Happy New Year! We have another packed issue of Families for you to read, our Party Special has some great tips and our ever growing directory of useful party people on pages 9 to 13. We also have some great health advice and ideas on pages 14 to 17. A reader offer from The Look Out and a competition with Mum's Office on page 26. Instead of making New Year resolutions this year, why not create a memory jar instead? All you need is an empty jar and some slips of paper. When ever something memorable or lovely happens during the year, write it down and pop it in the jar. Open it next New Year's Day - to remember all the positive things that happened during the year. I know I probably sound like Pollyanna - but it is my favourite film! See you in March for our under-5s and nursery special.
Join Home-Start and help make a big difference to a local family Are you a parent or grandparent who could give a couple of hours a week to help a struggling or vulnerable family in the Slough and Burnham area? Then sign up to become a volunteer with Home-Start Slough, the local family support charity which has been working alongside parents and children under five for the last 16 years. Home-Start’s unique service involves recruiting and training volunteers – who are parents themselves – to provide practical help and emotional support to families in their own homes. Parents will be suffering from stress and difficulties ranging from mental health issues, physical disability, financial deprivation, family breakdown, single parenting, multiple births, abuse, neglect or isolation. The charity’s team of volunteers are currently supporting more than 45 families with over 80 children, helping parents to manage and overcome difficult issues in their lives and grow in confidence with their children. Why not share your parenting experience to help a family through a tough time? Home-Start Slough’s next volunteer training course starts on 27 February 2013. To find out more email office@hsslough.co.uk or call 01628 661029.
Volunteers needed to help children with reading ABC to Read (Assisting Berkshire Children) is looking for local volunteers to help their charity. The charity’s aim is to help as many children as possible to improve their reading, which will greatly improve their chances of success in life. For various reasons some children really struggle with reading. Local schools sign up the programme and choose the pupils that need the additional help. ABC then safely recruit volunteers. They then train and support them. The volunteers work twice a week on a 1-to-1 basis with three children for a year. According to ABC’s own survey, 97% of the children they work with improve their reading skills. ABC to read is currently looking for volunteers to attend training in both Reading and Slough. Many volunteers love the experience so much that they stay much longer than the year commitment that is asked of them. The charity currently works with around 300 children in Berkshire at 50 schools but there are many more children that they would like to reach by recruiting more volunteers and getting more schools to join their scheme. To find out more go to www.abctoread.org.uk or call Marcia Rowlinson on 0118 9511336.

Numberfit, the mathematics and fitness programme for children, is delighted to announce that the Numberbugs programme has now been extended to children aged 2-3 years old (as well as our classes for 3-11 year olds). Using the proven formula of combining fitness, short lesson bursts, visual, auditory and kinaesthetic teaching styles in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage, the format has been adapted to introduce toddlers to numbers, maths principles and problem solving in a fun and innovative environment. Parents can also participate in these engaging sessions, which follow the adventures of the Numberbugs and also reinforce the development at home. Sessions will be taking place in the local area from January, as well as the regular Numberfit classes for ages 3 and up in preschools, nurseries and schools in South Bucks and East Berkshire. For information on sessions for your child please visit www.numberfit.com or call us on 0208 1233996.

RSPB ‘reconnects’ kids to nature With more than fifty percent of the world’s population now living in cities, there is growing concern that generations of children with little or no contact with the natural world pose one of the biggest threats to the future of the UK’s natural environment. Now, the RSPB is unveiling a revolutionary approach to reconnect children aged 8-12 with the natural world and wildlife, exploring their empathy for creatures, responsibility for nature, enjoyment of nature experiences and sense of ‘one-ness’ with nature. They are running a nationwide survey with the University to Essex. To check your family’s level of connection to nature in a simple questionnaire at rspb.org.uk/getoutdoors. They also have some great, simple ideas on how to get back in touch with nature.
Working parents all know how expensive childcare can be, but did you know there’s a clever way of offsetting some of the cost? Childcare Vouchers allow you to pay for childcare from your pre-tax salary, offering significant savings over paying from your salary after tax. Employers can either give you vouchers in addition to your normal salary as a perk, or you sign up for a scheme in which part of your pay is turned into vouchers. These vouchers can then be used to pay for childcare with registered nurseries, playgroups, nannies, childminders and holiday playschemes. Self-employed workers are also entitled to childcare vouchers – ask your accountant. Overall, you pay less tax, and vouchers can be redeemed until your child turns 15. In addition, if signing up for childcare vouchers brings down your net income to below the £50,000 threshold, you will keep your child benefit. Guy Ker, Managing Director of Super Camps’ (www.supercamps.co.uk), is particularly keen to highlight the possibilities of Childcare Vouchers, especially following changes to Child Benefit and to make sure that working parents don’t miss out. ‘Surprisingly, only 30% of Super Camps’ bookings made during summer 2012 were paid for using childcare vouchers,’ he comments. ‘We think parents are missing out and want to encourage them to pay for their children’s holiday activities using them.’ Guy goes on to say: ‘A wrongly held belief is that childcare vouchers are only useful for paying for pre-school nursery places, when in fact they can be “banked” and used in one go for older children during the holidays. With higher earning parents facing a cut in their family budget when child benefit is meanstested, we would urge parents to sign up to childcare voucher schemes and start saving their vouchers, ready for the long summer holidays.’ For more info on childcare vouchers, visit http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/calcs/ccin.htm.

