Researchers at the Birkbeck Babylab expand studies to include school age children!
At the Birkbeck Babylab, they don’t just study babies! Their team of friendly researchers create fun and interesting studies to learn how brains in babies, toddlers and children develop. They use cutting edge technology and a variety of methods to achieve this. Their studies appeal to both babies and children through play, games and computer animations. Lisanne and Aude, two of their wonderful PhD students, are currently studying 2 - 6 year olds. Lisanne uses motion capture cameras and Duplo toy blocks to learn how the ability to remember instructions and create things in the correct order to achieve a goal develops throughout childhood. The technical psychology term for this is action sequencing and is essential to daily life. For example, learning how to get dressed independently requires remembering the order of underwear before trousers and socks before shoes! Aude is also interested in action sequencing and uses a game on a touch screen computer where children build recipes for their favourite cartoon characters. The way the children plan, hesitate or change their minds while playing will provide insight into how action sequences develop and improve throughout childhood. They are currently recruiting children from birth to school age to take part in our research in the heart of Central London. Participants will be compensated for travel expenses. News & Views Perform is celebrating its 20th anniversary! Families chatted to founder, Lucy Quick...
How did Perform start? I was a musical theatre actress in Oliver! at the London Palladium and I loved working with children. I had a vision for a drama school that wasn’t about talent or auditions; where performing arts would be used to develop what we now call the 4 Cs: confidence, communication, coordination and concentration. Where is Perform at now? Starting with two classes in 2000, we now run 472 schools across the South East and West, employ over 250 teachers and have almost 8000 children attending weekly. What’s the secret of Perform’s success? We put child development at the heart of everything we do. What does the future hold? Opening more Perform schools across the country - we’re just launching in Nottingham - and continuing our confidence crusade to help children fulfil their potential through drama, dance and singing. What are you proudest of? My teachers. They are the most inspirational bunch of talented and enthusiastic people you’ll ever meet. Try a FREE no-obligation drama class in Acton, Brook Green, Chiswick, Ealing, Hammersmith, Kensington, Maida Vale, Marylebone, Notting Hill and White City. Why THINKING should be a Curriculum subject
By Dr Neel Burton
Following his defeat at the Battle of Actium in 31 BCE, Marc Antony heard a rumour that Cleopatra had committed suicide and, in consequence, stabbed himself in the abdomen - only to discover that Cleopatra herself had been responsible for spreading the rumour. He later died in her arms.
‘Fake news’ is nothing new, but in our Internet age, it has spread like a disease, swinging elections, fomenting social unrest, undermining institutions, and diverting political capital away from health, education, and good government. So how best to guard against it?
As a medical specialist, I have spent well over twenty years in formal education. With the possible exception of my one-year degree in philosophy, the emphasis of my education has been firmly and squarely on fact accumulation.
Today, I have little use for most of these facts, and though I am only middle-aged, many are already out of date, or highly questionable. But what I do rely on - every day, all the time - is my faculty for critical thinking. As BF Skinner once put it: “Education is what survives when what has been learnt has been forgotten.”
But can critical thinking be taught? The answer is ‘yes’ - or, at least, the beginnings of it. So why not make more time for it and be more rigorous and systematic about its learning?
6 Families west London
Logic is a good start, but there is much more to critical thinking than mere logic. Educationalists often amalgamate thinking with logic. True, logic is able to provide immediate certainty and the authority and credibility that goes with that. But logic is a lot more limited than many people imagine.
Logic essentially consists of a set of operations for deriving a statement from other statements. In a sense, it merely makes explicit that which was previously implicit. It brings nothing new to the table. The conclusion flows from the premises as their inevitable consequence: 1. All birds have feathers. (Premise 1) 2. Woodpeckers are birds. (Premise 2) 3. Therefore, woodpeckers have feathers. (Conclusion)
What’s more, logic is not concerned with the actual truth or falsity of the premises or, indeed, the merit or relevance of the conclusion. Reasoning, in contrast, is a much broader psychological activity which
also involves selecting and assessing evidence, creating and testing hypotheses, weighing competing arguments, evaluating means and ends, developing and applying mental shortcuts, and so on. All this requires the use of judgement, which is why reason, unlike logic, cannot be delegated to a computer, and also why it so often fails to persuade.
Just as there is more to reason than logic, so there is more to thinking than reasoning. If school curricula make very little time for logic and reasoning, they make even less time for non-rational forms of cognition such as the emotions, intuition, and imagination. To see the significance of nonrational forms of cognition, let’s hone in on the emotions. With the decline of religion and traditional social structures, our emotions have come to assume an increasingly dominant role in our lives. It has forever been said that we are ruled by our emotions, but this today is truer than ever. Much more than
January-February 2020
reason or tradition, it is our emotions that determine our choice of profession, partner, and politics, and our relation to money, sex, and religion.
