Schools to get no-notice of Oftsed inspections Ofsted chief, Sir Michael Wilshaw, has announced that from Autumn 2012, schools will face inspections without being given notice. Sir Michael said it was a “logical” progression and vital for public confidence in inspections and that inspectors see schools “as they really are in the corridors, classrooms and staffroom”. This change comes after new worries that some schools were using tactics such as sending less successful teachers and unruly pupils home when inspectors were visiting. The “great majority of schools conduct themselves properly”, Sir Michael said, but added that if there is any thought that a school is not, Ofsted must address it.

Addressing the Childhood Obesity Crisis in East London New NHS national statistics show that nearly a quarter of children in reception classes are overweight or obese increasing to over 35% by year 6 with the situation even worse in most East London boroughs. The survey of over a million pupils in England has prompted calls for the Government to tackle what experts are calling a “childhood obesity crisis”. Whilst childhood obesity is a serious problem, the problem goes far beyond childhood obesity and its associated poor health outcomes. Sally Goddard Blythe, Director of the Institute for Neuro-Physiological Psychology in Chester, has identified that up to half of 5 years olds were not ready for school due to their “sedentary lifestyles”. Many preschool children finding it difficult to grip pencils properly, sit still, stand up straight or even catch a ball after failing to develop key
physical skills. Exercise such as Yoga can help maintain a child’s natural flexibility and develop stamina. It can improve concentration, energy levels, promote healthy sleeping patterns, improve posture by strengthening and toning the body and reduce the risk of childhood obesity. Olympic Village takes shape The Olympic Village site has been handed over on time to the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games who have start the huge process to fit-out the new apartments and Village site. Four times Olympic gold medallist Matthew Pinsent was on-hand to help lift in the first of more than 16,000 beds to be installed in the Village. After the Games, the 2,818 new homes and community will be known as East Village with 1,379 to provide high-quality affordable housing and the remaining 1,439 properties will become private housing with six adjacent development plots giving the potential for 2,000 more homes. Work started on the Village in June 2008 and it also contains a world-class education campus – the Chobham Academy – with places for 1,800 students and a state-of-the-art Polyclinic with a full range of health facilities.

Make your Party Perfect Did someone say party? Yes, I’m afraid so and one thing’s for sure your child will have a birthday in the next year. So it’s Families East to the rescue as we’ve put on our party hats to ensure your ‘do’ is the one they’ll talk about, until next year... Before you start Bear in mind the needs, interests and numbers of your party age group. Don’t feel the party has to last all afternoon - two hours is enough, before everyone gets tired and emotional (not least you).
Party Guide by Age Group: 1 – 2 year-olds aren’t ready for a busy affair so most parents opt for a family get-together or some food with a few friends with similar aged children. Enjoy it while you can - it’s a doddle to organise and sociable for the adults. 3 year-olds need planned activities so capture their imagination with simple ‘circle time’ singing and clapping games, or ‘dancing’ to music. The ideal size group for this age is 8 - 12 children in a venue where they feel familiar - usually your home (sorry about that!) 4 – 6 year-olds enjoy joining in with traditional party games, like Simon Says, Musical Bumps, Pass the Parcel, What’s the Time Mr Wolf, and Musical Lions. Allow space and time for some unstructured play (you’ll be glad you blew up all those balloons). Plenty of engaging games and giggles will keep things moving especially if you hire entertainment like magicians, clowns, puppeteers, music-makers or storytellers. A maximum of 20 guests is about right. 7 – 9 year-olds are old enough and skilled enough for arts and crafts of some kind. Alternatively, dancing, circus skills, drama or a team treasure hunt are good ways of harnessing energy.
Ages 10+ are looking for something special like laser tag, karting, a mini disco, or a Glee-type drama and singing workshop or why not a jaw-dropping magic show, especially if the kids can ‘help’.
PLAN YOUR PARTY Crowd control: entertainers
Whether face painting, creative fun, drama, music or magic, a good entertainer brings a party to life keeping children enthralled while you enjoy from a safe distance and are well worth the investment. TIP: Make use of the entertainer’s experience and contacts so ask about venues, timings and prizes. Find out their preferred age group, and maximum number of children, as you want the best out of them. Don’t forget to write down what you’ve agreed for the day.
Take them out: venues
Do you really have the energy and creativity to decorate your house and then clean it up four hours later? Happily, there are plenty of places where you pay “per head” to entertain and feed guests leaving your home tidy. Try child-friendly restaurants, a pottery-painting studio, bowling alleys, indoor play centres, sports clubs, or cinema as venues. TIP: Book well ahead - you don’t want to be scratching around at the last minute and end up with ‘second best’.
Themed parties
Perfect when your child has a particular interest whether drama, musical, circus or sports party; or get creative making bags, jewellery, or cooking. TIP: Use the theme throughout the party - print off related pictures from the web as wall decorations.
INSIDER TIPS It’s all in the timing for little children hold parties between 11am-1pm or 12-2pm as they’ll be tired by the afternoon. For older children a mid-afternoon start works fine. Talk with parents whose children have birthdays at the same time. Booking a joint party may share the cost and hassle. Keep the food simple, limit the junk food and don’t over cater as most children are too excited to eat. Remember some children maybe vegetarian or have food intolerances. focus on ... Lea Bridge Road In this issue we take the opportunity to discover more about some of the fantastic locations to visit in our area. Families East focuses on a small area within the 26 mile-long Lee Valley Regional Park, running adjacent to Lea Bridge Road . It offers an amazing selection of activities and fun for all the family which includes fantastic wildlife, pathways ideal for cycling, walking and running, open spaces and two sports centres. The WaterWorks Nature Reserve houses one of the largest bird hides in London and attracts a variety of birds, reptiles, mammals and insects. Over 500 species of plants, many breeding birds and a wide variety of British butterflies make this a unique wildlife haven. Next to this is the Golf Centre, a par 3, 18 hole golf course, perfect for improving your short game along with its driving range, café and golf shop. The Waterworks Nature Reserve
At Lee Valley Riding Centre, you can come along to a ‘have a go’ taster lesson or a ‘learn to ride’ course in its indoor or two floodlit outdoor arenas. There are group lessons for beginners, 30min sessions for children aged 5 – 15 that are held after school or weekend afternoons, and hour-long sessions for adults (weekends only). Dressage, show jumping and cross-country jumping courses are available along with riding lessons for adults and children with disabilities - call to check times, availability or to book!
Tucked behind the Ice Centre is Walthamstow Marsh Nature Reserve, home to rare plants, birds and other wildlife. Come and enjoy for a walk along the River Lee or meet the cattle that graze on the marshes from July onwards. Finally, there’s Middlesex Filter Beds Nature Reserve a 10-acre oasis of open water, reed beds and mature woodland with more than 200 plant species and home to many birds and amphibians including toads, frogs and newts. Lee Valley Ice Centre was opened in 1984 by Torvill and Dean and is the regional centre for ice sports. You can learn to skate, play ice hockey, have a birthday party, see fantastic shows or just have fun there. Its 56m by 26m ice pad makes it a major international venue for skating events and is the London practice venue for celebrities performing in ITV’s Dancing on Ice.