Party On!
Party Planning Tips Make organising your child’s birthday party a piece of cake by taking some advice from seasoned party planner, writer and mother of two girls Sarah Butters. DO plan early If you think you can book your first choice entertainer and venue a fortnight before your child’s party, think again. The best people and places are fully booked months in advance and if they’re not, ask yourself why not. It’s a question I wish I had posed the year I left it late and introduced a knife juggling circus act to my 4 year old. It’s not a mistake I made twice. DO consider a joint party Instead of entering into a ‘Who can get the invite out first’ race with other parents, join forces and funds. If your child has a friend whose birthday falls around the same time, why not organise a party together. If you’re going to invite the same group of friends and even opt for the same sort of party, this is a great option that halves the cost and the stress. Make sure you and your party partner are clear about the planning and the expectations. DON’T let your child decide the guest list If you let your little one take charge of who they’re inviting, they’ll leave out the friend they’ve fallen out with in the
playground. Up to the age of 7, it’s best to stick to either a full class party, or one where you simply invite all the girls, or all the boys. Tempting as it is to leave out the class troublemaker or the girl who leaves your daughter out, this is an approach that will only cause future heartache. A party invite not sent, is a party invite not received. Teach your child to be inclusive. For nursery aged children and over 7s, it’s fine to be selective. Parties tend to become more expensive as children get older and taking 30 children to Build a Bear or a Laser Quest Party would break the bank. DON’T be afraid to chase late replies There are few things more irritating than chasing the parents who haven’t bothered to respond to a party invite. Experience has taught me that parents who don’t respond within the first few days of an invite either haven’t received it, or have forgotten. Give yourself a helping hand by putting an RSVP date on the invite. After that, don’t be afraid to ‘remind’ via text or over a pick up time chat in the playground. Avoid involving bewildered Dads at drop off. continued on page 10

Unless they are in charge of childcare, you’ll be disappointed. For those replies that never arrive, and there will be some, head to your party venue armed with some extra food and a few unmarked party bags. Don’t let the unexpected guests catch you out! DO check for allergies In a group of 20 children, chances are there will be some allergies, and some children who can’t eat certain food for religious reasons. Don’t presume parents will

inform you. Ask about allergies when you know who is coming along. DON’T over cater You are feeding a group of children not an army of starving soldiers. Appetites shrink as excitement builds so there is no need to provide a smorgasbord of sandwiches. Stick to the tried and tested trio of party favourites – ham, jam and cheese. Throw in a selection of crisps and a couple of bowls of grapes, cucumber sticks and tomatoes, followed by cakes. Forget leftovers. Peckish parents will clear the plates, often while their children are still eating. DO consider your party date It’s heartbreaking to receive a steady stream of ‘nos’ after you’ve spent weeks securing an entertainer and a venue on a particular date. Give yourself half a chance by avoiding key dates, like Mothers’ Day and Fathers’ Day, and religious holidays such as Easter Saturday and Yom Kippur. Parents tend to jet off on holiday as soon as school’s out, or just before term begins again so avoid weekends at either end of the school holidays. DON’T invite too make children This is a mistake you’ll only make once. 30 children and 30 parents will fill even the most generous village hall. Add a bouncy castle and some uninvited siblings and you are nearly on riot watch. DON’T obsess over 5 a day There are certain things you can depend on. If you’re having a party in your garden, it will rain. If you’ve made 15 party bags, 17 children will turn up and ALL of your carefully cut cucumber, tomatoes and grapes will remain untouched on the table by the end of the party tea. Be honest. You only put them out to make sure the Annabel Karmel Fan Club in the corner didn’t fall out with you. Remember that it’s one meal, on one day and if all the birthday boy eats is a handful of Hula Hoops, a Jam Sandwich and a pack of Smarties then so what? You can force feed him broccoli for breakfast tomorrow.

