We conducted a survey across the UK asking readers to tell us what they find useful about our magazine and how likely they would be to respond to advertising in it. We were delighted to receive almost 500 responses and by the wonderful feedback you gave us. More than 70% of our readers in the survey last year said they were highly likely to respond to advertising in our magazine or had already done so. That’s fabulous news for our advertisers and for our readers, because it means we can carry on making the magazine better and better! A whopping 79% of readers told us that they use the magazine to research ideas for local family activities or classes and clubs for children and an One reader in ME16 says: “It is a great way of trying new things, without wasting family time searching for ideas. New cottage nursery offers forest school in green setting A landmark Sevenoaks nursery building has reopened with new owners, new management and staff and a fresh vision for the children in its care. Broughton Cottage Day Nursery in Dunton Green is set in green surroundings in an area of outstanding natural beauty with an extensive secure garden and offers cottage-style charm combined with a modern interior and facilities. The previous nursery at the site owned by Longacre Childcare
closed in November 2018. Now new owners John Tomlinson and Michelle Aston have reopened it as an Ofsted-registered independent day nursery. The nursery offers care in a homely setting, with home-cooked food, for children aged from 4 months to 5 years. To cater for working parents, it will be open Monday to Friday from 7.30am to 6.30pm throughout the year. The nursery is registered for 37 children, so keeping it a small and cosy environment. Forest School with qualified staff will be part of the activities, making the outdoor space a key part of the unique offering of the nursery. Although it has a rural feel, it is convenient for commuting parents with Dunton Green station a walk away offering access to a variety of London train routes. Michelle said:“With Broughton Cottage’s impressive and secure accommodation, large garden and parking - together with our 30 years’ experience and expertise - we are in a position to provide excellence in childcare and preschool education.”

Parents can meet the experts
Free events will offer new parents and parents-to-be the chance to talk to local fertility, pregnancy, birth and postnatal service providers for help and advice. Meetings are held monthly in Tonbridge, with open mornings and evenings at The Angel Café, Christchurch and Tonbridge Baptist Church. The events are organised by The Birth Network which is a Community Interest Company. Facilitator for West Kent Henrietta Ballard explains: “The aim of the group is to bring providers together to support each other as professionals, but also
to give back to the community, allowing local families to see what is available to them to make their journey to parenthood that little bit easier.” She added: “We’d like parents to feel empowered, knowing that there are so many services out there. “The drop ins are for anyone who is thinking of starting a family, pregnant, or who has a new baby, to come and socialise, have some time out, and ask the advice of our professionals if they wish to.” The next Open Evening is at Tonbridge Baptist Church on Thursday 28 November 7.30-9pm.

Good Day at School? There’s an App for that… Behaviour-tracking apps are becoming increasingly popular as an educational tool. Parents no longer need to wait for the annual school report to learn how their child behaves at school - they can get instant updates through apps that monitor what they are doing in the classroom. One of the most common apps, ClassDojo, updates parents on what happens throughout the school day by sharing photos, videos and messages straight to their phone, and is now used by at least one teacher in half of all UK schools, according to its developers. Teachers sign-up for ClassDojo and then select the behaviours they would like to reward. When a pupil responds in a positive or negative way they can award or deduct points. The aim of the app is to teach children developmental skills and incentivise them by real-time feedback and rewards. More information at www.classdojo.com

Changes to How Schools are Assessed by Ofsted – What Parents Need to Know
As a parent choosing schools for your child, you are very likely at some stage to take a look at the Ofsted reports of those on your shortlist, to see how they performed at their latest inspection. What you may not know though is that the way in which schools are assessed and reported on by Ofsted has recently changed. Here is the low-down on these changes and what parents need to know about them. Earlier this year, Ofsted held a consultation into their inspection process. It wanted to know if it was delivering the right
By Ruth Lowe information to help schools improve, while also providing parents with a clear view of how well a school is performing in delivering a good education to its students. Interestingly, this consultation resulted in the most responses that Ofsted has ever received and included feedback from over 600 mums and dads – a clear indication that parents value Ofsted assessments as an important part of the process of deciding which school is best for their child. Currently, Ofsted gives schools a grading of one to four; One is ‘outstanding;’ two is ‘good;’ three is ‘requires improvement;’ and four is ‘inadequate.’ Although these categories are not changing, the new assessment framework has been updated in the following ways and will be effective from September 2019:

