Hello! This issue it’s all about partying. We’ve been hit by Jubilee fever and are stocking up on the red, white and blue in readiness for the celebrations. Ben and Lily are showing off by announcing newly learnt facts about the Queen and getting crafty designing crowns and bunting. And apparently the dogs, cats and hamsters will also be in need of decoration. Oh dear. But while the Jubilee is a national party, we’ve not forgotten how important that birthday celebration is for your child – so this issue includes our party feature with some fabulous ideas on how to create your own birthday traditions, as well as a list of local suppliers of creative party services and venues. And in readiness for the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, we’re also looking at ways to get healthy and active. The Olympic Torch will be travelling across Cheshire at the end of May, so we’ll be out there to cheer on the athletes and get into the spirit of it all. See you enroute!

Macclesfield Barnaby Festival takes to the streets again this year, from Thursday 21 to Sunday 24 June 2012. This centuries old Maxonian tradition of feast days and holidays has been reinvented as a festival of arts and culture that celebrates the town, its heritage and the creative and industrious people who inhabit it. This year there are over a hundred shows, exhibitions and outdoor events, many of them free.

Paul Bowyer, a Sandbach School teacher who lives in Knutsford will swap textbooks for trainers this summer in an ambitious attempt to cover a distance of over 100 miles - the equivalent of five marathons - in five days. He will start his run in Liverpool on Sunday 22 July and arrive four days and 100 miles later in Birmingham on Thursday 26 July. The tough challenge is an attempt to raise money for Ronald McDonald House Charities, which provides free ‘home
away from home’ accommodation to families with seriously ill children in hospital. Paul’s brother and sister-in-law stayed at Ronald McDonald House Alder Hey when their son, Charlie, was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes in 2008 and at the Ronald McDonald House next to Birmingham Children’s Hospital when their three year-old daughter Georgia was diagnosed with Leukaemia in July last year. Friends and family will support Paul on his route at different stages by either running or cycling alongside him. His father, David will be joining Paul for the entire distance. Paul hopes to raise £5,500 for three different charities including Ronald McDonald House Charities and has set up a website where you can find out more information about his run and how to donate: www.5in5withpaul.co.uk.