Party On!
DO party bags Usually found in the back of your car a week after the party, just as the buttercream icing from the napkin wrapped cake is going rancid. But woe betide the mum who thinks she’s above a party bag. It’s a sure fire way to get your guests sobbing as they leave. Don’t fight it, simply be creative and accept that simplicity is the key. Suggestions include popping in a children’s magazine, a packet of seeds in the Spring or a personalised chocolate bar with the birthday child’s picture on it. And if you want to impress by being the ultimate organised mum, include a pre prepared thank you note. Bribing a child to write notes is easier when there’s the threat of a lost party on the horizon. DO enjoy it There are times during the planning you will find this the most absurd piece of advice. How on earth can you expect to enjoy it? Remember that this is one of those ‘gone too quickly’ milestones and if you don’t press the pause button and enjoy the sight of your child laughing with the entertainer or bouncing with his friends then the stress simply isn’t worth it. When the balloons have burst and the cake is just crumbs, it’s those memories that will make you do it all again next year! New Year Health
The ultimate me-time
Mindfulness has become the buzzword in the world of health and wellbeing. Helena Foss explores what the fuss is about and how busy mums can fit it into their day. Over at Bangor University, you can do a degree in it. It is at the cutting edge of psychotherapy. Study after study shows it reduces the stress hormone cortisol (linked to everything from heart disease to cancer), alleviates headaches and anxiety; boosts the immune system; improves mental health, creativity and problem solving. In fact, with regular practice of mindfulness it is perfectly possible to rewire the brain to a more peaceful disposition, a process known as neuroplasticity. Academics at Bangor describe mindfulness as: ‘paying attention on purpose moment to moment without judging.’ This quote comes from Jon Kabat-Zinn, founder of the stress reduction programme at the University of Massachusetts Medical Centre, where mindfulness has been taught and studied since the 1970s. Based on Eastern meditation techniques, the Centre’s mindfulness programmes have yielded consistently successful results in all kinds of settings: from prisons and deprived inner cities to the corporate world. Human doings or human beings? Yes, women have the vote and legalised equality. But while we’re busy proving our worth to the world at large and overturning patriarchy, we are slowly but surely burning out. ‘Having it all’ has really transpired into ‘doing it all’, which is why we all need to schedule in pure nothing time on a regular basis. This might appear unproductive. But there is great value in stopping being a ‘human doing’ and practicing the forgotten art of simply being, if only for a few moments. Most of us, at some point in our lives, have had a standstill moment in time – maybe watching an awe-inspiring sunset, looking into your newborn’s eyes for the first time, or even hearing heartbreaking news that you know will change your life forever. In that instant, we are so immersed in the moment that time itself slows right down. Now, this is the point of mindfulness practice; to be so present that time actually stretches, a little like blue tac, opening up space in your mind. Cool, huh? (Did I mention this takes practice?)
Mindless chatter Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), the NHS approved treatment of choice for depression, works to change the negative thought loops which trigger emotional distress. Indeed, most of us identify so closely with our minds that we believe the stream of mindless chatter that forms the running commentary to our lives, is who we actually are. But if you listen closely, you will notice that a lot of it is, well, a load of old nonsense: judgements, opinions, shoulds, ‘what ifs’ and ‘if onlys’. Endless self-criticism, worrying about the future, pining over the past, arguing with someone in your head, wondering what the neighbours think of you in your most stressed out moments (come on, admit it, we all yell sometimes)...We will do anything except relaxing into the moment that is happening right now and letting everything be exactly as it is. Doing nothing changes everything The magic of mindfulness is that simply observing our thoughts without judgement (which really does take practice!) can, over time, actually change them – no effort required. Using will power to, for example, lose weight, rarely works, as any yoyo dieter will tell you. Rather than sergeant majoring yourself into a strict health regime (and beating yourself up when you give into temptation), in the long term it is more practical and effective to observe your behaviour and compassionately notice the deeper, subconscious thoughts and emotions driving the urge to overeat. The Buddhist psychotherapist Tara Brach, calls this approach ‘radical acceptance.’ Not necessarily easy, but it does work. You see, silence can actually be deeply intelligent; doing nothing extraordinarily productive. You should try it sometime. Here are a few pointers to get you started: Mindfulness on tap Just like learning to ride a bike, mastering the art of mindfulness takes practice. Once you have the knack, however, you will be able to call on it whenever you have a few spare minutes (on the bus, in a waiting room, while the baby is napping). According to Goldie Hawn’s book 10
Mindful Minutes, a recent American study found that just three minutes of mindful breathing three times per day is enough to strengthen the brain and effectively change stressful thought patterns. The key is regular practice and to find a way that works for you. Get the knack Find some quiet time and practice sitting with a straight back, feet on the floor (cross legged if you prefer) and notice your breathing, how the air feels as it touches the insides of your nostrils, your chest rising and falling. The idea is to witness thoughts that come and go without getting caught up in them. You could see them as clouds in the sky or a newsfeed along the bottom of your internal TV screen. Random thoughts will distract you time and time again. This is normal. ‘What can I make for dinner? Oh, my nose is itchy. I’ll never get the hang of this.’ You know the kind of thing. Keep bringing your attention back to the breath. If emotions arise, give them space and just let them be. Once you have the hang of it, you can make any and all mundane daily activities mindful: Whilst washing up become as present as you can to the sights, sounds and sensations of that moment. Feel how your feet touch the ground whilst walking. Just notice and simply be… Helena Foss is a hypnotherapist, mum and writer: www.helenafoss.co.uk

