Welcome Getting it Right in Fife The Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014 aims to improve the wellbeing of children and young people in Scotland. The Act introduces the offer of a Named Person for every child and young person.

What does the Named Person do? They are a central point of contact for advice, information and support so children and young people get the right help when they need it.

Who will be the Named Person? They will normally be the health visitor (preschool), or a headteacher or guidance teacher for school age children. The Named Person’s duties are integrated into their existing role and simply strengthens the support they already provide. Parent to Parent Hello! I’m Joanna McFarlane from Fife, owner of Wild Planet Explorers and mum to Maggie (2). Inspired by my daughter, I set up the two parts of Wild Planet Explorers. Firstly I deliver really fun and educational classes for 3-5 year olds about the lives of amazing animals using music, interactive props and imaginative play. The children are learning biology but using sombreros, bubbles and sticky slugs (among others) rather than microscopes! Secondly I want to make it easy for parents to find nature & wildlife events across Scotland by bringing all the information they need into one place through my online event search at the Wild Planet Explorers website. Why you like living where you do: Fife has many great places to explore as a parent. With great beaches, walks, cafes, soft play centres, lots of classes & baby and toddler groups to choose from and great Fife parenting networks online e.g YummyMummies Fife (also for buying & selling). It has been a wonderful place for Maggie to spend her first 2 years.

Travel & Outdoors Favourite park: Loch Ore Meadows Country Park has a lovely loch to walk around suitable for prams, a café (bring cash as no cards), a great play area, wildlife (swans, ducks, geese), watersport activities for older children, free car parking and toilets. Favourite children’s club/ class: Kilns Kiddies in the Queens Hall in Charlestown is great every Thursday morning for babies and toddlers (see Facebook page). Nature Tots at RSPB Loch Leven nr Kinross is great fun. My daughter is also a fan of Monkey Music in Edinburgh and Early Kicks Football in Dalgety Bay. Favourite day out: Almond Valley Heritage Park is a really great place and only half an hour from Fife where we are. As well as farm animals to see and handling sessions, there are free extra activities, great play equipment, outdoor trampolines, tractor push alongs, a huge indoor sand pit (including fossils to find), café, soft play and the museum. Children under 3 are free. I also highly recommend the Jupiter Wildlife Centre nr Grangemouth, what a hidden gem! Favourite child friendly restaurant: The Fire Station Creative café in Dunfermline, Biscuit Café in Culross and Aberdour Silver Sands Beach Cafe. Favourite night out without

the kids: Chatting about anything and everything over a lovely meal and a few drinks in our favourite pub where we met. Proudest eco-friendly moment: Switching over to Good Energy and moving away from the bigger energy companies. Best planet saving tip: Recycle & reuse as much as you can of everything you buy and own. No parent should be without: a change of clothes, sun cream, sun hat, warm hat, snacks, some change, a few small toys as back up and your diary. A woggle to put under the sheet along the side of the bed to stop little ones falling out. Parenting pet hates: Very long procrastination over cleaning teeth before bed when everyone including the little one is tired! Funniest comment your kids have ever made: Our daughter makes us laugh so much when she runs along on tiptoes like a ballerina snorting like a pig! “me Piggy Ballerina” she says. hen you’re planning a family holiday with a baby, an important thing to consider is how your travel plans are going to affect your child’s sleep routine. You’ll have a much more enjoyable time if you organise your trip in a way that allows for as little disruption as possible to your little one’s sleep schedule. Here are some tips to help make sure your baby gets the sleep he needs during your travels: ÊTip Ê 1: Don’t over-schedule. One of the biggest mistakes parents make is to try to pack in as much activities as possible – after all it’s your family holiday! The fact is, when you travel with a baby you can’t plan to go bungeejumping in the morning, swim with dolphins in the early afternoon, parasailing in the late afternoon, and a dinner cruise in the evening. It’s better to slow down the pace and make sure you schedule regular naps and early bedtimes, just like you would at home. ÊTip Ê 2: Be consistent with naps and bedtime. An occasional nap in the car seat/ buggy or a later-than-usual bedtime probably won’t do too much harm, but if your baby’s naps are all over the place and she goes to bed much later than usual several days in a row, your baby will become so overtired and cranky that a complete meltdown will be inevitable. ÊTip Ê 3: Be patient as your baby acclimatises to the new environment. In a strange place, your baby might cry for a while at bedtime or wake up at odd times during the night. The best way to handle this kind of behaviour is to react the same way you would at home. Go into the room every five minutes or so to offer a bit of reassurance, but other than that, don’t bend your rules. If you hang on tight to your consistency, within the first night or two, your child will be used to the new environment and will be sleeping well again. ÊTip Ê 4. Make sure you bring your child’s sleeping toy and/or blanket. If your child has a treasured comfort item, it will go a long way to helping him feel safe and secure enough to fall asleep in a strange environment. Forget it at your peril! ÊTip Ê 5. If you’re not a co-sleeping family, don’t start now. Even if it’s only for a few nights, if your baby decides this is her new preferred way to sleep, you could find yourself dealing with a big problem when you get home and put her back in her cot. 

