welcome to families Happy birthday to us! It’s hard to believe but Families Vale of York is celebrating ten years of publishing this month! In 2004 I was mum to a toddler, teaching in high school and embarking on a venture that would change my life. Ten years on I’m mum to an (almost) teenager who is already taller than me, and a 7 year old daughter who thinks she’s already a teen. Starting a business takes a huge leap of faith and I’ve been lucky to have a supportive and understanding family who’ve taken their fair share of the strain – and hopefully the joy too! Over the last ten years I’ve been privileged to work with some of the leading businesses in North Yorkshire and have met some truly inspirational people along the way. This magazine couldn’t work without the support of all our advertisers, people who have contributed with editorial, regular columns and advice and particularly our wonderful designer Ellie at Mooi design. The Mount School launches its pre-school art competition The Mount School, York is holding its annual art competition on December 5th and is hoping to see even more entries from pre-schools and nurseries this year.

The competition is open to pre-schoolers and entries fall into one of three age categories: 2-3 years, 3-4 years and 4-5 years. Winners in each age group will win a prize of art supplies for their pre-school, nursery or childcarer. There will also be a ‘Pupil’s Choice’ award, where students from The Mount Junior School are invited to vote for their favourite artwork – which will also win a prize. Now in its third year, the art exhibition gives York preschool children the chance to explore artistic themes and give meaning to the marks they make. This year’s theme is ‘Colours!’ and children are invited to interpret the theme as widely as they wish, perhaps taking inspiration from stories explored in their pre-school setting or from autumn changes around them, or simply being inspired by colour. The competition is open to digital media but not photography or video. This means that children can submit work they have created on their iPads and tablets. Author Drops In To Belmont Grosvenor

There were stories of silly sausages, grumpy wolves and greedy pigs when author Liz Million dropped into Harrogate independent prep school Belmont Grosvenor. The North-East based author and illustrator spent the day with pupils, inspiring them to enjoy reading and drawing as much as she does. Working with all year groups Liz not only read extracts from her books, but taught the children how to draw some of her colourful characters.

Author Liz, whose books include Be Quiet Belinda and One Fat Cat, said: “I love coming in and visiting schools and encouraging children to read and to draw. “I want children to be passionate about books, and maybe inspire a few of them to think about alternative career paths. It’s a great job being an author and illustrator, a job one that’s really creative and fun,” she said. Sophie Johnson, Head of English at Belmont Grosvenor School said all pupils at the school had thoroughly enjoyed the day. “Liz was truly inspiring to all of the children. Even our very youngest were in awe of her talents and she really enthused all of them with her vibrant, lively approach. “It is always a great sign when children want to carry on long after their workshop has finished,” she added. Positive Birth Movement grows Now for some good news: the positive birth movement is gaining huge popularity! Set up less than 2 years ago by mum and writer Milli Hill, The Positive Birth Movement has rapidly grown and now boasts over 150 groups in the UK alone, with hundreds more worldwide. Positive Birth Groups are completely free to attend and are a place for all pregnant women - regardless of their background, experience or choices - to come together and share experiences, thoughts, feelings and insight about childbirth. Many are run by birth professionals such as doulas or midwives, while others are organised by women who are simply passionate about birth as a positive experience. Positive Birth Groups aim to be a helpful part of pregnancy, a warm and welcoming place to hear stories and ideas. Consider what you really want from your childbirth experience, learn about your rights and choices, and challenge any fears or negative expectations you might have. The Positive Birth Movement believes that every woman deserves a positive birth, in which she feels she has freedom of choice, access to accurate information, and is in control. It doesn’t have to be natural or drug free – it simply has to be informed from a place of positivity as opposed to fear, and to have genuine choice. Stamp out bullying National AntiBullying Week takes place 17-21 November, with this year’s theme of Let’s Stop Bullying Together. The AntiBullying Week website is packed with resources for schools, parents and children, plus online workshops and short films on how to survive bullying. Why not take part in their Anti-Bullying Competition, too? ‘Let’s Stop Bullying Together’ is an exciting opportunity for children to get involved in AntiBullying Week by designing a gadget, drawing a picture, writing a story, song or poem, taking a photo, or shooting a film or documentary. Entries can be fun, entertaining, serious, creative, colourful or futuristic, so get stuck in now for the chance to win a prize of up to £300. To accompany National Anti-Bullying Week, Actionwork is running Anti-Bullying Month throughout November, with a theme of Creatively Dealing with Bullying. The Anti-Bullying Roadshow tours the UK with a packed spectacle showcasing a variety of strategies in dealing with bullying, and highlighting ways to empowerment. Music and science, strategies and up-to-date research on bullying are all used in the workshops, plus they run Anti-Bullying Puppet Shows for younger children and creative cyberbullying workshops for older kids. Bullying can happen to anyone at any age and at any time. National Anti-Bullying Week recommends ChildLine as an excellent resource on how to spot bullying, possible reasons of why bullying occurs and suggestions on how to stop it. All children to start learning a language at Primary school As of this term, teaching a language will become mandatory from Key Stage Two (ages 7 to 11). Schools will be free to choose from French, German, Italian, Mandarin, Spanish, Latin or Ancient Greek. At Key Stage 3 the guidelines stipulate that a modern language must be taught. Most schools already have some provision for teaching languages, but the new guidelines mean that that there will be a more uniform approach across England, with a greater focus on grammar and written language. According to the DfES programme of study: “A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.” With English teenagers scoring lowest for first foreign language skills in a recent European Commission study of 16 countries, the move to starting earlier is a positive first step towards improving language skills in all key stages. From the everlasting lure of the Christmas tree ornaments, just begging to be stripped by curious chubby hands, to the frustration of your little darling refusing to eat any of their lovingly prepared Christmas dinner – not just the Brussels sprouts and perhaps the worst of all, enduring the tuts and “in my day children were seen and not heard” comments of your mother in law. For parents of little ones Christmas can be a fierce test of endurance and Christmas spirit, so are there ways to cope without downing Great Aunt Edna’s 20 year old bottle of sherry in the pantry?

