amilies asked Amanda and Lisa, local party experts from Let’s Pretend for their top ten tips to minimize the panic and maximize the fun factor. 1 Choose a theme 2 Decide on the number of guests 3 Have a sibling/no sibling policy and stick to it for all those little brothers/sisters/ distant cousins that are within the age group of the birthday boy/girl but not really their friend 4 Decide if you will need to book a venue and book it now if needed 5 Send out the invites in good time (usually a month in advance) 6 Party bags - good variety of online suppliers, but remember to order in plenty of time. 7 Food keep it simple and juice is best served in boxes/bottles to avoid big spills 8 With a week to go, follow up on any guest who hasn’t replied yet 9 Cater for the maximum you’ve invited so that there’s no one disappointed 10 Assume guests who haven’t replied may turn up.

A new website has been set up to provide information and guidance for smoking parents, helping them to protect their children from the effects of tobacco smoke in the home. Rather than ask parents to quit smoking, REFRESH aims to give parents information on secondhand smoke and helpful tips on how to create a smoke-free home so that parents can make their own choice about their children’s exposure to tobacco smoke.  Visit the Refresh website at www.refreshproject.org.uk

ell what a summer that was? No, of course I am not referring to the weather, which was, at best, shockingly bad. My reference is of course to the Olympics. I really don’t know what we are going to watch now it’s all over. There was something very comforting and luxurious about putting the TV on at any time of the day or night and being rewarded with world class sport every time. And didn’t we do well? Stay at home parents have never had it so good! At this point it may be fair to point out that I have hitherto never shown the slightest interest in sport actively or even passively. But I still say hurrah and a massive well done to those who do and competed and did Britain proud. And so humble every one of them. Amazing. Back to reality now then and back at school. The long holiday is over and it’s time to knuckle under and get into the old routines like making schools shoes disappear and forgetting the lunch money. Its also time to choose the activities and classes for your children that will see them through the coming term so turn to the centre pages to read our guide to local clubs and classes. And don’t fear, after a packed summer, there is still plenty to do in the region with Open Doors Day to keep us busy on Sundays in September and the last of the seasons shows with many towns also celebrating seasonal produce with Apple days. Young time travellers... pick up your passport to the past!

n Sundays throughout September children are invited to bring their parents out to explore through the doors of places that are normally a bit secret … for free! Search for the Doors Open Days booklet on-line or on Fife Direct, phone in, email a request, or pick up a booklet at the library or other public office. This booklet is a family passport for finding out about all sorts of places, why they are there and how things work. This year you can find out how lighthouses flash, how our breakfast porridge is milled or even look in a police cell. You can hunt for unusual church carvings, see how buses are made and explore caves never open to the public before. There are towers to climb and stories to be heard. You can even learn what happens in the crematorium. Three days will not be enough! The Children’s Passport gives under-16 yr olds the chance to win a book about history of Fife. Download from Doors Open Days, Fife and Childrens Passports, get a passport from your teacher, or from any of the 68 venues. Answer the special questions in four different venues across the three Sundays. Venue staff will stamp or sign your passport and four correct answers returned to the organiser will become eligible for the prize draw.  Fife Council supports the event across three Sundays; 2nd, 9th and 16th September. It’s altogether a great chance to have three entertaining days out for free!

ed Cinema is a community run cinema that offers a high quality cinema experience in an atmosphere so relaxed you could go along in your slippers. The North Queensferry volunteerled project offers a full sized screen showing movies of your choice in a family friendly setting and all for around half the usual price. Currently based in the village school and run by residents, the scheme is backed by the British Federation of Film Societies who loan the villagers a cinema grade twelve foot screen and a high quality projector. With six screenings a year it’s a small start but if you become a member you can get cheaper tickets and the chance to influence what will be shown. Currently it costs just £12 for a great night out for a family of four and so far the Red Cinema has screened Bugsy Malone, which was accompanied by a real live custard pie fight; the Japanese animation film The Secret World of Arriety (think Japanese Borrowers) and the Christmas classic It’s a Wonderful Life. This season Red Cinema is hoping to expand its audience by having a screening in Inverkeithing. There are over 50 similar community led cinemas across Scotland, including Colinsburgh, Glenrothes and Milnathort. Teddy bears are on the march!

ollowing last year’s successful event, at the Balgove Larder, this year, the beautiful Craigtoun Park just 2 miles south west of St. Andrews is set to welcome the Teddy Bear’s Picnic on Sunday 16th September 2012. Last year the event raised £4000 for the charity Clic Sargent. This important charity helps children with cancer and leukaemia and provides support to families whose lives are changed dramatically by the diagnosis. All proceeds from the day will be donated to the charity. The day kicks off at 11am. Bring your

