Cash boost to improve Sussex air quality Schools and businesses in the most polluted parts of Sussex will get help to improve air quality thanks to a £100,000 cash boost from the Government's Air Quality Fund. It will be used over the next year to help 25 businesses and 25 schools in and around Air Quality Management Areas – where levels of air pollution are highest – which are currently found in Chichester, Horsham, Shoreham, Brighton & Hove, Crawley, Hassocks, Worthing, Lewes and Newhaven.

Goodwood Family Raceday Sunday 10th June Goodwood Racecourse, Chichester, PO18 0PS Goodwood Racecourse will again host its popular Family Raceday, in association with the NSPCC. This summer fixture is a great family day out and an opportunity to introduce younger generations to the ‘sport of kings,’ as well as raising money for a fantastic cause. Giving children a chance to see behind the scenes on the Racecourse, activities on the day include visits to the jockey’s Weighing Room, where they can try on the jockey’s silks and learn about how light the riders have to be. Talks from farriers and vets will give an insight into the care and treatment that racehorses receive, both on and off the course. A mini course walk allows guests both young and old an opportunity to see the unique contours of Goodwood from a horse’s perspective.

Get Social Love it or hate it, social media is a great way to share ideas and find out what's going on locally - so we spoke to two lovely ladies running local Facebook groups about their experience.
What prompted you to start your Facebook group? The Zero Waste movement is still very fresh, though a lot of the ideas and principles it includes are traditional. Some of us might still have grandparents who lived in and remember pre-plastic, "make do and mend" days, when resources were scarce and cherished, but it can be hard to start new habits when you haven't grown up to be taught those values. In order to reduce our impact, we really have to be able to turn to shared experiences, and Facebook groups are a great place to start.
What's your top tip for new zero wasters? Think of the ideal outcome as a circular economy. Try not to fall into "greenwashed" convenience like recycled paper products, and instead think "Do I really need to use something disposable in the first place?". Recycling is great, but it's also incredibly resource heavy, so we need to aim for more permanent solutions. And if there's something you can't let go of just yet (like me and my hair bleach) start with bamboo toothbrushes and bulk refills first! What do you find the biggest challenge with reducing waste in your home? The cost of initially going waste free. It does take a lot more effort but in the long-term it makes absolute sense. With very young children, it's often not cost effective to make all of their snacks etc. So invariably I do buy some because I am not time rich. They do however like snacks such as seeds, popcorn and homemade flapjack, so don't expect crisps etc.
How can people help out in the local community? Check the Surfers against Sewage website (www.sas.org.uk) and get involved in local beach cleans, or become a Community Leader for your area and start your own. This prompts a domino effect, as you can then learn as a community which single-use plastics to give up. On a family level, I would see what litter picking or beach cleaning groups are already in force. Any groups like children's clubs, walking groups, scouts, they all take an avid interest in keeping our planet well.
With the ethos of 'trash nothing', Freegle is a fantastic resource for offering up items that you no longer want for free to anyone in your local area. You can also put in a request for an item you are looking for. There's an app and you can get daily updates on what is on offer in your area...anything from furniture to odd balls of wool! Don't throw it away, give it away!

What do you think is the most important message? To adopt the notion of becoming a conscious consumer. We are the ones leading the manufacturers to make so much for us to choose from. May Day Festival

Join the Lord and Lady of the May on the Castle Forecourt and see the crowning of the May Queen. Visitors are invited to dance around the Maypole with brightly coloured ribbons intertwined. This age old custom is followed by demonstrations of May Day Dancing accompanied by 16th century music and a playlet about the traditional story of the battle of the seasons. Meet the mythical Jack-in-the-Green and follow the Green Man from folklore in a traditional May Day procession through the gardens, as he wakes up the plants for summer with the help of children and their magical May bells. There’s also a Green Man trail through the Castle and children can have their face painted* (*additional charge).

A day of enjoyment and exploration focusing on the most famous aspect of the site – the stunning mosaic floors. This special event gives visitors of all ages a chance to find out more about mosaics, how they are designed and made, and to try some mosaic making for themselves. Younger visitors can enjoy making an edible mosaic using sweet treats in a special workshop. There will also be a chance to dress in Roman costume and find out how a mosaic floor would feel underfoot.

Bluebell Railway launches their 1st music festival, exciting news for music and steam lovers alike and offering something very different to the music festival scene this year. A boutique music festival featuring well known acts accessible by heritage steam train. Hosted at its charming Horsted Keynes station, as seen in ITV’s Downton Abbey, situated halfway on an 11 mile stretch of railway line set in the beautiful Sussex countryside. Music fans can catch steam trains direct to the festival site, with the option to camp. The parade starts at Denton Gardens at 10am, moves along the promenade before snaking its way around the town centre, finally arriving at Steyne Gardens at approximately 11.30am. This year's theme is “Harry Potter - Witches, Wizards, Fantastic Beasts and anything in between.

Barn Dance

A fabulous evening of barn dancing and feasting in the stunning Elizabethan Great Barn. The gates will open at 6.30pm for exploring the site followed by a tremendous Hog Roast buffet served from 7pm. The barn dancing will begin at 8pm with the brilliant Brighton Ceilidh Collective and the final dance will end at 11pm. Ticket prices are £30 per adult, £15 per child (aged 3 to 12) or £90 per family ticket for 2 adults and 2 children. Under 3s go free.

Medieval Tournament

The Little Gardener

Artist Nicola Benge will take you on a trip across the seas in this hot and spicy celebration of Mexican culture and festivals with music, dancing and crafting. Block is about life in the city; its contradictions and challenges. Twenty oversized blocks are deconstructed and reformed to create different cityscapes for the performers to play on, move with and explore.
