serving lots of child-friendly, healthy options like homemade baked beans and baked sweet potato. The cof-fee is also excellent, which is usually my main concern! FAVOURITE CHILD FRIENDLY RESTAURANT: We have always loved Ciao Italia in Dunfermline so I was really sad to read it was closing. A new favourite is Louis Browns in Dalgety Bay though. They do a great Sunday lunch and they have a couple of private rooms that you can rent for free, which are great for a family gathering as the kids can make all the noise that they want!

FUNNIEST COMMENT YOUR KIDS HAVE EVER MADE Fin: "Dad is good at fixing things." Me: "Yes, he is." Fin: "And you are good at breaking things.” He has my number! FAVOURITE FAMILY HOLIDAY SPOT: We’ve had some great holidays renting a log cabin up in Aviemore. There is so much to do there for kids but our highlight, of course, was a trip on a steam engine! MOST LOVED CHILDREN’S BOOK: Our current favourite is ‘The Book With No Pictures’ by B.J Novak of ‘The Office US’ television show fame. It is so silly and my son thinks it is hilarious!

FAVOURITE NIGHT OUT WITHOUT THE KIDS: My husband and I recently had a lovely meal out at the Wee Restaurant in North Queensferry. It is a charming wee place in a lovely setting, and the food was delicious.

BEST CHILDREN DVD OR TELE PROGRAMME: Sarah and Duck is the best thing on television, so we are really excited about going to see the live theatre show at the Adam Smith Theatre in Kirkcaldy in June!

MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT: Any time that your child has a tantrum in public is mortifying. But we’ve all been there!

MOST PLAYED WITH TOYS: Trains. Building blocks. Bubbles. Trains. Balls. Did I mention trains?!

NO PARENT SHOULD BE WITHOUT: Wet wipes and snacks. These two items will get you through most parenting emergencies. PARENT PET HATES: How hard we are on ourselves as parents. It is a tough job with very long hours. You are doing brilliantly. BEST PLANET SAVING TIP: Teach your kids to recycle. If they get into the habit now then it will stay with them for life. Clubs & Classes Interview with Gareth Huxtable, Scout Leader Scouting in 2017 The image of kids spending lots of time outdoors, getting heaps of fresh air and exercise while learning life skills as they go seems quaintly nostalgic now. There is, however, a great British institution that still promotes and encourages those values, while incorporating the realities of twenty-first-century living, like IT skills and PR. We spoke to Gareth, a former scout and Scout Leader, about Scouting and what it can offer to today's youngsters. First of all Gareth, how has Scouting changed in the twenty years you've been involved? The fact that a major celebrity and worldclass adventurer, Bear Grylls, is now the Chief Scout, speaks volumes. His many remarkable

achievements are an inspiration to the boys and girls, and he has definitely made scouting cool. We now go right the way through from age 6 to 25 and offer a huge range of activities. The uniform has been updated and is really practical, modern and comfortable for both sexes. Tell us more about the activities It's still based on the model of working towards Proficiency badges, which has been proven to be a great system for application and reward. There is something for everyone to work towards and achieve. We've got the old favourites like map reading and first aid, but also mechanics, abseiling, photography and entertaining. You name it, really. There is always a topic that will appeal. Going on from there we have the personal development awards, Chief Scout and Queen Scout that are similar to the Duke of Edinburgh awards and impressive for

and to fit in living and working alongside others. As they get older, the camps get more adventurous and we do overseas expeditions as well. This way we meet up with scouts from other countries, which is a brilliant chance to make new friends, have fun and see that they are a part of something bigger.

What's the best thing about scouting? That's a hard question! There are so many benefits. Most of all, it's good fun. It's also good to get kids outdoors, get them muddy, and, at the same time, they are learning behaviours and skills that are setting them up for life. It's win-win really. They make new friends, they have adventures, and they push themselves. I think the fact that we currently have over 450,000 member’s shows that the movement is more popular than ever and is providing a lot of opportunity for young people. Membership is growing, so that proves that the scouts are enjoying themselves and that's not bad for an organisation that's over a hundred years old,