bears and blankets and pack a picnic for a fantastic day in the park. There will be stalls a plenty, selling food, drinks and a whole lot more so remember to bring some pocket money. The day also promises races for all ages – yes that’s mums and dads too, a fancy dress competition and a Grand Parade …of teddies! hildren from the Dalgety Bay Out of School Club are reaping the rewards from their interest in gardening. Last year Debbie Watson from Dobbies Garden Centre, Dalgety Bay regularly visited the club to talk to children about growing vegetables and flowers from seeds. Their success in producing a bumper crop of tomatoes resulted in the parents making a donation for some of their crop and the money was used to buy more seeds. The children were very enthusiastic and were thrilled when Dobbies offered them a plot in the garden centre enabling them to grow a range of vegetables and flowers. They have now successfully managed to grow lettuce, peas, onions, potatoes, strawberries and some beautiful flowers. Debbie Watson from Dobbies said “ the children are very keen and are always asking questions. They are really excited seeing the plants grow, especially when they are ready for picking.” These children are now using the fruits of their labour in their “Come Dine With Me” events they are holding throughout the Out of School Club’s summer programme. 

Nursery News Flourishing all round at Rascals The pre-school children at Rascals in Cowdenbeath have been put to work. Each was given some vegetable seeds in the spring to grow produce in the new outdoor planters and staff are delighted to report that, despite the rain and lack of sunlight, these have flourished as well as the children themselves. The youngest group in Rascals are to be found in the Snowdrop room. If your baby is six weeks old up to toddling, then the low child to staff ratio in this room may be just the reassurance you need to get back to work in the knowledge that your little one is in safe hands. Rain won’t stop play at Clever Clogs Nursery Preparations are well underway for the opening of Clever Clogs, the new nursery due to open in Kelty in late August. Clubs and Classes

Clubs and classes Take your pick! By Elisabeth Dolton

s the new school year starts, so does the time to choose after-school activities, but take a quick look and you will find a whole range of classes available, from Scouts to Ballet, from French to Karate. How can we know which ones are the best for our child, offer value for money, and critically, which ones they will enjoy? After-school activities definitely offer value to your children. Reports indicate those who participate in after-school programs have better school attendance, higher grades and loftier aspirations. They’re less likely to get into trouble and are at lower risk of obesity. It is also a great opportunity for children to develop social and leadership skills. The socialisation aspect is key too – even with really young children. Getting babies and toddlers used to being with others is really valuable and it’s at classes like these that toddlers will first learn to listen to instructions, take part and share.

How to choose a class

Talk to your child and find out how they feel about the activity, and let them choose at least one club or activity themselves. Help them choose activities that reflect who they are and what they want to learn, and try not to impose your preferences. Explain that it’s important and fun to try new things, and remember switching activities is normal amongst children.

Consider the mix of activities

activities are ideal for children to explore and practice what it means to be a group leader, e.g. Brownies. If you are stuck between two similar activities, consider the usefulness, e.g. drum lessons might be cool, but the guitar might have wider applicability.

Remember logistics

The afterschool programme affects you too. Avoid signing on to too many activities that leave you scrambling from one to the next. No one will have fun doing anything if it means arriving late, leaving early, and going without dinner on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Look hard for places you can walk to, it reduces your carbon footprint while keeping you fit for free! After-school activities can provide enrichment, adventure and variety. They can enhance knowledge and build character. Spend a bit more time choosing the right activity programme for your child and you will reap the benefits.

Rugbytots is coming to Perth!

ugbytots is a highly energetic play programme for children aged 2-7 years that has run in Scotland for four years, with classes in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Lothians, Borders, Stirling, and now Perth. Rugbytots is run by Carl McWilliam, who was formerly part of the New Zealand 7s team and played in the Scottish Premier league for Watsonians. Carl, joined by other experienced coaches, now aims to pass on his knowledge at grass roots level in a fun and educational way. Feedback from across our venues has been very positive. s a new initiative at the Maternity Unit in the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy. Mother Support Volunteers have been trained and volunteer their time to go into the hospital’s postnatal areas to spend time with the new mothers to help prepare them for going home with their new baby. The volunteers visit the hospital for six Tuesday mornings for initial training with the Infant Feeding Team who link in with the Volunteer Manager. They then have a period of supervised practice, regular updates and attend focus groups for feedback. The hours are arranged to suit both the service and the volunteer. The aim is that the service will eventually cover most shifts.

Much as flight attendants advise you to fit your own oxygen mask if needed, before fitting your child’s or someone else’s, the energy circuits that move around your body supporting your health and wellbeing, are very closely connected to your child’s. As a mother, your primary concern is your child’s wellbeing, and it is difficult at times to remember to give yourself much needed care too. During a Shiatsu session, I take time to talk about you and the baby to find out how things are going. You may be feeling generally good, but just want

to give your energies a boost and enjoy the relaxing space on your own or with your baby (possible until they are on the move around the room!) You may feel exhausted and overwhelmed, and needing support. Or there may be other factors like shoulder and back tension, residual hip or pelvic pain, emotional ups and downs, healing scars, breastfeeding problems, bonding issues, and recovering from birth trauma. Your needs might be to have more ease, feel lighter and more like yourself again, or to have more energy and connection. Parent to parent Introducing

amilies likes to interview real parents from around the region to give readers an insight into what other families do at the weekends and to possibly inject some inspiration into our dull lives, I mean free time…

