Get hands on at the Festival of Archaeology The Festival of Archaeology is a fortnight long festival which runs from 13 to 28 July 2019 and will provide opportunities for families to discover archaeology in their local area. Drive for more men in childcare More men are to be encouraged into careers in nurseries and early years’ settings, in a new project to provide more diverse role models for children before they start school. With men making up just 3% of early years staff in England, the project aims to break down the barriers that prevent men entering careers in children’s early education, including the myth that men are less suited to caring roles. The project will be run by the Fatherhood Institute, and will spearhead an innovative recruitment drive that highlights the positive roles men can play in the crucial first years of a child’s education. It will provide practical resources like myth busters, ‘how-to’ guides and online content to support male recruitment into the profession, as well as online peer support for men already working in the sector. Clubs and classes: planning ahead pays By Andrew Campbell The summer holidays may seem long but they will soon be over. So it’s not too early to start thinking about what after school classes and clubs and weekend activities you may want to book for your child in September. This is particularly important if you have a child who wants to undertake a number of activities or classes or if you have multiple children. It’s essential to work out a schedule whereby all the activities fit together neatly and you are not left rushing from place to place with too little time to spare Planning ahead gives you time to research all the options thoroughly, talk to providers and book into free trials and taster classes that are scheduled early in September, before the term gets into full swing. Testing out your child’s interest in a new activity by taking advantage of free trials and taster classes is definitely recommended if you want to avoid a situation where you pay for an activity in which your child swiftly loses interest. Without prior planning, it’s easy to find yourself scrabbling around in a hurry at exactly the time when you are also preparing for your child to go back to school. There’s the chance you’ll miss out on something suitable too, as popular classes fill up quickly. It’s also easier to get a session time that suits your family’s schedule if you are ready to book early, as well as being able to avoid travelling further to get exactly what you want. If you want to book your child into an activity with friends, there’s likely to be some co-ordination involved with their parents, so pre-planning is beneficial. Last but not least, you may find you can save money by taking advantage of ‘early bird’ booking discounts offered by many activity providers.

Summer Days Out
Put the kids in charge! There has been a lot in the press in recent months about ‘helicopter parenting’ and the fact that many parents are doing too much for their children. So how about breaking the cycle and putting the kids in charge for the day? Claire Winter makes some suggestions. Sometimes when we are busy we can over schedule our child’s school holidays with clubs, activities, play dates and days out. So why not counteract this by taking a step back and putting the kids in charge? Children love independence so let each child in your family set the agenda for one day. Give them a budget and encourage them to start planning. Parent coach Susi Ramroop (www. susieramroop.com) says it’s important to give our kids more independence. “In an attempt to please our kids and keep them busy, we fill their schedules with activities, and run the risk of overwhelming them. Teaching them from a young age to choose a day out based on what brings the most joy exercises their decisionmaking muscles, and sets them up for a better future – making choices is the foundation for managing time and money effectively.”
Follow these easy steps: Put one of your children in charge Set the agenda. Let your child know that he or she has to plan an activity that is out of the house for the day, as well as how to get there and back and where and what the family is going to eat for each meal.
Set a budget Give your child a set cash allocation for the day. They then need to decide what to spend the budget on. The budget needs
to cover the day out or activity as well as food. They might decide to buy food for a picnic, treats or eat out. Assist them to actually buy any food required.
Researching Get them to research the activity or day out they want as a starting point. Give them some tips on researching travel costs. You can assist them with this if they ask for help but try not to take over. Advise them to pre-buy the tickets or train fares online. Depending on their age they may be able to enter credit or debit card information and manage booking systems. If not, give them some help with this. If they can stretch the budget or find free things to do, they get extra brownie points!
Let them navigate Get them to look up the location on Googlemaps or Sat Nav if you are driving or on a map if you are walking or using public transport. They can ask you for help if necessary. Ask them to direct you to your destination. If they make mistakes, it’s all part of the learning.
It may be mayhem! Remember things may not all go to plan but you can have fun, relax and enjoy not being in charge. Sometimes kids need to learn from experience that sweets for every meal is not a good idea!
Keep it up If the experiment went well, why not introduce it as a regular feature in family life? You could have a fun day out ideas jar that everyone contributes to. The whole family can throw their ideas into a hat or jar and you pull one out every weekend. My kids love having a Mexican, Indian or Pizza night. They plan the menu and ingredients required, then we do the shopping and cooking together. When the food is ready, we watch a film. An activity doesn’t have to be expensive or complicate. We often forget that what children actually really want is to be spending time with us, not expensive days our or material things.
Helping our children develop independence is vital. We need to give them the tools to become responsible, emotionally-intelligent adults who are capable of making their own decisions. It’s not always easy to let go but when you do it’s great to see their smiles of satisfaction when they are allowed to do things their way! Summer Reading Challenge Space Chase The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to read six library books during the long summer holiday. Children’s reading can decline during the summer holidays if they don’t have regular access to books or encouragement to read for pleasure. This year the challenge will focus on the theme ‘Space Chase’ - an out-of-this-world adventure inspired by the 50th anniversary

