As I am writing this, we are only hours back from our Easter holiday to Center Parcs in Holland; we had an amazing time! Check out the various videos which we made whilst we were over there on our magazine FB page. In true tradition, we came home with some newly purchased treasured items. Our eldest chose a replica formula 1 racing car and our youngest a cute, cuddly monkey. You know the ones…with Velcro on the arms and legs so you can hang them around handlebars, bag straps, your brother’s neck (!) etc. He is Theo’s new best friend. Which reminds me of a funny story that I want to share with you now. Theo has been one of those kids who has a cuddly toy – in his case ‘Doggy’ – who has been surgically attached to him for most of his short life (he’s almost 4!) We have had plenty of those moments, which pretty much all parents have had: when you suddenly remember that you’ve forgotten ‘Doggy’. He has never ventured far though and we have always taken good care of him. Until one day a few months ago, when I returned from the gym with both boys in tow and it was nap time; the familiar question of ‘Where’s Doggy?’ rang out. We searched high and low (a common occurrence) and we came to the conclusion that he must be still at the gym, perhaps in the café by the table we had our lunch on. Cutting a long story short, Doggy was NOT at the gym…Doggy was NOWHERE to be seen. Perhaps I should have taken the advice of other parents, who told me to buy two of your child’s favourite soft toy/blanket, but I didn’t, and I was paying for it now! Thankfully, Theo did go to sleep in the daytime and in the night time without his much-loved Doggy…eventually, but it was not the same. Onto Ebay I went, frantically searching for a replacement ‘Doggy’ knowing that the item was no longer available in stores (kicking myself really hard by now!) At the click of a button a brand new ‘Doggy’ was on its way! Yippee! Now for the story to tell Theo. Of course, Doggy had gone on his holidays to somewhere hot – which was why he was going to return all lovely and brown as opposed to the faded creamy colour he had been previously – He had also done plenty of resting, eating and drinking whilst on holiday so he was going to return much plumper and full of life. Revived even! Needless to say, Theo was not buying it, especially when he saw ‘Doggy’. We continued the lie and eventually, he ended up believing it.

One night, putting him to bed he said to me: ‘Mummy, I don’t want Doggy to go on holiday again because I miss him.’ SUCCESS! Lie believed. The mystery of where original Doggy was remained unsolved, until one evening, I grabbed the foam roller – housed in the corner of our lounge – in a bid to ease the pain in my back. This is clearly not something I do often enough because MONTHS after Doggy went missing, he returned. I picked up the foam roller and thought to myself, ‘what is THAT stuffed inside?’ Out I pulled…original Doggy. It’s fair to say, some swear words could be heard in our lounge on that evening! Oh! the joys of parenting. It was topped off by my Mum saying: “Well, you haven’t cleaned behind the sofa in a while then!” SIGH… This issue sees our special party feature – be sure to have a good read through to see what amazing entertainment is available for your child’s birthday party in our local area. STEM: Helping children with the fundamentals of education STEM is an acronym we all hear a lot at the moment, if you haven’t heard it before; it stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. It is used to encapsulate those industries that have a dependency on one or more of the STEM disciplines and in turn is used to refer to education of those subjects. Why are we hearing so much about it? STEM industries are seeing a huge skills gap and this gap is only getting wider as demand grows and supply is yet to increase. Even careers, which we view as traditionally less technical, like farming, are using some of the most advanced forms of technical engineering. Fewer and fewer students, especially girls, are taking STEM beyond compulsory education and into industry. This is important because by achieving gender parity in the workplace and engaging girls, STEM industries could significantly close that gap. Contrasting this, some educators feel this rise in STEM focus is taking young pupils further away from creativity and the arts. Could bridging the gap from STEM to STEAM (adding the Arts) provide a solution for both education and industry?
Did you know? Playing with constructions toys regularly can physically change your child’s brain function within three months. Whilst many children enjoy science, technology, engineering and maths in school, less than 20% believe a career in these fields is for them. As the world around us changes so rapidly, opportunities in STEM continue to increase while the level of students with the skills to fill these positions remains static. Large companies like BP need to remain economically competitive and creative in their field to ensure economic growth, however a shortage 6 Families Vale of York
of suitable applicants is stifling this progression. The UK needs 70,000 additional engineers every year up until 2020 to bridge the current skills gap. As more and more aspects of everyday life become digitised and automated, the industry needs young people who do not fear this rise in technology but can work in collaboration with it meaning computational thinking and creativity is vital.
Did you know? Having the opportunity to build, create and tinker from an early age is essential for developing analysis and imagination skills. It is essential that children, of all ages, have the opportunity to properly engage with STEM and what is has to offer before they make educational decisions which shift them away from potential careers in these industries. Coding is certainly becoming a large trend in both primary and secondary schools. As the International Society of Technology in Education (ISTE) suggest, coding is the ‘new literacy’, preparing learners for the most advanced technologies. Although, at the same time, research carried out by CFE Research and the University of Manchester showed that 58% of primary pupils did not receive at least 2 hours of science per week. Teachers can lack the confidence to teach STEM due to its perceived complexity, technicality and expense. The starting point for STEM though is provoking curiosity in children, which doesn’t need to be complex or expensive. Activities which encourage self-discovery, learning through failure, team work and problem solving can contribute to later engagement in STEM careers.