Yet, remarkably, the emotions are utterly neglected by our system of education, leading to millions of mis-lived lives. Nothing can make us feel more alive, or more human, than our emotions, or hurt us more. To control our emotions is to control ourselves, and to control ourselves is to control our destiny. Our school curriculum needs to make more time and space for thinking. And we need to rehabilitate alternative forms of cognition, such as the emotions, intuition, and imagination, that can support, supplement, or supplant reason and return us to wholeness. Mindful Parenting: How to respond rather than react
Parenting can be a minefield. For most people, the joy of bringing up a child is tinged with frustration and disappointment when things go wrong. Losing the ability to think straight in the middle of a toddler tantrum or when your school age child refuses to eat the meal you’ve cooked is an all-too-familiar occurrence.
By Mandy Garner
So is it possible to approach parenting more mindfully and if so, what difference could it make? Here are my tips for practicing mindfulness in turbulent times.
What is Mindful Parenting? At its core, mindful parenting takes the principles of mindfulness and applies them to how you parent. The concept of mindfulness is about purposefully, curiously and openly paying attention to moments of everyday life. It involves dropping into your present moment experience and being aware of what you’re doing, while you’re doing it, with a non-judgemental attitude. It sounds easy, but increasingly it’s hard to find time to pause and take stock - especially as a parent.
So how do you practise Mindfulness? One way to learn mindfulness is through meditation, by using a point of focus, such as the passage of the breath. When your mind gets distracted and wanders off into thinking, worrying, or planning, simply notice where it has wandered to and gently guide it back to following the physical sensation of the inbreath and the out-breath. Do this every time the mind wanders - with kindness to yourself. In time, you start to recognise that thoughts will come and go of their own accord, if you allow them to do so.
Another way is to use ‘daily mindfulness practices’ - times during the day where you pause, breathe and bring moment-to-moment awareness to something simple like the brewing of your tea. By pausing and staying present in the moment, you might notice the aroma of your drink, as you take in your experience fully. So often, the uniqueness of the moment is lost as the focus shifts to getting through the day.
8 Families west London
What difference does it make? Mindful parenting invites you to think about how to become more responsive and thoughtful in the way you parent. It encourages you to pause, and experience the ‘here and now,’ rather than hankering after how you would like life to be. It’s about witnessing the essence of the moment, just as it is, so you don’t miss out on what’s going on, right now. So how does mindful parenting look and feel in practice? • It encourages you to engage, actively listen and talk things through with your child, no matter how difficult the situation. It encourages open communication as an alternative to emotionally charged reactions. • When you feel better able to cope, you’re more able to care for and feel affectionate towards your children, which in turn improves the
wellbeing of you all. • Mindfulness grows your selfawareness so you become more alert to negative emotions arising. You can then pause before you respond, rather than move straight into anger or frustration mode. • It helps you to move on more quickly from your own disappointment at your handling of a situation. It helps you be non-judgemental and let go of negative feelings before they drag you into further conflict or despair. • Mindfulness helps you to repair difficult situations more quickly as you become more willing and able to accept the challenges you face rather than resisting or denying them. • Mindful parenting puts compassion for yourself and your child at the centre. Compassion helps you to be more forgiving of yourself and more aware of your child’s needs.
January-February 2020
• A parent’s ability to be present
‘no matter what’ is capable of revolutionising how you deal with and emerge from conflict. • Focusing on your present moment experience, without judging your parenting skills or worrying about the future boosts wellbeing for you and your child. So the next time you’re feeling overwrought or overwhelmed, see if you can consciously take a moment to pause and breathe to create the space you need to decide how to respond - rather than knee jerk react. Gillian Higgins is the author of Mindfulness at Work and Home, published in September 2019 by RedDoor Press and available from www.practicalmeditation.co.uk Amazon and all good book stores.

Practical strategies for supporting an anxious child
We often hear that today’s children are more anxious than previous generations. Growing up in an environment with worrying news items about climate change or terrorism, an endless stream of exams and the digital nightmare of social media competitiveness all contribute to this heightened sense of anxiety. No wonder then that many of today’s parents are finding it a struggle to deal with their children’s anxieties.
By Alicia Eaton
But there ARE simple things parents can do to help. Here are some simple strategies which you can incorporate into daily life to soothe anxiety and help your children feel calmer and more at ease.
Practise Breathing Techniques Anxiety can lead to a shortness of breath which in turn creates a pale complexion, sweaty hands and face, tightness in the chest and even giddiness or fainting. “Take a nice deep breath” is a traditional phrase that we’re all familiar with, but taking a deep inward breath is precisely what an anxious person doesn’t need to do. Anxious feelings can be caused by having too much air trapped in the lungs, which gives the sensation of not being able to breathe properly.
Toys and games can help children practice controlling their breathing and here are some useful ways to introduce this concept: a hand-held windmill toy with sails; blowing bubbles through a wand blowing up balloons; blowing bubbles in a drink through a straw; playing blow football; blowing a feather from one side of a table to the other; blowing up an imaginary paper bag through a scrunched-up hand.
