Hello! I’m Rachel, new editor of Families Fife, Tayside and Crieff. Thank you to Deborah, your outgoing editor, for her time as editor and her help and support in handing over to me. My first issue comes at one of my favourite times of year. Days are getting longer and signs of Spring are all around. And, of course… Easter! Will you be joining in a Cadbury Easter Egg Hunt at an NTS property near you? I’m a mum of two young boys and we love to get outdoors, so there’s lots to choose from over the coming weeks. We recently spent a brilliant snowy morning at the Ecology Centre in Kinghorn and will be joining them for their Mini Growers sessions. My oldest son is a big railway fan so the Model Steam Weekend at the Dundee Museum of Transport is definitely in the calendar. I’m sure you’ll find lots of ideas for your own family within the magazine. Dundee Museum of Transport is the one of the City’s newest heritage attractions. Centrally located on Market Street, the Museum opened in 2014 and has since welcomed thousands of visitors to much acclaim. The Museum tells the remarkable stories of local transport pioneers and has a changing display of vehicles from local and national collections. The development of the tram network, railway and maritime tradition in Dundee and the surrounding areas can be discovered through a number of interactive displays and fascinating objects. A highlight for many visitors is the much-loved magical car Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and the impressive recreation of Dundee’s first flying machine. Established by a dedicated group

There is now an annual events programme that includes the Model Steam Weekend (April & September), Bus & Coach Sunday (17th June) and the Emergency Vehicle Day (15th July). 35 Years of Puppet Animation Festival Puppet Animation Festival is the UK’s largest and longest established annual performing arts event for children, celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2018. Puppet Animation Festival programmes a diverse programme of puppet theatre, puppetry making workshops and animated films for children
between the ages of 0-12. The Festival brings quality theatre and animated films to audiences across Scotland. The Festival isn’t just for kids though. We want parents and guardians to get involved and have fun too, allowing the whole family to connect with one another and their local community through creativity.

Birthday year for The Ecology Centre The Ecology Centre is an established charity and social enterprise that provides direct experience of the natural environment to improve people’s quality of life. Based in a stunning location on the banks of Kinghorn Loch in Kinghorn, the Centre offers a number of educational and volunteering programmes. We have been delivering acclaimed outdoor learning to schools, nurseries and various youth groups for nearly 20 years. This year, we are celebrating our 20th year and have lots of exciting plans and events to celebrate this milestone. The dedicated team offer a rich range of fun activities for children which foster effective learning through encounters with nature. We have worked with over 30 Fife schools in the past 3 years and have ongoing projects with several groups where young people need extra support. Environmental education is at the heart of the organisation as is encouraging children outside to play. The site the Centre is on is public owned land and the team manage it to ensure it’s a safe and inviting place for everyone to come and enjoy. There’s lots for children (and adults!) to explore, including making mud pies and running around in the Mud Kitchen, or camping out in the children’s bird hide, looking out for the different birds and geese visiting the loch. There’s plenty for the adults too – a
journey around the ‘Snake garden’ and polytunnel investigating (and tasting!) all the different fruits, vegetables and herbs that are growing is a real treat. The site is open all year round and there are always events running for the little ones to enjoy. In the school holidays the Eco Adventures Holiday Club we run is a holiday club with a difference. Children aged 5 – 9 spend their holidays exploring the site, playing games, learning bush craft skills or having fun with arts, crafts and conservation. Our NEW Mini Growers programme started last year and was a hit! Funded by the Edinburgh Airport Community Fund, this fantastic new club is for toddlers and pre-school children, with their parents/carers, to have a go at gardening and enjoy crafting with nature in our community garden. The sessions offer a hands-on experience of the natural environment and the opportunity to learn in a fun way about growing and eating local food, wildlife and our natural resources. Mini Growers is springing back in April! It begins on Thursday 19th April, 10-11am, and runs every Thursday until October 25th.
Golden show to visit four Theatres in Scotland
Award-winning dance company balletLORENT is looking forward to returning to Scotland with its magical family show Rumpelstiltskin. This eagerly-awaited production premiered in Newcastle to outstanding reviews and has been nominated for ‘Best Family Event’ in the Fantastic for Families national awards supported by the Arts Council. “Excellent performance... extremely high production values... compelling music and beautifully realised.” British Theatre Guide. a local cast of eight children and four older people chosen through workshops at schools and knitting groups who will join the professional dancers on stage. Children’s Authors Top of the Pops in Libraries The kids are taking over the libraries! Seven children’s authors - Julia Donaldson, Daisy Meadows, Roderick Hunt, Francesca Simon, Adam Blade, Jacqueline Wilson and Roald Dahl – are among the top 10 most borrowed authors in UK libraries, according to figures from annual data released by the British Library.
David Walliams’ popularity continues to soar and he’s now the nineteenth most borrowed author, up from forty first place in 2014-15. Jeff Kinney does not make it into the top ten authors but his Diary of a Wimpy Kid series is clearly a big hit with kids with eight titles in the series featuring in the top 10 most borrowed children’s fiction titles. For parents looking for something for their ‘reluctant reader,’ this library data provides a helpful guide to what other children love.

