Small doses have a beneficial effect on mood and can be an excellent remedy for some forms of depression, as well as for severe asthma in children. The sun is also vital or synthesis of vitamin D. Vitamin D Facts Vitamin D is indispensable to fix calcium in our bones and prevent rickets and skeletal deformities. Official figures show that the number of cases of Vitamin D deficiency in children doubled in the last four years, with recommendations for Vitamin D supplements almost tripling for risk groups in this period. Between 8% and 24% of children in the UK may have low Vitamin D, with those aged under 5 at higher risk. Also at risk are pregnant and breastfeeding women, people over 65, those with low exposure to the sun and those with darker skin. The good news is that just 15 minutes of sun exposure a day and a healthy diet (including foods rich in Vitamin D, such as oily fish, meat and egg yolks) are usually enough to prevent vitamin D deficiency. Red Flags It’s important not to overdo the sun. Overexposure can lead to sunburn, sunstroke, skin darkening during pregnancy, skin aging,

the worsening of acne and the dangerous melanoma – which is also diagnosed in children. The incidence of skin cancer in children has increased by 29% in the UK since the late 1970s. You should seek medical advice if you or your child has a mole that gets bigger, changes shape (particularly getting an irregular edge), changes colour, itches, hurts, bleeds or swells. Sun Safety ✿ Avoid exposure during the times when the sun is strongest (between 11am and 4pm). ✿ Keep babies and toddlers out of direct sun and cover their skin with loose cotton clothes. ✿ Apply a sunscreen with a factor SPF of 30 (or higher according to skin type) to exposed parts of your child’s skin – and re-apply often. ✿ Get your child to wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. Take extra care when choosing your child’s sunglasses. Check for those that carry the “CE” mark - do not confuse the darkness of the lenses with their ability to filter UV rays. ✿ Children are exposed to UV rays on cloudy days, even outside of the summer months. In

Avoid ibuprofen if your child starts vomiting. Seek medical advice if your child is experiencing any of the following: dizziness, intense headache, sickness, high temperature, confusion, hot flushed dry skin, blistering or swelling of their skin. The onset of sunstroke can be sudden, resulting in unconsciousness in a matter of minutes. Medical assistance should be sought as soon as possible. Taking these recommendations into account, you and your family will be able to enjoy healthy daily sun exposure throughout the whole year.

A manual toothbrush should be used until your child is 3 years old, after which your child may begin to use an electric toothbrush. Electric toothbrushes are clinically proven to clean better than manual toothbrushes so everyone should be using one. As your child gets older, flossing should be introduced to the cleaning routine. In addition to cleaning at home which is essential, regular professional cleaning is also important. Due to the complex nature of the mouth, it is easy for certain areas not to be cleaned as well as others. As part of a six monthly check-up, your dentist should clean any areas where a build up of plaque has occurred and also teach the correct cleaning technique. As children get older they should start seeing a dental hygienist on are regular basis. A child’s early visits to the dentist are essential in setting up good habits to continue through life.

Diet A healthy balanced diet benefits the whole body, but especially our teeth. Acid in the mouth is the cause of damage to tooth surfaces. Acid can take the form of acidic food and drink or acid produced by bacteria fuelled by sugar. Sugar in your child’s diet should therefore be limited as much as possible. Look out for hidden sugars in processed foods and prepared meals and make sure that a day when sugar is consumed always ends with good cleaning. Still water is the most tooth-friendly drink and acidic drinks like fruit
juices should be diluted to reduce the acidity. It is essential that your child does not eat after tooth brushing in the evening. Prevention The biting surface of the back teeth is a common place for decay to start because it is rough and plaque sticks easily to it. A preventative treatment called fissure sealing eliminates the problem. The deep pits and fissures of the back teeth are sealed with a coating which leaves the teeth smooth and decay resistant. The procedure is easy, safe and painless. Children today are very fortunate that their parents have the knowledge to save them the problems previous generations had to endure – so make sure you translate this knowledge into action!

Why It’s Important for Children to be Bored
By Merinda D’Aprano attention spans and a greater requirement to be helped, supported and constantly stimulated than ever before. Imagination is undervalued, and children expect constant attention and reinforcement even to get on with what they can easily achieve alone.
Structured time can close off the imagination and the ability to be self-determining, prevent children from being independent and undermine their confidence in their own abilities.