Imagine your child learning to build a speaker from scratch in music, or learning the techniques of David Hockney on a tablet in Art. The arts in STEAM should not be viewed in isolation, STEAM is about applying creative thinking of STEM subjects. Students today need the skills of tomorrow; they need to be able to apply the skills they have in a creative manner to keep up with the ever-changing industry. Those with creativity will be more resilient to automation therefore viewing STEM and creativity as separate is doing a disservice to our children.
Did you know? You can instil the foundations of STEAM by encouraging curiosity, discovery, and reinforcing every mistake is an opportunity to learn. Creativity is essential for innovation and innovation is essential for industry. In order to get children engaging with Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths in a way that inspires them to commit to these subjects further in education, we need to recognise the importance of the arts. By including the arts STEAM becomes increasingly appealing and less intimidating for children. Learning becomes more fun and engaging, especially for young girls. Creativity is a core skill which aids with essential problem solving, critical thinking and adaptability. By using familiar activities like story telling or performing arts, we can begin to engage children from a young age and encourage them to be curious, creative and innovative. Returning to work? Top tips for creating a standout CV By Miranda Gregory

or many, the thought of updating their CV after being on a career break fills them with dread. Getting yourself into the mindset of CV writing can be a struggle and then how do you deal with the pesky career gap that’s going to be right at the top? Whilst you might be inwardly groaning and putting off the inevitable, just follow these tips and you’ll end up with a top notch CV that will be the first step to securing your dream job.
1) Preparation Abraham Lincoln famously said: “Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I’ll spend the first four sharpening the axe” This can equally be applied to CV writing. The more preparation you do, the easier you will find it to put your CV together. Clear some time for yourself, grab some paper (a glass of wine is optional!) and start brainstorming. Write down all your achievements, no matter how small. It doesn’t have to be in any kind of order... just as they come into your mind. Think about how you were remembered in each role that you’ve had. Jot down stats and data that are important. For example: By how much did you exceed your sales targets? What was the size of the team that you managed? What was the budget of the projects you worked on? Not only is this essential preparation for a well-written CV, but if you’re suffering from any selfconfidence issues, this is a great exercise to remind you what you did and achieved in your ‘previous’ life. You’ve done great things before….you can and will do them again!