The Sky’s the Limit Manchester Day Parade, Sunday 10 June

Education news New checks for children
Following on from a pilot scheme last year, new phonics tests are to be introduced to all Year 1 pupils this summer. The Year 1 phonics screening check is a short assessment to confirm whether children have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate standard, and will apply to all Year 1 pupils in maintained schools, academies and Free Schools. The test will take place between 18 and 22 June 2012, with the aim of identifying children who need extra help and who can then be given support by their school to improve their reading skills. According to the Department of Education, the check will comprise a list of 40 words and non-words or nonsense
words, which a child will read one-to-one with a teacher. Half of the words cover phonics skills that tend to be learnt in Reception, while the other half are based on Year 1 phonics skills. Word from the DfE is that the tests will not be daunting, but are merely there to check that children at the end of Year 1 have the foundations they need to learn to read, such as skills for blending sounds into words and the phonic knowledge of recognising the sounds for basic letters and letter combinations. Parents invited to ‘Ask the Expert’ ahead of the first Year 1 phonics screening check With studies showing that parental involvement has the biggest impact on a child’s educational achievements, many parents will be looking for ways to help their child prepare for the upcoming phonics check. To support these parents, Oxford University Press (OUP) is launching ‘Ask the Expert’; a week-long live online Q&A session with independent phonics expert, Laura Sharp, who has been working with OUP since Autumn last year on the development of ‘My Phonics Kit’. Laura will be online between 7pm and 10pm from Monday 21 to Friday 25 May to offer tips and advice on how parents can support their children with learning phonics. Parents are invited to ‘Ask the
Expert’ by posting questions to and following the conversation on the Facebook group where the Q&A will be held (www.facebook.com/oxfordowl). In the meantime, parents can also visit www.oxfordowl.co.uk for more phonics resources and advice – such as videos from Children’s Laureate Julia Donaldson, and a range of interactive free eBooks. ‘My Phonics Kit’ is an activity pack for parents to use with their Year 1 child, which features familiar characters Biff, Chip and Kipper from the Oxford Reading Tree scheme used in 80% of primary schools. It combines phonics decoding practice with engaging stories and interactive features – making learning to read a fun and exciting journey.
My Phonics Kit RRP £9.99 Oxford University Press My daughter Lily is in Year One and will face the phonics screening check for 6 year olds this Summer, so we tested out the My Phonics Kit in preparation. Lily really enjoyed this pack of workbooks as they feature the ever popular characters Biff, Chip & Kipper. The books asked Lily to read words as quickly as possible to check her ability to blend sounds; read sentences and match them to pictures to check her understanding of the text; do 'word jigsaws' to complete broken down words; circle sounds within words; complete wordsearches and more. Lily found the books fun to go through as
exercises were fairly short and varied, and a lot felt more like games than learning so it wasn't a chore. As a parent I found the books useful as it helped me see how Lily was grasping what she had been through in school and boosted my confidence in her ability. Definitely a useful tool whether you simply want to check understanding with some fun tasks or you feel your child may be struggling and you want to do some additional exercises one-to-one at home. Education news New Owners at Scamps raise the bar in nursery and pre-school education When Deborah Baines and John Sutton struggled to find a nursery that offered the best level of pre-school education they decided to do something about it and bought Scamps Day Nursery in Macclesfield last October. Deborah, a primary school teacher with over fifteen years’ experience, is a specialist in early years development in
both literacy and numeracy and has seen first-hand how the quality of pre-school education can define a pupil’s progress in primary school and beyond. She uses a range of specialist skills including ‘Numbers Count’ and ‘Letters and Sounds’ in addition to a range of lessons and activities that teach children early reading and writing skills. The Numbers Count programme
was originally designed as an intervention to aid young children struggling with numeracy by breaking down early maths concepts into small and understandable steps and slowly reinforcing and building upon these concepts. The results the programme delivers are amazing, with pupils on average making seventeen months’ progress in just ten weeks. Deborah realised that this approach lends itself perfectly to children beginning numeracy in pre-school and helping them to clearly understand these numeracy
concepts. At Scamps, the focus is to ensure that all of the children receive the highest levels of literacy and numeracy development, with one strict condition. It not only has to prepare the children to get off to the best possible start in life but just as importantly at this age range it has to be FUN!! Ways to make sure birthdays remain special for special children Since traditions are often visual and repeated, most children with special needs will really appreciate and learn to love these birthday traditions. To help ensure their special day, here are a few extra watchouts... Watch what they eat: It’s easy to let slip strict dietary requirements during a day of celebration. For children with allergies and even vegetarian, let your party host know in advance and make appropriate plans. Avoid overload: Don’t overwhelm with too many guests, lights, games, candles, music and presents. Decorate simply, put on a relaxing CD, and provide a quiet place where the child can go if s/he wants to. Prepare them: Let your special needs child know in advance what to expect. Explain the plan of the day. Let them sit where they are comfortable and if out; provide them with an exit strategy. Give your child a signal they can use with you if they need to leave a place or situation. Keep the day low key: Treat the birthday as just another day, an important day, but not one that’s too busy. Launched in July 2011, Sustrans Free Range Kids campaign aims to create environments for independent, active children, with a focus on 20mph speed limits and safe walking routes. Supported by Miranda Krestovnikoff, presenter of BBC’s Coast and mother of two young children herself, the campaign hopes to change the way we view childhood, and allow our children more freedom to grow.
Here are some tips from Sustrans on raising Free Range Kids: • Reclaim the streets: Research shows 90% of today’s parents played outside as kids, but one in three children in the current generation of seven to 15 year olds have never played outside at all. Playing outside helps teach children road safety skills, and bolsters their confidence and social skills. Start slowly – do a bit of gardening while
your kids scooter on the pavement outside. When you feel confident, suggest they invite friends to play in the street – you could do a bit of housework and leave the front door open so you can hear what they are up to. If your street is far too busy, then take a picnic to a local park on a dry day and let your kids explore while you man ‘base camp’. • Why not plan a family cycle ride at the weekend? Try the National Cycle Network Route 74 (Wrenbury to Sandbach) – a 15 mile ride that takes you through Nantwich, Crewe, Haslington and Wheelock, with plenty of suitable coffee shops, shops and pubs for refreshments en route. • Learn outside: Encourage your kid’s school to adopt an ‘outdoor classroom’. Whether it’s the school field or the middle of town, outdoor learning has plenty of benefits. Start small – it’s sowing season, so perhaps your children could grow Sunflowers, monitoring the weather and measuring them weekly. Or for older children, why not head into town for a look at the