shorter and easier to digest. The aim is to give parents “the key information they need to know about a school and a sense of how it feels to be a pupil there”. Schools will be assessed in a new ‘quality of education’ category, putting the emphasis back on the quality of the curriculum being taught rather than exam results. This change aims to reduce the pressure felt by teachers who have been criticised in the past for ‘teaching to the test’ rather than covering the curriculum in a more balanced and manageable way. There will also be a new ‘personal development’ assessment which will look at how a school helps its pupils to develop character, resilience and values so that children are wellequipped to succeed in life. A separate assessment on ‘behaviour and attitudes’ will be included. Ofsted will look at whether or not school leaders tolerate bullying or harassment of pupils and staff, as well as whether they deal with behavioural problems swiftly and effectively while maintaining a calm environment. Inspections of previously graded ‘good’ schools were carried out over a period of one day. This inspection period will now be extended to two days (except in the case of smaller schools with less than 150 pupils). Any schools found to be

‘off-rolling’ pupils are likely to be judged ‘inadequate’. ‘Off-rolling’ is when a school removes a pupil without using a permanent exclusion. In these instances, removing the child is considered to be in the best interest of the school, rather than the pupil. It is a controversial practice as it could also include pressuring a parent to remove their child from the school roll. This practice is not at all encouraged or supported by Ofsted. These changes to the Ofsted inspection framework are a positive step forward in providing parents with more focussed, concise and rounded information about local schools. Schools will be rewarded with a rating that takes into account the above assessment criteria and also acknowledges where Head Teachers and teachers are working under difficult circumstances (for example in areas with high levels of deprivation or poverty). Of course, although there is considerable value in Ofsted reports, when choosing a school it’s also vital to visit, preferably with your child, speak to parents of children already there, and understand the ethos and ambitions that the school has for those in its care. In addition, parents can also look at Ofsted’s ‘Parent View’ results online at www.parentview.ofsted.gov.uk, where those with children already at school share their views for the benefit of other parents.

Bringing words on a page to life Books make ideal Christmas presents and top of our list for young children is the latest offering from Emma Chichester Clark and Sir Quentin Blake Three Little Monkeys Ride Again. Author and illustrator Emma has published over 60 books and is well known for her picture books like the Blue Kangaroo and the Melrose and Croc series. She has also illustrated for writers like Michael Morpurgo, Nanette Newman and Colin MacNaughton. Rachel Bailey talks to her. Did you always know you wanted to be an illustrator and what made you choose the wonderful world of children’s books? I did always know! I began to make little books when I was 5 years old. I wrote stories and drew pictures – mostly of rabbits and bad foxes – and I made little books with sewn up spines. I chose children’s books because there is the opportunity to use colour and to have a series of pictures together, unlike in adult books, and it is a chance to use one’s imagination to the full.

We love Blue Kangaroo in our house. Do you have a favourite book/character you’ve created? I’m so glad you love Blue Kangaroo. I am very fond of him too because he is so kind and forgiving to Lily. He is such a loyal friend. I am also fond of Melrose and Croc – two best friends who live together, one a small green crocodile, the other a yellow dog. They have a perfect relationship, I think. Sometimes
This latest book is a sequel to Three Little Monkeys which Sir Quentin Blake wrote especially for you to illustrate. That’s a lot of talent in one book! What’s it like illustrating for him? It’s very frightening! Having to show him my rough ideas was one of the most daunting things ever, because I kept imagining how he would have tackled the pictures and he would have done it so much better. But it’s also been absolutely wonderful because he is the perfect children’s book writer. He is a choreographer – he knows all the moves and where things are going. He has given me such brilliant things to draw. The more you read the text, the more you find. He is a genius. You’ve worked with a lot of great authors, do you have any stories to tell? I did work with Roald Dahl a

hundred years ago. For a short time, there was an edition of James and the Giant Peach illustrated by me. (It was soon redone by Quentin.) I remember that when I sent the cover roughs to be approved by him, they came back several times as they just weren’t right. Eventually I had a message from the man himself. He said, “It’s got to look more like a BOTTOM!” So, I made it look more like a bottom. What’s your favourite childhood book? I have always loved Madeline better than anything. I loved all the disasters – the fall into the river, the dog, the Bad Hat. I love the line, the yellow, the characters – everything. I wish I could draw like that – and write like that. The books are so deceptively simple. Simplicity is the hardest thing to achieve. They are also very witty – not patronising, and made me long to go to Paris.