73 Questions a Day! So What’s the Problem? British children aged 1 to 6 ask an average 73 questions every day... half of which parents struggle to answer, according to a recent study conducted by One Poll. Children are at their most inquisitive at 4 years old and boys and girls tend to be just as curious as each other. Almost a third of parents in the study find this constant barrage of questions exhausting, lasting as it often does from the time children wake until they drop off to sleep at night. Almost half of the parents interviewed admit that they struggle to find an answer 50% of the time, turning to Google for help, whilst nearly one third confessed to

making up answers on the spot. Fathers field the most questions but mothers still deal with an average of 413 per week. Enjoy Wild Time Outdoors By Claire Winter One of the greatest joys you can have as a parent is to see your kids run free outside - watching the delight on their faces and listening to their laughter as they hide in long grass, get muddy or roll down a hill. With increasing pressure from work and school, families are struggling to find free time to be in nature. It seems there is an epidemic of families and children who aren’t getting to go outside enough. According to a report commissioned by Persil for their ‘Dirt is Good’ campaign, British children are spending less time outside than adult prisoners! 74% of kids are spending less than an hour outdoors every day. A third only spend half an hour, and one in five don’t go out at all. Also, a recent government funded survey showed that one in nine kids haven’t been in a natural environment, like a park, forest or beach for at least 12 months. Being outside is good for children’s general wellbeing and mental cognition. Kids are shown to be happier, healthier, more confident and less anxious when they spend time in nature. Equally, adults benefit from being outside with their children too. Serotonin levels are higher in your body after you have spent time in daylight and being in fresh air also helps you sleep better. With increasing pressure at school, parents who work, after-school clubs, screen time and homework to do, children generally have a lot less free time. Unstructured time outside and in nature is something that has become a luxury rather than a necessity. Organisations like The Wild Network are trying to encourage families to get back outside. Their mission is to ‘rewild’ childhood and give children more #wildtime. Their groundbreaking film has been seen across the world, and they have a wild time learning project in which over 200 schools have taken part. one of the few things left that is fun, free and good for you and yet most families don’t get enough of it. Other than the more obvious benefits like better physical and mental wellbeing, which are increasingly well evidenced, it is now proven that Wild Time can support learning too, through better concentration, imagination, resilience and capacity to rapidly process risk - all vital tools that children will need to thrive in the 21st century.” If you want more time in nature with your family try and make time at the weekends to take them to a beach, wood, forest or river. If you’re on a budget, or short on time, find your local park and enjoy the green, open space. Do some running races, climb a tree and make a camp. The urban farm movement is also a great way to give your children a taste of the country life. The best thing about spending time in nature is that it is as free as the air you breathe. Pack some sandwiches and the world is your oyster. Keep your phone in your bag and gadgets at home. Enjoy playing hide and seek, rock pooling, jumping a stream and finding bugs under a rotten branch.
Here are some simple tips to encourage Wild Time: 1. Create a Den in the garden. Get the kids to help build it. They could even camp in it overnight! 2. Invest in some wellies and waterproofs so that you can go outside, rain or shine. 3. Grow some fruit and vegetables. You can do this by using pots on the windowsill or by using a small patch in the garden. 4. Start an animal watch list that children can tick off. 5. Create some landscape art. Use twigs, leaves, shells or stones, and photograph what you have made. 6. Make walks fun – do some of the walk blindfolded! Or make a treasure map of things your children have to find. 7. Try geocaching (www.geocaching.com). This does involve using an app but might encourage a reluctant nature explorer who won’t be parted from a device.
8. Let older children have some freedom. Get them to walk, explore and go out on their bikes without adults. 9. Research some outdoor activities or exercise classes that you can do as a family, like an outdoor boot camp or mountain bike riding. 10. Sign up to the National Trust’s ‘50 Things To Do Before You’re 11¾.’