of the first moon landing. Children are challenged to read at least six library books over the school holidays and collect rewards, such as stickers, on their way to receiving their challenge certificate and medal.

Keeping your family safe and healthy this summer As the weather gets warmer, you and your family are likely to be spending more time outside. Outdoor activities can be a lot of fun but it’s important that you’re prepared and take certain precautions to keep your family safe. Here are my tips for staying safe this summer. Be careful around open waters Water starts to appear more and more inviting as the weather gets warmer. Whether you take your family kayaking on a lake, for a dip in the sea or simply for a riverside walk, the dangers of open water should not be overlooked. In 2017 there were 255 deaths from accidental drowning, and almost half of these were from people falling in the water unintentionally. The best way to prevent this is to never leave your children unsupervised when in and around water, teach them about the dangers of water and start taking them to swimming lessons from a young age. Always ensure they wear buoyancy aids if necessary.
Watch out for open windows Every year there children die or are seriously injured from falling out of open windows. If you open a window to keep the house cool, remember to consider if there’s any chance at all your child might be able climb up to the windowsill and fall out. Children can be surprisingly ingenious when it comes to exploring and you may not consider that they’d be able to effectively re-arrange the furniture until it’s too late. If in doubt, install a window guard but be aware that this isn’t a substitute for close supervision as children have been known to climb over these as well.

Watch out for any signs of allergy such as a rash, facial swelling or difficulty breathing, especially in children who may not have been stung before. Set up a safe barbeque area It won’t be long before the aromas of flame grilled food begin to fill the air in neighbourhoods up and down the country. Barbecues are a great way to enjoy the brighter evenings but pose a risk to young children who decide they wish to play with the new contraption in the corner of the garden. Explain to your children the dangers of going close to the barbecue and that the person doing the cooking needs to have plenty of space to cook safely. Take extra care to keep children away from the barbecue - you could even arrange for another adult to keep them distracted with some garden games.
Prepare for British weather Going on a long family walk can be a great way to enjoy the warm weather but ensuring you’re well-prepared can make the difference between having fond memories and an afternoon you’d prefer to forget. Plan your route, take a map rather than relying on a phone, and take your phone too in case you need to call someone in an emergency. Pack plenty of water, sunscreen, snacks and make sure everyone has appropriate clothing and footwear. Consider taking waterproofs, a towel and even a survival blanket. We all know how changeable the British weather can be and children are especially susceptible to hypothermia should they be caught in an unexpected downpour or accidentally slip into water.

Courgette, lemon and poppy seed cake Courgettes and ground almonds give this light, zingy gluten-free cake a wonderfully moist texture. With a dusting of poppy seeds inside and on top, this make an exquisite summer teatime treat. The moisture from the courgettes means it keeps well in an airtight container for several days.
Ingredients 75ml whole milk 2 tbsp poppy seeds Zest of 2 lemons, finely grated 250g unsalted butter, plus a little extra for greasing the tin 250g light brown soft sugar 4 eggs, yolks & whites separated ½ tsp almond extract 200g gluten-free self-raising flour 75g ground almonds 250g grated weight of courgettes for the topping: 300g icing sugar 1½ tsp lemon zest, finely grated 30g unsalted butter 2 tbsp lemon juice 1 tbsp poppy seeds
Method Preheat your oven to 180˚C/Gas 4. Lightly grease a 23cm springform cake tin with a little butter and line with baking parchment.

