FAMILY HEALTH & WELLBEING
Getting Healthy in 2020 If 2020 is the year for a new and healthier you, then you’re not alone. January is the classic time to ditch the sofa and crisps and hit the treadmill and protein shakes. However, if you aren’t motivated to jump on the fitness bandwagon this New Year, then consider this: not only will taking up exercise improve your fitness, metabolic health (blood glucose levels) and lower your blood pressure but, as many of the problems of getting older are linked with an inactive lifestyle, it will also increase the chances of you staying healthy as you age. That doesn’t mean you have to be doing triathlons, it simply means avoiding a sedentary lifestyle. Making exercise a part of your life this year will improve your health now and in the future. How Best to Get Started? Don’t take on too much too soon – especially if you’re starting from scratch. You’re more likely to make exercise a permanent part of your life if you start gradually. Avoid vague goals like “get in better shape”. You have a better chance of achieving a specific aim like: “In 3 months I want to be able to jog to the park”. Keep it realistic - if you have any health conditions consult your GP. You’re just as able to embark on a fitness regime but you may need more guidance. Be kind to yourself if you fall short of goals - just reassess them and start again. Listen to your body - you shouldn’t have to feel exhausted to get the benefits of exercise. So how much exercise will really make a difference? Recent studies have suggested that any exercise is beneficial, but the more the better. Dr Julie Broderick, from Trinity College Dublin suggests building physical activity into your every day routine. “If exercise isn’t a habit for you and you’re spending a lot of the day sedentary – that is
sitting or resting – just start small by breaking up your sedentary behaviour.” Get Active in 5 Simple Ways Sometimes the best way to start getting fit is to make it part of your daily life. Charlie Launder, pre & postnatal personal trainer & founder of Bumps and Burpees, encourages women to get moving with 5 simple ideas: 1 It Doesn’t HAVE to be “Exercise”. If you make it fun and something you enjoy you’re much more likely to keep it up. This could be netball with friends or playing football with your children in the garden. Being active can look different for different people. 2 Set a simple challenge to keep yourself accountable. Try 50 squats every day for a week, or a short jog every other day. Just keep it achievable! 3 Leave extra time and walk instead of getting the bus or
driving. Walking is a great way to keep active and you can weave it into your day quite easily, if you plan ahead. 4 Make it a family affair! Get the kids involved. Go to the park with a ball or start a game at home that gets you active. They’ll love spending time with you and you’ll get your heart rate up! 5 Take Inspiration from Social Media. The most time consuming thing about doing a workout from home is deciding what you’re going to do, and by the time you’ve worked it out, you’ve wasted precious time! Check out Instagram for some quick and simple workouts you can do at home, for free and without equipment. Find some, save them and then as soon as you have 20 minutes free, you’ll be ready to go! For more pre and postnatal training advice, visit www.bumpsandburpees.com
Which Type of Exercise is for Me? Zumba or zorb football? Not every fitness option is for everyone – that’s why there are so many to choose from! So try out 3 or 4 and find one that keeps you coming back. Here are some popular options suitable for everyone:* NHS Couch to 5K: This programme aims to get you in good enough shape to finish a 5km run and it’s particularly popular with people trying to change a sedentary lifestyle. Parkrun: And when 5k becomes
achievable, then this is a great, social way to keep yourself running. Parkrun pride themselves on reaching people for whom physical activity hasn’t been the norm. So don’t be put off – it’s more accessible than you think. FIIT: Online classes from 25 minute Pilates to 40 minute cardio, these are a great way to exercise at home with qualified trainers. Outdoor Classes: Get outdoors with parent and child friendly exercise classes, combining exercise and socialising with
fresh air. Search your local parks for classes in your area. Or if you’re feeling brave, find a nearby lido and try out cold water swimming!
*Remember if you have any pre-existing medical conditions, it’s best to speak to your GP first. 4 Families West Kent January/February 2020