Cycling with kids By Karen Wood
One of the best ways to enjoy cycling is in a group, and there’s no better group than your own family! Children as young as 2yrs old are now able to cycle using balance bikes, so there really is no excuse for the whole family not to join in. We are all aware of the problems of obesity and with a shocking 10% of children in the UK now clinically obese (British Medical Association), cycling is a great way to spend quality family time together, get fitter and – after the initial equipment has been bought – it’s a cheap, fun activity.
Choosing equipment Bikes need to complement your lifestyle so, before you buy, think about where you want to use them. Depending on the ages of your children and your levels of fitness, you may need racers or mountain bikes for sporty action, hybrids for a mixture of road and trail riding, plus smaller models and balance bikes for the children. Whilst you tend to get what you pay for, the most
important part is the right size frame. If you also intend to use your bike to commute, find out if your employer runs a cycle-towork scheme – you could save up to 40%. Once the bikes are chosen, remember to take a spare inner tube and a puncture kit to keep them moving, plus a good quality helmet and a drink. It’s also worth investing in a bike lock so you can pop in for tea and cake en route!
Stay safe According to a recent Sustrans survey, more than half of us believe the roads are too unsafe to cycle on, but The National Cycle Network provides safe and attractive routes perfect for family bike rides. Lead from the front If you want your kids to be fired up about cycling then you need to lead by example. Women who thought their bike days were over are being welcomed at rides designed just for women – check out Breeze (www.goskyride.com/breeze) and Cycletta (www.cycletta.co.uk).
They offer a chance to get back on your bike in great company. Children also make wonderful cycling companions – they’re adaptable, energetic and want to have fun. Just follow our simple guide to ensure that it’s an enjoyable experience!
Before the Ride Do your homework: Make certain you are familiar with the bike route. If you get lost or the route is longer than expected, your child may suffer not only from a diminished experience, but potentially in more serious ways such as dehydration or exposure – older children will enjoy the planning too and might even learn some geography if you look at a map together. Start early: Children tend to tire quickly in the afternoon. Take advantage of their energy in the morning and start your ride early. Invite playmates: Cycling is more fun when shared. If your child has a friend who is at the same level of competency on a bike, bring him or her along. Slow down: Realize that a 4-mile ride may take 2 hours. Don't expect to ride as fast as you would on your own. Be aware of traffic: What might seem like light traffic to you could be a more dangerous situation for your child, whether biking separately or in a trailer. Be prepared: Carry a tool kit and know how to use it. Also, carry a first-aid kit that includes a few bandages and antibiotic cream to handle minor cases of road rash. Dress right: Bring a daypack to hold extra jackets in case the weather changes. Also, try to wear bright clothing or reflective sashes, to aid your visibility.
On the Ride Take breaks: Plan on taking a lot of short breaks. Allow time to stop, get off the bike and explore. Drink water: Always have water readily available. Try to drink before feeling thirsty to stay hydrated. Eat snacks: A well-timed snack can defuse a squabble or bad mood and keep energy going. Kids tend to misbehave more when they're tired, hungry or thirsty. Make it fun: Choose an interesting route that goes by gardens, streams, views, farms or a favourite shop. Most children are interested in what they can see along the route rather than what's at the end of the road or trail. Express enthusiasm: If you convey a genuinely upbeat attitude, children most often will be inclined to mimic it.

On 18 May 2012, the Olympic Torch Relay will start with a 70-day celebration that will travel thousands of miles to bring the London 2012 Games to hundreds of communities across the UK. The Olympic Flame will be lit on 10 May in Olympia, Greece and will embark on an 8 day relay around Greece before arriving at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens for the official Olympic Flame handover ceremony. Lighting the cauldron in the Olympic Stadium signifies the beginning of the games and the flame will stay lit until the closing ceremony on 12 August. The Olympic Flame is one of the most recognized symbols of any Olympic Games. A ritual for the lighting of the Flame is followed at every Games. It is lit from the sun’s rays at the Temple of Hera in Olympia, in a traditional ceremony among the ruins of the home of the Ancient Games. The Flame is then handed over to the new host city and is then transferred from one torchbearer to another, spreading the message of peace, unity and friendship. It’s not just sporting superstars who’ll carry the Olympic Flame this summer. People from all walks of life and from every part of the UK will take part. In all,
8,000 torchbearers will get the chance of a lifetime to carry the flame and over half of the torchbearers will be young people aged 12 - 25. When will the torch come through Cheshire? For the first time in Olympic history, Britain will be the first country to hold a torch relay completely within the UK. The Olympic Torch Relay will be a fantastic spectacular, a chance to celebrate your community and showcase it to the world – so don’t miss out! The Torch will be traveling through Chester on Tuesday 29 and Wednesday 30 May (evening celebration on 29 May), and through Crewe, Congleton, Macclesfield and Knutsford on Thursday 31 May. Best foot forward Reducing child Is your family up for the great British accidents Walking Challenge? The national charity Living Streets is urging all of us to mark May by leaving our cars at home and walking to and from school, work and the shops. According to recent research, only one in ten commuters walks to work, and a quarter of us admit we rarely walk for as much as 20 minutes at a time. But walking is one of the most effective forms of exercise - it's also one of the simplest to do, and one of the cheapest. Tony Armstrong of Living Streets says the secret to being successful is to make walking part of your ordinary life - so choose a journey you'd be making anyway, and work out how you can walk all or some of it. After cancer, accidents are the biggest single killer of UK children - and even children who survive serious accidents are often left with injuries that take months or years to heal. What’s more, the psychological damage caused to children and to their parents as the result of an accident can last a lifetime. This year's Child Safety Week, June 18-24, aims to raise awareness of accident prevention amongst parents and those who work with children - reminding them, for example, to make sure that hot drinks are placed out of a child's reach and that bathroom cleaning products are locked away. Did you know? The official emblem of the Diamond Jubilee was designed by 10 year old Katherine Dewar from Chester. A national competition, supported by Buckingham Palace and promoted through the BBC’s Blue Peter Programme, attracted over 35,000 entries from school children aged between 6 and 14.