In reality most homes resemble a bomb site by 10am on Christmas morning, children won’t feign joy when unwrapping a boxed handkerchief set from your Grandmother and the only colour to their cheeks will come from the smeared chocolate orange they snaffled from the kitchen at 5am.

Stock up on batteries well beforehand. Even if you don’t think you need them, buy some in every size because inevitably your child’s favourite present will require batteries and you won’t have any that fit, resulting in much trauma for the rest of the day. Alternatively don’t buy toys that need batteries – ever – and save your sanity and nerves when you accidentally set off the freaky doll that says “I want to play” on your way back from the nursery at 3am. Toddlers love boxes, don’t be down-heartened or take It personally when they ignore their lovingly selected presents and prefer to play with the box, this is a universal toddler play law.

Don’t expect your toddler to eat their Christmas lunch,

especially if it involves Brussels sprouts, food tastes stronger and much bitterer to toddlers, to them you may as well be trying to make them eat neat vinegar.

Don’t take any unwanted parenting advice seriously. The chances

are your in-laws, parents, aunts and other relatives have a rose tinted vision of their early parenting years and have forgotten what it was really like. Nod and smile sweetly or better still change the subject when they start to give you advice.

Don’t expect your toddler to sleep well the night before Christmas, the excitement is too much for them, why not give in and let them stay up and fall asleep on the sofa in front of a festive family film?

Be prepared that the idea of Father Christmas can be pretty scary to young children, think about it, would you like a big man with

a long beard in a funny red outfit breaking in to your house whilst you were in bed asleep? You could arrange that you meet him at the door and take in the presents when your child is asleep instead. Much less scary!

Stagger present opening throughout the day or even over a few days so that your toddler doesn’t become overwhelmed (which usually results in a meltdown). Don’t expect your toddler to share his new presents with his or siblings or cousins. Toddlers really

don’t understand the idea of sharing until at least 4 or 5 years old. Imagine if somebody told you to share your presents of new perfume or favourite chocolates as soon as you’d unwrapped them. You wouldn’t like it much either!

Try to restrict the amount of sweets and chocolate that your toddler eats all of the extra sugar and colourings are likely to make him hyper which will have a negative effect on both sleep and behaviour. Plus you can secretly eat them all when he’s gone to bed instead.