New Year Health
Coeliac Disease is an autoimmune condition triggered by gluten, which is found in certain foods (wheat, barley and rye). It is a life long condition and requires the complete avoidance of all foods and drinks containing gluten. If your child has coeliac disease, eating gluten will cause a reaction in their bodies that damages or destroys the villi (small projections in the intestines that help us absorb nutrients). When this occurs, the surface of the small intestine is flattened and a child's body can't absorb vitamins and nutrients from food. You’re not necessarily born with coeliac disease - although the condition is linked to certain genetic markers there is normally an environmental trigger that causes the immune system to lose tolerance to gluten. For children it can be particularly difficult to diagnose – classic blood tests are accurate only when the villi are severely damaged and in children this may not have occurred. However if left undiagnosed it can lead to development of other autoimmune conditions as well as affecting the growth and development and overall health later in life. If there is a family history of autoimmune conditions and/or coeliac disease then it is recommended you get your child tested. Until recently this would involve a standard blood test from the GP to look for a range of antibodies. If positive, an Intestinal biopsy is often performed. The trouble is these are not particularly accurate (6) and blood tests can be distressing for children. Thankfully there are new private laboratory tests, involving saliva collection. This is not only sensitive and accurate but also easier to undertake for young children. There are also more comprehensive blood tests, which are available privately for older children. Even if your child does not appear to be showing any symptoms (see list below) if you have a family history of the coeliac disease it is recommended you get your children tested for the genetic markers (HLA DQ2/8). This blood test will identify whether or not your child has the genetic markers that make it more likely they will develop the disease if they continue to eat gluten. Ask your practitioner or qualified nutritionist for the most appropriate tests for your family. Signs and Symptoms Because symptoms in children are often subtle and mimic other intestinal diseases, like Irritable Bowel Syndrome or lactose intolerance, the disease is often difficult to diagnose. Some children experience symptoms the first time they are exposed to gluten, while others develop symptoms later in life. Typical symptoms include: Diarrhoea • Constipation • Abdominal pain • Poor appetite • A bloated or painful belly, gas, flatulence • Weight loss • Difficulty gaining weight These symptoms can begin during infancy (between 6 and 24 months), after the child begins to eat gluten-containing foods. Additional symptoms, which may develop later, include: Slowed growth, failure to thrive • Iron deficiency anaemia, fatigue, low energy • Skin rash – dermatitis herpetiformis • Tooth enamel changes • Bone thinning • Joint aches and pains • Headaches • Mouth ulcers • Mood changes, depression • Delay in menstruation If your child is diagnosed with coeliac disease it is important they receive nutritional advice to help with planning a gluten free diet, ensuring they are optimally nourished and also to ensure their gut heals. In many cases nutritional supplements will be recommended. While there are obvious sources of gluten such as breads, pastas, flours, cereals, cakes and biscuits, it is often used as an ingredient in many favourite foods such as fish fingers, sausages, gravies, sauces and soy sauce. Working with a qualified nutritionist can help you plan a healthy gluten free diet. However in some cases simply removing gluten may not be sufficient as many children with Coeliac Disease also react to other foods such as dairy in which case additional testing and support may be needed. For further information about testing, nutritional support, cookery days and recipes contact Christine Bailey, www.advancenutrition.co.uk
Gluten Sensitivity and Coeliac Disease – is your child affected? The prevalence of Coeliac Disease has increased five-fold overall since 1974 (1). Yet testing for the condition has been plagued with difficulties and inaccuracies especially in children. Nutritionist Christine Bailey takes a look at the new tests available and the signs and symptoms to look out for. Coeliac Disease (CD) is one of the most common lifelong diseases in both Europe and the US (2). Its prevalence is estimated at around 1% of the population (3). This equates to approximately 3 million Americans and 620 000 people in the UK. The problem is that it is seriously under-diagnosed especially in children. Approximately 78% of sufferers don’t realise they have the disease – in fact only 10-20% have been diagnosed (4). What is also shocking is that there has been an increase in its prevalence over the last 50 years – one study suggested CD has increased by up to 400 percent (5). While classic symptoms include diarrhoea, intestinal bloating and stomach cramps, the majority of people including children do not experience any digestive symptoms making detection harder. Left untreated, it can lead to the malabsorption of nutrients, damage to the small intestine and other medical complications. Quote Families to get 10% off the 4 week introduction course.

Holidays 2013 How to have your best family holiday ever: our top ten secrets
Joanna Moorhead, who has been planning her family’s holidays for the last 20 years, shares her insider tips to help you plan for a summer to remember in 2013 antastic family holidays don’t just happen. They’re crafted, often by hours of work from one or both parents, who spend endless amounts of time planning, plotting, budgeting and making sure safety nets are in place to stop hiccups becoming disasters. Of course everyone loves spontaneity ...
F
...but for spontaneous decision to be possible, especially where a family with children are concerned, a framework has to be in place...and getting that framework right is the backbone of every holiday.

FAMILIES Thames Valley East
So how do you do it? Here are our top ten tips. 1. Don’t cut corners. To get the right holiday, you may have to spend a long time on research. Don’t begrudge this time, and don’t expect the perfect holiday to fall into your lap without it: after your mortgage, your car and (if you’re paying them) your child’s school or university costs, the money you spend on your holiday is your biggest outlay. So doing the homework matters. Start with a list of what sort of holiday you’re looking for – the location you’re after, what facilities you need close by, what sort of accommodation you need, how far it needs to be from the airport, and so on. Give yourself parameters, and then get googling. Keep a list of possible resorts/villas/hotels; whittle it down to a shortlist; and then make a decision. 2. Don’t expect a bargain. After two decades of planning holidays for my family (my children are aged between ten and 20), I’m sure of one thing: where school holidays are concerned, bargains are as rare as hen’s teeth. Far better to start from the premise that you’ll get what you pay for. Look for the best deal, the best quality that you can possibly afford: but if somewhere seems a lot cheaper than other places, scrutinise it very carefully indeed. 3. Space is crucial. You know those places that say ‘sleep 4/6’ and turn out, on closer inspection, to have a pull-down bed in the sitting room? Avoid them (at full capacity) like the plague. Squeezing as many people as possible in is fine for students, less good for grownups. You want a bit of luxury on holiday – and space is luxurious. 4. Location, location, location. Just as when you’re buying a house, this is your number one priority. Some of the villas I’ve looked at for my family’s holiday this year are twice the price of others, simply because of where they are. And guess what: I can understand why. On holiday I want a great view and shops and restaurants we can walk to. If you’ve got younger children, a beach within walking distance may be your number one location priority. Know what you need, and don’t settle for less. 5. Friends matter, so think very carefully about who to holiday with. However close you are, nothing scratches away at a friendship’s weakest points as much as sharing two weeks together. You think you know that couple, and you think you like their kids? Take it from me, you’re going to know a lot about them, and you may have totally reassessed their kids, by the flight home. 6. Be honest about the sort of experience you want. Holidays aren’t times to be aspirational, or eyeing up the Joneses, or following the in-crowd. They’re about being honest about how you’d really love to spend a fortnight with your family – and who cares what anyone else might think. You don’t need anyone else’s

