How to choose the best nursery for your child For many parents, nurseries are the ideal choice for childcare. They offer working hours, with a lot of flexibility - you can choose hours to suit you, from a few half days to full working weeks. Nurseries give children the opportunity to socialise with groups of other children and adults. They can also give a reassuring continuity of care, with an assigned key worker. Your child may be at the same setting from babyhood, right until they start at school.

Finding the right nursery can be a difficult and stressful process. The first time you hand over full-time care of your precious offspring to someone else is always going to be emotional, so you want to be absolutely sure that you have made the right choice for all of you.

See if you can find out any first hand information from friends (though bear in mind what’s good for one family might not work for another).

Look out for children’s work on the walls, and staff who actually play with the kids rather than stand around chatting.

Your child’s personality - Is your child quiet and shy, or loud and outgoing? Do they love playing outdoors, or prefer indoor games? It seems obvious, but try to match the nursery to your child’s interests. Your own needs! There might be a

wonderful nursery half an hour drive away from you, but consider how will both of your tiredness levels be after this daily journey - would you be better to find somewhere closer that is a good fit? Equally the most convenient, say a work-place nursery, may not be the best for your child.

Learning through play

There is so much pressure on parents to ensure their child can write their own name before they start school, or count to 100, and identify all types of unrecognisable shapes, and name all manners of colours. Comparing children’s abilities is not a new concept by any means, but the focus on the intellectual is surpassing the physical that we are beginning to tip the scales to such an extent that our children are not able to run in the correct and natural manner, nor are they coordinated or balanced. This is why I personally like the EYFS. In its true form it is supposed to give you a framework to develop your child with an all-round view, to give them strong foundations on which they can build, grow and develop, and each criterion should be given the same amount of focus. There are arguments to say that the physical development side could be given more focus, because if done in an appropriate manner, as you build, develop and improve gross motor skills, fine motor skills, balance and co-ordination you automatically address language and communication: you can bring in math, numbers, colours, shapes and all the necessary academia in a fun and engaging manner. What does Ewell Castle offer to parents (and pupils)

Ewell Castle has dedicated, caring and professional staff who always have the child’s best interests at heart. We are a small, happy and friendly school, which from September 2015 will become fully co-educational, as girls will be joining Yrs 7 and 9. All our pupils benefit from excellent pastoral care, small class sizes and individual academic attention. Self esteem is enhanced and all aspects of personal development are fostered.

Although each term is different, they’re all busy. During the Autumn Term there are numerous academic reviews as well as social events and the Junior School Christmas productions. During Spring Term we look forward to Arts Week, which involves our Music, Drama, Art/Photography and D&T Departments and during the Summer Term, pupils are busy with exams as well as Sports Day, for example.

What is your biggest headache/challenge at the moment?

One of the biggest challenges is ensuring as many people as possible know what a great school Ewell Castle is and that from September 2015 we will become fully coeducational.

We will be continuing to roll out our ECSports Academy by launching other sports within the programme. Our big development for next year will be the move towards full co-education throughout the School, as we welcome girls into Years 7 and 9 in addition to the Junior School and the Sixth Form.

I arrived at Ewell Castle in January this year so it’s a little premature to think of my best memories; however, some of the highlights of this year have included the Senior School production of “Fools”, Ewell Rocks music evening, the opening of our state of the art new Nursery building, various Junior School productions and watching the rugby.