Any parent knows how difficult it can be to say ‘no’ to your kids. This is particularly tough at Christmas time when the anticipation and build up can be so intense for some young children, to disappoint them on Christmas day feels like utter cruelty. But the reality is that many parents struggle to find the cash to tick off everything on the list at Christmas and resort to piling up expensive credit card debt to cover the costs. Apart from this sending a really bad message to children that pester power will always get them everything and anything they want, it leaves parents in an unenviable position of playing catch-up on Christmas debt. Many credit cards have interest rates of anything up to 30 per cent, so on top of all the usual household bills, this can become quite a mountain to climb throughout the rest of the year. However awareness is now growing of alternative finance routes; accessible platforms that can help borrowers with good credit records to get unsecured loans for things they want and need at sensible rates. And much of this has come from the revolution in how we use the internet to manage our lives. Peer to peer lending (P2PL) started online in 2005, giving people the opportunity to make the most of their finances through either lending their money to grow their savings, or borrowing at a reasonable rate, to and from their ‘peers’. Backed by a concept of ‘social’ lending, these P2PL platforms keep money within the economy by matching lenders and borrowers directly, without going through banks.

But how does it actually work?

Borrowing money from a P2PL website is no more complicated than applying for a credit card. You first have to register with your chosen site and take some time to understand the terms and how the site operates. You will need to be creditworthy to be accepted on any reputable site, so if you’ve had problems with debt in the past, P2PL may not be for you. Once you have registered on the site, there are generally four basic steps to secure your loan:

Decide how much you want to borrow, how long for, and how much interest you are prepared to pay

Create your loan request. With some sites you will be able to appeal directly to the lenders so you can write (anonymously) about your requirements and why lenders should feel comfortable lending to you. Other sites will look to automatically match you with lenders whose lending preferences match your loan request. Always be truthful because all reputable sites will check your credit references and your ability to repay.

Lenders then supply a portion of your loan each, combining together to satisfy your whole loan.

You accept or reject your loan offer. Assuming you accept the loan, the site will manage the process for you, collecting your repayments and distributing them to the lenders who backed your loan.

P2PL offers flexibility and choice to the borrower, and can be much cheaper. Annual credit card interest costs borrowers around £6.04 billion, based on an average interest rate of 17.1 per cent, with the typical UK consumer holding up to five cards each. If UK borrowers consolidated their credit card debt with a P2P loan at around 8 per cent, then as much as £3.22 billion could be wiped off their credit card bills, leaving a drastically reduced debt cost of £2.82 billion per annum. Of course any form of borrowing isn’t without risk, and as with a credit card or bank loan, if you miss monthly payments, this could seriously harm your credit record. If you feel comfortable with managing debt but just want an affordable option, the internet can offer a valuable guide to the alternatives like P2P lending out there. A quick Google search will reveal most of the P2PL providers, who are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. The Peer to Peer Finance Association (p2pfa.info) is also a good reference point as it requires its members to operate by a strict set of rules to maintain high standards in the industry. Shop around to find the lending platform out there that best suits your needs. Let’s face it, Christmas is never going to be cheap, but there is no reason to pay vastly over the odds to enjoy this special holiday season together.

get your children to behave By Hannah Hunter Picture the scene. You’re at the supermarket and you’ve refused your child something that they want, causing them to freak out and scream loudly. You react by shouting back at them. Before long the situation is out of hand, with both of you at full-volume and people staring. All kids will have a tantrum at some point, some simple steps can help to avoid this behaviour or at least lessen it. Trying a bit of distraction when the anger starts to build up - telling a joke, pulling a silly face - can be really effective. If it’s too late for humour, then take a deep breath and a mental step back. Is their behaviour really unreasonable? Can you just ignore it and carry on with your shopping? Maybe you have a spare few minutes to put the trolley aside and take them out of the situation? It could be either out of that aisle or maybe even out of the supermarket, where you can both calm down.