Children learn new skills with All Stars Cricket All Stars Cricket was launched in March 2017. The programme has had an incredible first year with over 1,500 All Stars Cricket centres delivering the programme to over 37,000 kids. In addition, the end of year parent survey yielded very positive results with 85% of parents wanting their child to return in 2018 and bring a friend! All Stars Cricket provides boys and girls from 5 to 8 years old with an opportunity to become a star. The national curriculum of fun, cricket activities and games provides children with the basic movement skills to begin a lifelong love of physical activity. The programme cost (RRP £40, with some regional variations) includes the 8 week All Stars Cricket programme (1 x hour session per week for 8 weeks) and the pack; including a bat, ball, rucksack, cap and t shirt (personalised with their name) – all delivered to your door. The pack also includes an Activity book
that allows children and parents to engage with the programme using several weekly challenges to earn ‘star awards’ like bowling, catching, running, and teamwork. The programme is delivered by trained volunteers who deliver game based activities that teach basic cricket skills like catching, throwing, and hitting a moving ball, and social skills like team work and communication. Held at accredited cricket clubs, these courses are a perfect way for children to learn about cricket and make friends in safe and, most importantly, fun environment. Spring into Easter fun with the National Trust for Scotland The National Trust for Scotland is getting ready to celebrate Easter and the arrival of spring with its annual Cadbury Easter Egg Hunts. Dozens of events take place at the conservation charity’s properties from Culzean Castle in Ayrshire to Inverewe Garden in Wester Ross from 30 March to 2 April. Two unusual locations are joining in the fun for 2018 – Barry Mill, an operational water mill in Carnoustie and the Tenement House, a traditional Glaswegian tenement flat. There are also exciting new experiences for visitors this Easter, as the Trust unveils two major new developments: The Easter bunny will find a new friend at Brodie Castle this spring, with the opening of the Playful Garden. This unique, familyfriendly garden experience will be full of surprises, colourful stories and giant sized fun, including Brodie bunny – at more than 6.5 metres, he’s about the biggest rabbit sculpture in Scotland. Family fun at Newhailes, East Lothian has got a big boost too, as they get ready to open ‘Weehailes’ a magical play area inspired by the special place of books and learning in the history of one of Scotland’s most impressive historical attractions.

Five Early Signs of Autism Early diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder can mean parents don’t have to wait for their child to start school to implement intervention programs Early autism intervention programmes can address the primary behavioural symptoms of autism in children from as young as 18 months of age and can have long term positive effects. Many children with autism appear to be developing typically until they start pre-school or kindergarten, when language and social delays stand out in contrast to the development of their peers. These five signs of autism can be observed in children as young as 12 to 24 months of age.