but still meeting the needs of today's kids. A hundred years old? Yes, we've hit our centenary year and there's been a lot to celebrate. We formed Cub100 to commemorate 100 years of Cub scouting and have held events all over the country. We're actually the largest mixed youth organisation in the UK today. Not bad for a movement that was established in 1907. I think it shows we have really moved with the times and are providing a valuable outlet for our members. The transformation in the last fifteen years has been quite remarkable. That translates to thousands of kids all over the UK getting involved in masses of different activities every week. oga Tots classes are unique parent and baby yoga classes, providing some quality one to one time with your baby while strengthening and toning your body and relaxing your mind. As well as providing a gentle yoga workout for parents we adapt yoga moves for the babies to allow them to explore the movement and control of their bodies. We offer a variety of mini twists, mini stretches, upper and lower body moves and diagonal moves for babies leading to transitional practices such as head control, sitting, crawling, standing, early steps, first jumps and balances as they get older. For new mums we focus on postnatal yoga and “zipping” or “closing” the body after pregnancy and birth. For dad’s and other carers we focus on strengthening the core, learning how to use breath to instil calm and confidence to name but a few. 

Does it cost a lot to become a scout? I'd say it’s surprisingly cheap compared to a lot of other children's activities. We have an annual subscription charge, and that varies a bit depending on where in the country you are, but the average is somewhere between £50 and £100. That doesn't include things like camps, as obviously there are extra costs involved in transport, food and accommodation for trips away. The only other outlay is for the uniform, but there is no need to buy all brand-new kit. There is a thriving

second-hand market in scouting gear, and the Scouting Association itself can help out for families that struggle with the costs.

any parents encourage their children to play a musical instrument and the younger they begin, the more they can benefit. This guide aims to assist parents unsure of why their children should begin learning an instrument and what skills are required. Firstly, and most importantly, learning a musical instrument is hugely beneficial to your child's development. Whether they wish to be the next Chopin or Joe Satriani, the art of music can only be positive for your son or daughter as they navigate the choppy waters of adolescence. All you need to know before your child starts to play a musical instrument… When should your child begin lessons? Although some parents start their children at three, most teachers would agree that seven is ideal for several reasons; they must be able to hold the instrument, be able to grasp simple music notation and have the attention span required. What skills are important? Notes in music range from A to G. As long as your children know this, forwards and backwards, they can start to read and learn music! Obviously, an idea of co-ordination is useful. Your child will need to have an idea whether they want to play left-handed or right-handed. This will most often be the way that feels most natural to them, but as the adult it is important to know that left-handed equipment is often not as easy to find. What is needed? Purchasing the instrument is the easiest way to ensure your child is going to progress as quickly as possible, however, this is not the cheapest option! It may be worth talking

to local schools and clubs about hiring the equipment in the first instance, but if the student has the instrument at home, they will be far more likely to practise. You can buy music books including grade books, however, most music can now be found for free or at a small cost online. How often should they practise? One lesson a week is ideal, so as not to overburden the youngster. Practice really is up to the individual, but research would suggest if your child practices at least once more a week, they will improve far faster. How does learning music benefit a young person? ÊAcademic Ê studies Learning a musical instrument is proven to help your child in school-related activities. If they are learning about beat, rhythm and rhyme, in essence, they are also learning how to divide, create fractions and recognise patterns. The art of studying music and lyrics will also help to improve a child's short-term memory and, if continued, their long-term memory too. It is also widely believed that the scientific principles of strumming a guitar or playing a violin can aid the basic understanding of subjects such as physics. Cool, huh? ÊPhysicality Ê Learning instruments such as the drums, percussion or even the double bass can help youngsters develop physically too. Co-ordination and motor skills benefit most specifically, yet in addition, a lot of instruments are high energy, helping your child enjoy and feel the creative flow of the

activity, while letting off excess energy! Also, learning to cope with uncomfortable positions for short periods of time helps increase ambidexterity and timing. ÊPatience Ê Your child will also learn the key components of patience and delayed gratification. Learning to play with others at different levels is one of the key elements of contemporary music and helps increase acceptance levels in the young. In addition, some tricky instruments like the violin or piano, have a steep learning curve, so it teaches young people adult traits at an earlier age, giving them an advantage as they move through into adulthood. ÊSelf-esteem Ê Self-esteem will be boosted as your child is likely to meet new people, as well as master an art form that is tricky to say the least! Thinking about cost A music lesson can vary quite considerably in price, ranging from £15 up to £40. This will depend on the quality of the teacher or location. Make sure you shop around and get the teacher that you want. In essence, you need to know what it is you want your child to gain from the experience and make sure the teacher you choose is the sort of individual your child can learn from and grow a special bond with. So hopefully it is clear to see the benefits of learning to play a music instrument.