Help for choosing a family dog If you are considering adding a dog to your family, this is an important decision which is best not made on a whim. Generally, children and dogs form great bonds and friendships and dogs can offer the opportunity for children to learn great life skills such as responsibility and compassion. But all dogs are individuals. The breed of the dog is perhaps the single most important factor you can take into account, when deciding what dog is right for your family. Warm the milk, poppy seeds and lemon zest in a small pan for a couple of minutes, then remove from the heat and leave to cool. Cream the butter and sugar in a large bowl until pale, light and fluffy (an electric hand mixer makes life easier). Beat in the egg yolks, one at a time.
Talk, sing and play to build brains
Stir in the almond extract, flour and ground almonds. Fold in the courgettes and cooled milk.
Almost two thirds of parents are unaware that back and forth interaction with their child from birth can help their babies’ social, emotional and cognitive development.
Whisk the egg whites in a separate clean bowl until they form stiff peaks. Add a large spoon of the egg white to the courgette mixture and stir it in (a sacrificial bit!), then very gently fold in the rest, keeping as much air in the mixture as possible. Pour the mixture into the tin. Bake for about 60 minutes, depending on your oven, until firm to the touch; it should spring back when you lightly press the middle. Cool the cake in the tin for 15 minutes, then turn onto a wire rack to cool completely. To make the topping, sift the icing sugar into a bowl. Stir in the lemon zest. Melt the butter and working quickly, pour it over the icing sugar. Add the lemon juice and quickly stir it together, adding a splash of cold water if needed, until you have a thick but spreadable icing. Use a pallet knife to spread over the cake. Sprinkle over the poppy seeds and leave the cake for about 30 minutes (if you can!), so the icing can set a little before serving.

A survey of more than 2,000 parents and expectant parents by the NSPCC found that 62% were unaware that moments playing, singing or telling stories can be brain-building ones. NSPCC research has found some parents struggle with ideas about how to interact with their young child beyond eye contact and cuddling, especially in the early months when they do not receive obvious feedback from their babies. In response, the charity is launching a campaign, ‘Look, Say, Sing, Play,’ to encourage new parents to use everyday scenarios to have more two-way interactions with their babies. Going to the shops, having a bath, going to bed – whatever you and your baby are doing can be turned into a back-and-forth. The summer holidays are starting and Families magazine asked the Woodland Trust for its top pick of holiday adventures to get children active outdoors and away from their screens! Create a fairy garden Use your imagination to design a fantastic fairy garden! You can do this indoors if it’s raining. You will need: •
A container, such as a plastic box or old washing up bowl

Earth
•
A collection of natural materials: small stones or pebbles, sticks, moss, leaves, and perhaps some small flowering plants.
Fill your container with earth (if you’re using living plants, put some stones in the bottom for drainage). Use some leafy twigs to make trees. Build a fence or little seat with sticks. You could even make a pond by sinking a plastic cup or another small container into the earth and filling it with water. You’re bound to think of lots more ideas once you get started.
Embark upon a Woodland challenge Set up challenges to complete on a day out in the woods and have a competition with your family and friends. Remember to decide how many points each challenge is worth. Here are some challenge ideas:

Host a teddy bears’ picnic This is sure to be a hit with younger children, especially if they can invite some friends from nursery. Use a teddy cookie cutter to make some little bear-shaped sandwiches. Cut out some pictures of bears and hide them in the surrounding area for kids to find (just 10 Families East Kent

If it’s too wet to go outside, why not cheer yourself up with a gorgeous butterfly mobile instead?
Get down low and throw it across the water with a spinning action. Do persevere as it might take a bit of practice.
Try a barefoot walk Let the grass tickle your toes, splash through a stream, and stomp in some squidgy mud. Did you know you have over 7,000 nerve endings in each foot, so walking barefoot is a great way to get in touch with nature? Just make sure you avoid anything sharp on the ground. Some parks and attractions have special barefoot trails, so search online for one near you. You could even try setting up a barefoot walk in your back garden.

Cross the sticks over in the middle and fasten them with string or wire to make the frame. Fold a piece of paper in two and draw half a butterfly along the folded edge. Cut around it and open it out. Repeat for lots more butterflies. Decorate them if you wish. Attach a thread to each butterfly using the needle and tie the other end to a stick. A Carnival of History not to be missed at Leeds Castle This summer, Leeds Castle will welcome communities for a spectacular two day Carnival of History on the 27 and 28 July. Visitors will be treated to a whole weekend of family friendly activities including authentic re-enactment shows, pop-up music performances, large-scale costumes and a dazzling riot of colour and celebration. Historical arena shows will re-create significant moments from the last nine centuries of Leeds Castle’s history while carnival performers and costumed characters will roam the grounds interacting with visitors. Living History encampments promise to conjure up the sights, sounds and smells of the past. With a busting timetable of activities across both days, there is something for everyone at the Leeds Castle Carnival of History. This event is included in the price of admission.