Positive Parenting This approach may seem like pie in the sky when faced with a screaming 3-year old, but it’s never too early to try what the NSPCC calls ‘positive parenting’. If you show love and affection to your child and praise them when they are behaving well, they will associate getting attention with good behaviour. Active ignoring is encouraged, while physical punishments like smacking should be off limits: “smacking or biting back gives a very confusing message – that it is OK to use force or to hit physically when you are angry or to make a point.” So when you feel like you’re at the end of your tether, try to stay calm. After all, a toddler having a tantrum in the supermarket is one thing, but a screaming adult in the frozen food aisle? Not a good look…

Here are some hints from leading Clinical Psychologist, Professor Tanya Byron, on how to smooth out behavioural problems, and get the best from your child.

Be positive “One of the biggest mistakes we make as parents is to leave our children alone and say nothing to them when they’re behaving nicely. “Ignore the behaviour you don’t want. Instead, emphasise the positive with cuddles, kisses, and praise, and tell them all the things they need to hear in order for them to understand they will get attention for doing things nicely.”

Distraction “As soon as you feel the temper rising, distract them onto something else: a funny song, story, or ‘did you see that green squirrel with orange stripes just fly past the window?’”

Ignoring “Ignoring gives the message that the behaviour gets no reward and if you use this technique alongside praising every lovely behaviour, your children will get a very powerful message.”

Time out “First ask your child to stop misbehaving. If that doesn’t work, ask again, but more firmly. This gives the child two chances to change his or her behaviour, and if they do, you praise them. “If they refuse to stop the behaviour, or if the tantrum escalates, you go for Time Out. Take your child firmly but with no attention to a safe place where you can leave them for a period of one minute for each year of their life (i.e. three minutes for a three-year-old) up to a maximum of five minutes. You should not talk to your child through the door or give them any other form of

attention during the Time Out period. “Once the Time Out period is over, explain to your child why they were Timed Out and then move on and praise them at the first opportunity.”

Tantrums “Tantrums happen to all parents. They do not mean you are a bad parent. You can try to prevent them with praise and sticker charts. If that fails, you can try to distract the tantrums away. But once started, the best way to stop them is to ignore them. “Remember: distract, ignore, but do not punish.”

Rewards “At home, a sticker chart is a great way of encouraging good behaviour. Each time your child is good, give them a sticker. Naughty behaviour gets a ‘sad face’. Points mean prizes - enough stickers get them a treat.”

Positive example “It’s straightforward but it works - your children will copy you. Swear and they will swear, smack and they will smack. rowing pains is one of those terms used to mean many

different things – from bolshy adolescents to pains in the body. In medicine, the term has come to be most commonly used to describe general aches and pains in children that have no serious or sinister cause. They are nothing to do with growth, despite the name. We really don’t know what is causing the pain, but we DO know that it is nothing serious.

Symptoms

When to see a doctor

A typical story of growing pains may be as follows. A young child or 5 or 6 yrs may be brought to see me – it could be a girl or boy. Mum may say that she sometimes wakes at night complaining of pains in her legs. She settles with paracetamol or massaging of her legs. She is completely fine during the day and has been growing and developing with no problems whatsoever. There are no concerns at school. She’s tired on the nights she wakes up and mum is worried that there may be something serious going on. The night-time waking is having an impact on the entire house. This is adding to the anxiety and the entire family wants to know how to make this stop. This is a challenge. I need to make sure that there aren’t any underlying serious medical conditions and so reassure mum. The story and examination are important, particularly as there isn’t a specific test to confirm the diagnosis.

There are serious causes of pains in the body and joints. The list is long, varied and concerning including viral infections, arthritis, leukaemia and bone tumours. These other more serious conditions would cause other symptoms and the pain would be persistent. If the story fits the story I have given here, other conditions are very unlikely, but always go and have a chat with your doctor. I would be more concerned if the child was unwell in any vague way, particularly if there had been a fever, weight loss or worsening and frequent night-time pains. The pain should not be in specific joints – for example in the knee, or in the shoulder or back – and the joints should not be swollen or look abnormal. Growing pains should not effect what the child can do at school or home, and should not interfere with normal development.

In growing pains, the child is well, with no change to the usual bounciness. The age range is 3 to 12 yrs old. There should be no problem with sport and PE or play times at school. The pain is usually general leg pain and is most common in the feet, ankles and calves, but not in the joints. Its felt on both sides – this is very important. If the pain is only on one side it is more likely that there may be a more serious cause. The pains generally come at night time and are NEVER there on waking. The pain may come after increased activity on that evening or day. There should be no worries about how the child is developing and they should be able to do all the things that other children of their age can do. It is worth knowing that increased stress and anxiety can be at the root of growing pains. This is not in every case, but it is worth looking for it.