Exercise and Diet Exercise is just one part of feeling good. Without dietary change, a fitness regime will only go so far in getting you healthy. But you don’t need a drastic diet plan to see improvements. Simple swaps and diet changes can make a big difference. Here are some of my favourites: ✸Swap whole wheat pasta for your usual white pasta, same for rice. ✸Make your own muesli or granola and add freshly chopped fruit – less sugar than ordinary cereals! ✸Avoid sugary and fizzy drinks but if you like a glass of juice, halve the amount and dilute it with water to make a full glass. ✸Instead of a normal baked potato, try a baked sweet potato topped with a feta or tuna salad. ✸Try 5 days of eating healthily, avoid alcohol and sweet treats and then for the final 2 days enjoy them, albeit sensibly! Mix it Up! One of the biggest battles of a fitness journey is keeping it fresh. Keep trying new classes, and don’t stick with the same type of activity if you feel your motivation decreasing. Coupling physical activity with social engagement is thought to optimise the benefits of exercising. If you struggle to find something you really enjoy, or don’t feel like you’ve caught the “exercise bug” then mix it up, try something different. What about Nordic Walking, Pilates barre or a musical theatre dance class? For more from Gabrielle Nash, follow her blog and Instagram @thelondonishmum www.familiesonline.co.uk

Bounding into better health at SEN sessions Trampoline park Jump In is leading the way in exercise therapy sessions which benefit those across virtually the whole spectrum of disabilities.
Specialist Rebound Therapy forms part of the inclusive Relaxed sessions at Jump In Tonbridge, where those with special needs are encouraged to explore unassisted play with their families and carers in a safe, lower sensory environment. SEN (Special Educational Needs) sessions at the park run between 4-6pm on Wednesdays and now also 9-10am on Sundays. Carers go free. Rebound Therapy has been proven to provide a huge number of potential therapeutic and physiological benefits, from cardio-respiratory, muscle tone and balance and posture through to perception and communication. Benefits that are more specific to autism
include: improvements in calmness, focus, concentration, eye contact, memory, following instructions, motivation, self-esteem, confidence, potential for learning across the curriculum, and happiness. Other benefits would be: reduction in tactile defensiveness, anxiety, agitation, shimming, rocking, self-harming, hitting, and anti-social behaviours. Rebound Therapy-qualified instructors are on hand to work either one to one or in groups after a full assessment of needs is carried out. Jump In in Tonbridge is also championing inclusivity in its staffing of these sessions. The park appointed frequent visitor Tom Perry (pictured right) to help run their Relaxed sessions. It marks a milestone for the 27-yearold Marden man who suffers from Dravet Syndrome, a rare severe form of epilepsy that has also left him with severe autism and learning and behavioural difficulties. Tom now helps run the Wednesday SEN sessions paired with another member of staff and a carer in tow. Tasks include marshalling and checking wristbands and general duties but he also plays a role in overseeing the safe use of the trampolines. Regional manager Joe Upstone said: “It is important that everyone should be able to use the trampoline park. It shows how much you can make a difference to an individual in so many ways.
“We are a place for everyone and don’t discriminate, which fits our core values.” SEN sessions at Jump In Trampoline Park in Tonbridge run between 4-6pm on Wednesdays and now also 9-10am on Sundays. Sessions cost £7. Free for carers.