Your child does not look when you point at something. A child with autism may not look when you point at an object across the room and may not follow your gaze when you look at something.

Your child does not point with one finger to request items or get help. A child with autism may not use gestures like pointing with one finger to ask for things or to direct your attention.

Your child does not respond to his or her name. Children with autism may not understand the response you expect when you say their name, or they may not be motivated to respond in the same way as a typically developing child.

Your child avoids looking you in the eye. A child with autism may find eye contact challenging or painful and may avoid looking you in the eye when you are talking to, playing with, or dressing him or her.

News from Lauriston Nursery What an action packed start to the year we have had at Lauriston. During January, we settled into a new year with lots of new friends joining us. As we were welcomed with a few days of snowfall, staff and children had a great time exploring the snow and ice, making creative snowmen, snow angels and having snow ball fights. Many children were interested in the ice, how it forms and how it melts, so spent some time learning all about different properties. Other topics of interest have been: ‘where
food comes from’, ‘under the sea’, ‘planets’ and ‘road safety’. In February, we celebrated Lauriston at Dunfermline’s 9th birthday. We are all looking forward to creating many more fun memories in 2018. As March and April approaches, we are looking forward to another ‘egg-cellent’ Easter. There will be lots of fun activities on offer from decorating eggs to Easter bonnet competitions. How Early Learning Can Predict a Child’s Success By Dr Robert Titzer
You may be surprised to learn that the long term effects of children learning language and maths skills at an early age is one of the greatest predictors of their financial success as adults. How can this be possible you may ask? With the many confounding variables such as a child’s IQ, formal education and socio-demographic background, it’s hard to believe that early reading or maths skills can be one of the most important factors associated with doing well as an adult. However, a 2013 study from the University of Edinburgh1 shows that early maths and reading abilities have major long-term benefits. Children who performed better in reading and maths tests at age 7 were shown to be more likely to earn higher wages later in life according to researchers. Children who had advanced by just one grade level in reading by age 7 earned an average of £5,000 per year more at age 42 than their classmates. The study also concluded that “mathematical and reading ability at age 7 are substantially and positively correlated with financial success at age 42, independently of relevant confounding variables.” In other words, it was the actual reading and maths abilities at age 7 – not just the child’s socioeconomic status, the child’s IQ, or other factors – that had a lasting impact on the person’s life chances. Understanding Words Research consistently indicates
that the earlier a child learns language skills, the better the long term outcome. A well-known study in 19952 found that the number of words spoken to a child by age 3 was a better predictor of a child’s vocabulary at age 11 than the parents’ IQs, parents’ socioeconomic status, or which school the child attended. A more recent study on the topic found that babies who learned more words by 18 months of age had greater vocabularies at age 3. In addition, the researchers found that 18-month-old babies who knew more words had faster brain processing speed. The study also concluded that the “language gap” that exists by 18 months of age would be hard to overcome, meaning that babies who had been taught fewer words in the first 18 months of life could have later delays in learning language skills3. Early Reading and Maths Skills Reading problems at an early age are hard to counter-act later on in life. Very few children who cannot read at the appropriate level at the end of first grade ever catch up. There are also significant advantages in learning to read early. Studies back in the 1960s concluded that children who were taught to read at ages 3 or 4 read better than children of the same IQ who were taught at ages 5 or 6. Those with the same IQs who were taught at ages 7 or 8 were even farther behind. Six years later, the children who were taught to read earlier were still ahead of the same IQ

children who were taught later. In addition, the earlier the child was taught to read, the more likely the child enjoyed reading. Parental involvement in teaching children about reading and writing words is also related to the development of early literacy skills. In turn, early literacy skills directly predict word reading at the end of first grade (age 6-7 years) and indirectly predict
reading in third grade (age 8-9 years). Word reading at the end of first grade predicts reading comprehension in third grade. So, if you are wondering how to give your infant a head start in life, it’s worth investigating the resources available to help you teach little ones language and maths skills as early as possible.