We all know the adage that ‘necessity is the mother of invention.’ And invention, like all human endeavour, is only possible if it can be imagined. Imagination is something that we can feed with ideas and technical understanding, but it is only truly possible in a space where we can be openly reflective. It is at its most fertile, not when under pressure to find a solution, but during times when we have nothing else to do. In truth, IMAGINATION is the mother of invention and a critical faculty for
learning and success in life. Unfortunately though, we have become accustomed to listening to the noise of the external world as if it holds all the keys to life, and to rejecting our inner world of creative thinking and imagining. How often do we put on music or television or check our phones or email in quiet moments to avoid engaging with our inner selves? We have become so afraid of boredom that we frantically fill our time, feeling guilty if we don’t. It is no wonder then, that screen time (of every sort) has become a filler for those empty seconds of the day and evening We also try to save our children from boredom. Unfortunately,

filling their lives with external activities, deprives them of their inner lives and their vital connections to themselves. This creates in them a fear of being alone and unoccupied with their thoughts and themselves. It makes them dependent and possibly contributes to them becoming lonely, unfulfilled and unhappy in later life. Many experts refer to the need for unstructured time because children participate in so many extra-curricular activities, after a full, structured day at school and homework. Structured time can close off the imagination and the ability to be self-determining, prevent children from being independent and undermine their confidence in their own abilities. Keeping children fully immersed in set activities teaches them that they can only enjoy success or have fun in structured ways. In these situations, they have little control and not much need for self-motivation, other than to compete (hopefully successfully) against other children doing the same. While this can, of course, promote skills and team spirit, children also need time to be imaginative and develop strategic play or transfer their skills to other situations. Constant structured activity and games can stifle individuality and reinforce the need to comply rather than to innovate. As a teacher with 28 years’ experience I would say that children in general have shorter
When faced with anything they don’t understand or feels like hard work they say they are bored. This is one of the results of constant stimulation. It becomes an addiction, alongside an underlying nagging tiredness that creeps into children’s lives when they don’t have time for adequate reflection, rest and recreation. Maria Montessori wrote about free play (which modern children often claim is boring) enabling children to become active and creating an alert and receptive frame of mind. She demonstrated that children perform better in all areas when allowed the full scope of their imagination and when allowed to manage their own time. She also showed that children are calmer, more thoughtful and more articulate because they have time to rehearse ideas and think things through. They are able to make their own positive decisions and are far less reliant on adult approval before moving on. Montessori went as far as to say that ‘play is a child’s work.’ Finally, there are many reasons your child may say she is bored. An important one might be that she would actually like a little of your attention. When is the last time you danced with your child, for no other reason than for the joy of being together?

HOW TO DEAL WITH SUMMER LEARNING LOSS! By Jill Chatt-Collins
Summer learning loss is such a recognised phenomenon that it even has its own Wikipedia entry! Research, some of which dates back over 100 years, confirms the phenomenon often referred to as “summer slide” (White 1906). Put simply, many children fall behind in their academic achievement during the long summer break, especially those who do not engage in educational activities during the holidays.
Students typically score lower on standardised tests after the break than they did before the holiday and the loss of academic knowledge and skills is often said to be equivalent to “unlearning” about two month’s worth of what they have been taught. This “summer slide” is problematic for all children (and teachers), but it is particularly disadvantageous for children moving from one Key Stage to the next
what can be done to avoid summer learning loss, from encouraging quiet time for reading, visiting libraries and museums, enjoying the great outdoors or cooking up a treat. Activities involving other children, such as summer camps or sports clubs are also beneficial as they often involve opportunities for problem solving and working co-operatively. However, in order to face the challenges of the next academic year, some children can require short, regular periods of learning time to keep their reading, writing and maths skills active, especially if they have assessments for entry to a new school to sit during the autumn term. These short learning periods can take place with a parent, but often children (and parents!) prefer to work with a teacher or tutor, either by themselves or as part of a small group. If you think this might be helpful for your child, then have a look at your school holiday schedule and ring fence some time now.
i.e. from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2 at age 7 and from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3 at age 11. Both transitions often coincide with a move to a new school, which can serve to compound the difficulty. The last thing children need as they are presented with a more challenging curriculum in an unfamiliar environment, is to be struggling with skills and learning they had previously mastered. Rocket Science Summer Fun at RHS Garden Wisley! by Andrew Campbell Blast into a summer of outer space adventures at RHS Garden Wisley near Woking with FREE family activities every day of the holidays. Between 23 July and 31 August, enjoy the daily rocket-science themed activities for all the family, to celebrate the Rocket Science project! Earlier this year the RHS and UK Space Agency sent 2kg of rocket seeds to the International Space Station. Bike Ride Away – Teach Your Child to Ride this Summer! Learning to ride a bike is a big part of growing up and there are ways in which you can help your child accomplish this skill. At the beginning of a child’s cycling journey, there is a range of aluminium or wooden balance bikes or scooters which will enhance a child’s ability when they move onto a bike with pedals. A child will have a much more enjoyable learning experience if they feel in control on their bike. If you buy a bike that your child will grow into, the extra size, height and weight can be overwhelming, and may mean your child
can’t ride properly or safely control it. The lighter the bike, the easier it is for a child to move from a stationary position, manoeuvre around corners and go up and down curbs. A bike is the right size when your child can sit on the saddle and rest the balls of both feet on the ground. They should be able to comfortably straddle the top bar with both feet flat on the ground and reach the handlebars with a slight bend in the arms when sitting on the seat. Your child should be able to grasp the handbrakes and apply enough pressure to stop the bike.