Practical Strategies for Supporting an Anxious Child By Alicia Eaton
We often hear that today’s children are more anxious than previous generations. Growing up in an environment with worrying news items about climate change or terrorism, an endless stream of exams and the digital nightmare of social media competitiveness all contribute to this heightened sense of anxiety. No wonder then that many of today’s parents are finding it a struggle to deal with their children’s anxieties. But there are simple things parents can do to help. Here are some practical strategies which you can incorporate into daily life to soothe anxiety and help your children feel calmer and more at ease. Practise Breathing Techniques Anxiety can lead to a shortness of breath which in turn creates a pale complexion, sweaty hands and face, tightness in the chest and even giddiness or fainting. “Take a nice deep breath” is a traditional phrase that we’re all familiar with, but taking a deep inward breath is precisely what an anxious person doesn’t need to do. Anxious feelings can be caused by having too much air trapped in the lungs, which gives the sensation of not being able to breathe properly. Toys and games can help children practise controlling their breathing and here are some useful ways to introduce this concept. ✸ a hand-held windmill toy with sails; ✸ blowing bubbles through a wand; ✸ blowing up balloons; ✸ blowing bubbles in a drink through a straw; ✸ playing blow football; ✸ blowing a feather from one side of a table to the other; ✸ blowing up an imaginary paper
bag through a scrunched-up hand. Not only will your child feel calmer after playing these games, but they’ll get a feel for how to control their breathing more effectively when they are feeling anxious. Create a Worry Box If you have a child that’s stuck in a cycle of worrying about future events and repeatedly asking “yes, but what if…..,” it will be more helpful to restrict the amount of time given over to discussion about these worries. Find a box. It can be an old shoebox, or a small, attractively decorated one so long as it has a lid and can be closed easily. Explain to your child that this is going to be their personal Worry Box. Put a supply of paper and felt-tips inside the box. Each time your child gets stuck in a cycle of worries, ask them to take a sheet of paper from the Worry Box and choose a coloured pen. Having a good selection of coloured pens is useful because you can ask your child what colour they think this particular worry is.
Ask them to write down or draw a picture of the worry. Once they’ve finished, fold the piece of paper and put it into the Worry Box. Put the lid firmly on the box and put it away. Once a week, sit down with your child and take out all the pieces of paper in the box and read through the worries one by one. Encourage your child to be pleasantly surprised at just how many worries took care of themselves. Remember: most of the things we worry about never happen!
Encourage your child to keep a journal. This can be a physical notebook to record events or doodle in, or they can use any devices they may have for the same purpose. Each day, ask your child to write down three positive things that happened. These can be quite simple to begin with: we had pizza for lunch or the maths teacher forgot to set homework. If it’s easier, you can introduce this technique conversationally, either in the car or at the dinner table. Start the ball rolling by mentioning something good that happened to you that day. Too many of us fall into the trap of only talking about the problems and difficulties that we encountered during our day.
Encourage an Attitude of Positivity Negative thinking can easily become a habit that’s hard to break. Switching your child’s thought patterns around will help to prevent this from happening.

EARLY YEARS
Where children learn and grow in a natural setting Play, fresh air, lots of time outdoors and no screens! This is the formula for happy children at Weald Preschool, which has a large garden and a rural village setting. A range of activities aims to help children develop socially, physically and intellectually in a safe, caring environment.
The children go outside to expend energy and be creative every day - rain or shine – in the large outdoor play area. The Preschool has a ‘forest school’ concept where children are allowed the freedom to explore the (enclosed) playground themselves. Other activities each week include music and movement, gym and singing. Inside, there is a quiet room for when children need some down time. Established since the 1970s, the preschool has staff with decades of combined experience and the lack of staff turnover makes for a secure environment for children. The nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage and has an Ofsted Good rating. JOY OF READING
From a TV career to time travelling with a hamster After working as a TV producer on many well-known shows, including ITV’s This Morning with Richard Madeley and Judy Finnegan, Channel 4’s Big Breakfast and Pet Rescue, Ross Welford began writing Time Travelling With A Hamster in 2014. His second book, What Not To Do If You Turn Invisible followed a year later. The 1,000 Year Old Boy was published in January 2018, The Dog Who Saved The World in January 2019, and The Kid Who Came From Space in January 2020.
The knowledge that I have made a difference like that is awesome: that’s a proper superpower!
Rachel Bailey talks to Ross about his best-selling novels for young readers (aged 8+). What made you swap the glamorous world of television to become a full-time writer? It was necessity, really. TV is a tough job: it’s long hours, the
pay isn’t especially good and it honestly isn’t all that glamorous! The interesting jobs began to dry up and I realised I needed a new career path… Your first novel was Time Travelling With A Hamster and that was followed by What Not To Do
To celebrate the publication of Ross’ newest book The Kid who came from Space, we have a FULL SET of his five books to give away to one lucky reader! To enter, email your name and contact details and your child’s name, heading your email “Ross Welford competition”, to editor@familieswestkent.co.uk Closing date is February 25. A winner will then be chosen at random and notified.
WIN
If You Turn Invisible. Is there a particular superpower you wish you had? Oh yes: the ability to write a full-length book once a year effortlessly. It’s not exciting like invisibility, but it’s a power that I would do almost anything to possess.
You describe yourself as a life-long magic-nerd. Care to elaborate? I enjoy writing about impossible things becoming possible, and that is exactly what magic tricks do. It’s an interest I have had since I was quite small, and this year I was admitted to the Magic Circle, which was a very proud moment. I include magic in all my school and festival presentations, and the tricks all have a relevance to my books, or to reading generally.
As well as having a talent for writing, we’ve heard you put on a pretty impressive event when you visit schools/ festivals. What do you enjoy most about sharing your books with young fans? It’s a privilege simply to meet readers. I especially like it when a teacher introduces a child saying “He/she didn’t like reading until they discovered your books…”
What’s your favourite childhood book/author? Growing up I loved The Magic Faraway Tree books by Enid Blyton and loved them again when I read them aloud to my own kids. She was phenomenal: the sheer volume of her output was astonishing. There are occasional lapses of quality, but they are pretty rare and she seldom repeats herself.
The Kid who came from Space is available from 9 January 2020 priced £6.99. Visit Ross’ website: www.rosswelford.com