The following list is a guide. I believe that it’s essential that everyone - at least once in their lives - has brushing? an appointment with an oral health educator. In fact I’d go so far as to say I believe oral health and good mouth health including tooth and interdental brushing should be included on the school curriculum. At Clover House we run regular oral health education sessions for patients of all ages, and particularly the younger ones, under the watchful yet friendly eye of highly experienced oral health educator, Esther Noland. During these one-to-one appointments, Esther analyses diet and oral hygiene techniques and then advises on what changes can be made to make each person’s care of their teeth as effective as it can be. Keeping your mouth healthy does not need to take ages every day. However, effective cleaning around and in between the teeth and gums is essential if you want to have an attractive smile and sweet breath. Diet is so important and an oral health educator such as Esther can help parents identify which foods and drinks are good and not so good for teeth. Eating healthily doesn’t mean you can’t have treats though. It’s often all about timing - sugary treats at a set time: after meals for example rather than regularly throughout the day. Helping patients keep their teeth naturally good looking and healthy should be a top priority for dentists. And even if you feel your oral healthcare isn’t up to scratch, it’s never too late to learn. Research has shown that mouth bacteria is linked to heart disease, diabetes and strokes, so similarly, it’s never too early to start looking after yourself better, and this is why it’s so important for parents to start a thorough oral health regime for their children as soon as possible, making sure they get into the right habits as early as possible. After all, good oral health isn’t just about teeth and gums, it’s about general health for life.

Mums and Dads should not forget to look after themselves while all this is going on, although it sometimes, (always!?) feels like there just isn’t enough time in the day. Hormone changes during pregnancy make your gums much more sensitive to tiny amounts of plaque which is why you may get more bleeding when brushing. “Mouth bacteria have also been linked to low birth weight in babies so don’t ignore your gums if they do bleed when you brush – but don’t panic either, again, a visit to your dentist is advisable.

Top ten teeth tips 1. When you brush at night, don’t rinse your mouth

with water just spit out and leave the excess toothpaste on your teeth, so it goes on working.

Always use a small headed toothbrush and make small circular movements at the gum margin. Brush teeth for 3 to 4 minutes twice a day first thing in the morning and especially last thing at night the most important time. Avoid sugary drinks and snacks between meals. Remember tooth brushing alone is not enough for good oral hygiene. Dental tape must be used to clean in between teeth. Use disclosing tablets to check your tooth brushing technique. Never brush your teeth straight after breakfast, wait between 20 and 30 minutes, or brush them before eating (to get rid of the bacteria before feeding them!) Change your toothbrush every 3 months or sooner if required. Limit sweets to once or twice a week after an evening meal as a special treat.

10. Chew sugar free gum after eating if you are out. This helps reduce the acidity of your mouth, (plaque bacteria like acidic conditions).

Make a Christmas Stocking Make your own personalised stocking, an ideal Christmas gift or a heirloom to treasure for years to come … This is an easy project suitable for adults and children and a perfect way to boost your sewing skills.

Step 1- Marking out the shapes: Start by folding the red felt material in half. Mark out a “J” shaped stocking on one side of the felt. You can draw free hand shape OR download and print our template to draw around. The “J” stocking should measure around 15cm at the top and be around 35 cm in length.

Step 4-Blanket stitch the stocking: Grab the remaining “J” shaped stocking and line it up with the piece you just stitched the heart to. Then pin the two parts together to stop them from moving. Get your threaded needle and, beginning at that top, blanket stitch all around the edge. (TOP tip: If you find that you run out of thread, carefully tie a new length of embroidery thread to the old one with a small knot)

The next step is to cut out all the marked shapes so that you are left with two red stocking shapes, green “top trim” shape and a green heart shape.

Take the green felt heart and one of the stocking shapes and place and pin the heart in the desired position on the stocking. Next get the needle and the thread and begin sewing the heart on the red stocking using a blanket stitch (as shown on the image below). Once you have gone all the way round make a knot on the reverse side.