approval, or envy, for the holiday you choose: what this is about is working out what’s right for your family, and making it happen. 7. Once you’re there, alternate busy days with quiet ones. Even if you’re a busy, boisterous, action-packed family, everyone needs some downtime. The easiest, simplest way to make sure you get both busy days and more relaxed ones is simply to alternate them. If you went to a water park yesterday, relax by the pool today. If you went fell-walking yesterday, read a book and have a cream tea today. Overloading is the enemy of a good holiday. 8. Don’t over-plan: have ideas, but leave space to be open to what you find when you get there. It’s well worth doing some research about the area you’ll be staying in – essential, in fact – but it’s a mistake to plan every jot and comma of your stay before you even touch down. You want to explore, to discover, to be surprised, to make friends – and all these things will only happen if you’ve left the space for them to unfold. So, for as much knowledge as you’ve learned beforehand, always be flexible about what you’re going to find out, and want to do, when you actually get there. 9. Embrace change: as your family grows up, be ready to move on to new destinations and new experiences. For three years running my family had wonderful holidays in a hilltop villa in inland, northern Mallorca. It was perfect for us: but by the third year it was obvious my older daughters needed something more: shops, places to hang out, a beach they could walk to. I was desperately unhappy about giving up the villa: but guess what? The following year I found somewhere even better. 10. Set boundaries. It might be a holiday, but rules ensure everyone – especially the parents – get a break. If your children are younger, those rules might be about bedtime (you need some time with your partner, so letting your kids stay up all evening might not be the best move), or about time for the children to go to the crèche; if your children are older, the rules might be about sharing the washing up, or about how much contact you need to have with them through the day. But put your rules in place, because then everyone can relax and have what they came to do: have a wonderful fortnight away.

Holidays 2013 Where to go... ...the Alps The Alps are much too good to save for your skiing holidays – in fact, those who’ve tried the area summer and winter often say summer is the best time to be there. For a wonderful family Alpine holiday, you’ll be hard-pressed to improve on the Chilly
cottages that are beautifully laid out and furnished) and has everything on hand, from stairgates to babysitters, for the hard-pressed family. There’s an indoor pool, games room, play areas inside and out, fishing lake and woods – all on a rolling, 40-acre estate, and with the sea a half hour’s drive away. Perfect for big families or families holidaying together – the farmhouse sleeps up to 14. Prices vary, but for example Moley’s Place, sleeping eight in four bedrooms, costs around £1,700 a week in high summer. More information at www.libbearbarton.co.uk
Glamping
Powder formula – choose from a luxurious hotel or a villa, all set in a biscuit-tin pictureperfect location, complete with in-chalet childcare and – for the foodies – an in-chalet chef. Sports on offer include white water rafting, rock-climbing, trekking, tennis and summer tobogganing (which is one of the most fun summer sports I’ve ever tried, and kids adore it). Prices vary depending on what sort of package you’re after, but as a forinstance, Chalet des Amis (three bedrooms; sleeps up to eight) is £1,200 in the midsummer. Holiday Review The National Youth Hostel Association has all types of accommodation across the UK, which have great facilities for families that won’t break the bank. They have also teamed up with the watersports specialist UKSA to offer discounted watersports to people staying at all eight of their hostels in the Lake District. YHA Ambleside, located at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, is now a base for UKSA instructors. Claire Winter and her family went on a weekend break at the hostel to try out the new water sports facilities. he YHA Ambleside has the most amazing setting on the shores of Lake Windermere and the children were over the moon when we arrived after a long but scenic journey to the Lake District. They were even more excited when they learnt they were sleeping in bunk beds with us in one of the hostel’s family rooms. We had bathroom facilities just outside our door and enough room for the five of us. The first night we had the opportunity to go out with the kids on kayaks, which was great, the water was really still and the scenery was amazing. Watching the sun set whilst paddling on Lake Windermere was truly memorable, We got back to the hostel and tucked into dinner. The food is reasonably priced and like old fashioned pub grub, the kids liked the fact that chips came with pretty much everything. There is a well stocked bar, a TV room, games room, laundry room, a kitchen, so you can self cater, and a dry room. There were lots of families staying at the hostel and the staff were very helpful and lent me a charger for my phone. The next day my eight year old and my