3) Career Experience This can sometimes be the painful bit... but because you’ve already done your preparation, it should be a breeze! It’s no good simply listing your role and responsibilities. The secret to an eyecatching CV is making sure you stand-out for all the right reasons and this is where your achievements come in. These are what will make you unique and this is what will get a recruiter or hiring manager excited about you. Make sure you list all your previous jobs, starting with the most recent, briefly mention your role and main responsibilities and then devote as much space as you can to your achievements and the skills that you learnt. It is very difficult to come across as ‘braggy’ or arrogant on a CV and if your CV doesn’t make you squirm then you are not selling yourself enough.
4) Think like an employer What sort of language are employers using in their job descriptions? If hiring managers see clear similarities between their job descriptions and your CV, the more likely it is that your CV will appeal to them and you’ll get that all important interview. It’s important to think about how your words come across, as well as what you’re actually writing. Use ‘power’ verbs: ‘generated’, ‘optimised’, ‘increased’ and try to make sure you say as much as you can, in as few words as possible! Be direct, be professional.

I am often asked “Do I need to put a career break on my CV?” Simply, Yes you should! As uncomfortable as you might feel to put this on your CV, see it as another opportunity to sell yourself. Did you take the opportunity to do some volunteer work or did you do a social media course or learn Spanish? Try and present it in as positive a light as possible and really think as to whether you learnt any new skills. Don’t put things like “Excellent time-keeper as I had to schedule my days around nap-time” or “Excellent organisational skills: Organised the schedules of my two

Children’s parties are always a hot topic of conversation in most households across the country. Who to invite? What theme? Which location? We’ve talked to party specialists and planners to find out the top party ideas for 2018, so you don’t have to.
Unusual Themes
Think of a party with a twist. Top party organiser Fable & Moon (www.fableandmoon.com) says “Children’s parties are becoming even more sophisticated in 2018! Unicorns and Mermaids are still going strong but expect a fresh twist on the theme. Also expect to see wedding trends making their way into children’s parties, particularly celestial (moons and stars) and all things holographic. Think, oversized disco balls and lots and lots of sparkle!”
Chocolate Parties
Most kids love chocolate; it’s messy, fun and creative. What’s not to love? Hire a chocolatier to come to your house and teach your children to make some fantastic chocs. Alternatively hire some moulds and melt dark, milk and white chocolate so they can make their own. The chocolate is hot so this option is probably not suitable for very small children. Escape rooms are a great choice for older children. You get locked in a room and have to work out how to get out. It’s a great team-building experience and no mess in your house! Many escape rooms have themes - you could even get guests to dress up to match it! You need to check what the age range is and whether you need adult supervision.
Top tips for a budget party Timing If you hold a party between 3pm and 5pm, you can provide party snacks or treats instead of a meal. Try fruit kebabs that you dip in melted chocolate for a fun treat. Hiring a chocolate fountain could also be a fun way to end the party. Just warn the parents not to dress their kids in their best party clothes! Older children would probably prefer a pizza delivery.

Your pound shop can be a treasure trove of party napkins and decorations. Buy plain paper bags and get the children to personalise them. You could also make cupcakes and get the kids to decorate them. Party favours and entertainment all at the same time!
Themed Parties
Choose a theme like pirates, Alice in Wonderland or teddies for the younger kids and make all the games centred on your chosen theme. Decorations can be homemade – get the whole family involved. Pinterest is a great place to get inspiration.
Share
Split the cost by sharing the party with a classmate whose birthday is at a similar time. Just make sure you agree who is doing what!

Parent’s party problem… My son’s 8th birthday party was looming and, love him as much as I do, I really didn’t fancy having a bunch of his boisterous friends running around the house, spilling their drinks and treading food into the floor- arrrgghhhhhhh! But what could I do? I’d looked around to find somewhere else to have the party, but nowhere else seemed suitable. I was about to accept defeat and have the party at home when a colleague mentioned that their daughter had been to a birthday party at Summit Indoor Adventure in Selby. I had a quick look online and it looked great. After picking the kids up from school we drove to Selby to have a look around. WOW! We were impressed. It was easy to find. It’s next to Selby Leisure Centre on Scott Road near the town centre. There is plenty of parking and whilst it’s pay and display, you get your money back when you eat or do an activity. There’s loads to do: a huge adventure play area, a couple of ski simulators, indoor skate and ride, an aerial trek course that is sure to get the adrenaline pumping, six ten pin bowling lanes and, the one that grabbed my sons’ attention, twenty themed Clip and Climb walls.