EDUCATION
Call for daily nature hour
New research shows outdoor play has major benefits for the development of young children including boosting confidence, building better relationships with teachers and classmates and an increase in wellbeing and health. Now Wildlife Trusts are calling on the government for every child in the UK to spend one hour outside in nature, every day, as part of the school curriculum. The study, commissioned by The Wildlife Trusts, examined 451 children aged 8 or 9 years old across 12 areas of England. The research by the Institute of Education at UCL was one of the largest ever studies to look into the effects of regular outdoor activities on children’s wellbeing.
Overall, the results found that children’s wellbeing dramatically increased after they had spent time outdoors. Not only did they gain additional social benefits, but they showed high levels of enjoyment, too. As well as encouraging the children’s creativity, the study also found being outdoors helped in many other ways, including: ✿ the children showed an increase in their personal wellbeing and health over time ✿ 90% of children felt they learned something new about the natural world ✿ 79% felt that their experience could help their school work ✿ 81% agreed they had better relationships with their teachers ✿ 79% reported stronger bonds with other children in their class. And after the activities, 84% of children felt that they were capable of doing new things. Nigel Doar, The Wildlife Trusts’ director of strategy, said: ”We’re calling on government to recognise the multiple benefits of nature for children – and ensure that at least one hour per school day is spent outdoors learning and playing in wild places.”

The benefits of out-of-school activities Activities that take place completely away from the school environment don’t just keep restless children busy or entertained and help working parents manage their child’s spare time, they can also offer great developmental benefits that will help them academically, physically and socially. Here are just five of the top benefits: New Friendships Outside of the school environment, your child is likely to make friendships with children that don’t go to their school and get used to socialising with children of all ages outside the structure of the formal school day. Improving Life and Social Skills Outside school activities provide an ideal environment in which to nurture social skills and confidence. Many extracurricular activities work to teach children the value of working as a team to achieve a mutual goal — a skill that will benefit them in their future endeavours. Boosting Academic Performance Discovering that they have a talent can give a child a new source of confidence or a passion that translates into their engagement and behaviour at school. For example, performing in drama club can improve confidence in
speaking up in class and inspire creative writing. Playing an instrument will help children understand music lessons. Building Self-Esteem In a busy classroom it can sometimes be hard for a child to make themselves heard. Outside of school activities will give your child the chance to build their self-esteem. Most groups or teams are more intimate than the typical classroom environment, making them less intimidating for children. Children may also be more interested than they are in their lessons and will engage more easily with the activities involved. Promoting Healthy Hobbies Children with a regular activity are likely to spend less static time glued to a smartphone or screen and the interests that they develop during outside of school activities are likely to mean they spend more time practising skills and pursuing their passions. The skills and habits a child learns during his or her school years help to shape the kind of future they will lead as an adult. As a result, outside of school activities that promote everything from healthy-living habits, to leadership skills, good time-management and better social or academic performance have plenty of advantages to offer.

Perform is celebrating its 20th anniversary! Families chatted to founder, Lucy Quick.
How did Perform start? I was a musical theatre actress in Oliver! at the London Palladium and I loved working with children. I had a vision for a drama school that wasn’t about talent or auditions; where performing arts would be used to develop what we now call the 4 Cs: confidence, communication, coordination and concentration. Where is Perform at now? Starting with two classes in 2000, we now run 472 schools across the South East and West, employ over 250 teachers and have almost 8000 children attending weekly. What’s the secret of Perform’s success? We put child development at the heart of everything we do. What does the future hold? Opening more Perform schools across the country – we’re just launching in Nottingham – and continuing our
confidence crusade to help children fulfil their potential through drama, dance and singing. What are you proudest of? My teachers. They are the most inspirational bunch of talented and enthusiastic people you’ll ever meet.