husband were due to go out sailing with UKSA but there was no wind. The flexible instructor gave them the option of kayaking or paddle boarding instead, so they opted for paddle boarding. They had a great time and the instruction given was very thorough but fun. A highlight was watching my eight year old trying to do a cartwheel on her paddle board. UKSA offer hour, half-day and full-day activity sessions in sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and paddle boarding . During our stay we also managed to visit the local National Trust property, have a tour of the lake by boat and a brilliant all day walk, climbing up Lougrigg Fell, which was recommended to us by the very knowledgeable staff in the nearby tourist
information centre. The kids valiantly climbed all the hills, (my five year old twins ran up most of them!) and we were rewarded with the most stunning view of Lake Windermere, which is Britain’s longest lake. We ended the walk with a delicious, organic cream tea. The hostel itself was tired and dirty but it is having a much needed £1.4 million refurbishment this year. However, its location and the friendliness of the staff and sailing instructors more than made up for what it lacked. I am sure once the hostel re-opens in early May it will be fully booked all year round. To make a booking at any Lake District Youth Hostel visit www.yha.org.uk or call 0800 0191 700.
Travel colouring fun Carddies – are colour and go card people for children on the move. They are a great idea as they come in a small, portable box and come with their own set of small colouring pencils. We were sent a box of Cavemen and Family One, my five year old twins loved them. They patiently coloured all the characters in and then set up the scenery and started playing with the people, who come with small plastic stands. The best thing about them is that they can continue to play with them once they have all been coloured in.
JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2013
It’s not surprising they won Best Travel Toy 2012 in the Toy Talk awards, as they are a perfect way to occupy a child on a plane, coach or train and also take up very little room. They cost £8.99 and are available from www.amazon.co.uk. For other stockists go to www.carddies.com

Is your relationship in trouble?
Divorce
For many couples, Christmas is not the happy time they expected. Often the pressure to have a ‘perfect’ day and quality time with the family puts many relationships under strain. The cracks that were already in a marriage can widen and couples decide to separate in the New Year.
he pressure to play happy families and have a great time is often reinforced by the media with pictures of a happy smiling family enjoying a Christmas feast, when in reality it is not uncommon to find children squabbling and parents shouting at each other or not talking to each other.
T
So if you felt the stress levels rising or are feeling lonely or sad, why don’t you talk about it with someone you trust? Try going for a walk in the fresh air and reflect. Laugh out loud. Studies have shown that laughing and even pretending to laugh can send signals to the brain to release the feel good chemicals. Give yourself time out doing something that you enjoy together. Relationships need nurturing just like friendships. As the Marriage Foundation reports “it is hard work to keep a marriage together”. They also warn against couples using celebrities as marriage role models. In a recent study they found that celebrity couples are twice as likely to divorce as the rest of the UK married population. Whilst it is important to give your marriage a chance, if you do think that your relationship is beyond repair you may want to seek legal advice. You may have heard of “D-Day” or Divorce Day, which is widely reported to be the 7th January. This is the day statistically that the largest number of people contact a solicitor for advice on separation and divorce.
Telephone: 01628 627 586
If you decide to consult a Solicitor; separation and divorce are just one of a range of options they will discuss with you. Solicitors are actively encouraged to get their clients to
consider alternatives, which include attempting reconciliation and providing information and contact details for organisations that would be able to assist.
If you are experiencing difficulties in your relationship or have decided your marriage is at an end please do not hesitate to contact Karen Newman at Thomas Chaytor by email to Karen@thomaschaytor.co.uk or by telephone on 01628 477889 for a FREE initial consultation. Thomas Chaytor are an innovative forward thinking firm dedicated to finding tailormade solutions for couples and families going through separation or divorce at affordable prices. We offer a full range of services including assisting with the arrangements for children, the separation of unmarried couples as well as living together agreements for unmarried couples and pre-nups for those getting married. You can find further information at www.thomaschaytor.co.uk.
Sometimes however, a marriage cannot be saved and if you do have to make that very difficult decision, there are a range of processes that can be used to try and resolve the practical and legal arrangements following a relationship breakdown. These include mediation, arbitration and conducting cases collaboratively as well as in some situations resorting to the Courts to litigate disputes. As resolution specialists we endeavour to deal with cases amicably, constructively and as quickly and cost effectively as possible.

My Great Big Birthday Bash! by Betty G Birney (Faber £3.99)
Feathers in the Wind by Sally Grindley (Bloomsbury £4.99)
ED SAYS: ‘Humphrey loves being the classroom hamster with such a wonderful crowd of children. In this story he learns about the importance of birthdays to humans and enjoys the unsqueakable excitement that surrounds birthday parties. When he hears about plans for a surprise party, he doesn’t realise how much of a surprise it really is going to be.
ED SAYS: ‘Joe and Aesha are thrilled to be going to the Indian city of Ahmedabad with their parents – a vet and a photographer. They will be there for the annual kite festival which is very exciting but which can be devastating for some of the birds. The children are eager to be involved but are they really putting themselves at risk when they try to help an injured bird on their own?
ED SAYS: ‘Jamie is starting another tricky spelling test at school when suddenly his genie friend Balthazar appears. There is trouble back in Lampville and Balthazar needs Jamie to return to the Genie Academy with him to help sort things out. Jamie knows he is in for a dangerous challenge but secret plots in the genie world and magic carpet races are better than a spelling test any day!
‘This is a fantastic adventure in the International Rescue series. It is a fastmoving story that will entertain boys and girls alike.’
‘This is a hilarious and wacky story by this very funny writer. It is entertaining and full of energy. If you enjoy this book, look out for the other titles in the series.’
‘This is another super book in the Humphrey’s Tiny Tales series. The life of this adorable character provides a lot of FUN-FUN-FUN for young readers on their own or reading together.’
Genie in Trouble by Ciaran Murtagh (Piccadilly Press £5.99)
Granny Grabbers’ Whizz Bang World by Charlotte Haptie (Hodder £5.99) ED SAYS: ‘Delilah Smart’s parents are determined their daughter will excel in everything she does and to help them they send off for a childcare robot. Although at first Delilah isn’t sure what to make of the metal contraption with several long arms, soon Delilah and Granny Grabbers form a close bond. But when Delilah’s parents send off for the replacement Nanny Deluxe, is it time for Granny Grabbers to go to the scrapheap? Not without a lot of resistance! ‘This is a very funny and warm-hearted story. The madcap adventures and characters make for a real page-turner of a book.’
Ed’s Reading Room is part of www.edontheweb.com, a DTI award-winning website. It was created by Maggie Humphreys, a teacher of more than 25 years, and Les Snowdon, who together are authors of several books on fitness walking and healthy eating. You are very welcome to contact Maggie on 01753 730019 or by email at mgh@edontheweb.com about the website or about Ed on the Web Spelling Bees in schools.