Tips for fussy eaters By Nathalie Gudgeon
I
n years of practice I have encountered many worried parents concerned about their children’s eating habits. As a parent, I too have been left tearing my hair out over unfinished meals and meal time tantrums. I always begin my consultations and workshops by explaining to parents about the division of responsibility and refer them to the Ellyn Satter Institute for more information.
Involve
The division of responsibility is very simple. It refers to our responsibility as a parent to feed our children and in a nut shell, provide the food. This is where the parent responsibility ends and is passed to the child. It is then the child’s responsibility to eat the food! As a parent you have fulfilled your role.
Sneak foods in…
I also reference a book by Carlos Gonzalez. My Child Won’t Eat. Gonzalez explains that children avoid vegetables because they have small stomachs. If we fill this space with vegetables there is little room for the denser nutrients which help our children to grow and thrive – protein, healthful fats and complex carbohydrates. This explains why many children prefer not to wean and are happy to continue breastfeeding solely. The breast milk is a much better source of calories than the broccoli cube! Gonzalez suggests fussy eating is not a child problem but a parent problem. My number one piece of advice is to RELAX about the food. Focus on providing clean proteins, healthful fats and complex carbohydrates in your child’s diet and sneak in the veggies where you can. Below are some tips for feeding fussy eaters.

Even if your child will not eat certain foods, still offer the food on the plate or a separate plate if it upsets the child. It is then the child’s choice to take or leave it.
Smoothies
Smoothies are the best way that I personally get good nutrition into my own children. You can hide everything in a smoothie from avocado, protein powder, fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds. Refer to my website for more smoothie recipes.

Choco-Avo-Banana Cream Smoothie Ingredients
1 cup of Ice
1 ripe avocado
1 mejadool date
Handful of nuts (cashews are very creamy but almonds, walnuts, brazils and hazelnuts are great additions)
To serve
125ml of coconut yogurt 1 tbsp Baobab powder (optional)
1 tsp raw cacao nibs
Directions
1 scoop/serving of good quality protein powder (I recommend Nuzest)
I use a Vitamix blender for this recipe, which is a high-powered smoothie maker but you can use any smoothie maker that can blend ice. The Nutribullet works well with ice and is a fraction of the cost.
1.5 cups of coconut water
Add all the ingredients to the blender
2 medium frozen bananas, cut into bite sized chunks
except the protein powder. The water should just cover the ingredients so add more if needed before blending! The mixture will be very concentrated and thick. Add the Ice and continue to blend until you get a nice creamy consistency or the consistency that you like. Again, you may need to add more water if you prefer it a little runnier. I add the protein powder last so to protect it from any damage during the cycle.

Since William’s Den opened last summer, 2017, we have wanted to take the boys to explore what’s on offer. We finally made our visit on a slightly wet and chilly day in January. Open all year round, William’s Den is the perfect place to spend the whole day having fun with all of the family no matter what the weather. The co-founders of William’s Den have clearly spent a long time considering how to create the perfect place for kids and adults to enjoy family time together. They feel that ‘William’s Den is all about play. It’s about getting kids active – bringing the great outdoors in and the indoors out.’ What’s on offer is really impressive and the boys loved it all! We started out in the ‘Den’ a 475sqm play barn for all ages with a Tree House, Forest Glade, Eagle’s Nest and Rainmaker. The sand and water play areas are really great, providing opportunities for kids to get messy whilst learning! Our youngest spent a lot of time here, digging in the sand, transferring sand to different places and loading sand onto the pulley system to transport it up above. It was clear to see children making new friends and playing with siblings, working together to carry out many tasks: design, build, create. Parents are able to play along with their children and much to my husband’s delight, there are no small tunnels to crawl through or tight areas to navigate like there are in soft play barns! There are lockers available to keep your bags, but most parents used the space around the outside of the Den to store their belongings and to take rest breaks from all of the fun! A small kiosk style servery inside the Den means that parents can access drinks and snacks readily. Outside there is as much to explore as there is inside. We could easily imagine how in warmer weather, what’s on offer outside could keep the kids entertained for hours. There are picnic tables to make use of if you have brought your own food, which is a great facility. Outside, you will find endless adventures with vast open spaces and wonderful views, children can explore to their heart’s content and connect with nature. They can run wild (always good to know!), enjoy water and sand play, climb wooden structures, whizz on zip wires and spend hours building their own dens from scratch. There are also two mud kitchens for those of you brave enough to let your kids get REALLY dirty! The facilities at William’s Den are superb. As soon as we pulled up in the car, we were impressed as the car parking spots