Garsons Celebrates 35 years of Pick Yor Own! by Samantha Peck
When I overheard a group of mums at the school gate talking about their school holiday adventure to Garsons pick your own farm, I was keen to find out more. My kids shot a million questions at me during the short car trip through the leafy streets of Esher.“Can we really pick fruit for tea?” “Where do we put it?” “How do we know if it’s ripe?” We drove into the car park and continued through the PYO fields, and soon enough we felt like were on a different (green) planet! There are several car parks close to the produce that you can pick, which is great as the farm is HUGE - last season Garson’s grew around 40 different crops in nearly 80 varieties over its 150 acres - and you dont want to carry your heavy baskets around! You can pick up baskets from the various
kiosks that are dotted around the farm where you can also weigh your produce and pay for it. Garson’s has a rich and fruitful history, with roots planted 145 years ago selling fresh produce at London’s Borough Market. It is now the country’s largest pick your own farm. I couldn’t believe that just 20 minutes away from the hustle and bustle of my suburban home I was standing amidst fields of strawberries, beans, carrots, and plenty of other delicious fruit and vegetables. You could also pick sunflowers, which were taller than my kids! We were all smiling with the simple pleasure of picking our own fruit, and I was really surprised at how careful the kids were about what they picked, making sure it was in good condition, the right colour and ripe to eat (and BIG!). The car trip home was crammed with fruit, vegetables, a string of sausages from the farm shop, and another million questions including whether it was really possible for beanstalks to grow as tall as the sky and what would happen to you if you only ate strawberries! It’s a great short day trip, guaranteed to engage the curiosity of any child - and a really wholesome experience for the entire family to enjoy!

We spoke to Melissa Holt, Director of Waterbabies in North Surrey who explained that it’s quite common for children to hit ‘learning plateaus’ in the pool and for their previously rapid progression to slow down or even stop altogether. “Sometimes children can seem uncooperative, or resist going underwater when they’ve been quite comfortable and swam quite happily in the past” Melissa comments.”Learning plateaus are a natural part of life, regardless of when they occur, and can happen both in and out of the water and for all sorts of reasons.” Your child might experience a learning plateau when they’ve been doing an activity for a long time or after a period of rapid learning. After a period of learning, your child’s brain needs time to make sense of all
the new information and reinforce the skills learned. This period of time is completely natural and a vital part of learning any new skill. The good news is that once your child’s brain is able to process the information and has decided how to use it, they’ll be able to easily perform the new skills. Melissa explains that, generally, you can expect to see plateaus for the first time between 11 and 15 months old, and toddlers can experience several during their early years. “Plateaus can be short-lived or could last for many months” she comments. “But however long they last, rest assured that they’re a normal - and vital - part of learning both in the pool and out.”

Healthy Lifestyle It doesn’t feel good when you are struggling to keep up with a game or with your opponent. By playing netball from a young age, girls are taught to look after themselves. This becomes a habit - a lifestyle choice that isn’t consciously made – and gives girls a healthy concept of body image in an increasingly pressured society. Decision Making and Strategy In netball, you have 3 seconds to make a pass. That isn’t long when you have a defender in front of you. You have to think fast and make the right call. You have to look at your opposition and work out how you can beat them - what tactics can you implement to counteract their strengths? Dealing with Defeat: Sport is different to preparing for exams - you can be at every training session and put up every shot, but still lose if your opponent is just better on the day. Sport teaches children to deal with disappointment and defeat, to look at what went wrong and to work on improving for next time. This is a valuable lesson in any competitive workplace. Playing netball gives girls the confidence to not to be afraid of the competition.