Go to sleep, please…
Bumps ‘n’ Babes
All new parents suffer from sleep deprivation when their baby is first born and many mums struggle to get their baby in to a regular sleep routine. Joanna Parry has some top tips. How can I get my baby to sleep through the night? very baby is different. Some sleep through from the start, others won't sleep for more than an hour or two at a time. Although every child is different, there are steps you can take to help your baby sleep through the night and establish healthy sleep habits for life. • Establishing a bedtime routine. A routine provides babies with security and comfort and can encourage them to sleep for longer spells. Establishing a routine can be tricky with a newborn, but try to get a loose schedule started, especially at bedtime. Before bedtime let your baby get any pent-up energy out of their system with tummy time or a kickabout, then follow it up with a bath and lullaby. Dim the light when you’re feeding and put on a CD of soothing music. Whatever you do, make sure you do the same thing every night • Learn the signs that your baby is tired. If they’re fussing, grizzling, crying, pulling their ears, rubbing their eyes or are especially clingy, they’re probably ready for bed. • Teach the difference between day and night. In the daytime, play with your baby. Chat and sing to them, keep their room light and bright. Don't try to cut out the radio or washing machine. At night, stay quiet when you feed, keep lights and noise low and hopefully your baby will work out that night-time is for sleeping! • Give your baby a security object, blanket or stuffed animal. A great way to make teddy a favourite is keep it near you so it
E
becomes mum-scented. Hopefully the toy or blanket will comfort them while they sleep instead of you! • Put your baby down awake. If they’ve become sleepy on the breast or bottle, rouse them slightly before putting them in their cot, so they learn to fall asleep by themselves. Different methods to try: • Teach your baby to settle itself. If your baby cries, allow them to cry for three minutes, then comfort them but don't pick them up. Let them cry for five more minutes and return again. Extend the time you wait before returning each time and your baby will learn to soothe itself and fall asleep without assistance. • The settle-and-leave method. If you don’t want to leave your baby to cry, pick them up and talk to them until they stop (or try to settle them without picking them up, which is even better). If they cry again pick them up again. It might take 100 goes, but you’ll get there. • Stay by the cot. Some parents choose to stay with their child as they fall asleep but unless you want to do this forever, plan to gradually move further away. After a week you should be sitting by the door and after that you should no longer have to stay in the room. Remember: • Be consistent. Whichever approach you take, it's no good doing it one night and not bothering the next. • You're not just doing it for you. 'Training' your baby to self-settle at night will have positive effects on their general outlook

during waking hours. Letting your baby settle themselves gives them independence, confidence and security. Remember, your child won't love you any less in the morning! • Advice on cot death. SIDS is rare and the exact cause isn't known, but researchers think there are likely to be a number of factors that can affect a baby at a vulnerable stage of development. The cot death charity (fsid) advises placing baby on their back to sleep (not on the front or side). For more information go to fsid.org.uk. Get in the professionals If nothing’s working it might be time to call in the cavalry. Sleep deprivation can seriously affect the health of both mother and baby and there are agencies that offer specialist help with sleep problems. Sometimes referred to as ‘sleep trainers’, these night nannies will observe sleep patterns and implement routines to help baby sleep. Local sleep fairy Dee Booth may be able to help. sleepfairyparentrescue.co.uk Still concerned If you’re concerned about your child's health seek advice from a doctor. Sometimes there are medical reaseons for night waking, such as gastroesophageal reflux (GER) or allergies. Remember, a happy mother equals a happy baby. Learning good sleep habits early on will stand both of you in good stead for the future, and your baby will appreciate the consistency and predictability. Don’t expect miracles right away, remember to persevere and be consistent.

