Are you Entitled to Free Childcare? In April 2017, the Government launched a new system called the Tax Free Childcare Vouchers Scheme offering a new form of childcare vouchers. It also increased free childcare hours. Whereas previously, childcare vouchers were a benefit offered by employers and free childcare hours were simply provided by nurseries, there is now a registration process and an eligibility criteria to meet. Mischief Makers 2018 Summer Reading Challenge Children's reading can 'dip' during the summer holidays if they don't have regular access to books and encouragement to read for pleasure. The annual Summer Reading Challenge helps get three quarters of a million children into libraries each year to maintain their reading skills and confidence. 2018 will be the 20th challenge. It’s open to primary school children of every ability. This year the challenge will focus on the theme of mischief and pranks, as inspired by the much-loved Beano comic, which celebrates its 80th anniversary next year. Children are challenged to read at least six library books over the school holidays and collect incentives, such as stickers, to earn

Creating Lasting Family Memories By Alex Gregory What are the childhood experiences you remember? For me, it’s the things I did outside with my family and, interestingly, they weren’t always long or complicated activities. I remember digging a really deep hole in the garden with dad, so deep I could hide inside it. I remember the day when we crossed the fields to the stream not far from home and ate an apple while sitting on a branch overhanging the water. Getting outdoors is beneficial for adults as well as children. It’s something that’s available to everybody, it’s free, it’s healthy, it’s fun and, most importantly, it has the potential to create wonderful lasting memories.
So, what can you do together that will create lasting memories? Sunrise and Sunset Moments There’s nothing more rewarding or simple. You’ll need to find a suitable location, at the top of a hill, or anywhere from where you can clearly see the sun rising or falling. If your children are anything like mine they will run about, climb trees or moan about being cold. That’s fine, don’t get frustrated, it’s all part of the experience. The greatest gift you will ever receive will arrive in 20 years’ time when one of them turns to you and says “remember that time you woke me up before school and we climbed the hill to watch the sunrise. That was amazing!”
Cooking over a Fire We often cook dinner outside in the garden. The kids get involved, cutting up the vegetables, mixing in ingredients and turning food. It’s fun and they get very engrossed. Roughly chopped veg in a foil parcel with a spot of olive oil, chicken or sausages on
a metal grate or sweet potatoes wrapped in foil and buried in the embers are great options. They all cook quickly and easily, taste delicious and can be eaten whilst sitting around the fire together!
Make a Bird Feeder Turn a plastic bottle upside down, unscrew the lid and push it through a small plastic saucer. Fill the bottle with birdseed, screw the cap back on to hold the saucer in place and cut some holes in the bottle near the saucer to allow the seed to drop out. Hung from a tree this is a perfect, recycled bird feeder that is sure to attract a whole host of different birds wherever you live. This practical activity will be so rewarding for your child and the results can be seen immediately.
Sleep in a Hammock As long as there are two trees to which the hammock can be fastened, then you can have a wonderful night out under the stars. You can easily tie a rope directly overhead and lay a tarpaulin over the top to keep the rain off, creating an exciting, den-like feel. There’s nothing to beat drifting off to sleep outdoors while gently swinging in the breeze!
If you discover a hedgehog in your garden or nearby, then why not build a hedgehog house together? This can be a complicated palace or just an upturned wooden box, weatherproof and hidden in the corner of the garden. However you decide to do it, I promise you when your child discovers a hedgehog has moved into the house they made, their pleasure, pride and excitement will be long enduring.
Fishing by Hand The underwater world has certainly grabbed my children’s imaginations and they now love nothing more than to be knee deep in a stream investigating the depths. In British rivers we have these wonderful little camouflaged fish called Bullheads. They hide under rocks in fast flowing streams, sometimes living their whole lives under the same rock. With a little patience and guile, it’s possible to catch these little fish for a few moments using just your hands. The excitement of a first catch is unforgettable.
Ingredients
Let the kids cool down in style with healthy homemade ice lollies. There is no limit to the range, as you can use any fruit you like – and even smuggle in some veggies!
• 400gof frozen (or fresh) berries. A mix is great - I use blueberries and strawberries • 1/2 tin of coconut milk • 400g natural yoghurt • 1 tbsp maple syrup (use a little less or more depending on how sweet your fruit is) • 1tsp vanilla

I spent many happy days making a bridge over my grandparent’s pond. I’ve done it with my kids since and they loved it too. Push two sticks firmly into the ground and cross them over to form an X. Repeat this a little further away, then lay more sticks across the X’s. Do this across a river, stream or pond, or even across your garden creating a walkway just above the water or ground. It’s simple and great fun.
Build a Hedgehog House
Home-made Yoghurt and Berry Coconut Ice Lollies
Whipping up a batch of homemade ice lollies makes for a quick and exciting summer project for kids and these are a breeze to make. All you need is a food processor or blender, ice lolly moulds and a bit time to allow them to set. Here is my favourite recipe for yoghurt and berry ice lollies, which is also one of the easiest!
Build a Bridge

Instructions
• Place all ingredients into a blender or food processor and blitz until smooth. • Pour the mixture into your ice-lolly moulds and attach the freeze top. • Freeze for a minimum of 4 hours until solid. • Warm the moulds under water to release the pops when you are ready to eat them. Supporting Many parents will naturally
harbor safety concerns in the early stages of learning. The best way to help the child from suffering a fall is to aid their balance. This should be done from behind and under their armpits or on the chest. It is better than holding the saddle and the bars so that the child becomes accustomed to the weight distribution and controlling the handlebars. It also gives you, the parents, more control over wobbles and potential crashes.