Not only will your child feel calmer after playing these games, but they’ll get a feel for how to control their breathing more effectively when they are feeling anxious.
Create a Worry Box If you have a child that’s stuck in a cycle of worrying about future events and repeatedly asking “yes, but what if...,” it will be more helpful to restrict the amount of time given
10 Families west London
over to discussion about these worries.
Find a box. It can be an old shoebox, or a small, attractively decorated one so long as it has a lid and can be closed easily. Explain to your child that this is going to be their personal Worry Box. Put a supply of paper and felt-tips inside the box. Each time your child gets stuck in a cycle of worries, ask them to take a sheet of paper from the Worry Box and choose a coloured pen. Having a good selection of coloured pens is useful because you can ask your child what colour they think this particular worry is.
Ask them to write down or draw a picture of the worry. Once they’ve finished, fold the piece of paper and put it into the Worry
Box. Put the lid firmly on the box and put it away.
Once a week, sit down with your child and take out all the pieces of paper in the box and read through the worries one by one. Encourage your child to be pleasantly surprised at just how many worries took care of themselves. Remember: most of the things we worry about never happen!
Encourage an attitude of positivity Negative thinking can easily become a habit that’s hard to break. Switching your child’s thought patterns around will help to prevent this from happening.
Encourage your child to keep a journal. This can be a physical notebook to record events or doodle in, or they can use any devices they
January-February 2020
may have for the same purpose.
Each day, ask your child to write down three positive things that happened. These can be quite simple to begin with: we had pizza for lunch or the maths teacher forgot to set homework.
If it’s easier, you can introduce this technique conversationally, either in the car or at the dinner table. Start the ball rolling by mentioning something good that happened to you that day. Too many of us fall into the trap of only talking about the problems and difficulties that we encountered during our day. Why I want to be in the good enough parenting club! The pressure to be a perfect parent can be overwhelming; particularly when we are bombarded by picture-perfect family lives on social media, writes Claire Winter.
Mums who are juggling work and family life effortlessly and also find the time to bake cakes and look fabulous. Celebrities who seem to flit from the school run to photo-shoots and still have time to take their kids to Judo. We don’t see the nanny, the makeup artist and the housekeeper behind the scenes. Most people don't share the messy chaos of family life on their carefully curated Instagram account. So in 2020 shall we all agree to let go of the notion of being a perfect parent and instead start

embracing imperfection? No one is flawless and raising kids who understand this is a positive thing. I am bringing up three teenagers and I often say to them: “I am learning how to parent just like you are learning how to grow up.” When we strive to be perfect, we are showing our children that anything less than perfect is a failure. Making mistakes is a part of the growing up process.
Here are ten ways to be a good enough parent in 2020:
Embrace imperfection Being a parent is by far the most important and impactful relationship you can have. You will love and nurture your children throughout their childhood but they will still come back and ask your advice when they are adults. You will both make mistakes and learn to forgive each other. Start learning to love each other's imperfections and you will build the foundations of a strong relationship for life. Love yourself Parents love their children unconditionally, but what about themselves? Try and silence the critical voice in your mind that says negative things about what you do. Increase the positive self-talk. Talk to yourself in the same way you would talk to your children or a close friend. Loving yourself means acknowledging that you are trying your best and that this truly is enough.
Learn to apologise Model the behaviour you want to see from your children. Learn to apologise when you do something hurtful, make a mistake, forget to do something or lose your temper. In this way, your children will learn how to make amends and start to learn when they need to say sorry too.
Have a life of your own Having a fun life separate from your children and partner is healthy and important. Make time for things like a weekly walk, book club, art class or spending time with friends. This shows your children how to maintain their own interests, hobbies and friendships outside the family unit. Take care of yourself Take care of yourself in mind, body and spirit.

Most parents put themselves last on the to-do list, and become resentful or unwell. Take time out for coffee, long baths, yoga or cocktails. It doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated, just something that makes you feel good. Spend quality time with your children Make spending quality time with your children a priority. Even if it is for just 10 to 30 minutes a day. Don't be on a phone or a gadget; be curious, ask questions, and be fully present.
Listen Children communicate many things through their behaviour and words. Listen to your children carefully by focussing all your attention on them. You may not agree with all of their feedback, but allowing them the time and space to form an opinion will help them to develop their own selfconfidence. Develop a sense of humour Your kids will love a poo joke and there will be times when you are up to your elbows in it. Parenting is a massive rollercoaster ride and being able to see the funny side of things really helps.
Don’t sweat the small stuff The house being in a mess won’t hurt anyone! If you do want to get on top of the housework, get the kids to help. We set a timer and all tidy up together. It’s amazing what can be achieved in a short space of time if the whole family gets involved. Allow your children to be who they are As a parent you want to shape, influence, and expose your children to as many opportunities as possible. But our most important job as parents is to allow our children to be who they want to be. We just need to support and cheer them on from the sidelines.
