Batter matters… F amilies Fife loves nothing more than to hear about creative locals running their own businesses from home. Katherine Pearson is local mum from Kirkcaldy, who runs a successful cake making and decorating business from home. With the popularity of baking at an all time high, due in great part to the addictive qualities of the Great British Bake Off, we set out to find out a bit more about mixing baking with business.

What’s your background? I have been making cakes for a number of years and my background is in hospitality. I completed my training at Adam Smith College and have worked in restaurants such as Rufflets Country House Hotel, The Peat Inn and The Three Chimneys. I also have a qualification in Creative Cake Decorating and have over 6 years professional experience in cake decorating. How did you get started making cakes? I have always made cakes for as long as I can remember. I started from a young age baking with my mum and granny. My passion for baking and creating then led me to catering college and to become a pastry chef. While I was working I was approached to make a birthday cake for one of my head chefs. I’m glad to say

it was a great success and my cake decorating took off from there. After this I went to Squires Kitchen and completed a week long sugarcraft course down in Farnham. It was such a good experience, one I’d love to repeat. What is your favourite type of commission? I love making children’s cakes, as they can be any design and shape. From football cakes to fairy castles to a new ‘Minion’ shaped cake. Children have such good imaginations and can be very specific to what they want! Did you enjoy The Great British Bake off and would you like to take part? I love The Great British Bake Off, I always watch it and I would love to take part in it. It would be an amazing experience and hard work - but I like a challenge. How much notice do you need for orders? I usually take around 2 weeks notice for cakes, but can be flexible as I work from home. I can deliver or people can pick up their cakes from me.

Handy strategies for Parent-Teacher interviews

arents evening can be a hassle; fitting it in, dealing with childcare, and then even remembering that thing you wanted to mention can be hard. Here are some quick tips to help you get the most out of parents evening. Ask your CHILD if there is anything they are concerned about or want to say to the teacher. Make and take notes to jog your memory.

Talk about the child rather than the school. If you don’t like a certain policy e.g. homework you really need to take that up with the Headteacher. Don’t store up big issues till then. Parents evenings are only part of home school communication so don’t be surprised if 10 minutes is not enough. Is most cases teachers are happy to talk more at a convenient time.

News: Who, What, Where, When … Don’t miss… Miss Pauleys

um and entrepreneur, Emma Pauley, is the creative force behind an exciting new venture in Dunfermline. Situated in the heart of the town, just up from the Glen Gates, Miss Pauley’s in part shop, part workshop space and part gallery. The place is brimming with work from local artists, designers and makers, all of which would make wonderful gifts. There are two levels to the shop, on ground level, there is the retail shop selling a range of unique, contemporary and traditional work from both established and new designers and downstairs is the Art Gallery and workshop rooms. Emma has already started to host a regular after school craft workshop making all manner of bespoke items to encourage young designers of the future. Emma herself comes well qualified to start such a venture as Miss Pauleys. She was part of a duo team called Back on the

High Street, who won Test Town 2013, an innovative business competition aimed at young entrepreneurs and their vision of how to revitalise vacant town centres. Emma strongly believes that our town centres need some tlc and Miss Pauley’s is Emma’s first attempt to bring some soul into the heart of Dunfermline. We at Families magazine wish her all the best. ostelling offers families a great way to explore Scotland without blowing the budget, whether you’re looking for a low-cost city break or a traditional beach holiday. But you don’t need to compromise on location; SYHA Youth Hostels are situated in some of the most spectacular parts of Scotland, and they are relaxed, welcoming and a lot of fun. The Scottish Youth Hostels Association (also known as SYHA Hostelling Scotland) is a not-for-profit, self-funding charity founded in 1931 to encourage everyone – especially young people – to experience and appreciate the Scottish countryside, environment, natural heritage and places of historic and cultural interest, by providing low cost accommodation for them on their travels. All profits are re-invested into the network to maintain properties for future generations. However, although our mission remains the same, a lot of other things have changed! We currently have approximately 20,000 members, with membership free for under 16s and students in full-time education. As well as member discounts and special offers, an annual magazine and e-newsletters, this also gives you access to Hostelling International, providing access to over 4000 Youth Hostels in 80 countries around the world. Family New Year’s resolutions T

he secret behind keeping your New Year’s resolutions is not to aim too high – so this year, make one or more small changes that will bring your family together and give you all a stronger, more positive outlook. Here are a few of our favourites:

Eat together

There are so many proven benefits of eating a regular family meal together, from better manners to happier kids. Turn off the TV and mobile phones and concentrate on talking, laughing and sharing – especially for Sunday lunch.

Make one night of the week Family Games Night The humble board game has many benefits - it brings the family together, it teaches sharing, counting and turn-taking, and most of all it’s fun! Wean the children (and adults!) off their screens and get them around a table, and you should soon see an improvement in everyone’s mood.

Stop shouting!

No-one likes to be shouted at, and no-one likes to live in an angry atmosphere, so make the change yourself. Resolve to keep

your cool and talk out any problems. Anger only breeds resentment, which can lead to long-term family rifts - talking, in contrast, leads to better understanding and closer families.