Location While it might be tempting to
choose a soft, grassy area for cycling practice, this will actually be more challenging to pedal on. A smooth, tarmac surface that is relatively open and away from traffic is ideal as it helps the child to pick up some rolling momentum and gauge how the bike responds to their body movements.
Avoid Stabilisers The assumption
is that early stage riding must be done with stabilisers. This isn’t recommended as the child will learn the wrong weight distribution and begin exaggerated handlebar movements instead of leaning when they are turning the bike. If you don’t have a balance bike you can take the pedals off, lower the saddle so their feet are flat on the floor and they can learn the basic of controlling and walking the bike step by step. familiesonline.co.uk
Bike Setup Make sure the bike fits,
rather than buying them a bike to grow into. A lighter weight bike will be much easier for the child to learn on. Ensure the saddle is the correct height. The child should only be able to rest the balls of their feet on the ground to stabilise. Though it may feel secure in the first instance to rest flat feet on the ground, the child’s knees will come up too high and interfere with steering.
Balance Many children will have already
ridden a balance bike, whether this is the case or not, it is good practice to roll on the bike without pedalling. Sit in the saddle and touch toes to the ground. Then, using big stride, pick up a bit of speed and roll as far as possible without touching the pedals.
Braking The best way for children to
grasp the concept of braking is for them to walk alongside the bike with their hands in position. At their first attempt, most children will grab the brakes firmly resulting in a sudden stop. Practice using the brakes to come to a stop in a controlled manner and remind children to prepare to put their feet down as they come to a halt, this may take a few prompts.
to learn the association between pedalling and forward motion, parents should ensure they assist accordingly; if the child stops pedaling, then pushing should be stopped too.
Pedalling Once they have gained an
understanding of how to balance the bike, position the child’s feet on the pedals with their stronger leg higher up, just below the down tube. Explain that - to set off - they must push hard with their stronger leg whilst setting off with their standing leg. This may take a few practices to master. Ensure children are covering their brakes in case they set off too fast.
Progress When the child is comfortably
pedalling, let them try to pedal the bike in a straight line, stopping at a specific point. Depending on the progress thus far, this may require a little or a lot of assistance. More advanced tasks would be riding around corners, maintaining awareness of surroundings as well as riding ‘S’ bend routes or riding continuously for five minutes.
Awareness Children can often be distracted by pedalling as it may be a new movement. Ensure they keep their head up and don’t look down at their feet. Also if there are friends or family on bikes ahead of them, tell them to look around before they pull the brakes and don’t stop too suddenly.

Join Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn and the Knights of Royal England in the procession to the Jousting arena. Battling it out in the saddle and on foot in one-to-one combat, the valiant knights will then compete for points to find this season’s ultimate champion. Bring a blanket or watch the joust in style from the medieval spectator stands, available for a small cost on a first-come, first-served basis. Then choose which knights you support and cheer them to glory.

Swim Safe is a fun and free water safety activity for children, founded by the RNLI and Swim England. Every year, RNLI lifeguards race to the rescue of children and adults who find themselves in difficulty in and near the water. Swim Safe teaches children aged 7-14 essential water safety skills through a fun session delivered by trained instructors. Children learn where is safe to swim, how to float, what to do if something goes wrong and how to call for help if someone else is in trouble. The 60-minute session is run by qualified lifeguards and instructors. To take part, your child must be able to swim a minimum of 25 metres. The Brighton Pride Festival is a vibrant celebration of all that is wonderful about Brighton & Hove’s diverse community. Headliners for Pride 2018 include Britney Spears, Ella Eyre and Pixie Lott, while the LoveBN1 Fest on the Sunday will feature Nile Rodgers & Chic, plus Jess Glynne and Gabrielle. The Pride Parade starts at Hove Lawns at 11am on Saturday 4th August and travels through the city centre with spectacular show stopping sights as music, floats, bands, costumes and dancing combine to create a truly unique Pride experience. The annual Summer Jousting Tournaments begin at Hever castle on 14 and 15 July. The Knights of Royal England will be entertaining the crowds with exhilarating displays of action, stunts, falls and fights in an authentic arena complete with a Royal Box. Join Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn and the Knights of Royal England in the procession to the Jousting arena. Battling it out in the saddle and on foot in one-to-one combat, the valiant knights will then compete for points to find this season’s ultimate champion. Bring a blanket or watch the joust in style from the medieval spectator stands, available for a small cost on a first-come, first-served basis. Ground displays open 10am - 6pm daily, with flying from lunchtime until approx. 5pm. These are free, non-ticketed events - just turn up, pick your spot and enjoy the film on the giant 40ft inflatable screen. No alcohol will be available for purchase, though you are welcome to take your own. The films will start at 8:45pm.

Swim Safe is a fun and free water safety activity for children, founded by the RNLI and Swim England. Every year, RNLI lifeguards rescue children and adults who find themselves in difficulty in and near the water. Swim Safe teaches children aged 7-14 essential water safety skills through a fun session delivered by trained instructors. Children learn where is safe to swim, how to float, what to do if something goes wrong and how to call for help if someone else is in trouble. The 60-minute session is run by qualified lifeguards and instructors. To take part, your child must be able to swim a minimum of 25 metres. A parent or guardian must be present throughout the session. 2pm and 3:15pm.