1. The Queen was born Princess Elizabeth of York on 21 April 1926 in Mayfair, London. 2. On 6 February 1952 while in Kenya, Princess Elizabeth received the news of her father’s death and her own accession to the throne. The tour was abandoned and Princess Elizabeth flew back to Britain as Queen and moved into Buckingham Palace.
3. The Coronation took place in Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953. The ceremony was broadcast on radio around the world and was televised for the very first time. 4. The Queen is the second longestserving monarch. Only five other kings and queens in British history have reigned for 50 years or more: Victoria (63 years); George III (59 years); Henry III (56 years); Edward III (50 years); and James VI of Scotland (James I of England) (57 years). 5. Since her first official overseas visit to South Africa in 1947, overseas visits have become one of The Queen’s most important duties; and in 60 years, she has undertaken 261 official overseas visits to 116 different countries. Her Majesty has visited Australia 16 times, Canada 22 times, Jamaica six times and New Zealand 10 times. 6. The Queen has been to countries which no other British monarch has ever visited, including the first State visits by a reigning monarch to China in 1986, Russia in 1994, Brunei and
Malaysia in 1998, and Korea in 1999. 7. The first Royal walkabout took place in 1970 during a visit to Australia and New Zealand by The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh, who wanted to meet as many people as possible, not just officials and dignitaries. 8. The Queen has made a Christmas Broadcast to the Commonwealth every year of her reign except 1969 – making her 50th Christmas Broadcast in 2002; in 2004 The Queen issued her first separate broadcast for members of the British Armed Forces; and in 2006 it was available for the first time as a podcast. 9. The Queen has owned more than 30 corgis during her reign – starting with Susan who was a present for her 18th birthday – and currently has three, Monty, Willow and Holly. 10.Queen Victoria was the last and only British monarch to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee, when she was 78 in 1897. The Queen, who was aged 85 on Accession Day in 2012, will be the oldest monarch to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee.
Jubilee face painting step by step Get in the spirit of things by painting your children’s faces. Just grab some red, white and blue face paints and follow the steps below (we used Snazaroo Union Jack Face Painting Kit, £4.99, www.snazaroo.com).
Union Jack face art 1. Using a damp sponge and white face paint, sketch out the white areas – no need to be exactly accurate as you can paint the other colours over it once it’s dry. 2. With royal blue paint and a brush, draw the outlines of the triangular areas and fill in using the sponge or the brush. 3. Using bright red paint and a brush, fill in the central cross and then carefully paint the fine diagonal lines.

After being away from the group for five years due to illness, Greg is returning to the role he knows best. Libraries across the UK are getting ready to introduce children to an imagination paradise that will keep them reading throughout the school summer holidays .... with Story Lab, the 2012 Summer Reading Challenge™ run by The Reading Agency, an independent charity. Each year the Summer Reading Challenge to children is simple. They’re encouraged to read six, or more books of their choice during the holidays with collectable incentives and rewards, plus a certificate, or medal for every child who completes the Challenge. Children can sign up at their local library from the end of June onwards and all materials are absolutely free.
This year’s theme - Story Lab features four characters Lex, Rani, Will and Evie. Along with Aesop, the ginger lab cat, they will be helping Professor Cortex collect and share stories to inspire thousands of young imaginations. An interactive Story Lab website (www.story-lab.org.uk) will launch in June, enabling children to talk about their favourite books and reading experiences with top authors and illustrators. Plans are well under way for making the 2012 Summer Reading Challenge the biggest and best ever. Throughout the regions libraries will be linking the Challenge in with events in arts venues and museums, giving it a link to the 2012 Olympics, as it is an official project in the Cultural Olympiad’s London 2012 Festival.