Mums Who Mean Business Passion for art inspires business idea 1. Who are you and where do you live? My name is Melissa Johnson and for the past six years I’ve lived in Burchetts Green with my husband, Paul and our two children, Tabitha (6) and Noah (4). 2. Why did you set up the business? I decided to set up Mini Monets, creative fun for kids when I realised it was difficult to find an art class for my children which was value for money and suitable for pre-school aged children. I found that even classes aimed at this age group would often make things that were too tricky for them which meant the kids would lose interest quickly and the adult who accompanied them to the class would end up doing the art themselves! At Mini Monets, children will produce at least two mini masterpieces per one hour session, so the classes will always hold their interest. We also aim to make our classes current, with themed sessions on events and festivals throughout the seasons of the year using a variety of different materials. 3. What did you used to do? I’ve been a full-time mum looking after my two children, Tabitha and Noah for the past six years. Before children, my husband and I travelled for just under two years throughout Africa and America. Now Noah has started school, I’m ready for my next challenge! 4. What inspired you to set up the business? I have always had a passion for art. I studied art and design and aim to continue developing my knowledge and love of the subject. As a mother, I enjoy teaching my own children to express themselves and their ideas through painting and colouring. It’s such a wonderful, educational, creative thing for them to do and they are always very proud of the work they produce. I believe Mini Monets classes will help children develop their creativity and artistic skills whilst also being a lot of fun. 5. What are your plans for the future? I want to develop Mini Monets to its full potential. Not only are we running term time sessions for pre-school children, but we will also be holding fun days during school holidays for children up to 10 years old. Children attending the sessions will be able to make a number of creative items out of a variety of materials. In addition, Mini Monets offers a party service for birthdays and other events which can be tailored around a particular theme. Mini Monets is launching its first class on Monday February 25 at Boyne Hill Cricket Club, Maidenhead from 10-11am.You can also find them on Thursdays at Marlow Sea Cadets Hall from 10-11am. For more information take a look at the Mini Monets website www.minimonets.co.uk or contact Melissa on 07974 113434 or email melissa@minimonets.co.uk
Capture precious memories with an outdoor photoshoot
1. Who are you, how many children do you have and where do you live? My name is Robyn Liebenberg, I am a photographer and I run my own business Liebenberg Photography. I have two children, Sarah who is 10 and Brenton who is 7 (who I never seem to get many photos of). I live in Warfield, Berkshire with my husband who is a Sharepoint Architect (and my PC guru). 2. Why did you set up the business? I set up my photography business about 11 years ago. I’ve always loved photography and really wanted my own business where I could work from home and be with my children. During that time I’ve shot with film cameras and then moved on to a digital Fuji, Nikon and now I use Canon digital cameras. I have invested in good lenses as I believe a good lens is just as important as a good camera. Being a mum, I especially love family, children and baby photography (even if it means popping smarties on my head and doing silly dances to get a smile). I have a small studio at home which I use for newborn and baby photography and most of my children and family shoots are mostly done outdoors on location where children can have fun and be themselves (in the snow, leaves and daffodils). 3. What did you used to do ? In South Africa, I worked for an Advertising Agency (and during my spare time, I did volunteer work in an orphanage). 4. What inspired you to set up the business? I love anything creative and I especially love photography. Initially I had very little confidence to set up on my own but I got a lot of encouragement to ‘go for it’ from family and friends and I’ve not looked back. Since setting up my business, I have been privileged enough to shoot many gorgeous weddings at some very lovely venues. I have also worked with many lovely families and babies. I also so corporate work (namely on site Board of Directors shots for annual reports and websites, buildings, products, conferences, corporate events). I am a member of the British Professional Photographers Association as well as the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers. 5. What are your plans for the future? I want to continue with my business and I want to increase the amount of corporate work that I do. To find out more go to www.l-photography.co.uk or call Robyn on 07919 100533

Marketing magic for mumpreneurs 1. Who are you and where do you live? My name is Katie Wilson, I live in Cookham and I have an 18 month old son William. 2. Why did you set up the business? I set up my business Exceptional Marketing as a business development and marketing consultancy, because I love marketing and the exciting process of helping businesses grow and achieve success. I found that many of the clients I enjoyed working with were women/mums in business and that in this area, there was very little professional support for them. This prompted my decision to launch Exceptional Mumpreneurs, a networking group for women and mums in business, to help them reach their potential. My first meeting on the 4th December was attended by 19 such ‘mumpreneurs’ and was a great success! I’m now looking forward to the next meeting on 17th January. 3. What did you used to do? Before setting up Exceptional Marketing and Exceptional Mumpreneurs I spent most of my career in marketing, sales and business development roles for Xerox (UK)Ltd. This gave me a tremendous amount of experience across a wide range of sectors and vertical markets, providing an excellent foundation of skills and experience, which I have put to good use in starting my business. 4. What inspired you to set up the business? Setting up my own business and working for myself was always a dream, however the moment came sooner than I thought, when the opportunity to leave Xerox arose. My new found freedom to think more creatively, inspired me take Exceptional Marketing to another level. I then became pregnant with my son and took a break once he was born. My experience as a mother and marketeer has helped me to build my business Exceptional Mumpreneurs, and fortunately because of the type of business that this is, I am able to fit my hours around my son and his routine. My clients come to my home and sometimes they bring their children to meetings too! 5. What are your plans for the future? Having put my son William into nursery for a day a week I have more time to develop my businesses. The plan with Exceptional Marketing is to grow my client base then work with them to grow their business over the next few years. With Exceptional Mumpreneurs I would like to take the meetings to more locations and maybe one day franchise it! Either way, I want to keep on doing what I’m doing, as it gives me the balance between my home and work life that I craved. Moreover, I love working with other mums and women in business, they are my inspiration. For more details call Katie Wilson on 07850 898 361 or email katie@exceptionalmarketing.co.uk.