are spacious (almost unheard of in most attractions) and well designed. The toilets are one of the best things about what’s on offer! You may laugh, but you just wait until you experience them. Chatting to the owner, it was wonderful to hear how much research had gone into the design of William’s Den and the toilets were not given any less thought than anywhere else. They’re unisex to allow both Mums and Dads to take small children to the toilet. There are family cubicles with baby change facilities, toddler and grown up toilets. As well, cubicles with two toilets inside – one for the grown-up and one for the little one, which was something we have not seen anywhere else. A simple concept, but genius! No more sticking your foot under the door to hold it closed because of the fear from either of you about locking it from the inside and no more shouting over the cubicle ‘Mummy will just be a minute’. Perfect! The gift shop offers a range of stock; all at reasonable prices. There are some wonderful things to purchase from wellies to Pac-a-macs and the Peter Rabbit merchandise definitely caught my eye. We came away with a small push along tractor and a squidgy centipede. Standard. In cold, wintry January, a picnic was not an option, so we chose to have our lunch in the ‘Kitchen Table’. There is a selection of items on the menu and hot meals are available in adult or child sized portions along with a good range of pizzas. They have sandwich boxes for kids too and a nice selection of ice-cream, not to be missed! What did catch our eye was the extensive drinks menu, offering wine and beer – they have thought of everything it would seem ☺ Lastly, it’s important to mention that every part of William’s Den has been built to create a place that re-uses, recycles and fills us up instead of taking away. The play equipment is even made from natural materials. Most of the electricity comes from the solar panels on the roof and the loos are powered by a rainwater harvest system to re-use rainwater. It’s fair to say that we have not had a better family day out than at William’s Den in a long time. Get yourself there to experience it all for yourself!

The weather is getting warmer and the summer holidays are looming. Families takes a look at some cool, outdoor adventure activities to get everyone off their screens and enjoying the great outdoors.
Park Run If you haven’t come across the phenomena that is Park Run you should check out your local options. Volunteers set up 5km races in parks across the UK and there are now 500 locations. They also do shorter runs for kids aged 4 to 14, which are 2km long. We go running as a family about once a month and then have a massive brunch afterward. It’s a great way to exercise together and best of all it’s free! More information at www.parkrun.org.uk.
Coasteering Coasteering is an exhilarating activity that allows you to explore rocks and the sea. It combines rock climbing and scrambling, with jumping and swimming in the water. Britain has an amazing and varied coastline and many locations that offer coasteering. You wear a wetsuit and helmet for the activity, and it is suitable for children aged 8+. There is a plethora of coasteering companies in Britain. Horseriding on the Beach Even for a beginner, there is nothing quite like riding a horse on a beach. Newquay Riding Stables in Cornwall (www. newquayridingstables.co.uk) offers beautiful scenic beach and coastal rides. You can also ride on the beach with Studland Riding stables in Dorset (www.studlandstables.com).

A canoe is perfect for a family adventure afloat. You can canoe on lakes, rivers and the sea and it’s an accessible sport for the whole family. You can share kayaks and double canoes too.