Focus on the positive

Resolve to look on the bright side in 2014 – it’s better for you and sets a great example. Seeing the silver lining to every cloud helps people cope and doesn’t need to be unrealistic.

Get out in nature

It’s been proven that playing outdoors has profound benefits for children, but most of them don’t have the freedom that was taken for granted just a generation ago so get outdoors as much as you can – your seratonin levels will rocket.

Take on a charity challenge

Give any fitness goals a boost by getting the family involved in a team challenge for charity. Not sure what to do or who to support? Help with choosing after-school activities By Elisabeth Dolton

s we look forward to not only a new term but also a new year, a good opportunity presents itself to look at afterschool activities for our children. We are lucky in our neck of the woods as there is plenty to choose from but this sheer wealth of options can, in fact, leave us quite confused. How can we know which ones are the best for our child, offer value for money, and critically, which ones they will enjoy! After-school activities definitely offer value to your children. Reports indicate those who participate in after-school programs have better school attendance, higher grades and loftier aspirations. They’re less likely to get into trouble and are at lower risk of obesity. It is also a great opportunity for children to develop social and leadership skills. The first place to start is of course with your child and find out how they feel about the activity, and perhaps let them choose at least one club or activity themselves. Help them choose activities that reflect who they are and what they want to learn, don’t impose your preferences. Explain that it’s important and fun to try new things, and remember switching activities is normal amongst children. Quality control Discipline-based activities that create a quality product over a period of time are great, e.g. putting on a play. Don’t think that high cost equal high quality, some activities are cheaper to run like football. Staff members should be professionals with skills and experience.

Consider the mix of activities. The benefits of exercise are huge, so including a sport would be a good start. Extra curricular activities are ideal for children to explore and practice what it means to be a group leader, e.g. Brownies. If you are stuck between two similar activities, consider the usefulness, e.g. drum lessons might be cool, but the guitar might have wider applicability. You may want to limit your child to one or two activities per week. This is especially important if you have more than one child as it’s a lot of running around if you have say 4 or even 6 different places to be often at competing times. Families Fife has compiled a selection of local clubs and activities to help you choose. Logistics Finally, remember logistics. The afterschool programme affects you too. Avoid signing on to too many activities that leave you scrambling from one to the next. No one will have fun doing anything if it means arriving late, leaving early, and going without dinner on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Look hard for places you can walk to, it reduces your carbon footprint while keeping you fit for free! Finally do build in some downtime. Children need to have independent play as well as the structured activities, so ensure time is built in for dinner, watching T.V. and relaxing. In conclusion, after-school activities can provide enrichment, adventure and variety. They can enhance knowledge and build character. Spend a bit more time choosing the right activity programme for your child and you will reap the benefits.

The Helen O’Grady Drama Academy was established over 30 years ago in Western Australia. Classes were started in village halls and community centres to offer children of all ages a unique programme of drama designed to encourage their confidence, communication skills and self esteem. If you set yourself the task to be a 'size 8' and start training for a marathon and find a few days later your knee is in agony, you need to change direction. As well as mischievous meerkats, p.p.p.penguins, loveable seals and a display on Amazonian fish and reptiles, they have also just welcomed two young American alligators to the aquarium! They are the only pair in Scotland and only the second pair in the whole of the UK! Native to fresh water rivers and lakes, these two American alligators have long snouts with upward facing nostrils at the end, which lets them breathe whilst the rest of the body remains underwater. Make your visit to the Aquarium snappy! What’s more - coming soon to St Andrews Aquarium is Sonny the Californian sea lion! Sonny will be moving in next to four resident seals and will be here from the end of December 2013. The Aquarium is also eagerly awaiting the arrival of four male Humboldt Penguins who are expected to be introduced into the penguin enclosure in January 2014! St Andrews Aquarium is open from 10am daily and also offers penguin, rock pool, seal and meerkat talks throughout the day from 11.30am! You can even treat yourself and children by taking part in animal feeding experiences with our penguins, seals or meerkats. There is lots to learn, see and do at St Andrews Aquarium so get along and join in the fun!

Snowdrops by starlight

rom 12 to 16 February there is also the now popular opportunity to enjoy Snowdrops by Starlight each evening when lighting and head torches will create a magical walk through the snowdrop woods, featuring kinetic sculpture (powered by sustainable energy) and showcasing the winner of a competition among three local secondary schools and sponsored by Babcock Engineering. This creates a completely different and exciting dimension to the woodlands and snowdrops and is always much enjoyed by adults and children alike. Bill Gibson of Fife Cultural Trust will be bringing along his bothy installation complete with musicians to play live music and there will no doubt be one or two other surprises! As usual the tea room will remain open each evening serving warming refreshments and the Snowdrop Gift Shop will also be open. Another added attraction in 2014 will be a promenade theatre performance of ‘A Midwinter Night’s Dream’ on the evenings of Tuesday 11 and Monday 17 February performed by The Highland Shakespeare Company.