But a day at the beach doesn’t just have to include those with facilities. There are countless other quiet and peaceful coves and bays throughout Fife just waiting to be explored. This summer break why not take a trip to one of Fife’s coastal beauties and try out some of these Top Tips for Fun on Fife’s Beaches. ÊTop Ê Tip #1 Fly a kite. Pick a good windy spot with lots of open space, West Sands in St. Andrews is a good bet and let your kite soar! ÊTop Ê Tip#2 Hunt for fossils. Crail is a particularly good area for turning up fossils in amongst the rocks and you can even spot tracks made by prehistoric centipedes if you look very closely. ÊTop Ê Tip#3 Build an epic sandcastle. You

don’t need to limit yourself to a simple upturned bucketful of sand, you can use all sorts of stuff from the shoreline to decorate your creation from drift wood and shells to sea glass and feathers. Get creative! ÊTop Ê Tip #4 Try out some watersports. Elie, St Andrews and North Queensferry have opportunities for watersports and boating and lots of other companies can provide guided trips, tours and rentals. ÊTop Ê Tip #5 Go for a Rock Pool Guddle. The old bathing pool at Pittenweem has to rate among the best places for sealife. You’ll be amazed at what you can find; crabs, prawns, starfish and sea anemones are just a few of the creatures who make their homes in these pools. Please remember to treat sea creatures with care and return everything exactly as you found it. Add picnics, sunbathing (fingers crossed!) and paddling and you have a fun packed day out! Many of the beaches around Fife have lots of other facilities too including playparks, cafes and outdoor sports. The Fife Coastal Path is never far away either if you fancy a stroll. 

As part of the 2016 programme theme of ‘Pollinators’, the garden has opened a new Tropical Butterfly Experience, helped by a £10,000 donation from St Andrews Community Council. This will allow visitors to the Garden to get up close to the butterflies in a lush tropical setting, learn the story of plants and pollinators and find out why maintaining habitats is so important, both to wildlife and humans. James Hearsum, director, said: “The Botanic Garden is excited to be bringing a fantastic interactive experience to St Andrews in 2016. Museum of the University of St Andrews (MUSA)

St Andrews is home to Scotland’s oldest University, founded between 1410 and 1414 so if you want to find out more about the University and its treasures, then MUSA is a good place to begin! Little Blooms is a unique blend of education, gardening and nature inspired activities for 2-6 year olds. Classes are run by Avril Fulton, a qualified professional. Themed activities include songs, rhymes, craft, story, sensory play and planting. (Children take home their craft and what they’ve planted.) These practical, creative and fun sessions help develop children’s understanding and connection to the natural world. We feel it’s really important for children to learn where their food comes from and how to grow some of it. Holiday classes will be held during week beginning 8th August including the popular Miniature Garden workshops for 4-10 year olds with a choice of Fairy Garden or Dinosaur Garden. Summer Events Discover the magic of Cambo!

This summer there are lots of adventures to be had at Cambo. Explore our woodland trail to spot our mythical Glingbobs and Tootflits or journey down to the seashore for a picnic and some rook pooling. We will be hosting some free family drop in sessions in the woods with den building, campfire cooking and singalongs too! Kids can join our monthly adventure club (as long as they enjoy getting muddy) or sign up to woodland holiday clubs full of bug spotting, woodland crafts and fire making. We are very excited about our next Wild Food Festival day with foraging and tasting local and wild produce including berries, ice cream and even seaweed. For those who like being out after dark our twilight bat walk will explore the sounds and movements of bats living around Cambo. In the woodland, seashore or gardens come and discover the magic of Cambo!

And there will be plenty on offer to get those brain cells stimulated… A leading showcase for children’s writers and illustrators, the Book Festival will once again create a magical, familyfriendly village of tents and walkways, theatres, cafés and bookshops in the heart of Edinburgh City Centre, where everyone from tiny tots to older teens can enjoy the wonderful Festival atmosphere with an ice cream or a slice of cake. This year’s Book Festival will feature a huge array of fun and inventive activities, including workshops, storytelling, book signings, and lively discussions bringing

After a sell-out exhibition at Rothes Halls last year, The Singing Kettle magic returns this summer to Kirkcaldy Galleries.