This time round we interviewed Louise Lewcock who lives with husband Stephen and children Katie (6), Charlie (4), Kinvara (2) in Cults Hill, Cupar. Former event organiser, Louise has recently joined the organising committee for local charity event – the Teddy Bear’s Picnic on September 16th at Craigtoun Country Park. Louise’s nephew has recently completed a course of chemotherapy for Leukaemia which really brought home the need to support the work of charity Clic Sargent. In her own limited downtime, she’s recently taken up running which she claims is great for ‘body and soul’ and road cycling which is an opportunity to grab some time with husband Stephen, a seasoned cyclist and to enjoy their local countryside. Why do you like living where you do? Its near my family and friends, love the Fife country side and all there is to do especially for kids. Off the top of my head there is East and West Sands, Kingsbarns beach, Tentsmuir beach, Cairnie Fruit Farm, Muddy Boots, Hill of Tarvit, Craigshall Den, Ceramics, Bonkers, Fife Animal Farm and the next door Loch, Falkland Woods, woods at Auchtermuchty (can’t remember its name) Cupar Sports Centre and tennis courts, St Andrews pool, Elie beach, tennis courts and golf/putting range. The list goes on and on. Not that we do all of these things all the time but when people come to stay there is always a huge choice of things to pick from. Favourite shop: Tesco– seems to be where I spend most my time! Otherwise it would probably be a foodie shop like Luvians, Kerrachers or Ardross Farm shop. Bonkers is lovely for gifts and Waterstones for books. In fact anywhere thats not Tesco! Favourite park: Letham Park is great and the kids always beg to go to the Cupar park. Favourite children’s club/class: St Andrews University Sports Camp, held over the Easter and Summer holidays. The guys teaching are great with the kids. Musical Steps is also great, mine have all loved the toddler troupe phase. Favourite day out: Fife Show and Royal Highland Show. Kids get to see all the farm machinery and animals, good food stalls and always lots of friends to bump into plus the Learning Zone at the RHS is great. Favourite child friendly restaurant: Pizza Express in St Andrews – just love it, good food, kids colouring pack, good set up and very understanding staff, have yet to be kicked out for badly behaved children! Favourite alternative health clinic/pre or post natal class: Time Fitness in Cupar has been brilliant at easying me back into sports/fitness. Proudest eco-friendly moment:

Every time I take a bulging bag of plastic/ cans/bottles/card etc to the recycling bins. Best planet saving tip: Don’t iron (does that count?) No parent should be without: Wine Parenting pet hates: Probably fall foul of most of them at sometime or other. Oh and the organic brigade, who tell you with pride they only feed their kids organic food which thereby makes them more concerned parents. As if it’s the organic food that makes all the difference. A healthy diet and exercise is just as good and more economical! Favourite family holiday spot: France becuase its always been sunny, we go with great friends and the kids all love the pool. Best children’s book: There are lots but Barry the Fish with fingers is quite funny. Best children DVD or video: Monsters Inc and How to Train a Dragon – my son and I have watched these so many times. Most played with toys: The trampoline and a massive box of plastic fruit and veg which we inherited and came with a note of apology. I now understand why as we find random things like plastic garlic bulbs or a bundle of asparagus in the most unlikely places but the kids love it. Biggest waste of money: A nappy disposal bin with special bags. Most successful recipe/food: Annabel Karmel was good for the really baby phase but now I tend to feed the kids anything and they either eat or don’t but I dont sweat it. They always eat when they’re hungry and frequently turn their nose up at something they loved the week before. Any other comment: Mainly due to their granny and Pop Pop’s influence the kids love doing jigsaws and are now learning card games such as Go Fish, Clock Patience and Old Maid, which is lots of fun and great for rainy days. 

Dad is Jagadeesh Hiremath who is better know to friends, (and now us), as Jaggi. Jaggi has 12 years of experience in the "Information Technology" industry and currently works as an I.T. Consultant. Jaggi has scrupulously researched child safe programs for his young daughter and is delighted to share his research with fellow cautious parents. Kids, Computer & Internet Since 2009, my wife and I have become very cautious about using computer and internet. Why? Because it was in this year our daughter was born. Now, what is the connection between my daughter, computer and internet? Yes there is a connection. My wife and I both listen to music, watch news, movies, read articles and more via internet. First, few months after her birth it all went well. But when our daughter was about four or five months, we noticed her turning towards new sounds, voices and imitating. It is amazing, how quickly they grow. We see them rolling over, sitting, crawling and walking. In the first three years, a baby’s brain develops at a phenomenal rate as they make sense of the world around them. Now, my daughter is three years old. The computer is nearly inseparable from her these days. School aged and pre-school children spend hours in front of computers. It is worth parents considering what effects computers can have on our children. One thing you'll notice is how computer-literate and visually savvy today's children are. But the good news is a research suggests that pre-schoolers who use computers improve their readiness for school and academic achievements.
